2013 GL 450 Perfection
After months of research into the true SUV and Luxury class of truck based, non-crossover vehicles, the GL450 consistently rated high among the likes of the Audi Q7, Escalade, Land Cruiser, Range Rover and Lexus 570. Because of the company it kept regarding comparable SUV's in the Luxury Class, I selected the Mercedes Benz GL450 as the used vehicle to buy. I have no single regret. This machine is as advertised in terms of its power, handling, comfort and high quality assembly of interior and exterior materials and design. I immediately took my "new" used Mercedes on a 3,000 mile road trip. The performance and reliability were flawless as the comfort and handling were as good as I have ever had. Ok, the highest quality SUV I've owned is a 2011 Nissan Murano so one could say "what does he know"? Right your are but because I've been driving since early 1960, I know what I like, know what is fake and the true meaning of quality, or "high" quality. This 2013 hit all the marks and I am impressed with its Sherman Tank domination of the road with more than adequate comfort and non-fatigue long haul driving experience. Love how the cruise control operates and can shift up/down in 1 MPH or 5 MPH increments. The immediate power available in the twin-turbo V8 is extremely satisfying. Gas mileage is not an area I gave too much concern to because of the weight and size of the GL450, it's not great for sure but it isn't as poor as many of the comparable vehicles mentioned above, so in that category I say the GL450 is decent. If I could have found one with all zone climate control and Panoramic Sunroof, those would be icing on the cake. I found one painted in Iridium Silver, performance Package 2 and with all the standard features this beauty is still amazing and priced mid $40,000 with 31,000 miles returned from lease. Best deal and best true SUV I've had ever. Highly, highly recommended.

Fun to Drive, lots of improvements
I was looking for a replacement for my 2011 GL450, and was getting tired of the poor user interface of the controls, hard to enter address on the navigation using the arrow keys, etc. The 2014 GL450 is exciting to drive. It is peppy, the controls are well laid out and the steering is light and responsive. The turn radius is tight, and a roomy interior. There have been a lot of small and steady improvements (see my list of favorite features below). It still feels solid (I had been hit by another car at 50mph on the driver side door in the previous GL and the solid door held up and protected me well). The technology and electronics has been updated also. Overall, a fun car to drive.

Tall guy, first Merecedes (GL 450)
Wow. This is a whole different vehicle. I'm 6'4" (with somewhat longer torso), and I have chronic back and knee pain. I didn't get the upgraded multi-contoured seats, but the seats with the Premium Pkg are just fine. I just sit, adjust the height and tilt, adjust the lumbar, and FORGET MY BACK! (I.e., no pain) The stock side bolsters are also a blessing. Street bumps and uneven camber are virtually eliminated (again, happy back). The steering is buttery, with good turning radius for size of vehicle. Acceleration on this trim level is more than adequate, as it made my heart skip on the first drive. Higher trims could get downright scary. The BMWs: too cramped. Tried a 2011 LR4: too much body lean and no side-bolstering. The Touareg and Cayenne require lowering seat in favor of headroom...tilting pelvis and putting pressure on lower back. Buy used; let someone else pay the depreciation.

First non diesel since '95
Rock solid SUV! It's the first vehicle my wife may admit is better than her audi Q7 tdi. The designo interior is amazing. I thought the radar guided cruise would be a joke, but I love it. With direct fuel injection and two turbos, my diesel days may well be over. 510pound-feet of torque wait at LOW rpm to effortlessly pull any load.
Big, But Refined
Ordered the 450 in February and took delivery in April, convenience 2 and heavily optioned but skipped the off-road stuff, automatic cruise, panoramic roof, and lane-assist. Would have ordered the diesel but dealers steered me clear given biodiesel content in Illinois - no complaints with the V-8; sounds great. This is not, however, a car that cries to be driven fast - big (which is why I bought it), heavy vehicle. Awesome for interstate cruising or tooling around town. Very quiet; smooth ride, although I hate the numb electronic steering. Great styling inside and out. Command system works fine for me, extremely comfortable, lots of convenience features. As good as advertised.
Love this beast
Owned the car for a few years, put 64k miles, no problems, only regular maintenance which actually doesn’t cost that much. Oil change with filter only 130$ at the dealer, I think very reasonable, in comparison I paid 400$ for oil change for my cayenne so I’m pretty happy with reliability and cost of ownership. Resale value of course not great but it’s a good thing for people who buy this vehicle used. Great fit and finish of all the interior components. Headlight performance is not best but I updated the bulbs and it definitely made an improvement. Great acceleration and handling despite the size and weight of the vehicle. Would recommend it to anyone! Love mine

