Ideal City Car

I live in NYC, and find this vehicle to be the ideal city car. The combination of excellent reliability, compact-size and great maneuverability make this car a winner. Between the horrible pothole ridden roads, stop and go traffic, excessive idling, and near-constant sudden breaking and my aggressive driving -- this car takes a beating, However, in spite of the abuse, my Corolla starts up every time - and continues to run stronger than ever. I currently have 140k on the car, and even with the abuse it takes from city driving fully expect it to last another 100k. I average about 6k miles driver a year, so I anticipate driving this car for the next 10+ years.

This car is a very reliable economy car. That being said, the 'economy' part should speak for itself in terms of interior room, comfort, etc. Short on inside space and features, but fairly easy to customize or add to. Small but fairly peppy 1.8L engine gets me an average of 34 mpg, and as high as 41. Excellent turning radius, and very good at maneuvering in heavy traffic, as well as very good field of view. Perfect for a small commuter car. Excellent for students, as it's fairly inexpensive to repair in most cases (for a foreign vehicle). Only complaint is that it has a problem with oil consumption.

Prius economy in a straight ICE

We have had our 2001 sedan for 15 years. All components on the car are still working flawlessly which is amazing given where we live(6500 feet in Wyoming). All plastic, and electronic components, gaskets etc are as good as new. Seat is still comfortable. It has 295000 miles. The only repair has been to the engine which began burning oil at 220000 miles and finally threw a rod at 282K. I rebuilt the engine IN THE CAR(!!) in my garage over a weekend for $650. The oil burning was due to partially plugged oil return holes in the pistons and valve guide/seals. With a reman head It now runs as new and still delivers 39-46 mpg with the 5 spd and it has surprising power and now burns zero oil. Frequent oil changes with synthetic oil; are essential. These are timing chain engines which saves a great deal of money. The 5 spd version is the jewel in the crown. Our best economy with the old engine was over 50 mpg on numerous occasions. Head gaskets rarely fail and these cars should not be scrapped as they are easy to fix inexpensively. The only con is the known oil burning issue which is a cheap and easy fix.

My fiance noticed the low engine light on the car last week and had me check it. The car had less than a quart left when I changed the oil. She drove for a week before telling me so that is around 200-300 miles. Toyota quality is amazing. I cannot believe that the engine did not blow up! The rest of the car is boring but I like the car now for its toughness!

I haven't had this car very long yet but bought it because of it's reputation as a solid reliable car. And that's exactly what it is. I'm very very happy with it, just recently took it on a 11 hour drive, and it performed great. Has enough power to pass on the highway no prob...just drop it into 3rd and it's gone. I suggest the manual though, I don't think it would be so great in an automatic, but that's just me. The gas mileage is awesome! It's fun to drive for a 4 door economy car, and looks good too. The A/C works great, but really robs the engine of power. But yeah, great choice if you're looking for a reliable cheap to own car. Can't go wrong with a Toyota.

Overall, the Toyota Corolla is the basic transportation. No cruise, no ABS, and bland, boring styling. It's not bad looking, but not nearly as nice as the Civic from the same year. Outside, the car is fairly boring. The headlights are a neat shape, but that's about all I can say about the interior. This car is absolutely boring in tan. Inside, it's still boring. Tan, tan tan. The seats are fairly comfy, no complaints there. Rear legroom is a joke. Trunk space is good, enough for a long trip. Overall the car has been very reliable, mass air flow sensor is the only major thing replaced. Other normal things like timing belt, etc.

Bought this 2001 with 98,000 miles in January, 2009. Was a very clean, one-owner car. As of Aug 2016 we now have 230,000 miles on it, some rust showing, but it may give us another year. Only repair besides expected maintenance was the rack-and-pinion went out; replaced with inexpensive used part. This car has been reliable, very good on gas (usually 35-40 mpg; winter that dips), and easy to park in our small parking pad. Oh, both front springs have broken, but since it still steers and brakes and corners fine, I've not fixed them. It clunks on bumps, but tire wear remains normal. FYI, though, these 1.8L motors do begin to consume oil once miles add up. Oil return ports begin to sludge and restrict, causing blowby. I've just kept a close eye on oil levels and add as needed. I used Amsoil for a long time, but now use inexpensive conventional, and synthetic in MN winter.

I got this car used when I was in high school. Since then I've lived in major cities and smaller cities. It's handled the abuse of a young driver well and the abuses of aggressive city driving well. (ATL anyone?) At 16 years and 170K miles, it doesn't quite accelerate they way it used to, but it'll always get me there no matter what. I haven't had many issues with it; mostly an oil leak problem and a window issue. The interior door handles will break every now and then, but those are easy to find cheaply on eBay and replace yourself. Otherwise, it's a great little car that keeps going!

