New Car Performs

I used to have a Volvo XC90 (for 10 years) but when it came time to replace, I needed to expand my horizons due to cost. A friend owns and loves the Mazda CX-9, so I took a test drive. My SO fell in love immediately. It took a little longer for me to come around, but for a turbo engine the car really moves. It has great styling (everyone around my office has complimented me) and the interior is beautifully crafted. The drivers seat is a little smaller than my previous SUV, and the actual cargo room is practically nil (without folding down the third row) but I love that the second row reclines and shifts in 2 pieces, making it very adaptable for my family. Gas mileage to date appears to be in range, although lower than I originally projected/anticipated. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase.

Graceful Mile Muncher

I recently got to spend a week driving the new 2017 Mazda CX-9 Signature Edition. Initially I didn't have high hopes. You see, I'm a sports car guy. The CX-9 is an SUV and we all know how well SUV's handle, right? However, I decided to approach it with an open mind and hoped some redeeming quality would pique my interest. The exterior was surprisingly attractive - not your typical slab-sided SUV or "look-at-my-cray-cray-design" crossover. Instead, it was an elegantly styled SUV body with very artistic details. Overall, I'd call it "wind-sculpted." Throughout the week, I found myself looking at other SUV drivers with pity, wondering how they could stand driving those bland boxes when something this smart looking was available. And as much as I liked the exterior, the interior was even MORE attractive: black carpeting, auburn red leather seats, piano black panels, chrome bits for accent, and rosewood switch bezels on the doors. It has to be the most beautiful and inviting interior I've ever been in. It's the kind of interior that makes you want to stay just a bit longer. When I was informed that it only had a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, I immediately expected that it was going to be underpowered but Mazda's SkyActiv technology that they keep touting is evidently a real thing and not just a marketing ploy because the CX-9 never really felt underpowered to me. Sure, it wasn't going to win any drag races but it was quick to reach the speed limit and once at speed, it offered plenty of power for passing and overtaking. But what really amazed me and changed my mind about the CX-9 was the handling. After driving around for a few days, getting comfortable with it, I got a little bored and decided to push it a little down some backroads near my house that had a nice mix of curves and hills. Selecting "Sport" mode on the center console, I got kind of aggressive with it and drove it more like a sports car. And the CX-9 never batted an eye. It gracefully glided through the curves like no SUV I've ever driven. The engine and transmission were responsive to my driving style, helping me get the most out of the car, and when I needed to slow down fast, the anti-lock brakes did a superb job of controllably and confidently slowing it down. I've always known Mazda for the Miata, but it appears that even their more pedestrian people movers have that same sporting DNA that people who love to drive look for. On top of that, Mazda loaded the CX-9 with a raft of safety technology to keep you in your lane, warn you of blind spot drivers and cross traffic as you back up in parking lots, and many other things. When the week was up, I was thoroughly impressed with this vehicle and I know that if I ever need an SUV, Mazda will be the first (and probably ONLY) brand I look at. The only thing I could have wanted on the car would be paddle shifters behind the steering wheel. It would have made it even more fun to drive and a little less SUV-ish. Still, overall, it's a winner. Very nicely done, Mazda. Very nicely done.

If you're after a quiet ride, this is it. As road surfaces continue to deteriorate, a quiet ride is difficult to achieve. With this vehicle Mazda has succeeded in achieving quiet. At 70mph on a lousy highway surface it's possible to have a normal conversation within the vehicle. That's what won me over. Six months later: on occasion the safety feature adaptive cruise control will "see" a hazard in the adjacent lane and go into an auto braking mode, which is totally unnecessary. Everything else is excellent, including achieving 28 MPG on the highway. This vehicle is infinitely superior to the Acura MDX it replaced.

Car and Driver is right - this 3-row SUV drives like a small car. Handles great, good acceleration, never feels like the engine is working too hard. Love the cargo space.

Too Small for Too Tall

D Trompeter, 09/09/2018

I have had the 2017 CX-9 for 3 months and unfortunately will most likely trade it in within the next month. The good: nicely appointed interior, great gas mileage, fun to drive, decent cargo space but not that of a Honda Pilot etc, good sound and entertainment with logical and easy to use controls, great heads up display and lane departure warning features within the display, great road car and quiet but...the bad for me: I'm tall (6,4") and simply cannot get comfortable in the driver's seat. It doesn't go back quite far enough so my right leg is too bent which brings me to the real problem; the center console is very high with a hard plastic piece the protrudes about an inch that hits into the side of the knee. I literally have to drive with a towel wrapped around my right knee. I talked to Mazda and went to a dealership but no replacement part of modification that they can do so I'm selling the car. This car is not a good one for large families either in number or physical stature. Also, I do no like the light that stays on constantly near the controls for the sunroof, it is annoying at night so had to put tape over it. The car also sits lower and has lower clearance than some of the other's in the category so if you want to sit up high or plan to do rougher roads probably not the right car for you. The CX-9 is a quality car for sure, unfortunately just not the right car for me.

