I have had several in the past, had a KIA, some other cars over the last 45 years. This is not a fancy car, not a sport car, a car you can have for 6 years and go 200000 miles with no problem. Good on trips a comfortable sedan

Basic Transportation and Nothing Else

KC, 08/25/2020
2018 Nissan Altima 2.5 SR 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl CVT)
9 of 9 people found this review helpful

Performance geared drivers should look elsewhere. With that said, if basic, economical transportation is your goal, the Altima SR is your car. SR is a value package that incorporates features from higher SV and SL trims and includes them on the SR to make it more appealing for those wanting a better equipped car than the S, but without being forced to jump up to the considerably higher priced SV. With the SR trim, there are only packages but no options; the base SR comes with upgraded paint colors, fog lights, 18" brushed aluminum wheels, subtle rear spoiler, paddle shifters, front obstruction collision protection, rear backup camera, front driver's seat with lumbar support, unique seat trim. Interestingly, for this to be the sport oriented Altima, no sunroof is included. A sunroof is a MUST for my next car. Factory radio is weak but the speakers are actually good. In terms of power, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder is sorely lacking, particularly when mated to the standard equipped CVT, which drones when pushed to its limits. Acceleration is poor, so do not expect to navigate passing or merging situations seamlessly. The car knows its limits and will communicate that with you very clearly. It hates being pushed. I do not recommend the 2.5-liter engine for this car. Hold out for the 3.5-liter engine that's good for 270hp if you can find one; the 3.5 was available only for 2016-17 on the SR but the increased horsepower would at least compensate for what you will sacrifice in terms of options in this trim level. Steering feel is unengaged yet gets the job done. With the leather-wrapped steering wheel, your hands will always be comfortable. Nissan seems to have had sporting aspirations for this particular trim level but if that was the goal, it wasn't fully executed. SR trim handles curves fairly well, is smooth on the road, and presents occasional road noise due to large wheels with thin tires. On bumpier roads, you will feel every bump. Paddle shifters are mounted to the steering column but I have found them practically useless since most of my driving is done on the highway. All the time, I'm getting compliments on how beautiful the deep blue pearl car is, especially when the car is clean. I must admit that she cleans up well and has an Infiniti-esque appearance. Having power adjustable seats with lumbar is convenient for my lower back pain, especially during longer drives. Door trim is well fitted and of good quality with soft touch materials as is the dashboard and center armrest. Hard plastic adorns the top of the gauge cluster assembly along with the sides of the shift column. Glove compartment space is ample as are the two storage areas underneath the center armrest, with enough room to store typical sized water bottles and snacks. Additional storage pockets are in the doors. Cupholders are intelligently placed in the doors, front and back, and in the shift column. Additional storage is included in the front and rear of the shift column. Fuel economy is this car's strong suit as I fill up once, occasionally twice a month between fill ups with a minimum of three driving days weekly. I bought this car at a time when I wasn't truly in the market, so I talked the dealer down to the lowest payment I could get since I was compromising on options that I would've preferred, stepping down from an INFINITI G35 Sport. All in all it's a good car and I should be grateful. It's a basic package without all of the current entertainment and safety tech that could malfunction after paying thousands of dollars more than I did on this car. I strongly dislike the lethargic feeling engine and the transmission droning, however, and I read horrible reviews about the CVT, so am always concerned about the longevity though I have a lifetime powertrain warranty. My next purchase, once I'm out of negative equity, I think will be a newer Toyota Avalon that hopefully I can drive for 250k relatively trouble free miles. Remember that the Altima is not designed for driving excitement or style, it's all about functionality and this utilitarian approach will satisfy most consumers not expecting anything more.

Drove from Michigan to Arizona

This was an extremely great purchase for me. I got my 2018 Altima in November of 2018. It had 6,000 mile on it. I was some what pleased with it. It grew on me over the next few months. I totally fell in love with it when I took a job in Phoenix, AZ. I was living in Southfield, MI and was relocating to Arizona. My nephew and I decided to drive my Nissan from Michigan all the way to Phoenix, AZ. This car was AWESOME. We only filled up 4 times, 4 times and we drove straight through, we did not stop to sleep along the way. I am forever a Nissan customer now. I loved the ride and how it handled. This was, by far, one of the best cars I have ever owned. Thank you Nissan and I will be purchasing more Nissan products in the future.

Just drove a 2018 Nissan Altima all the way from Las Vegas Nevada to Missouri through winter storm Bruce the traction control work excellent over the mountain passes in Colorado on ice packed snow roads following that we had another 500 miles or so of ice pack roads through Kansas and into Missouri all y'all saying that your cars don't work good in the snow is because you can't drive in the snow every time we started to slide the traction control would take over and we would even out learn how to drive your car if you give before you give it a bad review.

