The best deal and a great car if you need AWD

2023 Subaru Ascent Limited 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

My review will focus mostly on how my impressions differ from the the "expert" review at Edmund. First in terms of size, the Ascent is shorter than most 3-row but it utilizes the space well. It has just the right size for a family of four but I have carried two full size adults, one is >6ft tall, in the third row across town with no complaints. A car that is bigger than the Ascent will be more difficult to park and drive in tight corner. On paper, Ascent's second row passenger room may be smaller than that in the Highlander — is that why Edmund thinks the second row is small in the Ascent? In reality, the Ascent's second row is roomy and spacious, even for people over 6ft, and the seats are very comfortable. In terms of ride comfort, the Ascent's ride is almost luxury car like, comfortable and quiet. Most reviews I read are consistent with that. The gas peddle on a turbo-charged car can be "touchy" but you should be able to quickly learn to adapt. By reading driving experience from people owning earlier and the 23 models, the throttle responses seem to have improved with the latest model. Once you get used to it, together with a tight turning circle and assist from the AWD system, you would find it fun to drive with lots of power passing on the highway with a full load. While most SUVs offer AWD as an option for at least $2,000, AWD is standard on the Ascent, and Subaru has the best AWD for a main stream car. I am tired of hearing about the Telluride. The reviews should take into consideration the markups they are charging, plus the added cost of the AWD, before comparing it to the Ascent.

Great in snow and at high speeds

We have had our Ascent for 13 months and have driven over 15k miles of mountain, city and highway miles on it. It has been flawless with everything we have asked it to do. Living at 8,500 feet in the Colorado Rockies, it has handled winter snow storms without issue. We have also vacationed through Yellowstone, Seattle and Portland (3,700 miles total). No issues passing on high speed 2 lanes, sometimes pushing significantly over the 70 mph speed limit. Very comfortable on a long trip. Only issue has been a bad battery, which Subaru paid for a new Interstate AGM battery. Negatives... Limited passenger seat only adjusts 4 way. Brakes could be a little better in the mountains. Android Auto is a bit quirky but works fine.