The S class of SUV's
Just took delivery of my wife's GL 450 and I am blown away by how quiet, solid and comforting this vehicle is. It really rivals the S class. When I test drove a lesser equipped vehicle I liked how well the vehicle performed. I loaded this vehicle out and I am not sure why but the vehicle is even nicer than I remember. Acceleration is adequate, braking is superb and the ride is awesome. Looked at all the competing models but kept coming back to Mercedes. The price does escalate as you add options as it does with others. If you are in the market for an SUV you owe it to yourself to at least give the GL some consideration.
An amazing value when purchase used!
Update: In the last twelve months this vehicle has needed $18K in various repairs, most of which had to be performed by M-B due to proprietary parts. Very glad I bought an extended warranty through USAA. Much as we've enjoyed it, I can no longer recommend it due to the enormous maintenance/repair expense. I bought a 2014 GL 550 w/ 40K miles in 2017 for $55K (original MSRP $95K in 2014 -- sharp depreciation!). Had been part of MB's certified vehicle offering. What a spectacular vehicle for the money! This big MB is so fast, and handles so incredibly well that I find Texas's top, 80-mph speed limit to be frustratingly low. Although intended for the US market, this twin-turbo V8 with wide, performance tires would be more at home at much higher speeds on Germany's autobahns. The brakes are every bit as impressive as the engine. In addition to almost preternatural performance for such a big vehicle, the interior comforts are also great, starting with the Harmon Kardon stereo, but also the massaging, heated & cooled seats, and triple sunroof. I'm not a fan of the cumbersome navigation system, however, and children over twelve are uncomfortable in the third-row seats. Finally, the MB dealer here in San Antonio has been delightful to deal with for routine maintenance.

Mercedes 2014 Gl 450 -- it died a short death!
At 75,000 miles it died. 2 cylinders went bad. Mercedes wanted $30,000 to fix it. I proposed a 20% discount on a new one and Mercedes said "NO". No more Mercedes for me -- no value the $80,000 that In originally spent. I replaced it with a Lincoln Aviator.

2014 mercedes gl 450
If you are looking for a lemon or a garbage buy one . I own a 2014 . Within 3 years I spend $26000 to keep it runnin until the engine die completely and the dealer ask me $33000 to put a new engine on it. All kind of problems from new cylinder head , camshaft, valve, water pump, radiator, coil, heater core, air shocks, cooling hose, when I thought I was finish the engine die. I come to find out all of them give the same problem. Soon or later you will need a new engine. Be aware ask any shop that fix those trucks. Any salvage yard wants $12000 for a used engine. Do your homework before you buy any of those lemon truck. 2013 to 2017 and good luck if you own one.

2014 GL-450 62,000 miles and Blown Motor
It looks like my expectation for Mercedes quality and first in Class engineering was misguided. My babied 2014 GL-450 with 62,000 miles blows out the #1 piston. The lack of empathy was evident when the quote was given "$40,000 for the motor, $10,000 for the install, what would you like to do". When I said I would not and could not afford to pay for that he gave me 2 days to "get my car out of here". WOW!!! I'm pretty speechless. Now I own a beautiful 6,000 pound paperweight with a Mercedes emblem on the grill. Looks like need to buy a bigger desk.
You will think this is SUV is awesome if you haven't driven a lexus ever...
I own 2014 GL550 for more than a year now. At best, this is an OK SUV. This is my second and last GL. MB does not have the reliability, built quality or attention to detail to warrant the price tag and more than $10k premium over other SUVs. GL is annoyingly unreliable. Keyfob stops working when it gets cold. You can get stranded outside your car in a cold night if your keyfob happens to get cold for whatever reason. Disctronic plus and Presafe features stop working in the middle of driving when it's rainy or snowy outside, when you need them most. I reported to MB customer service and dealership to no await. Other owners seem to have similar annoying problems they get used to. Why pay 100k?
2013 Mercedes GL450 -- Hidden Gem in Big SUV's
We purchased a low-mile CPO vehicle from Ft. Lauderdale Mercedes. The GL450 is a real deal compared to competing vehicles such as Lexus LX and GM Suburbans. Much nicer, better ride and more comfortable.