This is our fifth Nissan Altima...obviously we are very pleased with the car! After retirement, we switched from the more expensive Maxima to the Altima as our family car. Compared to other vehicles similarly equipped, from other manufacturers, the Altima was the best priced. I know from 10+ years of driving these Altimas that they are reliable (I haven't had any mechanical issues with any of them!), get above-average gas mileage, and offer a very enjoyable driving/riding experience! I will definitely continue to buy Nissan vehicles, specifically the Altima!

I have had no issues with this car. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the CVT transmission is a little loud when I speed up. It is minor to me.

This is my second Nissan Altima. In 2006 a wreckless driver hit my 2000 Nissan Altima driver's side at 55mph on I85 and totaled my car and smashed my door to not being able to open it, but I had no injury, the driver's cage surround is safe. My 2018 I love! It really drives like a sports car, is zippy accelerating going up mountain roads, handles corners tight and stops on a dime as I discovered this week when a driver came around a blind mountain curve and was hogging the whole road! I didn't get all wheel drive as I am retired and don't drive in snow or ice or heavy rain. It's the other driver I don't want to drive near in bad weather. Love my car!

DO NOT BUY A NISSAN!

DO NOT BUY THIS VEHICLE! Spend the couple extra thousand dollars to buy a Sonata, Accord, or Camry. The transmission is horrible. I have spent more time at the dealership trying to figure out the problem than I have actually driving it! They put a recording device on my car after they couldn't find the problem, and the problem stopped. Come to find out, the device is made by the same company that manufactures the transmission! I think that device actually fixed the problem. As soon as it was taken off, the problems started again. Not only that, when you press the brakes, the car does some type of rolling thing before it actually stops. It is hard to explain. It does not stop like a regular car. The only thing good about this car is the gas mileage. They lose their value so bad that you will be upside down until you almost pay it off. Skip Nissan alltogether.

I drove one of these as a rental car with less than 5,000 miles on it and the transmission was already clunking and making a buzzing sound when accelerating. Engine has decent power but the transmission is garbage (like all nissans). The interior isn’t horrible but nothing compared to a Toyota or Honda. It drives like an older car in terms of handling. I recommend you stay away from these cars. DO NOT BUY NISSANS!!!!! Save yourself time and money in the long run. Buy a Toyota or Honda

This car may be good looking but it's a "sheep in wolf's clothing". Recently I rented this car because Altimas always had a very nice look to them. My first impressions - gutless, bulky and with the cheap run-flat tires was noisy and all over the road. It's handling was "boat like" and the automatic transmission left alot to be desired. Before you considering buying one, rent one and decide for yourself. I was less than impressed with it.

This is the first and last Nissan I have owned. The car stinks after driving it 10 minutes like burnt plastic, it has shut off while driving it causing me to stall in oncoming traffic. The sensor for an obstruction in front of you goes off all the time for no reason. Can not shut off features like automatic locks or the low outside temp at 36°. Problems with the windshield. Getting the car to a Nissan dealership requires me to use vacation time. The closest dealership with service is an hour away and only open normal business hours and service is not open on saturdays.

I had a 2009 Altima. I loved it. Very comfortable and great interior quality. When a deer got depressed and decided to commit suicide on the interstate there wasn’t much of a question as to what car we were getting. We’ve both regretted it nearly every day since. First problem is the “leather” interior is anything but leather. It’s cheap crap. The whole interior feels cheap and plastic unlike the older car. The second gripe is the headlights. I absolutely despise them. Doesn’t matter how they’re adjusted. If you’re in any kind of uneven road it looks to the oncoming traffic like you’re flashing your high beams because of the projector lenses. Get used to people flashing their lights and getting angry. Also unlike the old car we’ve had mechanical issues. I also despise the dealer. In general, I hate this car and have no desire to ever buy anothe Altima.

Now that I have had it over a year, not as impressed as I was. It's too big of a car for me - I was talked into it. Hard to turn into my driveway and carport. Just really don't care for it. Would rather have a lower mileage, older car - say, a Kia Optima and I always prefer a stick shift. This place didn't have them so I had to get automatic.

SR is super sharp. I coasted into the dealership as my van broke down. My new SR was just waiting for me. Added heated seats easily as after market. Drove off into the sunset. Super happy!

