For fun per dollar, you can't beat the MX-5. My 2016 GT is my third Miata, so obviously I like them. This one is definitely the best of the bunch, but I have one gripe. It's the built-in navigation system. Actually, I'm not thrilled with the 'infotainment' system in general, but the navigation system is dreadful. It came 'standard' with the GT trim, so I gave my Garmin to my daughter. Big mistake. Unlike my old Garmin, the Mazda nav system doesn't provide live traffic alerts, the directions don't seem as accurate, the interface and display are not as intuitive, and after three years, you have to pay for map updates (with Garmin, they're free). Right now, I'm debating turning the thing off and using the big ugly screen in the center of the dash as a mounting plate for a new Garmin. If I still have the car three years from now, that's probably what I'll do rather than buy a map update. With all the attention the engineers obviously gave to making this a really impressive car, you'd think they'd have opted for a state-of-the-art nav system. UPDATE March 2017 - The Nav system remains disappointing. Entering an address using the voice interface usually fails. The infotainment system controls cannot (or at least should not) be used while driving because you would need to take your eyes off the road to view the display screen. The car still drives well and looks great, though. I did have to replace the windscreen because it was cracked on two separate occasions by a pebbles hitting it. I don't know if this was just bad luck or something to do with the shape of the car, but it seemed odd that there would be two such instances in a month. Since having it replaced, it's been fine, but I've not done much highway driving. UPDATE March 2018 - I installed the last of the free map updates to the Nav system last month. If anything, it made the thing worse. It will direct you to where you want to go, but it often chooses a roundabout way that makes little sense. (In one case, it wanted me to turn left and make a U-turn rather than turn right, where it was clearly legal to do so.) It also insists on pronouncing Tampa as TanKa. It's still a great driving car, and it's had no mechanical problems. UPDATE September 2018 - The Nav system still sucks. It will often map out an indirect route or tell you to make a turn where none is possible. My only other observation is that I probably should have got an automatic rather than the six-speed manual. The stick is fun, but I'm getting older, and an automatic is easier.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata incredibly fun to drive. The Grand Touring trim level is nicely equipped with current technology. However, the absence of a rearview backup camera is a glaring oversight. Sitting low with high headrests, rollover bars, and windscreen, it is virtually impossible to see if anything is behind the vehicle. The cross-traffic alert system helps. But, having a visual of any obstacles (without having to put down the convertible top), would allow far more confidence when backing up.

To me, the most obvious and appealing aspect of this car is its looks. Simply put, it is downright beautiful. It has the flowing lines, sculpted body panels, and the agressive look of a very high end exotic sports car. A buyer could be happy buying the vehicle based on looks alone. Fortunately, unlike some beauties that I have owned, ( or been married to), this car's qualities are much more than skin deep. I have the GT model, and the ride is a good balance between outstanding handling and a reasonably smooth ride. I have had it on my favorite back roads, and I can see why the MX-5 has such a loyal and enthusiastic following. The 50/ 50 weight distribution is immediately evident as is the light weight along with great suspension engineering. It is a true driver's car that will put a smile on your face. Buy it for looks, buy it for the great road vehicle that it is. Either way, you will be pleased. After 5500 miles of pleasure driving......and I do mean pleasure, I am still thrilled to own this little beauty. The more I drive it, the more things I like about it. I use it as a fair weather vehicle, and a back roads cruiser. It is comfortable, but make no mistake, I consider it a big boy, (or girl) toy. Much as I enjoy it, it would not be my only vehicle. If you want a beautiful, fun second car, I highly recommend it. UPDATE: Aug. 2019. Still performing like new. No maintenance issues whatsoever. Still stunning to look at!

The neighbor's kid named the car Bob. Machine Grey/Black Top/Tan Interior Update: 5/13/2020 - Avg. 32.4 MPG - Daily Driver - Normal manufacturer recommended maintenance Winter driving is excellent using Michelin X-Ice tires on 16" Wheels (one size down from stock) No problems to report other than crappy sunvisors. Mazda should fix them they're horrible. The little car has been to Atlanta GA, Memphis TN, Ouray CO, Santa Fe NM, Hot Springs AR, Eureka Springs AR, Madison County IA, Hermann MO, over Monarch Pass in a snowstorm, through two winters and driven daily for two years now. Nothing has broken, nothing is rattling, top is still tight and waterproof, no oil leaks, no electrical problems, and the paint is till good. I get in, start the car and drive away. I had the brakes done a couple of weeks ago and they gave me a Mazda 6 for a loaner. Beautiful car and pretty fast too but since it's just me and an occasional passenger I'll keep Bob. Nothing below 50 or 60 thousand dollars feels anywhere close to an MX-5. I still giggle every time I drive this little car. Go drive one. Oh, and if you're going to take a long trip get some earplugs this little guy can be kind of loud at 80 MPH and above. :-)

I do hope someone reads what I have to say about this sports car. Yes, it's a honest sports car, one that I thought would never live up to the word "Sports Car", but absolutely did it for me. I'm a lot older these days and not really looking for what I was interested in back in the 1960's as far as foreign sports cars go. I was young and had all the quick thinking reflexes back then. I owned 2 MGB's, a 1964 and a 1966 and ran the hell out of both of them. No, I didn't buy the 2016 Mazda Club for all that excitement, I bought the car due to the total feeling I received from a test drive I went on one day a few years ago. I made the mistake of buying the automatic transmission. Don't do that!!! If you've ever owned a real sports car in your life, get the manual trans. and you'll never regret it. I can't wait to drive the damn thing each and every day. Only GOD knows exactly how much I appreciate what Mazda has done for the sportscar world.