Dont buy the GL2013 onwards especially bluetec
Are you kidding me? I was ripped off completely especially when the ad blue system failed, I was quoted 11,000 plus tax to replace the system, later it was another issue it knot sensor. I would never recommend this car for anyone. Although thanks to Mercedes they gave me one time 75% discount but still my heart is broken. Maintainance cost is alarming and not reliable car. I am heart broken cause issues arising seem non stop. Fault is frequent

Bought new. Great vehicle!
The GL was a new model when we bought it new. We maxed out the options and glad that we did. The cameras, Dystronic, etc. are great and provide excellent safety. We're spoiled. Update in 2020: We still use the GL daily with approx 95,000 miles on it. It's my wifes car and she loves it. Can't get her to consider a new one!

BEWARE: I Loved Her...but She burned me
I bought my GL450 used—she was a peach. I did my research and test drove all the lux SUVs that would tow my airstream. Once I drove the GL450, I was sold. Great power, smooth ride, comfortable for a family of 4 -5 to take cross-country road trips or a camping trip to the mountains. She was great going up and down the mountains and maneuvered fantastic with our airstream around curves or on the Interstate. BUT...I knew going in that she would cost me a pretty penny if/when she was in the shop, so I bought the best warranty I could find. Glad I did! I had Her for a year and for four of those months, she was in for repairs to the EVAP system—Heat not working, Engine light on, EVAP pressure problems, Heat Core problems, Air Coolant Hose replaced...over $16K. Mercedes Service wasn't much help. Ready for it? Her engine caught fire while I was in line to pick up my kids at school. I WATCHED HER BURN. The investigator could not find any conclusive evidence of the cause, but he suggested it was connected to the EVAP system. So glad I wasn't on the road at the time. I LOVED everything about this car. But if you are researching a used one and see a carfax report that the EVAP, Heating, Cooling, or Exhaust system has been checked around 100K-BEWARE! It's going to cost you! Once one thing goes anywhere along the system, it stresses everything else down the line and you will live at the repair shop. BE CAREFUL.

2013 GL550
At the end of October 2012 we traded in my wife's 2008 Mercedes 4matic (station wagon) for a new Mercedes 2013 GL550. We love the exterior design of the car and the flexibility on the interior design with the third row seats. The acceleration of the car is incredible-no problem merging onto the freeway or passing. Gas mileage is not the cars strong suit but I did not expect it to be. Now the bad, at 4000 miles the car needs new front rotors which are not yet a stocking item at my dealership-10 day wait! A In addition both side view mirrors are defective-drivers side is frosted and the passenger's side has two stripped bolts off its backing plate.

love my GL450 2013
Very good car, got it used certified few years ago with 17K miles, tires lasted 30k miles, replaced them with Michelin and the ride is much better, now with 66 K miles old only brakes oil and tires were needed, love the ride, the only complain is the paint on the steering wheel is peeling off, I got one from ebay and is brand new.. good quality SUV, dealer service here in Florida. My 2008 GL320 diesel came out to be a nightmare after 100K miles, but also was a good car. paint is excellent. good suspension. had an issue with my engine light after the 60K miles service, took few days but was covered under the CPO extended, driver side lower seat cover, some crack on the vinyl, had to have it replaced, was also covered by my service adviser under warranty. Not an economical car to own without extender dealer warranty and prepaid maintenance.

Steer Away From This Lemon
I just sold my 2013 GL 550 after 10 years and 102,000 miles. I had purchased it new. The good news is that it drives like a dream on the highway. I've made many long trips and it's as steady as a train on rails. It's powerful, has a smooth ride, and corners very well for a large car. I also really like the way it looks. The 2013 model was a new version and I ordered it without driving it first. After it arrived, I brought it in for service saying these was something wrong with the throttle response because there was too much lag between pressing the pedal and getting movement from the car. They said it was operating normally. I learned to live with it, but God help you if you need to dodge across traffic from a standstill. Nothing happens for the first second or so while the turbo wakes up. My wife's non-turbo ML is much more responsive off the line, though the GL can make up for lost time after it gets motivated. Mechanically, mine was a lemon even though I drove it responsibly. I had suspension work done three times, which is VERY expensive. Two of those times the suspension collapsed and I had to limp it to the dealer like a buck wagon. The transfer case also failed, which should never happen. The dealer was apologetic, but didn’t offer any discount other than finding a cheaper used one ($3,400) because surely IT wouldn’t fail. I had a variety of other failures including a turbo coolant leak, failed fuel injector, failed A/C compressor, leaky A/C core, failed emission bank that caused a rough idle, and failed back seat control. The car also got 15-16 mpg ON THE HIGHWAY and only about 12 in the city. It also wore through the Continental tires every 20,000 miles. My replacement car is not a Mercedes and I do not plan to ever own another Mercedes. Based on my experience, I’d say make sure you can afford a lot of maintenance costs before you buy this car.