I am not new to Nissan. I have always loved Nissan's... Then I went and did a dumb thing and bought this 2018 Altima and OMG... I am SOOOOO mad at myself... Seats are frustratingly uncomfortable..20 miles in and my feet are numb and my back hurts. steering and handling is so poor that I swore up and down the struts or rack n pinion is bad... IT'S NOT. The ride is rough and loud... witch you should be able to cover the road noise by turning on the stereo but unfortunately Nissan has left a lot there too be desired as well... sound system is horrid. Majorly lacking in the technology category. The car has a SQUISHED down and stretched out look to it and these wheels seem to be too small for the car. The mirrors, rearview and side, all throw some very bright head lights in your face from traffic behind you at night.. I think Nissan must have had a pile of old 80's mirrors laying around somewhere and used them on these Altimas. The price is not great either. Big enough price tag that Nissan could have thrown us a bone with a little meat on it. The breaks dont stop the car right and they started to SQUEAL 2 days in. It puts itself in hill assist mode when on flat ground, the front radar constantly beeps at you and then says its unavailable because it's obstructed. The entire inside of the car lights up RED when you turn on the lights except for the speedometer area. Why red? It also is equipped with manual mode but no easy to shift... leave the manual mode out. Why do we have to pay for that if it can't be used. Roomy inside, big trunk, remote start... are all the good things..

2018 Altima 's An Ultimate Drive

Based on features, my Altima is the ultimate driving enjoyment. I have almost every gadget a car of that year could have to make it a fun ride. On cold days, the heated steering wheel and seats keep you warm as the heater and defroster roast you out. AC works well as the heater. radio systems work well also. I enjoy the pickup power that the engine provides as well as how well it responds. I was able to avoid a serious accident as a result of how it responded to the serious situation. I am well pleased with the body style, the handling and performance of the car.

I have just picked up my car at a convenience store; I had to leave it over night because I could not drive it home at 3pm due to snow fall. It could not make it over small hills on township roadways. The same roads my Nissan 2014 Altima made with "no" problems. I have larger wheels the curb weight is 100 pounds heavier. The car has less than 7,000 miles so the tires "should' be fine. This experience last night in eastern Pa makes me question, why I bought another Altima!!!! I'm thinking about getting out of the lease.......... It should be stated that it gets great long road mileage - to Erie PA 38.1 mpg. Now that was perfect but snow just not built for it.........next lease getting SUV!

I bought my 2016 Nissan Altima about a year ago with 30k miles already on it. It’s a beautiful sleek looking car on the inside and out. Fuel economy is excellent and I feel safe and protected. HOWEVER, I drive a LOT, I have already put 30k miles on my car in a year so I can say with confidence that the driver seat has ZERO lumbar (lower back) support. I have to ice and heat my back after any extended period of driving. So uncomfortable after about 30 minutes. Road trips are misery. I’m only a 21 year old, with this major of back pain from this car is ridiculous. If this design flaw is fixed then I would have zero complaints about this car.

Wow. This thing is horrible. Too low to the ground. Feels dangerous to look at only large bumpers at your head height. Rides very bumpy and does not damp out any vibrations. Never had a Nissan but after this experience, I never will consider one an option.

2018 Nissan Altima Transmission problems

I have a 2018 Nissan Altima which i bought from a small car dealership in Dallas. It ran trouble free for 2 years and currently with 65K miles on it, check engine light comes on P0500 Vehicle Speed Sen A and P1574 ASCD VHL Speed SEN. The symptoms being when pressing the gas, RPM and engine noise goes up, but pick up/acceleration non-responsive (or less than it used to be). It obviously has to do with automatic transmission. Taking the car to small repair shop, they initially thought it could be the ABS and speed sensor, but then found metal shavings in transmission oil and basically threw me the cross sign- just told me to pick up the car and nothing they can do. They also told me that this car is well known for this kind of transmission issue and to do some online research. I was taken aback to say the least. I took it to Courtesy Nissan in Richardson, TX. It was very nice and swanky place. The person told me initially that the diagnostic charge would be $150. Then as I explained the symptoms and commented it could be tied to the transmission.he immediately said - "Diagnostic for transmission is $200". I agreed to that..I'd rather get a complete written diagnostic from a dealer associated with Nissan manufacturer. The same day I got an automated text message (some kind of boilerplate standard template they use)- with an 8 point "review the inspection and approve the recommendations". mostly useless items. With one that needed immediate attention tied to the check engine light TDIAG: TRANSMISSION CONCERN. FOUND EVIDENCE OF RODENT DAMAGE. NECESSARY TO DO PIN-POINT TESTING OF ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS TO DETERMINE RODENT DAMAGE $522.05. Basically their boilerplate whenever they find this kind of check engine code, they're going to attribute rodent and won't go further until you pay the additional charges. Now a) I maintain a clean house in a good neighborhood with pest control and no rodents. b) I am an electrical engineer and been in the industry and i know frayed wiring (if true) in this case is likely due to Nissan cost cutting - using substandard insulation shielding and not following standard best practices of wiring safety. A rodent in this case is a convenient excuse here to get additional diagnostic charge. But the bigger issue it could be systemic problem with the transmission of this make/model. I have agreed to pay the extra "rodent charge" to see what other pest charges they will throw on next before really give the root cause and actual repair charges.
