Oil leak

Ron, 08/14/2024
2025 Subaru Outback Wilderness 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

Less than 4500 miles and an engine oil leak. 2 weeks before dealer can look at. I have to say quality isn’t an issue. They have had this issue for a while. Must be a design flaw. Engineering problem. After its fixed how long before it happens again.

Subarus Eyesight system needs glasses

First off, thank you to Edmunds for having a place to leave reviews as its hard otherwise to get people aware of issues since you cannot rate cars on the manufacturers websites. That said, while there are a lot of minor issues and complaints I have with this car (Abhorrent Infotainment and controls, I am looking at you), for purposes of this review I will only mention the serious ones. To summarize, Subaru's Eyesight system is flat out dangerous. Automatic braking can and WILL engage randomly at slow speeds, parking lots, and (worst of all) highway speeds. Even if you are already trying to control your braking yourself due to traffic or poor weather, it will still engage (IE override you). Highway speed false activation's are particularly dangerous, nearly getting us into wrecks at freeway speeds since you basically brake-check someone in traffic. Further, the lane assist has no idea what it’s doing and is also a liability. Things like driving around a passenger, construction zones, or even heavy semi-truck loads are not handled properly; it will nudge you to run over that little old lady’s dog rather than cross the lane lines. Or choose the wrong ones to steer into when there is construction. I’ve exhausted my venue with the dealers and Subaru of America – They are absolutely unwilling to tackle the issue, instead accepting there is more risk for the driver at times simply to meet marketing and NHTSA regulations. I will say they are clearly aware based on my calls and unwilling to even engage the discussion (Due to the NHTSA regulation surrounding this thing). It is always addressed as “Working as intended” and they will absolutely avoid the topic of your safety and the ghost braking. In fact, twice at the dealer and Subaru of America case (Terrible support, by the way) if you corner them on the question "Please clarify - Subaru is stating that the car ghost braking at 65mph is considered safe and normal behavior" got me hung up on. Twice! I am sure due to pending class action suits they have been told not to even acknowledge or discuss the issues. That’s how much they are avoiding this issue. The class action suits pending for these state the older years because of when they were filed, but I can tell you this also affects the brand new 2025 ones word for word, because that's what I have. Stay far, far away from these things. Further, if you go for any other modern car please read up on forums on the behavior and risks associated with the newly regulated systems. The dealer sure won’t inform you before you buy and won’t do anything afterwards. People are currently very split on these systems and I think it really boils down to two groups: It’s either never engaged on you before and they like the “concept” of a safety system, and the other group are owners who have had it actually engage on them. Trust me, it changes your opinion very, very quickly.

Hardware yes, software NO!

Lakeside Gardener, 12/23/2024
2025 Subaru Outback Touring XT 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

I have had my 2025 Outback for a month now. In terms of handling, ride, acceleration (XT edition) it exceeds expectations. But be warned, you are also buying a mother-in-law. “Keep your eyes on the road!”, “stay in your lane”, “check the back seat before you get out”, etc., etc., etc., As a retired systems/software engineer, I deduce they have pushed out immature software that is officious and persistently annoying. You can turn off many of the half-baked features, but the scanner for your eyes is unstoppable. It flashes warnings and beeps to distract me and tell me to keep my eyes on the road, though I’ve been watching the whole time. Scratching my ear confuses the software and it blasts a distracting alarm. This feature is not mature enough for release, but here it is and there is no shutting it off. One fella keeps a hat on his dash to block the sensor. As much as I love the ride and performance of this car, if I had known how pesky this inept software would be, I would have kept shopping. It’s that bad.

Touring -great vehicle; too many profiles

JBTX, 01/25/2025
2025 Subaru Outback Touring 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)
8 of 8 people found this review helpful