2022 Subaru Ascent Touring 4dr SUV AWD (2.4L 4cyl Turbo CVT)

What a great vehicle - it's missing a couple refinements but is amazing and wonderful considering it is the replacement for our 2016 Acura MDX Advanced SH-AWD that we never truly loved because of the Transmission being so jerky - in fact that same transmission being used on the Honda Pilot and 2023 Nissan Pathfinder eliminated them from our list to look at. I always found the Forester and Outback overpriced for such a bumpy ride and cheap interior. Obviously, I am willing to pay for quality, and the Subaru Ascent Touring caught me off guard! We went to test drive the forester and drove less than 1/4 mile before turning around since it was just junky. I had never heard of the Ascent, but the salesman said, "Drive this" and gave us keys to a used 2021 touring to try. The java puke interior looked horrible, but the ride and comfort were amazing! We looked and found a 2022 Silver with Black interior to buy and have been happy so far! The interior was the biggest shock in a good way compared to other Subaru models. The leather interior is firm but plush, providing comfort and the feel of durability. The accent trims of wood grain and two-tone leather really make it pop. The LEG ROOM in the front and second rows are enough for my 6'1" 270-lb frame to feel comfortable - I found the Ascent to be more comfortable than other options we looked at. The VW Atlas, Telluride, and Sorento were high on our list - but the Telluride was more expensive for less, and the second row was smaller. The Atlas was HUGE but the leg room in the front is limited in width from the console. The Sorento is just a smaller vehicle. The MDX, Pathfinder, CX9 and Highlander were all cramped inside for being so big. The seats are very comfortable, and the front driver and passenger get heated and ventilated seats - and they work well! Hot is HOT! Cold is enough to feel the cooling but not freeze your rump. The heated steering wheel was just put to the test during a skiing trip - my cold hands were loving gripping the smooth, warm leather after being frozen. The Infotainment system in the Ascent is simple and functional Android Auto is awesome! Something we hated on the MDX, Pathfinder, CX9 and Highlander was the location of the controls, and the painful steps you needed to take to change the temp, radio station, or enter an address. The Ascent is simple - while not the biggest screen, or flashy features, it is very functional which is the most important thing since you can actually use the system easily while driving! There is a small info display screen for showing temperature, directions, or radio stations above the dash while the main screen is being used for navigation. The cup holders could be larger, but what the lack in size is made up in quantity, rivaling a minivan with 19. The engine is a boxer 4 cylinder, turbocharged and universally used for Subarus. It's low center of gravity make the GIANT SUV feel smaller than it actually is when making turns - the body roll is very dampened. The SUV is supposedly slower than our MDX was off the line - but it doesn't feel sluggish, and the ride is FAR smoother. The CVT and suspension is probably to thank for that. I found I am never going below the speed limit or worrying that I won't be able to merge onto the highway. The standard AWD make turning the long vehicle a breeze, the turning radius is pretty good for the length of the vehicle. Safety - the stereo camera system does an amazing job with lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and mitigation braking. The rear doors have a giant latching lug that makes it feel like a tank. What I don't love are some of the luxury features that would make this rival any other vehicle. The keyless remotes are not personalized - meaning the car doesn't distinguish between Driver 1 or 2 based on the keys, even though the car has memory seats and driver profiles. You have to press 1 or 2 when you get in the car, and the profile is selected based on whose phone pairs first. If my wife gets the kid in the car while I'm fixing my cup of coffee, I have to go load my profile and hit 2 on the memory seats when I get in to drive. The touring also has power folding mirrors - but the button for them makes them fold in when pressed - not when the car is turned off - it's something so simple to build into the car - when activated, fold mirrors in when car turned off, unfold when car turned on - but that is not the case. The rear gate light is does not turn on when you open the trunk - so you have to flip a switch or unlock the car with the remote to get the interior lights to come on - annoying since the trunk is so big. For having all the luxury feel, they just missed some basic things to make this perfect. For instance - I get that wireless android and apple auto came in 2023 and would have been nice with a wireless charging pad, but the USB plugs for the connection are right in front of the gear shift. Just little things that aren't a big deal, but really would have made this feel luxurious and sporty at the same time. The car lacks parking sensors for some reason, so pulling into a spot or garage requires you to activate the extra front camera that only comes on the touring model so you can see what's directly in front of your bumper, I really wish it just activated when you hit your garage door opener, or the stereo cameras noticed you were parking. The rear sensors aren't such an issue since the backup camera is activated when you are reversing. On the touring model you can flip the rearview mirror and activate an additional rear camera mounted high that replaces your mirror view if the back window is obstructed - it's weird to use while but definitely helpful for specific situations. The 3-year 36,000 warranty on a complex engine is a painful point - compared to others being 40,000-50,000 miles (KIA's 100,000 warranty is VERY limited). We traveled to buy our Ascent in another state for $5,000 off MSRP and opted to use those savings for the 100,000-mile extended bumper to bumper warranty - still costing us less than a Kia Sorento. I wish Subaru (and Honda for that fact) just warrantied their vehicles as such since they tout their reliability. Not necessarily a Subaru thing alone, but don't brag about reliability without backing it up. Overall, this is a great vehicle - my family owned a 1988 Subaru Legacy Station wagon that got 188,000+ miles on before the head gasket blew. I imagine this will be with us for at least the same amount of time, but most likely longer.

Great family car!

We love our Subaru ascent. we previously owned a 2020 Subaru ascent premium. We moved up into a 2023 limited version. Both cars are terrific family vehicles. We love the fact that it has a great safety rating, the all wheel drive system is wonderful, especially in the hills of West Virginia and during the winter time. It has the third row, which creates lots of extra space for the family. It has great ground clearance, the engine sits lower in the chassis, so the car has a great low center of gravity with less top roll. So the car handles very well on all sorts of terrain. We love some of the driving features such as the headlights will rotate left and right with the steering wheel a little bit, which gives you great vision at night. The ability to see the car from the top using the camera is a wonderful thing especially when trying to park in tight spaces. The eyesight is a great feature and helping keep you out of a crash situation. With our limited version, we have leather heated seats which are really nice, and I never thought I would enjoy it, but we love the heated steering wheel. We also have premium speakers which the audio sounds really great. There’s many other features about the car that we love, but the overall fact that the car handles great, is very safe, has plenty of space inside, and can go anywhere you need with the all wheel drive system makes it a great car for us.

I have driven mostly SUVs throughout my life, and this vehicle is far superior to all the rest. The safety and convenience features available on the touring model are worth the extra cost. UPDATE: I am handicapped and need a walker. It fits well in back with the third row folded down. The car has many safety features which make driving a lot easier, for example, lane departure warning and automatic dimming of high beams. The only negative is a donut instead of a full size spare tire.

