Nothing Better
The Boxster is a great every day driving car, but ice can be a challenge without specific tire changes. Be careful never to let water into the air intakes on the side of the body, especially while washing your car, as this can lead to serious engine trouble. The classic body holds its beauty and there's nothing more fun to drive, except for the 911 obviously. This car is great for kids in the passenger's seat because one can off the airbag. The 1999 year is among the best for engine reliability and Consumer Reports agrees with that in years past. What a value for the dollar. It loses only about $3,200 dollars per year in value. It is the cheapest sports car and there are tons of used ones are out there. European delivery was the best.
Porsche - There Is No Substitute
While living in Germany I owned a 924, then a 944 and then a 911 Carrera. I left them in Germany because I felt it wouldn't be fun to drive a Porsche in the States. I was wrong. I bought a Boxster as a second car and love every minute of driving it. Porsche quality and Porsche ownership can not be beat. The twisty roads around my house have become my playground. I've owned Z's, an RX-7, a Lancia and a Quattro. But I'll say it again Porsche - there is no substitute.

One of the funnest cars at any price
I got this car 2 months ago, and so far it's been absolutely amazing. I upgraded from Nissan Altima's and Toyota Camry's, so I know reliability. The only thing that went wrong with my Boxster is that the left window regulator is broken, but that happened before I bought it. It is a bit pricey to run, you do have pay well out of your pocket for small repairs. But it is one of the funnest cars you can buy, no matter what price level you look at. It's mid engined, so it is perfectly balanced and provides for fun in every corner. It's a bit underpowered, mine produces around 215 HP because of a better exhaust, but 0-60 in around 6.7 seconds is pretty brisk. Worth buying!
Great overall car with minor flaws
Pros: Great looking car. Drives well. Tons of storage space. Cons: Thank God for the warranty. I couldn't afford the car without it. Ergonomics need improvement. Why even have a mechanical speedometer when it's unusable. Replace with oil and battery gauge. For a high end car, the radio is mediocre at best. Clutch is clunky.
All-Around Performer
I bought my 1998 Porsche Boxster used with 45,000 miles and sold it recently with nearly 110,000. It was a wonderful car. So good, that we bought another newer one. The Boxster provides excellent performance and sophisticated engineering that can be easily used as a reliable daily driver. I needed to perform very little service on it. It only needed one pricey repair, an a/c evaporator. Buy one and startle the non-car people with the two trunks!
Its A Nice Car, A Really Nice Car
Just picked up my 1st Porsche, a Boxster. This car is not ment for long trips. Its a very tight fit, seats are a bit hard. It's also a bit noisy with the top up. It is nuch better with the top down. And, the plastic rear window is just stupid. Other than that, I love this car! When I'm in it I feel like Im Flying! Its very fast, handles like its part of me and Looks so sexy I feel a little naughty just sitting in the seats. And, I got a great deal on the price! Mantainance it a bit high but worth it, If you can get one, Get one! Get one! "And that's all I have to say about that."
Wondering if I made the right decision
Yeah a Porsche, I thought I was getting a great deal with a 98 and less then 25k miles. Thank goodness I didn't pay that much, because the first trip to the dealer for a tuneup set me back $1500 and was told that I would need a new starter soon. Then a week later, I was putting the roof down and the back window split down the middle. The Porsche dealer said it was my fault for putting down the roof in cold weather- it was 10C. This is a great little car really fun to drive! But had I known that the quality of the parts were that crappy I never would have bought it. I would have gone for the BMWZ3.
Water Leaks
Lots of fun to drive but, water leaks into the area underneath the seats. Electronic control box is there and expensive to replace. Once it gets wet its shot. There are drain tubes that have to be kept clean - and even then, a heaving rain will still leak in.
Buying it is the cheap part
I was so excited when I got my Porsche Boxter, but my excitement soon turned into disgust. Yes, there is no argument that this is a fun car to drive, not to mention it looks great. It's the high & frequent repair bills I can do without. The repairs are small, but their price ticket is over the top. I paid $750 for a spring for the roof, and $3K and all I got for my buck was 2 front tires, brakes, and a repair to a small oil leak. According to the tech at the dealership, this is not unusual. The scheduled maintenance will run you hundreds for your fluids and belts to be checked. Love the look, but no thank you. This is my 1stand last Boxter!
