Used 2019 Toyota Highlander Consumer Reviews
Better value than 4runner, looks better than 2020
I have owned 3 Tacoma 4x4s and my last one almost reached 300k miles. I almost bought a 4runner, but chose a 2019 highlander AWD since it was a better value. With factory and dealer rebates in the fall, I bought an LE awd 6 cylinder for 6k less than sticker price...and about 4K less than a 4runner. The combined fuel economy is about 22mpg, much better than the 4runner, while the towing cap is the same.. 5,000 pounds max. It's nice to have a "economy"mpg light to let you know when you hit the sweet spot. I love the potential for 8 passengers, although we usually keep the back seats down (good for kids only). It is very comfy for long road trips. One downfall is the 8” ground clearance Subi's have 8.7".. the higher the better in deeper snow and dodging rockfall in the Rocky Mountains. I could do without the fancy anti crash tech. I have to turn it off each time I start the engine. I am afraid that an on coming snowplow will push snow onto the car and the car may accidentally sense this as a potential collision and break on an icy road. It hasn’t happened yet, but I wish I didn’t always have to turn it off. I love the auto high beams and the cruise control works well, sensing cars in front of me, and adjusting the speed. Even though it looks like so many other cross overs, it is a handsome car. I think it looks better than the Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, and Subi Forester. It ties in looks with the Ford Explorer and Kia Telluride, yet I trust Toyota for long term reliability over Ford and Kia. Plus, I live in Telluride- so driving a Telluride in Telluride whouldbe overkill! Even thought the grill/front bumper is a bit much, overall I like the '19 bettern than the new '20 model (which has strange dents on the sides and reminds me of an ugly Subi) buy the LE base AWD model, and you don’t have to worry about the navigation issues that others talk about.

Great, except . . .
I am a fan of Toyota in general. I believe they make a high-quality vehicle that is bound to last a long time if well-maintained. I was looking for a midsize SUV, and the Highlander beat out its competitors. Not surprisingly, my final 2 vehicles were this and the Passport, but I ended up going with the Highlander. Like every new vehicle, this is loaded with all sorts of high-tech. Much of it is superfluous, but as Tony Soprano rhetorically asked, Whattaya gonna do? I see the benefit in most of these features, but the one thing about this car that I absolutely despise is that several electronic settings must be reset every time you start the car. You cannot simply configure your settings and leave them as is. You have to renew your settings on certain features every time you start the car. I am not a child, and I do not need my beneficent overlords from Toyota correcting what I do every time I start the car. If I could simply leave the electronic settings as is, a big pain in the butt would be eliminated. Not sure if this is enough to cause shoppers to pick one car over another, but this is the only significant beef I have with this vehicle. Otherwise, build quality so far exhibits Toyota quality and reliability.

Great SUV but missing some features
I love the ride and build quality, but the lack of a remote start makes no sense in this price range, apple play not available makes no sense, both of the mentioned features are available in the 2019 RAV4 which is a cheaper vehicle. The owners manual is more like a novel, just too much reading to get to the point. It would also be nice if the tailgate would lift by placing your foot underneath, like the ford Escape. The pickup is sluggish, something similar to the Ford Eco boost would have been a nice feature. A nice vehicle, but more thought could have been put in to some common sense feature that competitors offer for less money.

Highlander is FRAUD
Purchased a brand new 2019 SE Highlander on Jan 5, 2020. Six weeks later, the touch screen, navigation system, Bluetooth, and radio completely died! Got in the car and it just wouldn't turn on! Took it in for service and they tell me the entire unit has to be replaced but cannot give me no date on when that can happen. I don't understand why they can't give me a date! So, I called corporate Toyota. They tell me the part is backordered. They "escalate" this to a case manager and tell me that I would receive an email. Yes, but the email contains no information, including a name of the case manager! So I still have no answer as to when my $45,000 piece of junk with no navigation, radio, or Bluetooth will work again!!!!! I am so livid. Toyota should be ashamed of themselves. Complete fraud for selling these cars. Read the other reviews. They are all the same!!! FRAUD. Where is the customer protection? There needs to be accountability for the automobile manufacturers.
Thumbs down for Toyota Highlander
There is nothing more annoying that not being able to use carplay, or simply the faulty Entune System that simply does not work in a brand new Highlander SE 6 cyl. Avoid this vehicle. Just go directly to the 2020.
