Beauty at a cost
I've had two 2nd gen GSXs. These cars are very nice looking, the AWD is great for performance in the snow, wet and dry. The turbo engine has pretty good torque, but it has noticeable turbo lag and the engine runs out of breath at about 6000 RPM, so the fun power band is actually relatively narrow. The mechanical and electrical systems on the car are far from reliable. The dashboard design, while attractive, is ergonomically flawed as the shift lever blocks the stereo. There are squeaks and rattles from interior panes and suspension parts, rain can leak into the cabin. If you're tall, cars with a sun roof can be a tight fit.
Watch out for Crankwalk!!!!
This is a great car, fast, cool looking, dreamy handling, comfortable, but, every eclipse GS-T or GSX from 1995-1999 has a good possibility of coming down with "crankwalk". It's a $4500 problem with no real permanent solution. Trust me, it's enough to make you NOT want to buy this great car. Take it from someone who has gone through this and done A LOT of research. Sorry folks. I love my GSX, but it's bittersweet. I'd recommend not taking your chances. I paid the price with my ignorance.

1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T
I have had my car for a month. I got it from my uncle who bought if from an auction, so I have no idea what it's history is. But I do know that it was originally bought in NC (I'm in MI)...explains most of the 142k miles on it. Sometimes it won't shift into reverse or first gear, and it takes two or three tries to cold start the car. I believe that the charcoal gray paint is not the original, and the coilover springs that were left on it make for too harsh of a ride. But other than that, I love the car. The car picks up and pulls pretty quickly. The turbo takes a sec to spool but once it does, it's a very fast car for a 4cyl. The BOV sounds amazing (equivalent to the sound of air brakes)
Good Car
Great car, great handling, turbo is ok. Could be better on gas mileage, though.
Super fun...10% of the time
I fell in love with this car when I was 11. It looks so good! So I bought one and it is really fun to drive. Not too slow, awesome handling...when it's running. I have owned this for 3 months and drive lightly. It has literally spent more time broken than fixed. All of the engine/cooling components are cheap, not very well put together and need replacing evey 60,000 miles. You basically have to buy a new car at 120,000 miles (which is right when I purchased mine). I have bought mine twice already and it is currently sitting in my driveway waiting for me to flush the cooling system and find out why I'm overheating.
Great Car
Overall, this car is by far my best investment ever. It looks great, and drives fantastic. It provides great performance and decent handeling. The only downside to my car is the gas milage while driving it hard. I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. Upgrading parts on it is fairly cheap, and makes it even better.
No complaints here
I bought the car brand new from the dealer. I can't say I had any major problems with the car other than regulare maintenance. I hit 150K with the orginial engine before I spun a bearing. Overall, I really liked the way the car handled. For a non-turbo model, you get what you pay for.
Loved this car
NO problems that weren't driver inflicted.
Power for a price
In the course of owning this car, I have become a DSM mechanic. It is important to realize that anytime you attempt to push HP levels beyond what the manufacturer intended, you sacrifice reliability. However, I have been more unlucky than most. I was diagnosed with crank walk 1 month after purchase. $3000 later and a few modifications the tranny exploded. Now another motor later, and replacement of most moving parts, and at ~400WHP most of my issues have been resolved. As a commuter car or grocery getter, this is not the ideal car. As a platform to create a very respectable 4 cylinder drag car it is ideal. For that power you pay the price in reliabity.
Have Money?
I bought this car for the simple fact of how beautiful it is. BIG MISTAKE! I bought the car at 145,000 miles, and like every other Eclipse after "Fast & Furious" came out, some kid had it and ran the crud out of it. Its suspension is BAD, its engine is BAD, its fuel system is BAD, and the service / parts are EXPENSIVE if you go to the dealer. Also, if you tell the dealer that the parts you bought aren't lasting as long as their warranty says it should, they actually cuss at you. I was called a LAZY bum when I told them my ball-joints lasted less than two years, (20,000 mi). Do not buy this car unless you have a lot of money to throw around!
fun reliable car
Many people have been telling me horror stories about their experiences with eclipses but I really have nothing bad to say about mine. I bought the car three years ago with 50,000 miles on it and have since put 60,000 on it. I personally drive the car very hard and due to this have had to replace brakes and clutch but that is my fault. otherwise i have had no problems.
A Very Reliable Girl
I absolutely LOVE this car! I bought this car in 1997 when it had 36,000 miles on it. It now has 192,000 and still starts right up even on the coldest of days. Besides routine maintenance, I have never had to dump any money into this girl. Unfortunately, the Northeastern winters have taken their toll on the body, as it now has extensive rust damage on the undercarriage, including a significant hole in the exhaust...but she is STILL going! As I face the inevitable and begin shopping for a newer car, I will grieve the loss of this old friend.
Would buy another - if I could find one!
