I have now had my 2019 CX-9 for 44 months. I am updating my review to say that I have had zero issues with the car since I bought it. I decided to buy it at the end of my 36 month lease because I could buy it for about 24K under the contract when it is selling locally for 31-33K. The following review still holds: I got my CX-9 after having a 2016 Lexus RX350 for three years. The CX-9 is much more fun to drive because it is more agile, has more technology for the money and is much easier to park. This car responds very well and hits the corners like a much smaller car. My only complaint is that the seat is not as comfortable as I had hoped. It has a dip in the seat, as if designed to cup your rear and is narrow and short by comparison to the RX350. The RX350 seats are really comfortable and roomy. This car has a moonroof, premium package with Bose Speakers and has lane assist, and blind spot warning, and a navigation system (with a 93 pg manual). To get that in a Lexus RX350 I would have had to pay much much more than I paid for the CX-9. It is built just as beautifully and fits 7 people in it. Like most 7 seat SUVs, it is hard to get out of the back row, but at least it has a well for their legs and plenty of room. I highly recommend it. I hope Mazda makes a hybrid CX-9. I would transition into that one if available in the future.

2019 CX-9 Touring w/ Premium Package

We previously had a CX-5 and were in the market for something new. Cross shopped Acura RDX and Volvo XC60 with the CX-9. To be honest, our final decision came down to price. Mazda had really good incentives and the dealer was extremely motivated to sell. When cross shopping we felt the RDX and XC60 didn't offer much of an upgrade for the extra price. Difference in price was ~ 6k and I just couldn't justify it. I'm really frugal though. If price was no option I would have gone with a decked out RDX. So about the CX-9, it really is a drivers car. Feels competent in turns and never feels underpowered. The reviews that say this feels like something smaller are spot on. The 2.5L turbo works well and even though the 6 speed tranny is down gears it feels fine. Other than better MPG I don't think a transmission with more ratios is needed. I love the scroll wheel, its intuitive and works well, and physical buttons for HVAC are a plus in my opinion(XC60 is all touch screen, no redundant controls for heating/cooling). On the highway this thing feels like a tank, its smooth and quiet, feels very high end. All the doors close with a thud and materials used on interior are nice. So you are probably wondering why the 3 star review, well its the seats themselves. Why in the world Mazda did you taper the front seats in the chest/shoulder area. Make sure you take your time to test them before you buy. I test drove a CX-9 twice before buying. Both were short trips focused on driving(under 10 minutes) and the seats never struck me as a problem. Its only when I got it home and went on a 30 minute trip that I noticed. I am 6' 195 pounds and would say I have a fairly average build. My wife is 5' 8" and 135 pounds and she says they are just ok, not great but don't bother her. The bolstering digs into your upper back when you sit all the way back in the seats. I knew the seats were not going to be anything like those in the XC60, but after living with them for a few weeks they strike me as a bit ridiculous. Who did Mazda use as a template for engineering, a 10 year old girl? Even the CX-5 seats are wider in the shoulders, explain to me how the smaller entry vehicle has larger seats??? My thought is they are trying to imitate a high end sports car to sync up with their branding of this as a drivers car. Yea, its a drivers car, but also an SUV used for long family trips. Put comfortable seats in!! Its a shame, the rest of the car is really a steal at this price, but the seats ruin it. I have seen complaints elsewhere about the seats as well as the center console digging into larger drivers right knee. I find the center console to be fine, its just the seats that are bad. I like the firmness of them and the leather itself seems good (doesn't feel like leatherette or pleather) but the design is flawed. Maybe they thought it needed to be that aggressive since anyone that buys this car is going to be going all out all the time.... To the contrary most buyers probably never even push this in the corners so the bolstering is a waste. If you are a smaller human or have narrow shoulders this is a great car, otherwise pass to something more comfortable.

