Technology and Comfort with Hybrid Efficiency

When technology and comfort come together, you have a really great vehicle to drive. Fitting a car to drivers 6-1 and 5-3 is not easy, but the number of memorized adjustments that the Avalon Limited’s front seats, wheel, lumbar support, and mirrors have, make it easy. I would prefer another inch or so of headroom under the sunroof as having only an inch and a half feels a bit tight. The perforated leather upholstery with air blown through it on a warm afternoon is great to cool any hot spots that different sized drivers can develop. The seats heat up rapidly in cold weather too. On the highway this car is a dream. Following the advice I received on my test drive, I set the adaptive cruise control on 75 and glide down the highway. If traffic slows or stops, so does the car, and then it accelerates right back up to 75. When traffic is light the car gets 43mpg at a steady 75 and in heavier traffic it gets a rather amazing 47mpg. Around Southern California the hybrid gets an average of 46mpg. Considering its size this is amazing. Having had two conventional gas powered Avalons and a Lexus ES, this 2019 Limited Hybrid is the best of the bunch. It is longer, lower, and wider than my prior highway cruisers; however, the built-in safety equipment has spared me from any parking lot close calls. Gotta love the birds-eye 360 degree view camera display. Along with heads-up display projected onto the windshield, it’s more like the cockpit of a plane than a highway cruiser. You don’t have to look around the cabin to check on the status of any of the car’s main systems or settings as well as the posted speed limit or the next turn on the GPS. Technology wise it is amazing, but the tech does come at a price. There are over 1,000 pages of manuals that come with the car. After half a year, I have made it through about 700 pages. Although my car came with Apple Car Play, I was told that there will be a free download of Android Auto when it is available. In the meantime, any good cell phone working with the built-in Entune Premium system works quite well if you read the Entune manual. There is much more to many of the Entune systems than what you are presented with on the two main screens, driver and center console. Only items I would change would be equipping the 18" chrome wheels with a good set of Michelins and giving the front seats a bit more headroom. After driving this car for ten months, I don't notice the low headroom like I did initially and have to rate the driver comfort as excellent. UPDATE AT 18 MONTHS AND 20K MILES - The car continues to be my favorite having had two previous Avalons and a Lexus ES, but two future problems have appered. First I discovered that the factory installed maps are a May 2018 version and can only be updated by the dealer. As the car is in warranty, I will have this done at the 2 year service, but with all of the electronics and internet connectivity something as basic as maps should automatically update through the data link in the car. Like most hybrids the mileage has dropped 2 mpg with use but that was expected and will likely continue to drop as the traction battery slowly wears out. With all of the safety features, I have yet to hit or scrape anything. However the car does go into emergency stop mode as I squeeze it into my garage parking place that has a storage rack right in front of the car. Overall I give the car a 95% but suggest that the manufacturer fix the map issue and extend the warranty on the traction battery. UPDATE 28 MONTHS AND 30K MILES After battling with my local dealer and Toyota Corporate Customer Service, I was finally given an Entune update and new maps. The dealer appeared to have little knowledge of the Entune system requiring 2 overnight stays after the updating process failed. They claimed to have spent 12 hours on it each time it went in. Finally Toyota Corporate sent them, either electronically or physically a complete update that changed the display somewhat and updated the maps. Now my car GPS is about on a level with my 5 year old Garmin. The Avalon Limited continues to run flawlessly on the road and the mileage has settled into the 43/44 range. I really enjoy the cool air that can be sent through the perforated leather seats on warm humid days. UPDATE AT 40 MONTHS AND 42,000 MILES The Avalon continues to be the best car I have ever owned in spite of the poor performance of the advanced Entune integrated electronics/GPS that came with the car. I routinely get 46mpg on my regular trips to/from our second home in the foothills. Sadly, I understand that Toyota is planning to discontinue the Avalon at the end of the product run this year due to lagging sales. I believe that the Toyota execs who stayed with the Entune system of the last half dozen years need to look into the mirror, and they will see the Avalon's killers when they do. The car would sell a lot better, if they had a decent electronics (I am not talking about safety electronics, just the audio/video and GPS). I intend to keep my Avalon for another couple of years as long as it continues to perform as it has for the last almost 3 1/2 years, but when I get my next car will be forced to go back to a Lexus unless the Avalon is revived and will be open to other brands even though I have had a 7 straight vehicle run of Toyotas in my family.

