Have this car for over 2 yrs. Bought it with 20k now has 50k. It's fully loaded V6 standard. Only one problem so far(replaced control arm). Reliability exceeded my expectations. Love the car and its performance and handling. Can't find better used V6 4 dr sedan with stick shift for the money (Audi, BMW or VW cost at least twice as much). Downside, dashboard fake wood is too cheap, worn leather on the steering wheel, fake handbrake boot leather and the way the engine stalls at revs when shifting. Interesting enough, in Europe Ford Mondeo(same as Contour/Mystique) was always rated way ahead of Accords and Camrys in any way.

I purchased my mystique with 17000 mi. it nows has 42000 mi. i like the handling and the smoothness of the engine. the seats are comfortable. THE WORST THING ABOUT OWNING THE CAR IS HAVING TO TAKE IT TO A FORD OR MERCURY DEALERSHIP. I HAD SPRING GUARDS INSTALLED ON THE FRONT STRUT (AS PART OF A RECALL) AND HAD TO RETURN TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE THEY MADE A LOUD NOISE WHEN I DROVE OVER SPEED BUMPS. IT TOOK 8 VISIT AND THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS TO FINALLY FIX THE A/C WATER LEAK I HAD INSIDE THE CAR.

The car has nice amenities, but has been troublesome. It's been in the shop more times than most other cars I've owned. Though not a big car, it's not easy to park especially in reverse.

I bought the car with 15,000 miles on it 3.5 years ago and today it is junk. It was a constant nightmare. The timing belt, sensors, struts, spoiler, overhead interior lights, broken power windows, and numerous other electrical problems ended up costing a fortune in repairs. Last week cracked gaskets enabled antifreeze to leak into the oil, which totally destroyed the engine. For a car with slightly less than 90,000 miles on it (that has been regularly serviced throughout the years), it ended up being a major disaster. PLEASE think twice if you are considering the "Mistake" as my friends have come to call it.

Purchased my 98 Mystique GS two years ago for 1,800, with 86K on it. Since then, must have put 3K worth of repairs into it. The interior lights would fall down when driving. Headlights were awfully dim, replaced them and made a slight difference, but with the fogginess of the plastic what do you expect? Brakes were replaced and still were .. clunky when stopping. Next was the transmission! Oh boy, that went at 100K, got it replaced for the amount I paid for the car. About 2 months ago, it started an awful rattling noise when starting up the car, and when the A/C was on. Took it to my mechanic thinking it was the compressor, turns out it was the engine. Im sure theres more, but never AGAIN!