First time Mercedes Buyer
This was my first Mercedes Benz product I’ve ever purchased. I bought it in December 2013 and have been pleased with it all through my ownership experience. I sold it last year and purchased a neW 2022 Mercedes GLS. It rode so comfortably on all roads even gravel, in fact you could barely hear the gravel noise inside the cabin. I always serviced my GL at Mercedes Benz of Buckhead which is also where we bought it. They go above and beyond to take care of their customers. Overall I think it was well worth the price tag as I’ve had 0 issues of any kind and it had 155,000 miles when I sold it. Very reliable ride in my ownership experience! Maintenance costs aren’t that bad either. Very comparable to our Lexus’ we’ve had over the years. This was my first and certainly not my last!

Great car, ... when it worked
2014 GL 350 was a great suv when it worked, could not find a better SUV, previously had a 2008 GL320, but met up with a deer and totaled the car. Barely noticed any impact and all occupants were safe. The 2014 GL cost $46 K in repairs (under MB extended warranty) in 6 years. Once covid hit in 2020 we drove less, but still had numerous visits to the service dept. diesel emissions, soot sensors, DEF heating tank, airmatic suspension, and proximity sensors were the main issue. The oil level in the engine was always over full, a complaint I made to the dealer since 2018. He said it occurs because they do not drain the oil pan , rather suck the oil out thru the dipstick. Then fill it with the amount of oil suggested. Later I discovered through an independent that the over fill was diesel fuel seeping into the oil pan. In the last few months, 4 hours of driving would add 1 liter of diesel fuel to the oil pan. Had to trade the car. Lost faith in the dealership service dept and purchased an X7.

Cheema
Very poor material used; things started falling apart in the first week. Brakes were squeaking right away.I took it to dealership 7 times in first 4 months. Moldings were falling apart, and rear door molding started breaking apart in th first three months. The lever of the rear folding seat broke in first few weeks. Having driven a Land Cruiser and Lexus LX470, the quality of this car was nowhere near that of those cars. Bought in Sept 2012 and sold after having driven for 14,000 miles in 2014

Dreams do come True *
This is an amazing machine the pick up and go and the style is the best I've seen. I wish the gas milage was better, but other than that is my only complaint and I wanted Safety, comfort and Style, over a few extra bucks in the tank. I drive all day, and I really need everything comfortable and stylish so i'm happy on the road moving out and about in style. Lane assist, and blind spot assist , dis tronic, amazing features, not to mention M brace -a must have, oh, and a Bang and Olsen sound system to die for. Designo interior AMAZING. Its truly a Dream come true and really there is soooo much more I did'nt even get to touch on. Test drive it, far better than the Lexus SUV. Tires every two years- low profile tires- still love it-

GL450 Electronics problems continue!!!!
I have experienced seemingly unending electronic failure issues with only 5,000 miles on vehicle: Failure to go into sleep mode causing dead battery;towed to dealer 200 mi. away, MB refused to return to my location; When vehicle is locked, one door, although locked, causes alarm and will open if handle is touched, even if EasyGo key is not present; Adaptive High Beam headlight failure; Rear tailgate opens with driver door occasionally; When spraying the car with water, while washing, doors lock and unlock continually if you have key in pocket; circuit board replaced, issue continues- another appt. made Where is the quality control?
Still the Best!
This truck is wonderfully understated. It is safe, powerful, fast & luxurious. It handles amazingly well for a 5k lb. SUV. Our 2013 model has been absolutely problem free with no repairs other that routine maintenance. Fit & finishes are excellent and we just love our MB 450 GL.

2014 GL 350 Mercedes Benz Blue tech Diesel
Best SUV! I absolutely loved driving this model. Only issue after 10 years of driving was the Def - emissions system. Fortunately replacement of the field measure was 100% covered by Mercedes Benz. Still looks and drives great after 194K
Waited nine month and it's been worth it
I'm a bit of a car freak and after carefully considering the options (Q7, X5, Lexus) decided to wait for the newly designed Benz. Wow, it took a long time, at least partially due to the options we elected. We picked up the car on Tuesday and it is beautiful. We did Arctic White with the special order Black dash/ carpet/headliner with Almond seats and door accents. We also ordered matte wood. It drives like a dream, is very comfortable and has outstanding build quality. We love it and I really believe this one will keep us happy for the decade we plan to keep it.
