Improve MPG and Wind Noise

I purchased my Subaru used in 2004. I have been extremely pleased with its handling and performance. However, its mileage is abysmal. I got a SCAN II computer and began hypermiling last April, and started to see decent numbers (30-31+) but with a lot of effort. Then I noticed winter temps and (I've read) winter fuel mix REALLY brought numbers down, to around 23+. Also that wind noise is a nuisance. By just tapping the switch a bit I've achieved prompt, temporary relief. Buy this car for snow and ice, but for warmer climes, a lighter FWD car might be better.

The car feels like a lower-cost Eurowagon. The boxer engine produces a nice amount of low-end torque, sounds great and the shifter has a nice mechanical feel. Despite the raised suspension the Outback is quite fun to drive and handles surprisingly well, though it exhibits some body roll. The ride is comfy on regular pavement but can be really bouncy on torn-up roads. The AWD system is completely transparent to the driver. The cabin is nicely finished though unexceptional. Seats are very comfortable and shod in nice cloth material. The premium audio system can play very loud and clear, a nice touch. Cargo room is plentiful and easy to access.

Not a bad little car

This is my first non GM car. I like it a lot. I still can't get comfortable in the front seat (I'm 6') and the gas mileage isn't as advertised (20-22 combined). There are great touches though but coming from a large SUV - there's things I miss. As for WIND noise - I took off the roof crossbars and it went away. Only minor problems so far. I'll write after more miles are on it but for the price it was a good deal. Can't wait to try AWD in the snow.

This vehicle handles more like a sport car than a station wagon. It holds the road well with no body roll and the steering is tight with excellent feed back.

H6-3.0 sedan is a nice balance between AWD utility, and 'near' luxury features. Smooth quiet ride, decent performance, rock-solid Subaru reliability, nice features like heated leather and sunroof, and most importantly, AWD for mid 20K is hard to beat.