I’ve owned 2 Acura MDX’s and most recently a Hyundai Santa Fe and this car has them both beat. It’s packed with great technology. I wanted something with great handling and the CX9 fits the bill. It has great acceleration, steering and braking. It’s a fun driving car, super smooth and frisky.

This SUV beats the competitors hands down when it comes to performance, technology and safety features. It is not that Mazda's competitors don't have those features, its just that they add many more dollars to the final cost. Mazda doesn't play that game. It is true that the Mazda has 4 different trims available but Mazda is very generous even at the base level. I have owned 1 Mercedes, 1 Audi, and 3 Infinities and after driving this SUV I no longer see the point in paying extra for those name plates. They were all wonderful cars but they were expensive to buy and expensive to maintain. This SUV is quiet and comfortable. It has great acceleration especially when you consider how big it is. It is going to be cheaper to maintain than my previous cars and not just a little cheaper but a lot cheaper. I did opt to get the extended warranty because this SUV comes with a lot of Tech and I plan on keeping it for a long time. I like the styling but I understand the look is not for everyone, but I have already received complements in parking lots.

When considering handling, styling inside and out, and cost for extras, the new CX-9 beat all other vehicles we test drove. We liked the Hyundai Santa Fe since we have the Sport as our second vehicle, but 7-seater had not been updated compared with the 2013 version and we were looking for something a little more fun and new. The Nissan Pathfinder was nice, a bit more spacious, but when adding the extras, the cost was more and it ultimately didn't not have the beautiful interior and exterior styling. Overall extremely happy with this purchase.

Stopped in parking lot in remote area. Returned to vehicle and it would not start. 2017 cx9 with 4100 miles and full tank of gas. Engine would just grind when pushing on started. Seemed like it was not getting gas. Had to call road service. Had to wait an hour till they got there. Vehicle had to be towed about 35 miles to dealer. Dealer could not determine cause of not starting. No fuel pressure coming from fuel pump. Had to leave vehicle and take loaned. Very unusual malfunction with only 4100 miles. Still dont know cause. Very disappointed with vehicle malfunction with such low miles Update. Car in dealer service 6 days. Fuel pump computer failure. Computer modulator had to be replaced after 4100 miles. All covered by warranty plus loaner car but it happened while on vacation. Fortunately i was at my destination and it didn't happen at a rest stop. Still questioning the reliability of vehicle.

There are lots of good competitors of the CX-9, but the looks, stance, and workmanship of the mazda cx-9 signature is special. Much detail given to interior detail, very advanced safety features, IIHS top safety pick+, good accelaration, yet competitive gas mileage. Very fun to drive. This is my first mazda and I am Looking forward to driving it for years to come!

Low Tire Pressure Warning light SUPER ANNOYING

AG, 11/19/2017
2017 Mazda CX-9 Touring 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
7 of 8 people found this review helpful

I drive 60 miles a day in Chicago city and highway. The low tire sensor comes on every other day despite resetting the monitor after Checking and slightly adjusting tire pressure. The dealership said that Mazda is just being "extra safe" about letting you know the pressure has changed. The issue is that this warning light comes on with a change of around 1 or 2 psi, so you won't be able to drive too far without the car beeping at you. It's a flaw with thew system but Mazda is disgusing it as a safety feature...

I bought a 2017 Signature edition CX9 about 3 months ago. Since then I had a software problem which crashed sensors and rear view camera (a software update “fixed” this). After that I noticed the ac would be set to 62 yet it will be hell heat shooting thru the vents. It was either 60 degree setting (cold) and any setting above that 61+ degrees will shoot extremely hot air thru vents. So either freezing or dying of heat exhaustion. After complaining to dealer they told me the ac head unit was recalled and they exchanged for another one that does the same thing sporadically. The passenger front seat is very high and there is no way to lower it. If you have a long torso as I do, you’ll either be driving or in the rear seat so your head won’t rub the roof. Cargo space is not great, it’s simply ok. The power outlet was placed almost on the floor of the passenger side so charging your phone requires painful and dangerous maneuvers into the passenger side floorboard (who thought that was a good idea???) The Bose stereo sound is unimpressive even with extremely high quality files. My base corolla stereo sounded more exciting. The safety features work sometimes and depend on weather. If it’s snowing don’t count on your safety equipment to work properly. I’m disappointed with my purchase. I owned Mazda’s before but I think they rushed into “premium” while neglecting reliability and quality. Very likely last Mazda I will purchase.