This car rocks

This car rocks. I've had the 2018 GT model for 3 months now and I can honestly say that even beyond that “new car feeling” phase, I really love this car. The good: 1) It is downright stylish and beautiful, both inside and out. It really is a head-turner. There aren’t many other CX9’s out there, and I often get asked about the car. 2) It is plenty powerful albeit with a very short turbo lag. I can’t think of any occasion where the engine wasn’t putting out what I needed. I can even burn rubber from a stop if ever I feel the need. 3) Has just about every safety feature. And unlike other cars I have driven, all these features are “well-tuned” and rarely do I get a false warning. 4) Handles like a sport car. Takes corners well, and instills confidence in the drive – feedback is good and you just know what the car is going to do. 5) Rides well – takes bumps very nicely and is, for the most part, quiet inside. 6) The Bose stereo is great. My gripes: 1) You cannot use the touchscreen when driving. Mazda disables this for safety. 2) The center console is extra wide and my knee hits up against it. 3) The stop-and-go cruise control takes you down to a stop in traffic jams, but you have to press resume or press the gas pedal once the car in front of you moves forward. This resume process can get tedious and I can’t imagine any safety reason why this is required. Just go already. 4) The adaptive cruise control is not smart enough to know that a car has just cut in front of you until that car is about ½ way into your lane, which often times requires intervention especially if that car did so aggressively. 5) Although you can roll up the windows after turning off the car, you can not close the sunroof unless the ignition is on. 6) There is no light in the glove box, nor does it lock. 7) Although it sounds like a great idea, I really don’t get much use out of the sign recognition system and find it gimmicky. It only shows you stop signs and speed limit signs. Don’t get me wrong, the feature is fine, I really don’t pay attention to it and don’t find it useful. 8) The built-in navigation system is not very good – hard to enter addresses, and the graphics are mediocre, nor does it include integrated traffic. I have added Mazda Carplay which has helped, but you lose turn-by-turn guidance on the head-up display when you use Google Maps/Apple Maps/Waze. 9) The lines on the backup camera don’t move with your steering wheel. 10) The Mazda Connect info system is not as intuitive to use as it could be and could be laid out a little better. Seems like there are a few more clicks than are necessary to get around. 11) The engine can be a little loud when accelerating. 12) The fuel economy readings are tightly-coupled with the tripometers. The readings that show on the dashboard are not current readings – they are readings since you last reset your tripometer. You can get current gas mileage readings, but it is buried as an app on the Mazda connect system and something you have to navigate to and open up to see. In summary…. If you are looking for an SUV with this style and size, then this car is definetly worth considering. Sitting in it is like sitting in a cockpit. Stylish, comfortable, sporting, powerful, quiet, and fully-loaded. Attention to details like nothing else in its class (Jeep, Explorer, Highlander, etc), and I dare say that it rivals the luxury brands. And a Mazda, right? Who knew?

After 5 years of ownership, I am still happy with my purchase. The engine purrs like kitten when you start it up, and roars like a lion when you need to pass on a busy highway. No issues or concerns to report at this time. Still zoom zoom with my Mazda

Beautiful, fun to drive love my CX9 Signature

I bought 2 Hondas in 80's, two Acura in 90's, then a CX-7 Grand Touring AWD several years ago. Loved it! I saw the redesigned CX-9 a couple years back and loved the new styling! The wait was over last month. While researching 3 row crossovers I noticed the CX-9 had great feedback, on par with luxury models. I decided to drive a Grand Touring FWD, but then I saw and drove the Signature, WOW! I used a buying service to get a negotiating price, then went to a nearby dealer and was surprised at the deal I was able to negotiate at end-of-month on a new Signature. The Mazda CX-9 Signature may not carry the prestige or have a 6 cylinder like Audi or ACURA, but handles / rides / accelerates as well, and is actually better looking (in my humble opinion. I went with Black, and love the Sedona leather interior and great trim accents - very classy! Also surprised to learn the CX-9 doesn't require premium gas (like the older CX-7) and yet it delivers the 310 ft-lbs of torque on regular or premium! Do your self a favor and check out the CX-9 Signature before you buy a Lexus, ACURA or AUDI. You'll get a great 3 row cross-over, and won't see the same vehicle next to you at every other intersection...