This suv is amazing. It's so safe to drive. It's an 8 seater which is perfect for my huge family. We couldn't find an 8 seater anywhere without ordering it and waiting almost 2 months. Apparently captain chairs are popular. We're so happy Subaru has 8 seaters and readily available. My wife said to me she didn't know she was such a terrible driver until we got our Subaru lol. she realized she tailgated a lot. With the Subaru it lets you know you're too close. If you're in cruise control it will slow down the vehicle according to how close you are to the vehicle in front of you. If someone jumps out in front of you the car literally pushes the breaks for you. This vehicle makes it nearly impossible to rear end someone. I'm just so happy to know my wife and kids are safe in our Subaru

Everyone who rides with us can’t believe how much nicer our back seats sit and the comfort they provide. The captain chairs in the back are as comfortable as up front. We’ve traveled a bit and it’s an enjoyable trip every time. It's been over a year now and I'm still a big fan, the only thing I would like is a hybrid for gas milage. Over two years in and 17k miles and my wife still loves this vehicle. I like to try different cars and trucks and have owned many, but this is the only one my wife says not to change. We are big Ascent fans, still would like to see a hybrid and not a plug in, for better gas milage and range. We have owned over six new vehicles since 2020, a ford f150 king ranch, toyota highlander xlt, ford edge st, toyota 4runner limited, honda civic sport and the subaru ascent limited. The only one of those vehicles still in our garage is the Subaru Ascent Limited. I do miss having a truck and it was a great cross country vehicle, but the Ascent made it easy to switch.

Better than the competition for me

I actually disagree with Edmunds here. I actually ordered a telluride largely based on reviews like this. But every time I drove the Kia I was a little disappointed. I agree that the Kia is more stylish and roomy. Surely, the Kia is more faux-lux, but I also like the Subaru practicality. Because the Kia is such a "hot" car compared to the Ascent, I was able to get a 1 year old used subi for about $5k less than an similar Kia. For me (6' - 215lbs) the, Subaru is more comfortable (yrmv). The biggest difference for me is the drivetrain. I much prefer the low end torque from the turbo and the 50/50ish AWD. Don't like the CVT, but I got used to it pretty fast. I'd take the turbo and CVT over the better AT and V6. I really don't like driving FWD and all the others always felt like driving a FWD... Kia, pilot, etc. Lastly on the size, yes the Kia is roomier which would be nice for road trips. But, living in a dense city, the narrower width of the subi is much preferred compared to larger rivals (my garage is 16' wide - yes you can fit 2 cars - but you have to be confident parking within inches of walls). If I lived in a suburb/exurb and never went into a city, I'd probably like the larger suv. I just never see this mentioned in reviews (because reviewers rarely ever drive in real urban location like NY, SF, Boston, etc.)

So far so good for 5500 Miles

Test drove and compared with other brands in its class and I think this is the best deal you can get for a great three row SUV. It's smooth, nimble in merging into lanes and great handling at tight corners. The 3rd row is useful in my opinion, it fits two adults (5'-3") with no issue (would not recommend using 3rd row for long travel due to lack of leg support, but most of the 3 row SUVs have this same issue). The extra leg support at the driver seat is very helpful. The multi-zone climate control is a plus if you have kids and especially people sitting at the 3rd row. I highly recommend the limited trim as I think this is the best deal for the money. The vehicle I test drove was a touring trim, but the 360 degree camera doesn't work most of the time and even when it's working the footage is blurry espcially at displaying the surrounding conditions. The touring trim also bundles with the navigation system which I don't need because Apply Car Play is standard.

I purchased a used Limited that had only 2600 miles. I test drove pathfinder, Highlander and Pilot and compared interior and exterior dimensions. I found the Subaru had the best combination as it did not feel as bulky as pathfinder or Pilot but the leg and headroom in 2nd and 3rd row were almost identical. I initially had a concern about the turbo 4 and CVT but after 500 miles it is so smooth that I am shocked how much I like it. In regard to gas mileage I have a light foot but so far in town and rural roads I am getting around 21 mpg which during break in period seems quite good. Also the ride quality is great. My first Subaru and test drive of the Ascent was an afterthought but really glad I gave it a try.

This SUV is amazing. Turning radius is awesome! I love the bucket seats in the back! I am in sales and spend most of my day in the car - I picked the Ascent because it is so comfortable! Lots of storage space too. It has all the safety features anyone would need or want. Overall it is just a great fit for me. I am 6’3” and I easily fit and feel comfortable in this vehicle. I highly recommend it to everyone!