I bought this Eclipse a little over a year ago and loved it to death. It had 115K on it with 14K on a rebuilt engine and I did not have any problems with it whatsoever. I brought the miles up to 128k and could tell this car had a LOT of life left in it if it wasn't for a truck plowing into it and totaling it! The seats were very comfortable (back seat space is limited, but the seats are so cushy!), very large trunk, sporty but cute exterior design, and good gas mileage (close to 400/tank with mostly highway miles). Only downsides were that U-turns were a little difficult, a somewhat large blind spot on the side, and the shift knob came very close to the CD deck which was annoying.
AWD Turbo Eclipse GSX is a great car
Excellent balance of styling and performance. AWD is nice for cornering, accelleration, and poor weather. Turbo is always nice for 0- 60. These car also have the potential of being quicker than a nice Porsche with a few modifications. Simply a pleasure to drive. I haven't had any problems with the car, except improper throttle adjustment. The the person who owned the car before me decided to play with throttle without knowing what they were doing. Overall, this car is a great buy. I don't recommend the RS and GS models, but the GST and GSX are great cars for the money. The turbo will surprise you.
Love It!!!
I purchased the car when it was 2 yrs. old and had 25K miles. At the time of purchase, I also included the extended maintenance plan, which I highly recommend and which more than paid for itself over the years. My car is a copper color, which is very unusual and definitely gets attention. I had cruise control & power sun roof installed and have loved driving this car ever since. I have had many people tell me that they like this body style much better than the newer one (and I agree). Since the car now had 70K miles, and is paid for, I hope she (yes, she!) will continue to carry me for a few more years.
over 65000
This car is the worst car I ever had. When I purchased it, the car was perfect and when a few month came by my sunroof wouldn't work anymore. Now my car is in the shop til this day. I've had my clutch fixed 3 times in 3 years, my alternator, my a/c is out which will cost me another thousand to get it fixed, and much more. This car has cost me over 5500 (in 3 yrs).
Mitubishi Eclipse GS-T
The Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T model is a very exiting car to drive. Right from the start you feel crisp acceleration that will have you at 60 in a little under 5 seconds. This car has tremendous power out a four cylender all the way through the powerband. With 210 horsepower, it should.
great car/fun to drive
I bought my GST new in 95, have accumulated 124,000 miles on the odometer, with very few problems. I have modified alot under the hood and undercarrage, and still, no real problems to mention. The only major problems I've had, were the driver's side door handle breaking, and, now, the driver's side auto-door lock malfunctioning. I've got to say, it's one heck of a car, especially for the money. It'll take Mustangs and Camaros no problem, and handles like a dream.
It's All About The Turbo
The car is great for someone that needs a little get up and go, without spending an arm and a leg.
car from hell
this car has been nothing but problems from the day i bought it. as soon as i got it home it leaked oil all down my driveway. later to find out the block was cracked, and on the way to the shop my timing belt snapped which bent valves and blew the engine completley. about 2 months later i was driving down the highway and it started to backfire!!!!! how embarassing!!! my trans had gone 3 times and this car has 77,000 and it is an automatic!! the front bumper magically fell off during the night while it was locked inside my garage. if you want to spend alot of money reparing your car this would be the one for you!!!
its been good to me
I bought my eclipse in 3/97. It had 28000 miles on it. Now I have 147000. I never had to do any major work. The car runs good and still looks good.
luv2drive
great driving car. not easy to get in/get out, not the best in fit/finish but outstanding value. truly a "poor man's porsche"
not reliable, but fun
This car is definitely fun to drive at first, but not to long after i bought it, things started going wrong. i don't know how many miles are on it, as the odometer rolls over 1.4 miles for every mile it goes, but i have had to replace the computer, the shocks have gone to crap, and many things on the interior have fallen apart. I also have a highly modified 96 eclipse RS (i did a japanese jdm 4g63t engine swap with many upgraded options including bigger turbo) and it is extremely fast (i have beaten trans ams, lost to z06 vettes) for a 4-cylinder and handles well, but even the japanese engine isn't very reliable.
Big attention getter...
I have had the car for a week and i get nothing but positive responses from people on the street because the car is mildly souped up in/out, specially when people hear the turbo's blow off valve go off(aftermarket). Im 6' 2 & its a lil hassle to get in but once im in i have plenty of leg room. I have pics, just email me at Cristorey34 at hotmail
Review
I've had a great experience with this car so far. No major difficulties at all.
Great Car with Potential
Everybody hears about the reputation these cars have, but people who have experience will tell you different. If the car is taken care of, this car is awesome. It has the tried and true 4G63 which can be made powerful with ease. The '95 model has an EEPROM ECU and no CAS so it will be a positive for modders. Also, since its a '95 and AWD you are exempt from OBDII test and dyno test. This is the best year, just do the conversion and you are set.
great affordable car
I bought this in 1998 and definitely got my moneys worth! It was a base model, but had a spoiler and sunroof and I added a nicer cd system. The car was very reliable for me driving back and forth to school/work and home. I loved the dark green and how it can fit in just about any parking spot! Also got great gas mileage! While trying to avoid an accident my car ended up over an embankment and hit 8 trees- the car was a mess, but completely took the impact. I broke the front and rear axles, both bumbers were gone and every body panel dented and I...bruised my index finger! GREAT crumple zones! I'm buying a '98 eclipse tomorrow!
