Great vehicle

I have had Pathfinders since 2007, I had a 2008, 2009 and now have 2012 since that year. I cant complain, it is an amazing vehicle, I have drove this vehicle from NC to NY to TX to AL, anyways this vehicle is just great for whatever you need it, great spacing, I have a family of five and we are super comfortable. NAV system is great, the radio sound is great (BOSE), only bad part is that doesn't have USB ports and cant connect your Ipod with Bluetooth, cell phone works great with Bluetooth. It came with a DVD system and two wireless headsets, that's great for the kids. Like I said I have had mine since 2012 and it runs perfectly, no issues, paint is still awesome, so I can trust that I will have this great vehicle for many many more years. I recommend to anyone.

An Educated Review

Martin Prieto, 09/26/2021
2012 Nissan Pathfinder SV 4dr SUV 4WD (4.0L 6cyl 5A)

First things first, you have to remember that this 2012 Pathfinder was designed and engineered in the early 2000s. It’s got a Spartan interior compared to other 2012 models, but that’s okay. This is still an old school body on frame truck, and I love it. From 2005-2010, the Pathfinder was plagued with a transmission coolant line that would rupture and get coolant into the transmission fluid. This would break these transmissions and I wouldn’t recommend getting a pathfinder from those years. 2011-2012 saw those problems get fixed, so those are the great years of this model. The VQ40 engine is a loud and raspy one, but it’s strong and reliable. God, it likes to sip fuel, though. Mine’s at 125k miles and I’ve owned it for about two years. It hasn’t had a single hiccup during that time, but it is averaging closer to 15mpg with a lot of city driving. If you want to get better gas mileage, you really have to stick to the speed limits. Interstate limit here is 70. I tend to go 5-10 over, which, coupled with the aerodynamics of a brick, leads to me getting less than the 20mpg hwy rating. My wife does better than I in that regard. The 4wd unit on this is a good one from a mechanical perspective, and from real life driving. The rear differential is a limited slip differential. That’s a really nice added bonus when you’re in a spotty situation. The Pathfinder feels secure in the snow, and it sure isn’t out of place in the dirt. The LSD in the rear let’s me do fun little donuts on the dirt that the kids enjoy. Again, added bonus. The interior is spartan, but it’s comfortable. I feel like the driving position that I’ve chosen is a really upright position, and though that works for me, it may not work for others. It has pedal adjustments so you can sit further back, but it doesn’t have a telescoping steering wheel. The second row is wide enough to fit three child seats comfortably, although it doesn’t have the most leg room. The third row is tight. I wouldn’t say it’s comfortable for anyone other than small kids. The trunk space with the third row down is actually great. Couple that with the rear glass having it’s own latch that can come off, and this thing is actually plenty capable of hauling long things. The ride isn’t great. You get a lot of bump steer. Bumps kn the road that are mid turn can upset it pretty bad, but that seems to be the case in most trucks. Truck suspensions don’t like bumps mid corner. This has an independent four wheel suspension, so I’m sure it’s nicer than other trucks and truck based SUVs that have a live rear axle. Still not great, but I’d rather have the comforts from the independent suspension than the off-road capability from the live rear axle. Personal preference. A family hauler doesn’t need all the wheel articulation in my opinion. I’ve only towed once in the Pathfinder, and it was about a 3,000 pound car. It didn’t struggle at all, which is good considering that 3,000 pounds is only half of its towing capacity. It did great. Bottom line, this is an old design that just does what it’s supposed to do. It’s good reliable transportation in all senses. It just doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of newer cars. It’s a handsome design, too. I really think it still looks great in this newer era. You just have to find a clean one. I would definitely recommend any 2011-2012 Nissan Pathfinder.

Survived a collision and totaled it

Yes, she saved me and my family from some major collision. Lady decided to pull out in front of me while I was travelling down the highway. I swerved doing 45 mph into the oncoming lane but my front passenger side contacted her front driver side and pushed her all the way to the curb, turning her car about 180 degrees. The airbags deployed and saved us from what could have been some life threatening injuries. I couldn't open my door as the front of the car shifted in and jammed the door. Thank goodness this Pathfinder was built sturdy enough to take such an awful blow. We all escaped unscathed and am thankful that I had a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder, any other car I don't think we would be as lucky.