This is absolutely a beautiful vehicle and so comfortable to drive and be a passenger in. My only complaint is that it does not get the MPG it claims to get which is 19-27mpg. We have only made it to 18mpg. Subaru needs to do better at this and give consumers the right information.

The Ascent has a smooth ride. It has a good turning radius which is much better then most other SUV's. It is roamy inside in the front and 2nd row seats. That is a big deal when all the males in your family are over 6ft tall. The only downside is the trunk space isn't great when the 3rd seat is up. When you are used to a Suburban it is a big difference. When the 3rd row is down it has lots of space.

I looked at a number of midsize SUVs before settling on the Ascent. At first, I was concerned about the CVT transmission, but after conducting a ton of research, I found that this isn't as much of a concern as I'd originally thought. Plus, I found the competition (e.g., Telluride, Pilot, Jeep GC, Highlander) to be priced at about 4k to 10k more than what I was willing to pay. I personally think the Onyx edition (not the limited version) is the best deal for what you get in comparison to the other trim levels.

Love the Ascent after 10k miles

Bought the Premium version a year ago and have driven for 10k miles - love the vehicle. It has lots of space, very easy in handling for a large SUV and has lots of power (the acceleration indicator typically shows 25%-30% in normal city traffic while anything close to 50% makes my wife start criticizing my driving 😀). We have serious winters here and I never had a problem in snowy or icy conditions - Ascent always feels well posed regardless of conditions. The only tiny negative I have is that I don't like the fake gear shifts on the CVT - it feel a bit jumpy sometimes, if you are more active with the gas pedal. I had an SUV with a regular CVT with no electronic shifts before the Ascent and loved the smooth and linear reaction of the CVT. I wish Ascent had an option to disable the fake gear shifts. Otherwise, completely satisfied after one year of ownership, had no issues and hope to keep the car for a long time!

Update #2: You won't believe this. There is a maintenance reminder to you don't forget to change the oil and other stuff. However, if you do a software update, it deletes it entirely...no more reminder. So, if you do a software update between oil changes and don't have some other means to let you know it is time to change the oil, you could ruin the engine. How hard is it for the idiots at Subaru to simply add a subroutine in the software update file to read and retain any maintenance data instead of just deleting it?! Update: two years in I have to say: DON'T DO IT! While Subaru claims the same HP and Torque as the Toyota V6, is is clearly only theoretical. The matchup between the teeny engine with the turbo and CV transmission totally sucks. You have plenty of power off the line, but when you punch it to pass or merge at a moderate speed like 40, it totally dies. It just sits there for a good 3 seconds trying to figure out which system is going to go first and it is DANGEROUS! Too many times I have had a truck barreling down on me when I expect to get some power out of this pig. Now I just wait until I have a LOT of merging room. Also, they claim to have remote start, but you have to pay a monthly fee to access it!!! REALLY Subaru??? Give me a break! My suggestion: spend the extra money and get the Highlander or Pathfinder. Oh, and the mileage sucks too...put your expectations on a combined mileage in the teens, not twenties. I just picked up my 2022 Subaru Ascent Touring. I chose it over the Toyota Highlander because it has a bit more room, has most of the same features, and was $4K cheaper. While I am not totally comfortable with a 2.4l flat 4 (I come from the big-block V8 era), it has plenty of power and you can easily tone-out the engine noise with a little background music from the 14 speaker stereo. I am working through the features, functions and performance and will update as I get more information.

This car I feel is like the SUVs of a well kept secret! Had no idea Subaru had a 7 seat vehicle and when we looked at this one and test drove it was a no brainer!! With the amount of technology this vehicle has and how smooth of a ride it is it’s a great bang for your buck! As a mom I especially LOVE that it has a 5 star crash and safety rating!

Poor MPG

My biggest complaint with our 2023 ascent onyx edition is the "said" mpg. We were told that we would have an average of 20 -26 mpg. We have had the vehicle for over 4 months. We have taken several trips (setting the cruise and being very mindful of acceleration to try and reach those numbers. The highest that we have reached is 18.7 mpg and that was last week after and 8 hr road trip. 😔 The vehicle itself is nice and has nice features but the reason that we went with this vehicle was because it supposedly had the better mpg in its category. They were wrong.

