A Gentleman Never Tells, but this Car is a Beast

2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E55 AMG Rwd 4dr Sedan (5.4L 8cyl 5A)

I have owned a 2002 E55 for 6 years and I absolutely love it. Sure it's an older car in 2018, but the thing can move! The naturally aspirated 5.4L V8 roars to life when you turn the key and is reduced to a low rumble once the engine warms up. It holds a corner with ease and fires off the line like a rocket when asked. Steering is tight around town and the cabin is quiet when driving in the city or on the highway. I'm 6'3" and I am very comfortable in the front or back of the car, and there is plenty of room in the truck for luggage and golf clubs. This car is an incredible bargain on the market today even compared to newer cars. Yes, you will have maintenance expenses but I do not think you can find a better value on the market. This car is a perfect blend of class, performance, and style. I could not be happier, and If you want to enjoy your time in the car then you need to find one.

2002 Mercedes E 320 w/Elegance Package

My first ever Mercedes. I am more than pleased with the car. I would caution buyers who are looking at buying a higher mileage car to take the car in for a transmission oil and filter change. Mercedes says it isn't needed, but mine did. Be sure to only use Mercedes-Benz transmission fluid. Older Mercedes cars are good cars for do-it-yourselfers who are willing to do the research to learn how to work on them. Internet makes this easy. Dealership service is expensive, but seldom needed. This is the best engineered car I've ever driven or owned. The fit and finish is perfect. I was astonished that such an aparently heavy car gets such good gas mileage (22 city / 29 hwy).

2002 Mercedes Benz E430

I bought this car in 1/03 with 8000 Miles 17 years ago for $38,000 the original MSRP was $53,000. Today I have 287,500 Miles on it and runs brand new I have maintained it since the day I bought it. The ride is exceptionally smooth and easy to drive no issues mechanically or electronically at all, the maintenance is the Oil Chang every 7000 Mile using Mobil 1 10/40 or 15/50 Full Synthetic with the Lucas Additive. I had 1 Transmission Fluid Change in 2010 and since then nothing and still runs perfect times like a clock. Mercedes says since it's a Sealed Transmission that it never has to be done for life now with the miles I have I'm going to ride it out this is the longest I've ever kept a car with this many miles and I'm totally impressed. It has 295HP @ 5700 RPM and picks up with a smooth power quickly and stops on a dime the ABS System is very good. AC is still Cold every 2 years I have a Recharge to keep it running cool, I've had the Rear Window Regulator repaired 1 and the Left Headlight Bulb goes out often but it's a easy replacement. I had the top speed to 152 MPH onetime to see how fast it can go and when slowed down to 65 MPH it felt like I was crawling. This is one of the best dependable cars I've ever had I detail it every week and looks like I just bought yesterday, E430 is an exceptional car and worth to keep for another 20 years. One thing is when you try to Appraise it or Book it out the value to a potential buyer would be about $1500 at best and that just doesn't make sense but those are the facts even though I paid $37,000 doesn't matter. However when I'm putting gas or im parked I'll have people come and complement the condition on how good it looks and shocked to know it 17 years old with 287,000 they cant believe it. I would even want to sell it and go through the BS Haggle knowing what this car is worth being so dependable and in great condition one day I'll just give it away and hope someone takes care of like I have.

I bought a 02 E 430 SPt SEDAN NEW. I have no problem in over 10 years. Only minor repairs. The vehicle performance magnificent, strong unbelievable aggressive acceleration and amazing handling , with the MECHANICALLY RELIABLE POWERFULL 4.3L V 8 engine AS APPRX. 160,000 MILES I want to keep this car for a while longer. I AM EXPERIENCING ONE RECENT PROBLEM, I JUST PUT A NEW A/C SYSTEM IN THE VEHICLE, BUT AROUND APPROX. 1000-1200 RPM I GET A DRAGGING PANORAMIC SOUND THAT GO AWAY OVER 1200 RPM. WHEN THE A/C SYSTEM IS ON ONLY. WE REPLACED THE UNIT BUT THE NOISE IS STILL THERE. THE LOCAL M-BENZ DEALERSHIP NEVER EXPERIENCE NOTHING LIKE THIS. I still have the noise and need help.