We bought this car new in May 2001, we now have 135K miles on it and still love it! The only issues we have had to deal with was replacing the clutch at 95K (driver fault) and simple maintenance. The front brake pads lasted until 120K (I check them regularly). I still average about 31mpg when its all city driving and 36 when I commute on the highway. We could afford a new car, but I will drive this one until it's last mile, and would not hesitate to buy another. With that said it is not perfect and there are drawbacks like interior size, road noise, etc.. But I am a believer that those are little things while reliability and affordability are the things that are harder to come by. UPDATE 2/29/2016: Still love this car, but recently had some transmission issue (manual). Had to have it rebuilt and continue to have issue with a seal. Partly my fault because I neglected to change the trans fluid and maybe just a fluke. We are going to part ways with it because of my 500 mile/week commute otherwise I would keep it as my main driver.

I purchased a used LE in 2001 with 17k miles. I now have 170k miles on the odometer. The cost of ownership for this vehicle has been good despite my car suffering from many of the woes documented by others. The major concern is the engine. Despite by the book maintenance my engine expired at 146k miles. Premature piston ring wear leads to piston slap and eventually a broken wrist pin. I also have the continuous CEL. A note to other owners, if your fuel economy deteriorates, change the mass air flow sensor. It is a cheap and easy fix. I also had the broken door handle and the sagging headliner. At the end of the day it is cheap tranportation.

I just recently purchased my '01 Corolla S automatic for way under blue book with 116K miles on it and couldn't be happier. The handling, turn radius and overall feel of the car is so much more luxurious than that of my 1986 Corolla that I traded in years ago with 281K miles on it. Weird thing though was as soon as I got into the vehicle, it felt like I was sitting back in my 1986 model. Toyota has pretty much kept all the dials and switches in the same place, except for the radio, so I didn't have to "learn" anything new. Love the sunroof, the engine is super quiet and even though the exterior is typical Toyota boring, the interior is very nice. I'm happy with it.

Bought used, now has 240,000km. Still has the original brakes, not a spot of rust anywhere (Canadian car) and in the winter it gets cold started twice a day every day as this is a commuter car. Haven't had a single problem with it. A little underpowered but hey its an economy car. Fuel consumption is 6l/100km in the summer and about 8l/100km in the winter.

I bought my 2001 Corolla used in 2003 with 40k miles. It now has 120k miles and is still my primary car. No engine problems that others have reported. My catalytic converter was replaced at 115k though. I've done by the book maintenance and have had no major problems. The only big repairs I've had were break issues that were my fault from overly aggressive city driving. I'm not sure about what others have said about burning oil...I haven't noticed it but I know little about cars. This car gets better gas mileage than the current Corolla models. I once drove from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis on one tank.

I drive about 100+miles a day and I never hve to worry about breaking down. Take care of this car and it will take care of you! I love the sporty look it has and it is compact.

Bought it with 77k on it, and now have 153k. Had to replace the struts... like many 2001 owners I have had a check engine light on for 3 years now... nuts, it turned itself off for 90 days and came back on, and they figure its either sensors or the catalytic converter. It's a pretty good car, but the gas mileage went from good to horrible with age. It's okay overall. The dash lights are gone now.. they don't work, and the engine idles really hard ... I hope it keeps going and going.. I aim to get 220,000 miles on it so if it does that I will be thrilled

I love my car but I am very disappointed with what is happening to my interior. I have already replaced my exterior around two of my windows. This is truly a problem with the manufacture I think. This is causing me money to fix and stress because of the way the car is looking. This is my second Toyota and I can not believe what is going on. When I went to the dealership where I purchased the car they did not show interest in fixing the car but for me to purchase. I am trying to find out if this is a recall.

We're scrapping the car today. It made it to 90k miles. It has the following problems: * The motor (1ZZFE) was built with a design flaw, but Toyota kept using it. Hundreds of people on the internet have reported the same thing. It burns oil until it hits a point where every 100 miles it burns 1 quart of oil. The engine went bad and needed a replacement starting at 50k miles * The catalytic converter is dead. * The rotors are bad and braking feels choppy. * The driver door handle simply broke off when I tried to open the door. * The clutch went bad at 50k miles. * Some smaller issues like a leak somewhere that mechanics couldn't find, causing repeated engine lights and EVAP codes.

I was spending $320/mo. in gas at the time I purchased this vehicle, so there were two things I looked for in my vehicle: reliability and gas mileage. This is the premium package for both. I drive my car all the time and living 30 minutes from work I only spend about $100/mo. in gas now. I recently took a small road trip in 530 miles, I used 15 gallons of gas! So I averaged at 35 mpg! I could improve this number by getting a tune up, an oil change, and inflating my tires. I also used my air conditioner most of the way and drove at about 75 mpg. Not bad.

I bought this car because my boss owns one and says how great it is. I must have got a bad one. First off, there is no room for long legged people. Then there's the fact that the 1998-2002 models burn oil like crazy, due to a poor piston ring design that let's oil into the combustion chamber. I need to add a quart a week! There is also a bearing in the transmission that fails easily, causing the car to shake violently at highway speeds. Plus, the struts and strut plates break easily. The front tie rods are flimsy and break at the slightest contact with a curb. Pre 1998 and post 2002 corollas are better, with the exception of 2009. Buy a Honda instead.

