Great Car except for the bucking brakes and entune

I've owned the Camry Hybrid for over 2 years now and, of course, Toyota has not made any effort to address or correct the "wonky" brakes. Except for the brake issues, the car has performed very well. I made the mistake of not test driving the actual car we purchased as it was delivered from another dealer and presented to us as ready to drive off. Once we drove off, the dealer would not take responsibility for this Camry's brakes being wonky when the test drive Camry brakes were operating properly during the test drive. I will never fail to test drive the exact vehicle before I take delivery. Update Review: I've had the car over a year now and it continues to be a wonderful car except for the really yucky brakes which out to be a total embarrassment to Toyota. Wish I had something better to report. Lets start with the worst feature...the biggest downside are the brakes which severely grab at low speeds such as pulling into the garage or up to the curb when parking. The effect is like a bucking horse as there are times one simply cannot smoothly glide to a stop. Pulling into the garage to the right spot requires 3 or 4 bucking stops and starts no matter how softly one applies tmom he brakes. It is bad enough to possibly give a child a whiplash A trip to the dealer with 2400 miles was disappointing as they acknowledged the breaks were grabbing, they said it was inherent in the design and everything was working as it was designed to work. A call to the Toyota Customer Service folks was not very useful as they claimed mine was the only complaint they had ever received....despite many complaints on Toyota Owners websites and even to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The lack of concern was overwhelming. At regular driving speeds, the brakes worked pretty well but still grabbed slightly. It was only when trying to slowly ease to stop without hitting the curb that they grabbed and bucked the occupants uncomfortably. The vehicle we test drove at the dealer did not show the problem but our car came from another dealer. The Toyota app Entune 3.0 was a joke as a navigation aid. Happily we are OK with using our stand-alone GPS. This is perhaps the most quiet car in its class and price range. We were unimpressed with the 2017 Camry Hybrid but very happy with the 2018 except for the brakes. Much quieter than the Accord or the Kia and Hyundai hybrids. The Camry floats over road bumps like a much more expensive car. Hybrid system runs flawlessly from gas to battery with almost no engine noise. Gas mileage has averaged 53.5 MPG plus ( I am a conservative driver) and seems to be improving. Front seat comfort is very good. After over 18,000 miles, overall gas mileage exceeds 57 mpg. Brake grabbing problems remain a serious negative Toyota refuses to remedy.

My 11th Toyota....5th Camry.....2nd Hybrid .....maybe my last. I even sold new Toyotas at a dealership. NEVER put one in the shop for repairs until now. Within days of delivery, minor issues....sunroof gasket fell into my lap. Sun visor kept falling into my field of vision....would not stay up. More serious issues.....drivers Blind Spot Moniter would not turn off...stayed on for miles after passing others. Wind noise on drivers side window....dealer somehow never hears it. “Scout Entune” GPS/stereo disconnects continuously. GPS can’t find even the oldest addresses.....worst I’ve ever seen....total junk. Probably the worst problem is the brakes. Beginning to drive, first thing in the morning, only the slightest pressure on the brake pedal causes the brakes to totally lock up. There is no way around it. There is no way to smoothly back out of a parking space or garage without everyone’s heads whipping....caused problems during icy weather in January. Then, after a few stops, the problem clears up. The bad part of this whole thing is the poor Toyota service. With my car now 6 months old, the dealer still swears my brakes are fine and that there is no problem with Toyota brakes. They forget that I’ve driven many Hybrid Camrys as a salesman, and put 70,000 miles on my own. I KNOW how brakes are supposed to feel, and locking up while maneuvering is NOT it! And my blind spot monitors? They fixed the drivers side monitor. But now the passenger side monitor only works about 20% of the time......worthless. Now they’re experimenting with the software, but they have no solid fix. The stereo? They admit customer complaints, but we won’t see a fix until the 2019 models come out. What?!?! As I mentioned.....I’ve owned 11 Toyotas, all trouble-free. Until this one. And I haven’t even gotten into the lack of USB ports or the drink holders that won’t hold our travel mugs that easily fit into our 2012 Camry Hybrid....or the wrinkled leather seats. Any good points, you may ask? 47 mpg on a 2,000 mile trip. Wow.....but not worth dealing with safety issues like brakes and blind spots, and the many, many trips to my Toyota dealer.

To get this car at a great price like I did, I highly encourage all buyers to use the internet sales department. I would also recommend doing your homework on the car and visiting your local dealer a couple of times before closing a deal. Have your dealer set up your entertainment/navigation system. I'm not able to get the navigation system to work properly and I'm tech saavy. I did read a review regarding the infotainment system being cumbersome to operate. What I like most about this car is it's very comfortable, no aching back or hips when I go for a long drive. I also love all of the neat safety features. When you use the cruise control and get too close to another car the car automatically decelerates and when the lane is clear accelerates back to the set cruise speed. If traffic is stopped this car automatically stops on its own. Pretty cool! I don't like the inserts in the cloth inserts in the seats. The seats are hard to clean if you happen to waste something. The instrument panel is well located. Between the driver/passenger seats is a very large center storage container. The glove box is large enough for gloves and the auto manual and nothing else. The trunk is huge, no problem with luggage. I've received quite a few compliments on the car too. I can't say I love the car but it's practical for someone needing space and does a lot of driving.

I hoped for so much more

I had to have the entire radio replaced due to a consistent echo when speaking on the cell phone (listeners end). This is now a known problem and if you are having it, get your car repaired before your warranty expires. Entunes/Scout is a joke. It is THE worst navigation system (if you can even call it that) on any car I have driven. Your phone must be plugged in via USB to even use Scout if you wish to see it displayed on the screen and if you have an iphone you can not view any other program on your phone if you want to continue to see Scout on your display screen. So if you just view a song you then have to reconnect Scout. Every reviewer I have seen hates it and I would advise individuals that use navigation in their car versus google maps or another program to consider not buying the car just for this reason alone. My son has an Accord and the Apple Play connection is so simple that I have no idea what Toyota was thinking!! I live in New England and I have not been pleased with the traction on the installed tires. I could buy snows and will next year (unless I can trade the car before then) but had hoped for more.

NAV SYSTEM LEAVES ALOT TO BE DESIRED

Love the car, quality is very good. BUT the Nav system and all apps work off your phone using your data plan. The NAV system will not go into a full screen unless your phone is tethered to the system. Yes, the phone must be plugged into the USB port to view the map on the NAV system. My mistake, I should have noticed it before I bought the car. Probably would have been a deal breaker for me. Hoping Toyota will make modifications to the system if enough people complain. Updated 12/28/18 Nav system is not good. Terribly disappointing.