I love this car. If you find one in good condition, with low mileage. Purchase and you will understand. At least test drive it! 0-60 in 4.9 and plenty of room for the kids and groceries. High forged pistons and AMG engine quality. Much better then Mercedes Benz alone. Buy a car with 100k miles, and your buying an AMG motor that will last almost twice as long. Unbelievable gas mileage, computer states exactly 24mpg on the highway at 75mph!!! An aggressive yet subtle styling. Very wide 275/45 rear tires. Even the elderly notice these! Took it to the dealer once after it was cleaned up, and was very very happy to see a few sales people line up to the window to look at my then 6year old car

I hate mini-vans! Give me a car or a truck. A MV is neither. Anyway, it was time to replace the wife's van and she wanted a new one. "How about an SUV?" I said. "NO WAY" came the reply. The not so obvious but perfect answer was an E320 4-Matic Wagon. Room for the "Soccer Mom" chores, AWD for the snow, and handling that makes you forget it's a wagon! 23+ MPG at speed, try that in an SUV. Just go buy one!

Having always wanted a Mercedes. I finally poneyed up the money and purchased a used 320 with only 37K miles on it. Since then I have been on a first name basis with my service advisor as I am bringing the car back to the shop almost every other month for different problems. Here is what has broken so far. Interior visors, both left and right due to the mirror covers hinge breaking (not covered under extended warranty) Catalytic converter at 70K. Ball Joints at 78K. Windshield washer resevoir (not covered $230). Instrument lighting. Entire radio. Voltage regulator. Most of this would not have been covered if I hadn't purchased the extended warranty. Too much for me. Back to Lexus

Incredible power (350 ho, 400 torque) fantastic handling, hard to believe it is a four door sedan. Also have an 02 E430 and this outperforms in every way. I'm getting 22 MPG on the highway at 70 - 80 MPH average, better than my 6 cylinder 95 legend (which is also a great car). Most amazing thing is unlimited power along the entire power curve, no lag anywhere. Handling is fantastic, maintains a flat stance in any curve and super quick response.

First and only owner of my E55 AMG 2002. Very glad I bought it after my lease ended. I've leased other AMGs since (including the powerful 2014 E63s AMG), but I've never bought any of them when the lease expired. They were either too uncomfortable, too unreliable, or too expensive to keep. But not the W210 AMG E55. After 140K miles, nothing has broken down. The engine runs great, the transmission shifts smoothly, the suspension all original, the brakes works great (but does squeeks a little). With a little TLC, this car will run forever. Some friends who have sold their old 99-02 E55 have regretted selling theirs.

Good Car - Could Use Some Improvements

Had car for just under 2 years and 27000 miles. Love power/acceleration and AWD system (with Blizzak snow tires, car will go anywhere in any weather). No mechanical problems to date. Car is relatively anoymous and yet it commands a certain respect. Need improvement: 1. Front seats - in order to get lumbar support, had to order a special seat; worst driver's seat that I have ever experienced (and have had cars from many manufacturers including, Jaguar, Nissan, Saab, Mitubishi, VW) 2. Not having a separate dash insert to play a CD is ridiculous in a car costing this much

Driving this automobile has been an absolute joy. It hasn't always been smooth sailing. Have had to replace a motor mount and alternator; booth covered under warranty. Other than that it's been very reliable and has allowed me many enjoyable miles to reflect on what this car is really about. It does everything well. Sure a BMW 5-series will out handle this car but as a whole this rolling rocket is pure solid power wrapped in a much more elegant package. While driving you can feel as though the engineers have spent many sleepless nights designing this car; sweating every detail. Overengineered and it shows. Passion for their craft has inspired me. I Will have this car a very long time.

I've been looking at some of the new 08 E350 wagons offered from Mercedes and although they're beautiful, my 02 E320 wagon still looks nearly as sleek and stylish, so I may hang on to it for a little longer. the car has almost 100k miles on it and it still runs like it did brand new! (always used synthetic motor oil and premium gasoline) I just put new Continetal tires on it along w/ a wheel alignment and the car doesnt vibrate at all even when cruising in excess of 80 mph. This car still gets 24.5 mpg on the highway! It has plenty of cargo room and AWD for the snow making it perfect for ski trips up to the mountains. while its not sexy, you gotta admit its stylish for a family car.