CX-9 Signature. Reliable Luxury

After 4 years, still love It and have no plans to replace it. We looked hard at lot of SUV's and cross-overs before settling and I really wish we could take what each did well and combine it, but you have to sacrifice. What won out is the drivability of the Mazda. It is just plain fun to drive. Keep in mind that this is a Signature Review and really only applies to that model. The AWD is better than my past Honda Pilot and I was very comfortable driving in the snow and felt in control. The traction with the factory tires was better than I expected on icy hills. Electronic steering is comfortable at all speeds and passenger comfort is great, even for short trips in the third row were on par with the Pilot with neither being very comfortable. We get an average of 25 MPG highway @ 70-75 MPH. 65-70 will increase and overall average has stayed right at 23 MPG with mixed driving. The little turbo 4 always feels in control. Good smooth acceleration and the transmission mating is one of the best I have driven in a long time as the two are paired very well. Towing a 2500 pound trailer was super easy and other than the rear end of the car sagging a lot, it never felt like it was lugging the motor, there was always plenty left and the transmission shifted very normally. Not quite a diesel with torque, but pretty impressive nonetheless. Gas mileage went way down while towing as 500 miles at ~70-75 MPH we saw 10-12 MPG. Though we are told there should be an increase, I did not see much difference between low and high octane gas. Things I don't like - Navigation. It is not terrible, but no where near on par with other brands, and even Mitsubishi and Toyota have better navigation. There was traffic that is greyed out, but Mazda did not continue the deal with the provider, so that is not available, and we really miss that. No weather at all, not even the HD over the air weather. Miss that even on Toyota. I don't even mind paying for it with XM like Ford, but that is not even an option. There is a limited traffic city map, but it is worthless. The controls for the radio are not great either. I would like to have seen them have multiple memory configurations. I don't like having to go through all of my wife's stations just as much as she does not like to go through mine. There is also not a mode to just scan through stations on XM or Radio or get to saved music easily. You have to scroll to the right place and make the adjustment. It also takes upwards to 30-40 seconds to boot the navigation the first time. That is a long time to sit before even being able to enter the address for your destination. There are not enough outlets for today's requirements. We have had to purchase an extension from the back to the mid seats for the kids. Also, no inverter that is standard on most cars today. The one cig light plug up front gets in the way of the passenger as it is on the side. This is required to run a higher amperage plug to your phone if you plan on using anything like Waze as the built-in USB are too low amperage. Seats are comfortable, but very little control. There is no tilting, which is handy for taller people and even though electric, you only have up and down and forward and back with only lumbar and memory for the driver. Why Mazda? You are trying to hit the luxury market, but completely missed the boat on this one. For 45K, I expect a minimum of tilt, and memory for the mirrors and seats. I would have paid for that option. Lane keep is OK, adaptive headlights on the signature are great, and the radar cruise control is right on the money. On the highway, my cruise control is almost always on, and it has been tested more than once with people merging into my lane and the system having to brake hard for them. Bose sound is good, but not great. The noise canceling does make a big difference in the road noise heard in the Signature and lower models without it - a bit quieter. Signature road noise is on par with the Lincoln and far better than the Grand Cherokee we drove for a week. Car feels as solid as any of the higher end luxury brands and the leather and trim seem to be on par as well. Other than the color, I could not tell the difference in the napa leather, so can't say that is a marketing ploy or not. Moonroof is nothing to write home about and oddly Mazda is not keeping up with the competition there. A few small items and Mazda would have hit it out of the park on this vehicle and if it holds up as well as my past Mazda, I will be happy. Did I say how much fun the car is to drive? I am not sure it is a luxury substitute and part of the market segment Mazda is trying to hit with the model to compete with the high end general manufactures, and I think they are behind on the technology and general appeal, but they hit the mark on the engine and drivetrain and after 10K miles, I am still happy.

Have had the 2017 CX-9 Signature for a year with absolutely zero problems. I usually research a car carefully before I go to a dealer, but had to replace a flood loss on short notice. I drove the CX-9, bought it the same night, and have not looked back. For the combination of clever design, build quality, and price, it is an unbeatable value.