2 years old with a little under 13,000 miles. Continued happiness with the PF. Seems to be holding up and is still as solid as new. No issues as of yet (knock on wood). Replaced the headlight bulbs with super whites. Drastic improvement over stock. Let's hope it lasts, with any luck our 4 year old will be driving it, 12 years from now, of course.

I was in the market for an SUV capable of hauling my recreational vehicles, carrying a few friends around, providing quality...all without breaking the bank. I wanted the Silver Edition for the features, and would not have settled for anything less. Edmunds provides an accurate review of the vehicle, which I agree with most points. The Pathfinder definitely has a "truck" feel when driving and a somewhat stiff ride. This is probably due to the fully boxed frame and the beefy suspension which helps allow the Pathfinder tow over 6000 lbs. The interior features make it feel more upscaled, which is common with Nissan. Overall, the Pathfinder is a versatile SUV, suitable for most needs.

This is my 2nd Pathfinder. The 1st one was a 2006 and was leased. Had a Murano after that but wasn't in love with it, I missed the Pathfinder. So, here I am...with a 2011 Pathfinder Silver. It's great! I really like the improvements made to the heating/ radio controls. The inside quality is there and the styling is nice. I'm averaging about 18 MPG in the city (even though it's rated at 15 MPG). It's great on the hwy, very smooth and quit. I've read reviews by car magazines and they criticized the rough ride...I'm not sure where they were driving but I think it's fine. Remember, it's an SUV...not a Cadillac!

This is my 4th Pathfinder and my husband has an '06 Pathfinder SE. I traded in my '06 Sienna xle for the '11 Silver Edition. I wanted a 7 passenger 4x4. There are a lot of crossovers out there but I wanted a true 4x4 with the capacity to drive out of my driveway without me having to shovel, snow blow or plow it. I have 5 kids and I did have a Suburban but it was too big for everyday use for me, so back to the Pathfinder I went. The Pilot and the Durango were considered - Pilot was too plain inside and out and didn't seem as capable in the snow as a Pathfinder. The Durango was my second runner up but the Pathfinder was a better buy for the $$, reliability and 4x4 capability.

Great Truck...

Awesome truck. Bought a brand-spankin' new one Wednesday night and am happy. Took the family to the beach and was impressed with the ride and gas mileage on the freeway. My only real complaint about this thing is headlights. Very hard to see, even when using the high beams. The SatNav system is awesome as well as the information display. No USB port, but aux input is there. The overall fit and finish is really nice.. and the Nissan dealer I dealt with (Jenkins Nissan) was very accommodating and professional. People complain that this thing "rides like a truck," but that's WHAT IT IS. It's meant to be tossed around and used as such. If you want an SUV that comes with a purse, go buy a CR-V.

...continued...Towed about 1,500 lbs. of rocks for 4 hours through the Adirondacks on Sunday and achieved an admirable 19.4 mpgs. The auto-shift is great and worked smooth going up the some of the steeper hills. Parked next to a relatively new Grand Cherokee on the ferry and the PF dwarfed it even loaded down with suitcases and the trailer.

Pulls 6000lbs. Handles well. Pretty quick handles like a truck, not for the spoiled. If you want cute and fancy buy something else. Good mpg on ther open road. You do your part in maintenance it'll last and last and last. Are there better? Of course, it ain't cute it's handsome. Lol!!! Tuff SUV, IT'S WORTH WAY PENNY.

we bought a 3800# travel trailer and my Isuzu Rodeo just wasn't quite up to the task of towing it. I wanted a powerful V-6 with comfort. Got this car from a dealer (it was the salesman's wife's car) with 6300 miles. Ride is pretty stiff and busy but better than the Rodeo. Step on the gas and you're GONE!. It tows the trailer very well and gets good fuel mileage doing so. We spent 3 weeks on the road last year, up and down some extremely steep roads without a problem. My one complaint was the standard radio was terrible. I replaced with one from Crutchfield and now love everything about this car.