The exterior is a work of art. Although the 2003 is redesigned, I still think my model looks great due to Merc's styling concept. The interior is conservative and sufficiently comfortable, which is what I expect for such an automobile, but I find every gadget useful and logically in place. However, the cupholders could be better. The ride and acceleration is smooth and quick, and the handling is good for such a heavy and relatively heavy car. Although the Lexus LS430 may be less expensive, it doesn't seem to have a unique character. The styling appears to mimic that of the E- series. In addition, it looks bland.

What a great car. My first E-class, an E430, was totaled, and the same dealership got me into an E320 4Matic. Excellent ride; a joy to do some DIY work to, easy to work on and find OEM parts online, and a great community of owners at various sites, including benzworld dot org. I've had Lexus and I just can't get over how much better the German ride is and how well Mercedes makes their vehicles. A completely different driving experience than even BMW and Audi, both brands I love as well. But for now, given the quality, fit and finish of these vehicles, I'm glad to see Benz took a step in the right direction with the W212 chassis (2010- up) and I'll be buying a used W212 wagon next!

It is a well engineered vehicle. The 2002 E320 has all of the improvements since 1996 without the glitches from 2003 and newer models. The brakes and throttle are soft and the suspension are made for a comfort ride. The body frame is solid and has no significant vibration until 100 mph. No major problems with my E320 so far. Unless you consider adding windshield fluid is a major problem.

I bought this for my wife. The grandkids were coming home, and I wanted more security than the 04 Outback wagon. So, one day were cruising the lots in Fairbanks, AK. and find this sweet E320 4matic. So, we test drive and she is really liking the car, but is reserved. It is way more car than we have ever owned before. Now, I do own an 83 240D, and love it, 4spd 28 miles to the gallon on its second engine...but a 2002? Well I go to work, I drive the Dalton Hiway ...the haul road. When I get home 2 days later, the wife has had a change of heart...she had it all arranged. She loves the car. I've added a few things, 18" chromes, stainless window trim, and wash it every weekend. Love the silver!

First off, I call myself "upgrading" from a 1998 Lexus GS300, but soon found out that I actually "downgraded" myself in this German problem. The air conditioner failed 2 times - one time it failed as soon as I picked the car up from being serviced. The brakes are an ongoing problem - they don't last more than 3 months and the brake dust that accumulates on my wheels (in the course of 1 day after cleaning them) is completely out of control. The fit and finish with the car is horrible: the interior door handle is peeling on both doors, bulbs constantly go out, the dashboard illumination is failing (which means no clock), etc. My advice, get a Lexus - when my lease expires, I certainly will!

great exterior design, extremely eye catching. people stood around my car and kept looking while i was not near the vehicle. very quiet and comfortable ride. i traded my Lexus for this. i never received any attention from the public with the Lexus. however, with this MB, young women came up to me and complimented how nice the vehicle is. in some of these occasions. on another occasion, a highway patrol (a lady) stopped me for speeding but instead of sending me a warning, she complimented the vehicle and told me the road was slippery and requested that i drive safe. this is some experience i never had. no wonder, they said driving is an experience.

Although I bought my E320 8 months ago, I do drive it pretty hard, and I drive it often. Even at 54k miles, the car shifts quieter than my 2004 Grand Cherokee and my wifes 2005 Chrysler Pacifica. The city mpg for me is 17 city. The pick-up is fantastic while the handling is great! The interior is simple, but functional. My wife doesn't quite like the seats (she says that they are uncomfortable). The dash cluster is much friendlier than the 2003 BMW 5 series. My mother has a 525 and the steering wheel blocks the dash. I cannot see how fast I am going. Even though I move the steering wheel, the dash cluster is still blocked. I am glad I bought the E320. I favor it over the BMW.

Love the automobile. Tire wear has been good. I just recently replaced them. This is the best experience I have had with any automobile in this area. My first experience with a lexury automoble. Bad experience with light bulbs- I have never owned an automobile that burned out so many, Merecedes replaced all of them under warrenty except the last two. They were marker lights and were easy to replace.Total cost for both was $2.25. Experience with the dealership has been great except that a mechanic missed a bad tire once. Cupholder in front is not the greatest.