I am now driving my third Outback - a 2025 Touring 2.5 4cyl. I've had the vehicle five weeks and have less than 700 miles on it. However, I am anticipating several long road trips in the future. I am very pleased with the vehicle as a whole. * The car rides very nicely - maybe a bit firmer ride than the 2018 Outback I previously owned, and it seems I am a bit higher off the road in the seating position. * The Nappa Leather trim is very comfortable. * The sound system is excellent. * The technology is good but requires a learning curve (more on that below). I like the large center infotainment screen, although occasionally I am frustrated by the number of layers I have to go through to get to what I want - for the most part, I am satisfied. * Wireless Apple Car Play is great! * The layout of the center cluster on the dash (and how to access the information) is VASTLY improved over my 2018. * On my 2018, the radio would turn on whenever I started the car. That no longer happens. * The cargo capacity is as you expect on an Outback. * Outback fuel economy doesn't peak until about 10,000+ miles, but I am not dissatisfied with the mileage I am getting in mostly city driving. All three Outbacks that I have owned have been 2.5 4-cylinder engines, which frequently get criticized for lack of power. I find the power adequate (and acceleration). * I love the digital (smart) rearview mirror - it gives you a much wider field of vision than a standard rear-view mirror. It's a bit disconcerting at first, but it's become my default setting. That said, it's not helpful on unlit roads at night. * The 2025 Outback has the Sirius SM 360L technology, which allows you to store favorites for both "radio" and "streaming only" channels. I like that. The radio interface also has its own voice search function, but one must press an on-screen button to use it. * I am finally becoming comfortable using voice commands - the only complaint that I have is that the responsiveness to the commands is slow. The scope of actions covered by voice commands is great. Here's what I don't like about the car. * The manuals are good, but there are too many - a quick start guide, a Starlink guide, an Eyesight guide, and the typical owner's manual. All are logically laid out, but I have to stop and think which manual I will find instructions for which feature. Tip: You can download all manuals in PDF format without owning a vehicle. * There is a user register feature on the driver monitoring system that will adjust the mirrors, seat position and perhaps a few other things to the driver's saved settings, The scanning of your face is finicky and is required if you update your settings. * There is a second profile system which pairs a person to a phone to settings (radio, car play, etc.) in the vehicle. I found out by accident at the dealership when I picked up my tags that each driver profile can have their own radio presets. That's very nice. What would be super nice is if these two user profile systems were integrated. * One can do voice commands to access SiriusXM channels, but you need to know the channel number (which there is none for streaming only channels) or channel name (works well if you only listen to a few channels). One can store favorites within the radio interface, but I am not sure of the voice command, if any, to access them.

We simply luv our brand new '25 Subaru Touring XT

The Title above says it all; but achieving the Sales Deal itself was a difficult, very disheartening chore, taking up almost 6 weeks of time. Let me explain. We new what brand and model of car we wanted; an old fashioned type of 'station wagon' from many years ago. The only manufactures of this type vehicle appeared to be Volvo, [too expensive], and Subaru with the Outback; and we decided that we wanted the Touring XT model, with the brown Napa leather interior, and the Turbo motor, no real preference on color. Also, on reading the Edmunds online newsletter on 'how to purchase a new vehicle from a dealership, etc.,' a real gem of needed information. Well, these gems of 'info', led to much frustration, namely, Edmunds forewarned us that most Dealerships include very expensive, over-priced Dealer Add-On Options and Accessories, to boost their profits, and suggested purchasing a vehicle without the add-ons. This, in the Phoenix Area, with virtually All Subaru Dealerships proved to be impossible; we simply could not find a vehicle without the Add-ons, even after request for same, the Sales Folks and their Managers looked blankly back at us, as though we were from another planet. Well, finally, at about 3:30 AM, 2 weeks ago, I opened the Edmunds website, requesting new '25 Subaru Touring XT models, and found a number of them, especially a blue one with the Napa Brown Interior, winking at me, telling me how it wanted to be our Subaru. Wow! Later that morning we contacted the Dealership concerned, and found that it had just been unloaded from the truck carrier, and had ABSOLUTELY NO EXPENSIVE DEALER ADD-ON OPTIONS OR ACCESSORIES, and that they were prepared to sell it to us that way; and after a few negotiations the Blue Touring XT was ours. [Note: It did have one ADD-ON, the LOCKING WHEEL NUTS, and the Dealership supplied them to us for FREE. We were and are HAPPY CAMPERS, We had all, but given up any hopes of purchasing a new vehicle, the Subaru, but give thanks, [Big Thanks], to Edmunds, for their very informative and helpful Website, otherwise, this transaction possibly would not have taken place. Will close for now, and advise anyone thinking about purchasing a used or new vehicle, study carefully the Edmunds Website, you will be glad you did; best regards to All, and Happy Holidays from Wickenburg, Arizona, Joe and Shirley Nagy. Outback on Steroids

Mike in Punta Gorda, FL, 01/18/2025
2025 Subaru Outback Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl CVT)