Me again. Just used the new PF to tow crushed stone. Was able to pull 2,800 lbs. effortlessly. The truck did not sink hardly at all when the bucket loader was filling the trailer...our old '03 used to drop it's tail end so much that it looked like the rear wheels would rub. I will need to get a larger drop hitch though, as the trailer is at quite an angle coming off the 2" drop from the old rig. Stay tuned...

I owned 1991 for about 10 years and 2003 for over 17 years, no problems to speak about. Just gave 2003 to my son, still years of service left in it. Great vehicles; both of them !! This 2012 feels heavier and drives more like a truck, which I like. It is the matter of taste of course, I love everything about it. Sadly 2013 and up is just a name whats left.

I'd write several paragraphs but I don't have a lot of space...so here goes.....I LOVE THIS TRUCK! I've had it for three years and hate to turn it in in April @ the end of its lease with over 100K miles on it. It's reliable, fun, a work horse and economical. How can that be? I drive almost a tank full of gas each day with my job. I spend more time in it each day than my bed! I've seen it through all weather conditions and even terrain. I've NEVER had a vehicle that performs as well in all environments! If you think this truck drives too much like a truck...then you've probably never owned a real truck before it...and you probably had yuckie cars as well. I will hate to see my truck go but...

I am a the guy who buys something and if it does everything it supposed to do..I have track record staying with that product..I had 4 or 5 Saturn's...all good until they stopped making them. I had my heart set on a different SUV....but a friend recommended a Nissan pathfinder..I took it for a drive and fell in love....I just lost my job and things are borderline impossible....all I worry about is how can I keep this car....one of the few good decisions I have made...I still love this car....and am recomending it to all...

A REAL SUV

This is my 3rd Pathfinder in 30 years. The first was a Hardbody and then two more (2010 SE & 2011 Silver Edition). The bad? Gas economy is about 16 mpg. The rear seats are for short rides and smaller framed people, but they're available for emergencies. The ride is truck-like (but it's a real SUV). My silver Edition is 13 years old with 100,000 miles. No rust. It still looks good, except for paint peeling in groove on top of both front fenders (seen this on quite a few Pathfinders, actually). Engine has run flawlessly and strong. The only problem has been the AC compressor ($350 DIY + freon $80) and driver's side front power windows' button ($30 Amazon,DIY, 10 min.) going bad. Leather seats still look good (no rips) and heated seats still work. Headlamp plastic is fading, but lens wax seems to clear them back up for 4-6 months. I tow a 4,500Lb. boat on a regular basis and take my Pathfinder onto the beach. She tows fine and plows through the soft-sand (and snow). Machined aluminum rims are showing signs of oxidations, so I've replaced three with used ones. I've changed the intake manifold gaskets and spark plugs at 97K. It was a moderate DIY job. Shocks, brake pads, calipers and rotors got replaced, too. That was easy. All these things are normal, expected wear and tear type repairs. If you send it to the dealer, expect to come out of pocket about $5,000 - $6,000. (I only spent $1,000.) In terms of reliability, I won't complain one bit. The Pathfinder has taken all I've thrown at it. It's rugged, beefy, reliable, a solid 4X4, safe, and moves nicely at 80 on the highway (just completed a 2,600 mile road trip where I went from using AC to heated seats). With roof racks and a hitch, I put kayaks on top, skis and bikes. Using the hitch I tow a small 4x8' Harbor Freight trailer or a bike rack or a hitch/haul. Frankly, there's nothing I couldn't do, yet. Many people have these Pathfinders hitting 200K or more miles. Take care of it and you'll have a great SUV for $10K or less...at a time when a real SUV with these same capabilities will run you at least $45K, or more. .

This is my third Pathfinder, I previously had a 1996 and 1999, both unbelievably reliable and fun to drive SUVs. This truck is a disaster, rides horribly on all road conditions and after 1 year, I am still trying to figure out why the transmission shifts at the inappropriate times. There are much better choices out there, especially if you want to achieve any type of respectable MPG.