I bought this car with 90k miles and have driven it to 140k with only minor issues (headlight and window motor). The car will smoke about anything on the road and looks classy while doing so. I can get 25 MPG on the hwy, haul 4 adults and their stuff, and still toast all the Mustangs and the older Vettes. Routine maintenance is expensive - but tolerable. I am pretty sure this car will be remembered as a classic MB.

I bought the first edition E430 4 yrs ago. I have nothing but trouble. It seem like I have to take the car in for repair almost every month. Every single light bulbs in the car has been change at least once. Fan belt broke on my way to airport. I wish I bought a Luxus. I will never buy another Mercedes again.

Rock solid car. Own a 1999 ML 320 also - what a difference. The M Class was in the shop every other month. This car has never been back yet. Ride, fuel economy, handling, are superb. 4Matic is worth the cost, even for a southern climate. Grips the road in rain or snow. Last year produced in this Model Series - W-210, hence many previous issues resolved (would not recommend any first or second year MB model). Glad I purchased this E-class- safe, superb, sleek - will keep it for years.

I must say after buying an E430 for the wife, I started saving for the E55. I was very impressed with the E430, but as an owner of a Ford 99 Cobra, I liked the speed and missed the ability to take a Vette at the light. I will never forget the day I bought my E55 (September 11, 2001) as it almost didn't happen. I cannot tell you how many thumbs up's I get from Vette Drivers at 120MPH! Everyone is VERY surprised thinking it is just a sedan!

It took a long time to finally get the MB I always wanted, and I'm not disappointed. We're going to keep this car a long, long time.

First car I've ever owned with zero defects. Also my first automatic. Alittle clunky out of first gear when cold. Very powerful engine and unexpectedly great fuel economy. About 16 mpg in downtown Washington DC and a solid 30 mpg on the open road. Bose sound system is fantastic. Fit and finish are impeccable. Wish they sold a turbodiesel.

Overall, the car is fun to drive and very comfortable. Performance is good and interior design is not bad. The front is very attractive but the rear I don't like as much. Looks too much like a box from behind.

Love the E320! Loved the design of 2002 vs more recent models, classic vs a more cloned look. Ride is great, acceleration is awesome with a smooth transmission even after 5 years! Fit and finish is in wonderful condition even after 5 years. Was unsure if purchase of a used vehicle was a smart move but with 1 year of ownership under my belt, very happy I made the choice. Seat warmers are weak, front interior lights are too bright- like looking into the sun.

I bought this car without extensively test driving it. Campared the specs, similar to 99 lexus GS I owned. Very Sadly disappointed. All cars are not created equal. Miss the silky ride with the superb precision ride of the lexus. People think I am crazy if I tell them Lexus is a better ride. Every once in a while I forget I am in the benz when I try talking a turn at high speed. Also hard to keep this car within the lane. In my lexus I could drive with my hands of and felt the car to be an extension of me.

I love this car!!! However, there are a couple of cheap points, the plastic driver's vanity mirror has broken twice, the cup holder has broken 3 times, and my catalytic converter 2 times. The material bottom of the door would be better like my 190e as plastic, the material gets too dirty. Service seems to send it out with problems it didn't previusly have.

One design defect, the carbon cannister emission control makes loud clicking noise when vehicle at idle, dealer says a fix could come out in the future. For idle noise should have bought a Chevy!

This is my first Mercedes. I am not disappointed! The car looks great, drives great and is built great. I test drove them all, the 5-series, GS300, A6 and Infiniti, and the Mercedes-Benz had by far the smoothest of rides for my taste. Highly recommended if your looking for style, ride comfort and dependability.

This is my first Mercedes and I love it. It has everything. I was deciding between the E430 and the BMW 5-series and I just think the value is better with the E430. Also it looks better.

My E320 has been a great car so far. The ride is really smooth and street bumps can hardly be felt. The six cylinder has plenty of power even when the car is full of passengers. The am radio had terrible reception because of a loose antenna but was fixed. Another problem initially was a malfunctioning alternator sensor but again was fixed. The fit and finish is excellent. I traded a 2001 C320 for this because the C had many problems.