The Spirit lives
The Boxster captures the true essence of a sports car. I have had had several sports cars, triumph TR-3s, TR-4, MGA coupe, an Austin Healy 100-6 and four Alfa Romeos. Their spirit lives in the Boxster, top down, skimming the ground and cornering - I live for the on and off ramps. I feel like I am one with the car.
1999 Porsche Boxster
This car is fun to drive and has superb performance and handling. This car is "one with the road". It's low center of gravity and mid-engine design are the keys to its stability and agility. I bought this car in Germany and routinely drove it on the Autobahn at 120+ mph. It has solid positive control at all speeds. Likewise, it handles like a jungle cat on the mountain switchbacks. It doesn't have an overpowered engine, but with the proper driving skills, this car will do anything you want it to. The exterior styling is sleek and attractive, suggesting speed and performance.
My Get Away Car
I am absolutely crazy about this car. The handling is superb. I've been through BMW 635s, Z3s, Audi A6 and a 911 but my Boxster is by far the best handling car I've ever been around. It is effortless, precise as a surgeon and the exhaust note is stunning throughout the rpm range. A sexy car..it is a sports car so if you have a tender butt....buy a Lexus. If you want something that becomes part of you...buy a Porsche. There really is no substitute. They are expensive to maintain but who cares!
Porsche bliss
I have driven some nice cars in my time. For quite some time now I have been obsessed with Audi's powerful sedan the 2002 S4. Having driven a Porsche for the first time today I immediately fell in love. The Porsche Boxster is a excellent addition as a second car for anyone looking for a car that is loads of fun to drive in the twisty mountain roads, yet is still comfortable and roomy and can hold a set of clubs in the trunk. The Audi can be my family hauler, but my Porsche is my get-away car.
one FINE car!
the boxster... one of the funest to driver car in the world! i enjoy every sec in it!
98 Boxster
Excellent car! Fun to drive but needs more HP.
Great car
I've had this car 6 years and have really loved it. Mechanically, I've really haven't had any big issues outside of changing 7 headlights (this may be specific to the electrical system in my car). Also if you are hit and run while parked, I promise no one is going leave a note with insurance information (happened twice). Lastly probably as a result of the beautiful aerodynamic body design, I have had more dings in my windshield than I can count (I have 5 right now - I'll get to 6 and change out the windshield again). If you can see past these very minor issues, I would guess you'd be very happy to own this car. I have been.
Boxster
What a super car. I always wanted an old speedster and boy am I glad I did not find one, and selected this car instead. This is all of the fun of a speedster but with all of the modern conviences
My Boxster has no substitute
After many hours of research on a convertible I thought a Benz was the way to go. Fortunately, I test drove the Boxter as well. No comparison! This car handles like nothing I have ever driven. And the response of the engine is that of a finely tuned machine. The design is sleek, sexy and powerful and taking a curve at 60+ miles and hour instead of the posted 25 is the best weekend thrill! This is what driving is all about and those that think an SUV is the way to go, well, you have no idea what you're missing. There is no substitute - Porsche has it figured out.
A fun, fun, fun experience! Get one!
What an amazing auto! Even more fun to drive than it appears! Plenty of HP and zip, when necessary, and handling that makes you hope you never have to drive another car! And I thought golf made me itch for the spring/summer months!!
'99 Boxster is excellent 2nd owner car!
This older model, low-end Porsche drives better than any of the top of the line cars from other manufacturers. It is quick, solid and takes curves better than any other car on the road. After a year and a half my daily work commute is still an exciting experience. I can drive anywhere, park anywhere and the valets fight for my keys! If this is Porsche's basic model, I can't even imagine what a Carrera must be like.
Extra fun
Great little two seater and fun to drive , really solid and reliable, great value, and still feel the same now in 2021, car is now 22 years old and still a ton of fun and reliable