This is a great suv. I have had it for less than a week and I am in love. The Edmunds review does not mention that the SV has a 6 disc cd changer as well. The 7 inch screen in the car is phenomenal. I love the fact that it has a rear view camera so that you can watch behind the vehicle on the screen as soon as you shift the gear into reverse. I bought a slate gray color. It has the metallic look and looks really good at night. You can also adjust the brake pads to go higher or lower so that is great for comfort. Especially if you are a short person like me you don;t have to worry about being right over the steering wheel to drive.

I bought my 2012 Nissan Pathfinder brand new that year. I had the drive belt changed in 2020. I’ve never had any problems until this year. The check engine light came on and I had to change out the right/left camshaft position sensors and the crankshaft sensor. I did this myself. It’s still a smooth ride after all these years!

Factory Paint Flaw

brittadcock, 09/24/2011
2011 Nissan Pathfinder Silver Edition 4dr SUV (4.0L 6cyl 5A)
12 of 22 people found this review helpful

I bought my Pathfinder less than 2 months ago. About 3 weeks(or less) into ownership, while hand-washing my vehicle, I noticed 3 different chips in my passenger side doors. No dents. I brushed it off and thought about getting touch-up paint. While bringing the issue to the attention of my dad, a well-known, retired, body man and paint expert, we did a walk-over of the vehicle and noticed there were several chips all over the vehicle, from top to bottom. Though they were microscopic at the time, in the sunlight (this being a silver paint vehicle, they WERE hard to spot if you weren't looking for them), we noticed the spots were bigger than before, and there were bubbles in the paint. My dad labeled it as something called "surface tension", which is somewhat like a pimple. He said it is something that is on the metal before the factory paint was applied and it was simply working its way up through the surface of the paint, ending as a chip. Simply put, in about 3 years, my BRAND NEW Nissan Pathfinder is going to look like a gray vehicle with patches of silver shimmer. The paint will continue to chip. I took it to the dealership, Waco Nissan, which is the same dealership I purchased the vehicle from and showed them what I was concerned about. They told me they would get in touch with the local Nissan Rep. and he would make further decisions about my situation. Later that same week, I came in to meet with the rep and he told me that all they could offer was a repaint". I have done my research and I knew that repainting is almost the same as being in an accident when it comes to resale value'. Repainting my vehicle would end up costing me money when it came to trading it in;. Needless to say, I refused;. The Nissan Dealership then offered to escalate my issue to the actual Nissan company:. I waited three weeks for an answer, playing phone tag with the associate who was responsible for my case?. She would call, leave a message, say I could return her call, never answer, call a few days later, and then finally called to say they had rejected my claim|. The same day they revealed that they had rejected my request for a replacement vehicle, but before the fact, when I had taken it in for the first oil change, I talked to the owner of Waco Nissan, same person who sold me the vehicle, and he said that Nissan had not contacted him for any pictures or sent anyone else to look at the vehicle;. Basically, Nissan made their decision based on hearsay, no evidence. No one gave a crap to look at it and see what was going on with the paint, besides the original rep who came out a month ago. Since then, the chips have become more noticeable and the spots which were once bubbles have become chips. I don't know what to do, at this point, I feel that all Nissan is doing is working to get that signature on the dotted line and doesn't care to take fault for anything that happens in their factory.. I don't feel that it is fair for them to expect me to be okay with paying a new price for a car that needs to be repainted right off the lot. Simply, they don't care. The consultant who delivered the news even went so far as to offer the number for the BBB.

We purchased a government owned 2012 Pathfinder with 178,000 miles, 3 years ago. After a day of wash, waxing then detailing, she looks new. We hauled our 18’ camping travel from Kentucky to Wyoming, then thru SD & Montana several times with no issues. The reliable 4L V6 is the by far the best engine we’ve ever own. Enjoy it so much we recently purchased 2ea 2015 Xterra with the same engine. A SUV body on frame truck chassis is the best for us due to the off road adventures.