I buy cars based on the Engine, my wife buys them based on comfort and practicality. This car delivers on both. Got to Love that this Ascent, ours is Onyx Edition has the Engine from the WRX remapped for more Torque code named FA24 BRZ has the high compression naturally aspirated version. All I can say is Subaru really Delivers with this 2.4 Liter Turbo. Not much to be desired for more power. Just buy this SUV and enjoy its sleeper status. Nobody will suspect how fast your new Ascent really is : ) This subaru ascent is our 5th subaru in the last 12 years and we are in love can wait to see the next gen subaru ascent. Kids Love this car too. Honestly not sure what trim id recommend buy i think if your lucky enough to be able to own an Ascent any of the trims will do as what makes this SUV special is the 0-60 and quarter mile times. Its like an affordable Explorer ST with ever so slightly less performance with the trade off of much better fuel economy. If you need more acceleration than Ascent can deliver Id choose the SRT 8 or 5.7 RT Durango. Also be aware Cobb Tuning offers CPU upgrade for this Ascent to turn up the Boost then your in Explorer ST territory for around 15000$ Less or more. Forgot to mention handling is Descent and the Brakes perform well. Not going to lie 20 inch tires are expensive to buy if your tires wear out which they will fast if your enjoying the TURBO : ) Just don't expect incredible fuel efficiency and a fast car. If you drive this car slow it's good on gas if theirs no passengers. But we're definitely looking to purchase another subaru ascent in the near future 2025 ascent should be release in October or November 2024 let's hope but I can vouch for the 2023 Ascent Onyx for which we traded in our 2018 Subaru outback 2.5 touring

Since having this vehicle, had the following issues: brakes (three times to get it right) and the jury is still out. The hood was vibrating at hwy speeds (60-70 mph). Both the above has tech bulletins out however, it was up to the consumer to report it. SMH. The CVT has its moments. Beside the above mentioned, not a bad vehicle.

Well I made the mistake of giving up my 2022 outback wilderness with 17700 miles for a 2023 Ascent. I loved my wilderness as it was super reliable. Problem from the get go, my salesman is a great guy was headed this way to deliver to my home Monday, . got within 30 miles of my home all the dash lights came on and RAB,Eyesite , and all other lights came on, he turned around took it back. the service dept did diagnostics and, reset found no problems. Waited till Wednesday (today) my salesman gets it to me, we sign papers swap vehicles. he shows us all the bells n whistles and leaves. one hour later my wife cranks this suv and dont back out 20 ft of our driveway, all lights on again , no eyesite, rab, vdc brakes. I go check it out crank and walk around the Ascent . I smell ammonia very strong. this vehicle has bad issues. dealer coming to get it and bring me free rental. WOW how i miss my Black on Black outback Wilderness terribly. How stupid could I be. But all the reviews are great but mine. Im crying now.

Ascent disappointment

Traded a 2014 Highlander with 285,000 miles for this piece of expensive junk. Ascent gets worse gas milage at 19 mpg average after 3,600 miles. Driving more gently than I ever did with Highlander trying to get to 20mpg...impossible!! Worse by far the transmission is extremely lurchy. Very scary incident (provoking my review) merging onto highway when I got no (none!!!) transmission response attempting to accelerate, cars approaching fast from behind nearly causing my first accident ever at 58 years! When the transmission finally engaged, it literally threw my head against the headrest because I had the accelerated fully pressed desperate for an acceleration response. Service says nothing is wrong with it. Oh, and both keyless entry fobs quit working last week after one month of ownership. I can't express how disappointing this car is, worse car I have ever bought, ever! This car is dangerous due to the transmission issue that they won't acknowledge. I hate this car.

I can’t say enough about my bad experience with this vehicle. From the get-go we’ve had issues. First it was Computer problems to start with that eventually Got resolved “sort of”. The solution was to disable certain features on the car that were misfiring (so to speak). Also I’ve had to have my brakes replaced or fixed 5 times in a year and a half. The computer issues are better but not gone and I’m sure I’ll have to have brake work done again in the next few months as clearly there is a problem but Subaru can’t figure it out . I’m in the process of filing a second complaint with Subaru but haven’t heard back from anyone in over a week. Crappy car, bad customer service. Not up to Subaru standards at all. Do not buy.

I wanted a safe vehicle and the Ascent was at the top of my list. The ride is very good and the seats are very comfortable. Also, wanted the rear bench seat which was a little more difficult to find. It would be nice if there were more color choices/options available especially for the interior. Not a fan of the OEM Falken tires but they're okay for now.

The car has met all my expectations for this class of vehicle from performance to comfort to technology. 6 months in and about 6 thousand miles in everything is still as good as new. A 2 day cross country trip was a breeze because of the comfort and technology afforded by my vehicle. I like the fact that it's low key yet has all the bells and whistles of hihger priced and higher image SUVs.