I love this car the more I drive it. At first it felt a little too big compared to my 2012 Camry Hybrid, when I bought the Limited Hybrid in July 2018, but I’m over that. The Avalon handles beautifully on winding, hilly interstates and I love and now trust the safety features like dynamic cruise and 360 degree cameras. The Lane Departure Assistence, however is very inconsistent. The collision avoidance has stopped at least three fender-benders in parking lots. Gas mileage has dropped (as is typical for current battery technology in cold weather) from a high of 43.6 mpg all-around, down to 41.3. I admit, I drive fast and not as economically as I could. One serious issue however, I found a puddle of gas under the car one morning (the tank hadn’t just been filled). I re-tightened the cap and the drip seemed to stop. Taking it back to the dealer they checked the entire fuel system and all fifteen internal computers but couldn’t find any leaks/error codes. Also I now have a faint yellow line from the filler door down to the wheel well where gas apparently ate through the Blizzard Pearl clear coat. Interior-wise the JBL sound system is simply the best I’ve ever experienced in any car. As an audio engineer, I find the bass amazingly present without over powering or masking the highs — and this is with the system set to factory defaults. The tweeters directly behind the front seats enhance the surround effect without sounding artificially compressed or otherwise processed. The only annoyance is on several occasions the navigation/entertainment touch screen has locked up. Only restarting the car fully restores it. I assume this is simply a software flaw that will be patched when enough other owners complain — as with Toyota adding Android Auto support. Finally, beware parking curbs with this Avalon. The bumper is particularly low in the front. UPDATE 1 year later: All of the above positive driving experience remains true. However, still no Android Auto support. The above fuel leak turned out to be a factory recall issue for a defective gas filler tube and cap. The dealer replaced both at no charge and I've not experienced any leaks since. They also repainted the rear quarter panel so the yellow drip stripe is gone. Then, my Bluetooth mic stopped working and it turned out the issue was not the mic, but actually the entire Telematics unit which the dealer replaced at no charge -- which also resolved the above NAV/entertainment screen lockups. Finally, I had noticed a new creaking sound in the steering wheel when making left turns. (How's that for specific?) After much diagnosis and experimental repairs, the issue was determined to be a damaged bearing in the steering column, which again, the dealer replaced at no charge. I still love the car, chalking all these repair issues up to my ignoring the axiom that one should never purchase the first model year of any car after a redesign. The good news is I've gotten to be friends and appreciate the honest professionalism of Andrew Bartlett, service manager at Toyota of Murfreesboro. He's become the willing equivalent of a 12-step program sponsor. He gave me his cell number and I can call him any time!

Just updated from a 2009 Limited to the hybrid limited w/ safety package, this is an amazing vehicle and a pleasure to drive. For low profile tires it rides well, but not like my older Avalon. And a bit more noise from the engine reving and tires but okay and the sound system is like home theatre. But what really sets this apart from my old car is the technology to make driving as safe as it can be these days. The hud display on the window is my new friend, the dynamic cruise works great and hope not to test the front and rear emergency braking. Time will tell how reliable all this tech will be but I’m loving it right now. The only issue is the height of the car, which makes getting in and out more awkward and have hit my head a couple times. Other issue is interior windows get a hazy film after several days when new. Hope it disappears like my sore neck from having to use my eyes as blindside and backup cameras on my previous Avalon.

With only 2000 mi on the new Avalon, I have a fuel problem!!! I can’t get gas in the fuel tank, sounds crazy but when you are hundreds of mi from home and low on gas it’s a BIG problem! When I try to fill the car today the fill tube filled up to the cap very quickly (seconds), then it burped a bunch of gas out of the fill tube. the vent line then started to bubble with more fuel in my face. No matter what speed I tried to add gas the problem persisted. It took 30 mins to add 3 gals of fuel so that we could get back home.. 3 gals got us a little above 1/2 tank.. love the car but would like to be able to add a little gas once in a while when i’m Getting a little low.