I bought the CE in May 2001 have 18500 on odo. The car is fun to drive except with ac on which feels like dragging a ton behind. The worst part is the CE is 3 speed automatic which pulls the fun to drive, but once over 30 it is good. It have a good milage and pretty smooth engine. The steering is a bit scary on highway (above 60) ans can be a problem if u have a huge lorry besides u. The interior is cramped and good for 4 small size adults or 2 tall adults. Another part is CE does not come with Rear folding seat and u have to dig a small hole in u r wallet for that.

The 2001 corolla is about as boring of a car as you can get. Too bad the 2002 made major improvements. I have had this car since it was bought brand new and still drives fine with some minor mechanical problems. The check engine light has been on many many times. I think the interior is OK quality and there are not any bells and whistles at all. Also, I noticed that not just my car, but many Corollas like mine are missing hubcaps or have aftermarket ones. That tells me the interior quality isn't great either. The fuel economy definitely does not reach 41mpg on the highway. Overall, it is just a mediocre car in my mind.

bought my corolla used in 2011. It had only 42k because a grandma used to own it. The gas mileage was amazing, and the acceleration was alright. The brakes didn't react well and locked up easily. I crashed because the car was too light, causing it loose control on a small swerve at about 55 mph. It hit a wall and flipped upside down. Both airbags deployed and the seat belt held on to me well. I had only scratches from glass and minor back trauma. It saved my life but it may have caused the accident as well.

I have had it only a short time but the 5 speed manual really makes it come alive. This car is rated to tow 1500 lbs and a Honda is rated 0. Get better gas mileage than Honda

The Excellence of Toyota

I recently purchased my first Toyota Corolla LE: What a sweetheart she is! I could not have asked for a better car at ANY price. She handles beautifully, starts when most other cars will not (the cold weather), corners like a dream, and looks like a "doll." I am very pleased to give my "Philly" a high mark of excellence in auto manufacturing. I would, indeed, buy another Toyota Corolla in a heartbeat!

It's been almost 1 year since purchasing my '01 LE - what a wonderful little car - there have been no rattles, squeaks or any other unwanted noises, and no recalls! the gas mileage is great, I get between 31-33 MPG in the city with the 4 speed auto, the ride is smooth and quiet - everything works great - the car starts the first time every time and I have no regrets about chosing the Corolla over the Focus, Civic, Sentra, Beetle and Protege - which are the other cars I had looked at.

Fun to drive in a stick.. really zips around! Quick, reliable, good on gas .. Bumpy, noisy, small .. but you're not buying a Lexus. It's a little expensive for it's size, but your paying for the Toyota name (and assumed quality). It's scary to think that for not alot more money, a Camery isn't to far away. Brakes have gotten progressivly more spongey as I've driven it (28k as of now) .. Oh yeah .. I got rear ended twice (once pretty hard) .. zero damage except scrapes. If you change your own oil, the filter is hard to get at and messy to remove.

It is an economical car. It rides smoothly. There is not enough leg room in front or back!! The seats get uncomfortable on long drives. Could be slightly wider and longer!

Toyota has lived up to my expectation. I did two month long research and compared with nissan, honda, and other manufacturers. I settled with toyota because I have been driving toyota since 1998. Tried GM and Ford buty had to take severe financial hardship due to repair costs. Only problem I had with this corolla is that the driver sit cannot be adjusted higher or lower. other than that this is a great car.

I really like my 2001 Toyota Corolla S. I like it for it's great fuel economy and spunky little engine. The styling both inside and out can be a little more adventurous, but you don't become a best-seller on looks alone. THe quality is top notch and i haven't had any major problems with it at all (I am a heavy driver). Of course the interior is a little cramped, but it's a COMPACT people! If you want something bigger, get a Camry or ACcord! Otherwise, i highly recommend this car.

I have had other toyota products in the past, but they were all older, so i decided to bite the bullet and buy a fairly new used 2001 corolla CE. the car look good from the front, but i find that the rear end is a little plain. the performance is fine, personally i will sacrifice performance for fuel economy any day. GOOD STARTER CAR THAT WILL BE WORTH SOMETHING WHEN I AM FINISHED PAYING FOR IT.

I have 35,000 miles on my car and have yet to do any work on it, save oil changes. I expect to go close to 100,000 before any major engine service is necessary. Definitely recommend for people on a budget.

Have had my 2001 LE with 4-speed automatic almost 4 years and I can honestly say I'm 100% satisfied with the car - the mileage is very good, checked it today and I got 31.3 mpg on my last tank - car handles well and the engine is quiet - I did have to replace the blower motor at 22,000 miles but luckily it was still under warranty - if I had to to it over I'd get the same car only a different color - dark colors show everything -