So I had two great cars. A 2017 Mazda 3,2.5 manual that was my daily driver, and a 2014 Audi A7 which was my travel car. My wife has a 2016 Audi Q5 so we had a little of everything. We are moving to a new home on a gravel road and I knew I needed something with a little more height than either of my cars. I really have never liked SUV's, I went and drove the Porsche Macan but it did not float my boat for the cost. I looked at the Volvo's as well as the new Chevy Transverse. All were nice but I really did not get excited about any. I actually really liked my wife's Q5, but wanted something just a bit larger, but not a Q7. So I popped into the Mazda dealership and had a look at the CX-9. After a long drive I started to think this might be a good option. I drove a few other brands including the new VW, and finally decided I wanted the Mazda. I have had the vehicle for about 4 months and think I can now give a fair review. OK I am kinda of a car guy I've owned a lot of different brands, but very few Japanese. I just always thought they felt a little cheap. Not horrible but I just preferred German. I have to say the Mazda feels very high quality. The material for the most part are on par with the Q5, the leather is very nice. Doors shut with a very nice sound. Ride and comfort are great, probably a little smoother than the Q5, not a A7, but at about 45% the cost, a darn nice car. I like the looks, and I like the size. It handles very well to be off the ground. I just drove it on a 900 mile trip and just for fun used premium fuel going up and regular coming home. MPG was within 1 mile, 27.5 with premium 26.5 regular. Really no drivers fatigue at all. What I find amazing is it had more safety features and gizmo's than my 2014 A7, and they all worked well. I like the auto dimming headlights and active cruise control. So whats not to like.....In a word the infotainment system. It is really bad, the voice recognition is horrible, much worse than my 2017 3, the navigation is a PIA. Mazda just announced it was adding Apple Car Play and I can tell you it is really needed. I have a 2016 Chevy Work Truck with Car Play and it is hands down much better than what Mazda is using. I only hope I am able to upgrade to this system as Mazda says it will be available. Also the other area that is not so great is the automatic climate control, so far when it is hot, it just blows the air conditioner on high continuously. I'll mention this when I take the car in for it's first service, it may be just a simple adjustment. Would I buy again, short answer yes, long answer only if I was guaranteed I could get Car Play, its really needed that badly IMO.

I canvassed luxury and regular SUVs and the cx-9 was a top choice. Besides the Audi Q7 there are few SUVs that give you a very attractive exterior, high quality interior, advanced technology, and most importantly reliability. The interior is roomy and fits 2 large car seats with no problems. The safety technology and heads up display is fantastic and it will be hard to buy another car without it. I purchased the GT model and would highly recommend it. It’s not cheap and creeps into lower luxury price range but you get much more with it. The value is there for sure.

Nav. Screen Problem

I purchased my Mazda CX9 in 2017 and it has all the bells and whistles. Unfortunately, my issue is with the Nav screen having stress fractures in the top right corner.....enough to make it difficult to read the clock. They said it was due to the summer heat but if it was glass and not thin plastic I would not have a problem. This has caused me a lesser trade-in value. I likely will not be purchasing another CX9 as I get a reminder of this cracking visual daily.

Sell your car before the engine fails

I have a 2017 cx9 with 85k miles. The engine just failed. Mazda has a known manufacturing defect and will not issue a recall. Look up "Mazda CX9 coolant leak at cylinder head" Dealer has stated they are seeing a lot of these cars come in with the same issue. Roughly $8000 to replace engine.

Love it! Only reason I checked OK/NA is because I haven't had to resell or think about reselling yet so I don't know that answer.

CX-9 handles as promised with great acceleration and stability. In dry weather, anyway. The tires that come standard are sub-standard for winter conditions and render the all-wheel drive feature almost meaningless. Exterior design is sleek and catches the eye. The interior is comfortable and thoughtfully laid-out. Good sight lines for the driver, but the entertainment system is overcomplicated and the lack of a CD option - even an after-market option - is a negative in my opinion. The biggest design flaw as far as the interior goes is that there almost no place in the front of the cabin to store anything, even change. There are two cup holders and a small, shallow armrest storage compartment. The glovebox would be small in an economy model. This is an SUV, not a car used only for short hops around town. It seems the engineers and design team were trying to hard to make the SUV seem like a sportscar on the inside. Failure.

Signature CX-9

This car is very nice. Two factors kept me from purchasing.......1) Engine was not very responsive. I'm not 100% satisfied with the performance of the v6 in my 2013 cx-9, the 4cyl turbo is worse. 2) The driver's seat does not have the capability to tilt the lower seat cushion that my 2013 does.

I looked at the car for a second vehicle I could use since I have a work take home car. Since I have brought it home my wife has fallen in love with it. We have a special needs daughter that loves to ride in the car due to its comfort. All in all I really love the car and the value. Looked at other cars along the same size and this is one of the few that would fit our 2 six foot plus children in the back seat comfortably.

Very nice interior but the front exterior is not very appealing. The car is roomy but doesn't come with option of V6, therefore no power. The handling and noise are comparable to other SUV in the same class ( pilot, highlander).

Quiet and very smooth ride. Have 161K miles with only regular maintenance. Still gets 28 mpg on the hwy! Not wild about the climate control position.