We have had this car for only two weeks. There are some very nice things about this car......great fuel economy, very nice interior, many safety features, nice handling, larger trunk capacity with rear folding seats, nice speakers, and fairly quiet ride. We like the Advanced Safety Package which offers a birds eye view of parking situations. We have yet to test Entune and Apple Car Play to give any comments on that. This car seems a little lower than some previous models. I feel there is a need for more interior storage. Maybe the glove box could be bigger. Maybe there could be some more storage in the front center console by the driver's and passenger's legs. Maybe the center console storage could be larger. So far, this seems like a nice, comfortable, fuel efficient car with a lot of great safety features. There is a lot of technology on this car and time will tell if it is reliable. I had an earlier review when the car was really new to me. I would like to add a few things. We recently got 45.2 mpg on a highway road trip....which is outstanding for such a large car. There are however, a few things that Toyota could improve upon. The front seat console often becomes uncomfortable because it can hit the driver's right leg or the passenger's left leg in the knee area. The square edge of that console becomes annoying. A redesign or more padding on the console could solve this problem. I recently experienced riding in the back seat with two other average sized adults. This was for a short fifteen minute trip. It is really cramped back there for three, even on a short trip. Two people should be fine. This car sits lower and you must be careful when exiting or entering to not hit your head. You eventually get used to it. Also, since the car is closer to the ground, you must be very careful when opening the door to not hit the curb or another obstacle. I'm telling you this because I have done that. So....some of these issues are probably caused by trying to improve aerodynamics...and to correct them would surely decrease MPG. 45.2 mpg is great and this is an overall great car in spite of the things I mentioned.

It’s October, I have driven 12,000 miles since June 4th. My overall gas mileage is 43.7mpg. That’s great. Toyota’s motto is “LETS GO PLACES”. It’s not that easy with the worst, most cumbersome GPS I have ever had. This is my fifth Toyota, and eighth car with an in the dash GPS and this one is a nightmare. My guess is they have a bunch of programmers sitting in a room who have never been on a road trip trying to figure what additional feature the can cram into the package. If you plug in your IPhone and tell apple play where you want to go, it starts talking and the GPS map shows you where you were going last week. It’s a muddled system. Enough of that. The car is beautiful. The interior is superb. The trunk is a lot bigger than my 2013. The safety systems are great and the heads up display is something that I have come to love. At the 10,000mi service, the Service Manager asked if I ever had trouble getting in or out of the front seat. I haven’t, but several of my friends have. The car is 1inch lower than my 2013 Avalon but it looks a lot lower and the doors seem smaller. It’s still a great car. I wish I could give it 5 stars but The GPS gives me fits every day. I’ve spent a lot of time with the manual and it really hasn’t helped.

I am in love with my 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited .As a former as a former Prius owner I was used to Toyota’s hybrid system ,which I feel is the best on the market. I was blown away with the performance, comfort and gas mileage on the Avalon. For the small price difference between the V6 why wouldn’t you get the hybrid ...difference is 42mg vs. 23..As their ad says “ Expect Compliments”...I have received a ton. After one year the Avalon has saved my life twice with auto braking and blind spot monitoring . The only complaint is the front leather seats are bubbling slightly . Other than that no complaints Coming up on 2 years since I received my Avalon ....still loving it and over joyed that I own it

It turned out that finding the Avalon Hybrid in Parisian Night Pearl (Blue) was truly tough. It appears I found the one and only one on the West Coast. This is a beautiful color which my wife insisted we find. The beige interior is also great. As we do not have a dog or youngsters at home, the light color is no problem. Having another hybrid is great. I love the gas mileage. While the car is not racer, it performs quite well for most of us adults. The finish and safety factors built into this car are what we wanted. It is a very comfortable car in the front and the back. It satisfies our desire to be able to take others in both comfort and style.

My Second Avalon Hybrid is BETTER!