Bad Choice
I bought this car because of it's looks. I do not recommend to buy as used car. After 80k miles replaced transmission. Sunroof leaks. Now at 100k miles the car sometimes will turn but not start. I have taken it to couple of mechanics and they can't find the problem. I will be paying dealer's repair price to figure this one out.
Fun Car
I have only had it for two weeks, but it's completly stock and runs great and so smooth. I'm loving it! Not sure what I plan on doing with it, but I just hope it doesn't turn out to be like my 1995 Eagle Talon.
Outstanding car
I bought a new GS-T in burnt orange with leather, sun-roof and 5-speed. I thought it was one of the prettiest cars I've ever owned and I got compliments on its looks up til when I traded it in 2001. The only thing that ever went wrong with the car was the outside door handle broke at about 70,000 miles. It was a lot of fun to drive, very fast, stuck like glue in corners and got great gas mileage (25-30).
Too Much Power!
This car has so much power stock, and it drives like a dream. It pulls so hard off the line by the time the turbo kicks in you are already screaming by! The stock T-25 turbo is a little on the small side, but it does spool up fast, minimal turbo lag. The motor can handle more boost as is, and you can add a boost controller for 20 bucks to crank it up.
My Eclips
Skyline Auto, CO, lied to me about the car being all wheel drive. The car has been fun. The front wheel axils brake aroung 135000 miles, but its a recall.
Nothing but headaches!
This has been the worst car I have bought to date. The engine lacks the power (I own a Non-turbo GS with an automatic :( ). In the last three years I have replaced the following: alternator starter main computer ball joints (uppers) tie rod ends struts (front) crankshaft pulley head gasket main and rod bearings Total money spent on these repairs:$3600 Currently the car has 79,000 miles on it, and hope to sell it by the time it hits 80,000!
HUGE MISTAKE
I bought this car in June 2002 with 99,000 miles on it. I have not had my car for 3 months due to waiting on the claims process to replace the cylinder head and camshafts ($2000 repair estimat). The 2nd day I had the car the torque converter went out and had to be replaced. I've had to have all belts replaced and pulleys. The inside door handle fell off once I had the car for about a month, the sunroof won't slide open/closed anymore (that took about 2 months since ownership to break), and the right window is about to break-it takes about 10 minutes to roll down the window. Other than that, what a great car!
Love
I love this car, no problems. All wheel drive and a turbo, that accelerates like nothing. Add an air intake and an exhaust system, and your car is now better than all others.

Best I've Ever Owned
This car has a very bad rap or I just lucked out. Bought w/ 43K, it just turned 80K; mechanically it has been a dream. Turbo needs frequent oil changes (2K to 2.5K per). Tune @ 60Kmi. was expensive. Ball joints recalled as a freebie. Body parts a bit shoddy; all still works but things like the cruise control button don't always work on the first press -- finally does and it's ok for a day. Moisture problems??? A/C, heat are great. Tiny things go wrong. Engine/drive train fab. Turbo gives a kick that current models don't have. On the road it is rock solid. Up to this mileage, the Eclipse is the only trouble-free and reliable car I've ever owned.
This is a one of a kind great car
This car has only been wrecked one time. The damage was only the paint which was a forest green and the front bumper. THe insurance paid for all new parts and a new paint job which is silver now. Not even a month after I bought it the clutch went out, but it was replaced. It looks better now than it did when I bought it. It is also more reliable. I thas never broke down in over a year which is the time I've had it.
Best in Quality
This car really holds its value. I bought used and its almost in showroom quality. I love this car. Its pretty good in pickup too. I don't race it though, mine is an automatic. But these cars are really good deals, especially for less than $5000.
Best car ever!
I have had this car for about a year and it is the best car I have ever owned stock. The eclipse is a great car, but the best thing is that it is a super car on the track or anywhere. Best car ever! Really. No problems with it ever.!
1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS-T
This model is most wanted model, but the engine, tranny, and car in general were just the worst. At first this car ran great, got decent fuel economy, good shifts, and a beautiful BOV sound from the turbo. Then came an easy winter and this car fell apart on me. :( I took very good care of it. Religious oil changes, new coolant, tranny fluid, filters the regular stuff. I even bought an Apexi N1 exhaust for this car. Made it sound so sweet. The car went through highways mostly and one day the check engine light appeared. Oxygen sensor was my thinking ona 125k car. Changed them and it went away. Day later the alternator and suspension itself broke. Not even TLC will keep this car alive.
ummm..
this car is awsome
best bang for the buck
I bought my gs-t in early 2004 with 94k on the clock. I added a 16g turbo, ported manifolds, 3" down pipe and exhaust (no cat) 550cc injectors, apexi fuel control and boost control. When properly tuned this car would pull away from ZO6 Corvettes from a roll. I loved this car, it has been my 3rd DSM so far and the fastest. All I ever put into it was regular maintenance. The motor never failed to start up, even on cold mornings, and ran smooth alsways despite being raced at the track and on the street. I always had boost set at 17psi and the car never complained!!