I had a 2008 PF before I got this one {a 2012). I owned 3 Maximas before these Pathfinders, so you could consider me a Nissan fan. I'm not a fan anymore. I'll likely not buy another Nissan ever. This 2012 PF has been a money pit. Both PFs I've owned have loud engines. The brakes are spongy. The suspension is boaty. The gas mileage stinks. They look cool and handle great in the snow, but I don't have very many other positives to say about these trucks.

DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE!! Bought this vehicle used about a month ago: 2011 Silver addition with 4WD, I use it daily for to/from work and have just taken my first long distance (5 hours) trip in it. The radio controls are crazy, the radio is incorporated into the dash (so you have no option of ever replacing it) and you have to reach all the way across the middle of the vehicle to the passenger side to change the station, the volume control is too near the driver, the heat/AC controls are between the volume knob and the station selection knob and I find myself adjusting the temperature instead of the volume. There are controls on the steering wheel, but with the issues I am having with the radio and display, I cannot change the channel from the steering wheel if it is on XM. By the way: XM is not a visible option on the radio controls, you have to push the radio button twice and then you can access XM. I have had electrical issues with the radio I cannot reprogram my stations, once the vehicle is turned off, they all reset to what was there before. I can change the station once the vehicle is on, but I have to adjust the radio every single time I get in. The display flashes bright then dim for no reason, I 'll be driving down the road and the display flashes. There is no navigation and the display is hard to use. The temperature is very difficult to regulate, it goes from hot to cold to hot, and on the long trip I had to constantly adjust the temperature to keep the inside from being either too cold or too stuffy. If you try to use vent without AC, it blows hot like it is coming directly from the engine, so you still have to adjust the temperature to regulate the inside conditions. With all that said, I wanted a vehicle that could go off road for bike races and possibly pull a camper, in those two areas, there is no way this thing could safely pull a camper - the brake system is not strong enough just for the vehicle weight, let alone braking safely with a trailer. Gas mileage is what I was expecting from reading other reviews, not the best but not the worst, I am averaging 16.5 MPG, on the tank it recommends supreme, but I cannot see a difference in MPG. If you are single and want a vehicle for off road and fun, the Pathfinder is great, if you want to take friends with you, your limit is one comfortably, you could take four, but the two in the back will not be happy after a while. I had the vehicle looked at by my garage and they said they had never seen of vehicle of this age in such good shape (mechanically) not one single leak of any kind. So I hope the Pathfinder will make up in longevity for what it lacks in usable space and display use. I am already considering putting it up for sale. Update: I have now been driving this Pathfinder for over 6 months, and have discovered the brakes freeze if they are wet. Nothing like driving downhill braking and sliding out of control with your front brakes freezing. I had my front brake pads replaced and the problem continues, I did some research and found out this is a common problem with Nissan vehicles. Electrical issues continue, the clock will not stay set, so I have to set it every time I get in the car the radio will not stay programmed, Key fob not recognized, so often cannot unlock or start the vehicle. SAFTEY ISSUE! can't start the car!! The sun visors are sagging, can't be used in the side position because the sag so much they do not block the sun and if you turn they swing and hit you in the head. Over all very poor quality in the interior of the vehicle. 2nd Update: - had to replace the whole brake system and 4 weeks after, the brakes started grinding again, though they have not locked up yet, but I am terrified to go down a hill any time it is wet, just waiting for the brakes to throw me out of control. My son has a Jeep, he drove my Pathfinder yesterday and commented on how little room there is around the driver, blind spot is really annoying: cannot see out of the right side. BAD BRAKES, BAD ELECTRICAL, SMALL INTERIOR, CANNOT TOW DUE TO BAD BRAKES Over all, I am not happy with this vehicle - spend a lot of time in it before you buy it. 3rd update - DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE!!! this vehicle is not worth buying. I have had it for a couple of years and have hated almost every moment. I cannot afford to sell and buy something else, so I am stuck with this nasty unsafe vehicle. It is not worth the fear and headache. Now that we have had day light savings, I no longer have to subtract an hour every time I look at the clock. The clock cannot be set.