I originally had a 2106 Avalon Hybrid and was quite pleased with it. The mileage was close to advertised, but we live in mid-Michigan and between wind, hills, and the weather, you don't always hit the mark. Summers were around 39 mpg and winters around 35 mpg. That being said, the 2019 has a different electric motor configuration and it attains the mileage with greater ease. I had originally always drove it in the ECO mode until a recent trip to Florida I switched to standard mode. Through the mountains, a little over the speed limit the entire time, it averaged 41 mpg! In Florida, driving a little fast, it averaged 43.5 mpg. I am back a home and the first tank full leaving it in standard more was 43.7 mpg. There are some minor concerns as listed by others and one I have not seen. The radio did lock up once and I restarted the car it it never happened again. Just had the 20,000 mile service and they said they did an update. Putting gas in the car when the temp is freezing and the front detection camera was not working, it would not let me fill the tank with gas. Once the front camera was working, I could gas it up. This has occurred on 3 times, so it is not a fluke or one station in particular. I have told the dealer and waiting for a fix, but the weather has changed and it may be tougher to find. The USB for the CarPlay should be up front where you can lay your phone, not in the center armrest, or at least a second one up front. Last comment, the cup holders are a little too far back for a 6 foot tall person as it makes it awkward when two people are using them. Otherwise, the car does everything well it is claimed to and I love it!

The only thing that kept me from giving car 5 stars is still the memory seat function. Dealership can't figure out what is wrong. It will recall my seat memory, but my wife's memory seat position is hit and miss at best. Her seat most of the time doesn't move when the button is pushed. The mirrors and steering wheel move ok. I've been back twice and they are going to work on it when the head technology service man gets back from vacation. (10 more days) I know it sounds unprofessional but that's what it is. The car is great. We traded a 2016 lexus RX350 for this 2019 Avalon hybrid limited edition and have only lost a very little bit in ride quietness. If it wasn't for the memory seat function I would give this car five stars

Traded my 2018 in on my 2019. 18 had small trunk issue that they fixed in the 19. Also HATED the touch switches in the 18 the 19 has real buttons that are much easier to use. HUD was found after purchase and I love it, my new best friend. I do miss the auto wipers in the 19 and have yet to figure why Toyota took them away. I would buy again and think this is a lot of car for money and the mpg is just a big +

This vehicle is amazing. It is rated at 43 mpg combined. I get 40 mpg around town and 54 mpg on the highway. Acceleration is excellent. The electronics are phenomenal. The various sensors keep you from hitting objects around you, the radar assisted cruise control make driving in freeway traffic a breeze, and the Apple Car Play is just plain wonderful. I use the HUD continuously. The car looks great with the exception of the "swallow the earth" front grille. I have wondered if that is why I don't see other 2019 Avalons on the road. Functionally it is a fantastic automobile, the best I have owned.

This 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited is the best vehicle I have ever owned. That is really saying something having owned Mercedes, Porsches, GM's, Fords, Chryslers, Alfas and VW's. I refused to buy a Japanese vehicle forever still holding Pearl Harbor as an excuse but was convinced when I found this car was assembled in Kentucky and that Consumer Reports rated the 2019 Avalon Hybrid Limited top out of some 260 vehicles in their April, 2019 issue! This vehicle is awesome from comfort to handling, from 45mpg economy to a sheer delight to drive this high tech "pleasure craft". My wife and I are totally satisfied with Toyota on this baby!

My first car was a 1968 Ford Mustang, and now my last car is a Toyota Avalon. I went from a brand new Mustang that had its first major remind within five years, to Toyota’s that never needed any major repair. I learned after owning three Toyota’s in my lifetime age 71, that Toyota was the only car for me. The Avalon has to be the nicest. We have the limited hybrid and I am extremely pleased with it. It’s quiet, comfortable, and gives you thrilling speed when you need it. On top of that, knowing that Toyota is for me the most reliable car out there.

Very uncomfortable seats. Awkward getting out. No knee room, center console takes up too much space. Awkward location for Qi charging. Other than those items it’s a great car. Would prefer Michelin like the previous years, I think they handled better. Please bring back the rear window blind and the remote start on the key fob. I will not pay 160.00 a year for remote start. If the remote returns, I will definitely continue to buy.

This car is smooth and quiet. The front headroom is tight if you are over 6 feet. The back seat was comfortable for a 6'5" person. There is plenty of leg room and trunk room. I get a lot of compliments on the looks and drive. It is not a sports car, but a very comfortable sedan. The Birds Eye View is great when parking or pulling in to the garage, no need to have a tennis ball hanging from the ceiling. The heated seats and steering wheel are nice in cold weather. The App is a nice feature for remote start and checking if you forgot to lock the car.