I've been driving a 2015 Outback for 7 years. Loved the car. But my wife said, "with the possibility of tariffs, maybe we should buy a new car now." There was no question that I wanted another Outback. We shopped, then leased a 2025 Limited. As I was inspecting the car, the salesman said, "it's got 2 inches more ground clearance than your old Outback." Well....that 2 inches expresses itself in a lot more ways than "ground clearance." This car feels much bigger. And driving it is different. The 2025 interacts with the driver. (Yes, most of that stuff can be turned off--but why would I do that?) The adaptive cruise control is GREAT. But you have to get used to the steering wheel giving you lots of input. After 600 miles, I think I've figured out how to go with the flow...but it requires some concentration. The 2025 gets upset if you just loosen your grip on the wheel for several seconds. It beeps at you, and writes you a firm note to "put your hands back on the wheel." Same thing if you glance to one side or the other foir more than a second or two. Yes, it feels as though Subaru included a nanny in the car to make sure you behave. After all, it's for your own safety. All that said, my wife and I really like the car. We got it in what they call Dark Mahogany Pearl, which makes the car look --- elegant. Sort of a merlot color. Have driven it on local roads, and the Interstate, and while the acceleration isn't terrific, it's good enough. (We have the standard engine.) The 11" touch screen is way more than good enough. It takes some getting used to, but I'm trying to regularly use the voice command (activtated with a button on the steering wheel) to make things easier. Navigation is terrific, using whatever Subaru built in, or WAZE, which it pulls up from my phone via Apple CarPlay. Sound quality is fine. One thing missing is a CD player--you can spend money to have one installed in the center console, but I've decided to put music on flash drives and just plug them in as desired. The power seats are quite comfortable, and the dealership had a "button guy" who talked me through the dashboard and set the memory for my drivers seat. Now, if my wife messes it up, the car looks at my face, says "Hi, Mike" on the screen, and puts everything back the way I like it (including outside mirrors). I'd like to make a comment about Subaru dealers. I heard from several after I filled out my car wants on Edmunds online. And they were not all alike in their approach to selling me a car. The dealer closest to my house gave me a ridiculous lowball offer for my 2015 Outback (2K lower than Carvana offered to pay for the car). The dealer I bought from was the farthest away--a 2 hour drive, but it was worth it. Their initial offer for my trade was $11,000, and their lease price was unbeatable. And the buying experience was award winning. The sales manager, the salesman, the "button guy," and the finance guy made the experience almost painless. (By the way, it's Subaru of Port Richey Florida.) Not sure if I'll drive up there for the free oil changes--but I'm thinking about it. Bottom line: I have no reservations recommending the 2025 Outback Limited.

2025 outback touring XT-great vehicle

2025 touring XT excellent so far, 21 mpg city, 25-29 mpg highway. Comfortable seats, quiet, robust and smooth power delivery and roomy inside. Only problem has been the key fob batteries run down quickly (4-8 weeks) and there is little notice of the charge until it will not open the vehicle-yikes! This is my 4th subaru and they all have been excellent and long lasting. I'd buy another 2025 outback.

Not Impressed

Traded in a 2023 Crosstrek Sport for a 2025 Outback Premium. My husband has back issues and had trouble getting in and out of smaller Crosstrek. I will say the Outback has very comfortable seating and the roominess is great. BUT, I have owned it since Jan 1st and cannot get gas mileage over 26 on highway. We live in a rural area so no city driving. I am very unhappy with mileage. I am also not impressed with the overall look of the interior. Seems very generic compared to my Crosstrek Sport. The sound system is mediocre at best, the tech screen is very slow and distracting. The steering responsive headlights are worthless, almost dangerous on curvy hilly country roads such as we have here. I keep SRH off always. The auto engine shutoff is a pain in the neck. I turn it off each time I drive. The cargo cover in hatch area is very hard to take in and out. I like to use it but with dogs in car every now and then it's in the way and hard to remove. The cargo mat is cheap thin plastic. The mat on my 23 was heavy duty rubber and bendable. Truly, more on this car to dislike than like. If it weren't for the facts that my disabled husband can enter and sit and exit comfortably and that I got 0% financing I think I would look for something else other than an Outback.

Speed: The 4 cyl. Turbo engine has as much or more pick-up than any 6 cyl. cars I've driven. Great for highway entry ramps! Safety: I've never seen so many safety features! I feel very secure driving my Subaru Outback! Comfort: From the lumbar support to the heated seats and steering wheel; from the self-dimming mirrors to the dual climate controls, my Outback is a very comfortable car! Convenience: The keyless entry, push-button start, driver-identification memory for seat and mirror settings are just a few of the features that make using my Outback almost effortless! I highly recommend the Subaru Outback for Speed, Safety, Comfort, and Convenience!

it is a station wagon, meant to haul dogs, groceries, kids, and maybe take camping etc.great in snow and rain, handles nice. the worst thing is how long it takes to heat up the interior, my feet on the driver side never get warm. MPG is not as advertised, and i have had PSI in tires checked, watched my foot on the accelerator, etc and dealer checked car out as well. nothing in the first 5000 miles is horrible (except the heat issue) it does just about everything adequately. accelerates ok not gonna win any races or overtake cars without a plan on the open road but most cars are like that. especially if you are watching the mpg.(turbo option is available at the cost of MPG but worth the money if you want the zippy engine) controls for environmental system are small icons on the screen and too low on the screen-bring back physical quick and easy to use controls! the radio cannot be turned off, you have to set the media to Bluetooth or use another trick to avoid the "noise" if you don't want sound.