almost flawless
Every time I get an itch to upgrade to a 911, I just go out a take a spin in my Boxster. This car has the handling, the brakes, the top down fun, and plenty of storage space (two trunks!) The steering is super responsive. At 3500 rpm, the engine sings. Every time I get in this car, it makes me smile. Whenever I'm done driving I have what boxster owners call permagrin, I can't wipe the smile from my face. This car is best in the twisty mountain roads, where almost nothing can beat it. From the doors forward, the Boxster is almost the same as the 911. The only problem is that the 911 has the larger engine, and who needs rear seats?
Love at First Sight
My boxster is not the fastest sports car out there, but boy is it fun to drive. It handles better than any car I have every driven and is not bad on gas.
Allowed a retreat from the real real world
I am rating this car on what was available in 1999. I am not a gadgets person, I am a driving person. I own four Porsches-930 turbo, 928 S4, 944 and this boxter is the newest, bought them all new. I bought before the "S" came out or the Caymen, not crazy about convertables but wanted to try the mid-engine-phenominal!!! This car is unbelievable on the back hilly/twisty roads and does good on the hiways/interstates. My 928 is trhe best road car ever built-in my opinion and I have over 300k miles of experience. The boxter still draws attention when on the road or in a parking lot. The only issue I have is that I am very long from the waist down and the boxter is a little hard to get in, although the 2014 I sat in had added about 3" of leg room and that solved the issue, not ready to give up this one, I just drove it coast to coast in less than 3 days and it was very comfortable. 2nd/3rd gears are out standing, the others are very good. I run top in Michelin tires and get great mileage-two sets of rears to one set of fronts. The engine breaking is also great.

If you want a smooth and quiet ride...
Don't buy a boxster if you are looking for a comfortable, smooth luxury ride. I didn't realize getting performance (so to speak) meant having my teeth jarred loose over every pothole. I understand a sports car needs to 'feel the road', but do I have to have my face rubbed in it? I guess I have a 'Princess and the Pea' attitude, cuz I hate feeling every little bump in the road. I love the car, the power is 'ok', the styling is amazing, but they need some kind of upgrade or option for 'smooth ride'. For any sports enthusiast that says 'that's just the way sports cars drive' - not exactly true. Corvettes feel SO much more comfortable. But the boxster was a better value for the $'s.
1999 986 Porsche Boxster
We have 167,000 miles on our 1999 Boxster. We enjoy this car and it's fun to own and drive. Drive it to beach resorts including Myrtle Beach from Longwood, Florida. When I have an issue I take it to Porsche of Orlando and Bruce Cameron and team in the service department take care of us. For the money these older 986's are a great deal. Fun to drive, handles well. I did replace the radio and speakers installing a Kenwood and Focal speakers). I may buy a newer Boxster in the future, but right now we are not in a hurry. 2013 and up Boxter or Caymans are amazing and Porsche of Orlando gives me a loaner when I make an appointment for service.

Uber Shweet
The car is great! I drive from my home to class mon-fri and not a day goes by when people don't stare! It easily cruses at 100mph and has great highway acceleration in 5th gear. I found that the exhaust wasn't loud enough so I installed one myself and it sounds like a beast. Gas consumption is also amazing for a sports car, I get 26.8 avg. but who really cares! Get it!!!
Boxster Love

Fun Car
Owning a Porsche Boxster is a lot of fun. They handle great. It only seats two passenagers, but that can be good too. ;) Oil changes are pricy, but they only need to be done every 5,000 miles ($160).
Great Fun Car
What a great car! It makes my day each time I drive it. Handles well out of the box, but 1999 could use more power (more fun). Excellent service and NO PROBLEMS.
I Love it!
I Love my Porsche Boxster. She purrs perfectly, has sleek curves and drives the way a high performance vehicle should. She has more than enough storage space, front and back and looks sexy!
Best True Sports Car For the Money
Porsche did miss the mark by not making the Boxster it's new flagship! I've driven the 911's, the Z3's, corvette's, along with the rest, and bottom line is, if Porsche would have placed an adequate engine under the hood, the boxster would be untouchable from a sports car stand point.
99' Boxster
Recently purchased my boxster and have loved it. Purchashed without a warrently, so am a bit nervous but still loving it everyday.
That's my car!
Every time I get in my car to go anywhere I say to myself I love my car! It just fits my style and need for speed. Best driven on the open road with the convertible top down. It doesn't get any better than that. Great stress reducer! Great for the tan! I driver it year round, but desperately need snow tires. The car wash people love when I come through for detailing. Will upgrade the engine before I trade this car in!