Terrible Front Seat for a 6'4" man

I'm 6'4" -- tall but not off the charts. I've purchased and still own two previous Avalons so just assumed this would work. The front seat is so bad that I can't drive it with out support cushions to undue the way the seat forces my front shoulders to roll forward. Then, when I use a cushion it puts me in a position that makes my head touch the moon roof, which I need to keep open (the ceiling cover part) so as not to be touching. More on the seat - when I first sit in it for a demo or a few minutes, it feels fine - nice 4 way lumbar adjusment etc. However if I drive for 30 minutes or so I begin to get a deep ache in my shoulders. So much so that if I drive for an hour I'll be sore the next day. Once I drove 90 minutes and the pain was such that I couldn't get to sleep with out advil. This is terrible ergonomic design - the car should have come with a warning. And, when I called the Toyota customer support line they just said I might need to buy (at my expense) a custom seat. On a $40K car one expects great comfort for the driver, or least acceptable. I've been a big Toyota fan for 20 years, and teach the toyota production system at work -but I'll have to reconsider going forward. (Having said this, the rest of the car is great - but this basic issue outweighs all else!

Seats were hard, ride was very stiff, road noise was loud, engine was very weak and noisy. This car is not the comfortable car it used to be. Would not consider after test drive. Toyota can do so much better.

Is there a Camalon in your future?

A wonderful, not very well selling, large sedan with good performance and excellent gas mileage, but it lacks many features for Toyota’s flagship—fog lamps, puddle lights, power folding mirrors, rain sensing wipers, and Safety Sense 2.0 that even lowly Toyota’s have. Unfortunately, the time has come for Toyota to put the Avalon to rest like most of its elderly owners (myself included) will be doing in 10 years or so. The Camry is still selling well for a sedan, but a better option, in my opinion, is for Toyota to replace both and build one super sedan in different iterations for the racer, realtor, and retiree. May I suggest the Camalon? In the meantime, I will enjoy every comfortable mile while passing gas station after gas station in style. Update: After 9,000 miles I’m in a love/not so much love relationship with my Avalon. I love the gas mileage (42.6 mpg) average, ride, comfort, and tech. I’m not in love with the fact of no AWD was available. I’m thinking of putting on some Michelin Cross Climate+ tires to vastly improve foul weather performance. The Bridgestone OEM tires are horrible on wet and slick pavements, albeit great for gas mileage. However, to be honest, I’m thinking of buying a 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Platinum after reading all the rave reviews. The Highlander has everything the Avalon is lacking and more, especially AWD, and Safety Sense 2.0, which the Avalon should have had at the getgo. I’ll keep you updated. Update 2: The Avalon is now approaching 11,000 trouble free miles. However, the blower motor has been making an intermittent noise as if it was rubbing against something, or the bearing is going. I checked an online forum suggesting the cabin air filter might be the culprit if the filter has recently been replaced. Voila, noise gone after reinserting the filter, but sadly the noise is coming back after several weeks, albeit not as loud. Time will tell if a trip to the dealership will be necessary. As concerns the prospect of getting a Highlander, the upcoming Venza seems like a better fit for me now. I’ll have to test drive both to see what’s the best fit.

Best Car I have ever owned

This car is comfortable and amazing. We have owned many cars over the last 30 years of our marriage including an electronically troubled Mercedes but the Avalon is way nicer. We had a Prius that performed flawlessly for 11 years before upgrading to a Camry Hybrid that performed flawlessly for the last 6 years and counting. Our 2016 Avalon has had zero issues in 3 years of driving. I have major back problems but the seats are so adjustable that I can drive for hours without discomfort. The electronics and safety features make me feel confident about my 83 year old mother-in-law driving it, that she will not get in trouble. We actually average about 36-39 mpg which is less than stated. My favorite part about the car is the blue tooth cell phone integration with the car. The sound quality is phenomenal where the caller can hear anyone in the car clearly when speaking in a normal voice. My 05 prius callers did not always hear the driver clearly. My 2013 Camry callers heard the driver very clearly and no one else unless they spoke loudly. My cousin with a 100k Tesla has a phone clarity that is garbage compared to this car. Fit and finish is well done. I wish they had a pass through that would take a snow board or two from the trunk to the interior of the car.

The car preforms as advertised. Over 50 mpg on summer trips. But lower mpg in colder weather. Excellent ride and handling.