First time Subaru buyer of November of 2024

The remote start app is incredibly frustrating! When I purchased my Subaru in November 2024, having a reliable remote start feature was my top priority. I love the car, but I expected to be able to start it remotely with ease and without any stress. If the app can’t function properly with any phone, then please return to providing a physical key with a remote start. My husband uses an Apple device and has no trouble starting the car with his phone, but my new Samsung S24 rarely works. It often fails with fingerprint recognition and won’t work at all with face ID! Initially, the app allowed users to enter a PIN for quick access, but they removed that option, leaving only the fingerprint and face ID methods. After spending this much money, it’s disappointing that the remote start feature doesn’t work smoothly. This situation makes no sense! Overall, I am a very disappointed customer.

I’ve driven Subaru Outbacks for the last 25 years. When it was time for a new car, I knew I wanted another Subaru, but thought I’d try a different model this time. I test drove 4 vehicles which were all fantastic — but when I sat down inside the 2025 Outback XT, I fell in love all over again. Driving it was a dream: comfort, ease, handling, everything I’ve always loved about the Outback but better! The touchscreen is intuitive, with 98% of what you need to control right in front of you. Safety features all over the car make it comforting to drive. Best of all, it’s FUN to drive! Thank you, Subaru, for keeping love alive!

Other than an odd shadow in the headlights and the poorly lit storage area behind the seats there is nothing we don’t love about this car. And the two items mentioned are minor. Would buy this care gain in a heartbeat. The auto break safety feature prevented an accident in the first week. The cruise cotrol and lane assist make driving long distances heaven. And the look and function of the built in touch control screen made every other car’s dash we considered look pretty rinky dinky by comparison.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Standfast J. Pumphrett, 05/04/2025
2025 Subaru Outback Touring XT 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

This 2025 is my 3rd Outback Touring XT, each one uglier than the last. Get the black one; it helps to hide all the 'cladding'. Compared to my son's beautiful Audi A6 Allroad, the Outback is just as comfortable, a hair slower, better riding, as capable off road with more physical buttons and fewer screens. It's also about $45k cheaper - and the Audi doesn't have a digital rear view mirror or rear emergency braking. I just did a 1500 mile road trip in three days in every kind of weather - including a blizzard in Wyoming and hellacious winds in Tejon pass in California, and while I didn't emerge 'fresh' after 500 miles, I never felt uncomfortable or less than confident in the car. The bad? Subaru uses no-name, low-bidder lead acid batteries, which aren't up to the electrical demands of the start-stop and entertainment systems. Three have failed on me - the latest right out of the box - so my advice is to upgrade from new. The voice command system is not just worthless but irritating, the lane centering is confused by crosswinds or more than gentle curves, and the toggle on the steering wheel to increase speed in cruise control now does so in 1mph increments. Why? The car now resists sudden steering inputs; a safety measure based on the assumption that the driver is an idiot. My '21 had numerous oil leaks all fixed under warranty, some - like the lower oil pan - fixed twice, all caused by using sealant rather than gaskets. I'll wait and see on the '25. So why buy another one? Because it's the best all around vehicle I've owned, my regular services cost $135 instead of the $600 my son pays for the same thing, and since I'm inside and the car is black, the refreshed 'styling' is less annoying. The '26 will be even uglier, but given all is virtues, it will be difficult for Subaru to make it too ugly for me - however hard they try.

Been a Subaru owner for 13 years and after test driving other vehicles, landed right back on the Subaru Outback. Love everything about it.

I would love to say I love this car, but I really made a huge mistake. Avoid this piece of junk. The computer has latency issues and the touch screen is from 1998 or something. And since EVERYTHING is electric the whole car is a huge disappointment. As soon as I can figure out how to get rid of it without it costing a lot of extra money I will jump at the chance. Wish I had my 2009 Hoda civic back>

Moved up within 4 months to a different model. OUTBACK. Super look..great room, smoothride..classic ice gray..Upscale lines, inside well proportioned, plenty of rear storage. Love it. Former KIA Sorento owner.

2025 Outback Touring XT. Almost a perfect ride. Turbo has excellent acceleration though mileage hasn’t reached estimates yet. ( only 1800 miles) Ride is quiet, smooth and very comfortable seats. No rattles, seams, interior etc all the way they should be. Now the not so good… touchy electronic brakes, over useage of warnings, start/stop feature annoying and has to be turned off every time when started or it will shut car off at every light. Biggest complaint from me is the really nice Dark Mahogany Pearl color, even with multiple layers of Carnauba wax, etc, scratches very easily and water spots like crazy. Overall, a well made, approaching luxury interior, comfortable car with lots of safety equipment. Not perfect, but close. Haven’t driven in snow yer, but the people who have here say 6 inches of snowy unplowed roads, no problem.

I love everything about this car. This is my 2nd outback. We kept my 2015 as a 2nd car in the family. Comfortable, reliable and lots of room for everything.

Quite and comfortable. On the down side all the safety systems can be distracting.
