For a 1995 with approxiamately 150,000 miles it has very few problems. Just replaced the clutch and rear struts recently. Every other repair has been routine. Air Bypass Control Valve does occasionly stick. It would cost $600 to replace this valve, instead I unstick the valve when it sticks by knocking on it with a pocket knife. I have also added performance tires and with the manual transmission this car is a blast to drive.

Change the Tranny Oil!

A reviewer wrote in that this car has a transmission without a filter. It makes common sense that, to keep the selnoid valves from gumming up with dirty transmission oil, an easy and inexpensive way to keep that transmission in peak working order BEFORE it crashes is to change the oil.....a little PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE will go a long way to keeping this car on the road and out of the shop. One guy wrote that he bought the car at 113,000 miles on it and 2,000 miles later, the transmission went out. Now...ask yourself...do you think the previous owner changed the transmission oil frequently? (every 35,000 miles)

Bought this automatic trans LX in 1998 with 60,000 miles on it. Very reliable. Do regular oil changes, preventive maintenance, timing belts and have a wonderful mechanic. Problems with door lock tumblers. Replaced radiator, axle and starter - pretty good for a 14 year old car. No oil leaks. December 2007 at 198,000 miles had to have tranny checked. Code 42 - starting to fail but only intermittently in 1st gear. He said 95 Mazdas had terrible transmissions, but mine the exception. Still running at 224,000 but and 1st gear issues now and then. Love this car. AC worked wonderfully but now freon costs more than car is worth!

Bought this car new in 1996 (left over from previous year). Despite other opinions I love the way it looks and I consider it basically trouble free. Friends with Hondas and Toyotas envy me for the little trouble I had with it. Reached 145k miles and never got me stuck on the road. The only main problems I had were the oxygen sensor (changed it 3 times). I lately read Mazda 626 is known for faulty oxygen sensors. Changed timing belt twice as the book recommends. I think it was a really great car for the money, but now the catalytic converter needs some $800 repair job. I would buy Mazda again, but hate the looks of the new Mazda 6: too bulky. Will consider buying a 2007 Acura TL.

Great car with problem transmission

I bought this JAPANESE car with 104k miles on it. I got it cheap because the FORD transmission was burned up. I had the trans. rebuilt 3 months after I bought it, for $2000. It has run fine ever since, but the new trans. overheats when driving up and down mountain roads or sitting in heavy traffic for long periods. The fluid will boil and run out of the trans. vent, so I had a hose hooked up which runs up to the top of the engine compartment. This is a chronic problem with these CD4E Ford transmissions. But, the car runs great, has really good acceleration for a 2.0 liter 4 - nothing else important has gone wrong - it now has 145,000 miles on it. I like the car - will keep it til it dies.

Wife purchased in 1994 4-cylinder LX as a 1995 "Mazda program car" (had 18K miles, now has 107K). Transmission light came on @ 1999 (car was most likely abused prior to purchasing with 18K miles)- we couldn't feel anything different but had it replaced anyway. No transmissions problems since then. Other than regular maintenance like oil/filter changes, the only major services have been a new timing belt and replacement of front drive axle gear (tie rods, links, boot covers...). It has been very reliable in our 15 yrs of ownership. I purchased a new 2000 Protege (loved it for what it was) but traded it in for 2004 MPV (3 kids happened). Want to buy Mazdaspeed3 but 626 keeps going.

I've owned my 626 for 4 years. I bought it used so it is now about 8 years old. It has never let me down or left me stranded. At 60,000 miles, I had the timing belt changed, and the exhaust system. But those are normal things that you would have to do on any car that you keep for those number of years. So far, I love this car and it still turns heads. I always stay on top of my maintance so I don't wait until something goes wrong or put it off until becomes so expensive. Maybe that's why it has been so faithful to me.

I bought this car about over years now, and my first week experience was the transmission, whenever I going up a little hill I have to force the transmission to shift and sometime the overdrive light come on so I have to stop the car turn it off and turn it back on again to reset the computer. With this problem I have drive from Philadelphia to Florida twice with no problem until I drive it in a snow storm and override the transmission. I take good care of the car, and I get so attach to it I didn't ready to let it go so I replace the transmission and she is running great.

I have a 1995 Maza 626 LX--4cyl. model with 210,000 miles. This car is amazing. I've had very few problems with the car--no mechanical issues, occassional exhaust problems that stem from New England winters and road salt. Everything else has been standard maintenance--oil, plugs-wires, etc. I know that eventually I will need to get another car--but I'm sure that I can only be disappointed after such great luck with this one.

I bought this car used from a friend with 92,000 who properly maintained it. Ten years later we're at 312,000 and going strong (we blow some oil through, but, not too much - it runs G R E A T!. I drove it to New Orleans, then Iowa City (from New Jersey) last summer, and averaged 32 mpg w/ a/c on. The 2.0 5 speed is a good combination, very fun to drive.

Vehicle is 2.0 4cyl auto hatchback with 150,000 km. Purchased from 2 owner who was somewhat fanatical with maintenance. Inside and out car is like new even after 15 years. Have changed radio cassette to CD player, put a set of Eunos alloys with decent rubber on and added a pod filter to improve air flow for motor. Performance is quite good for 2.0 liter auto but looking to improve it with new sports exhaust including new cat. Will also upgrade the suspension. No problems in auto from fully imported Japanese models. Ultra reliable as long as scheduled maintenance performed on time.

I bought this car when it was 4 years old. I take good care of the car but I've had to replace the CV-Joints, transmition, exhaust manifold, the motor mounts, and trans. mounts. There is also a lifter in the engine knocking. In the past 9 months I have put over $3500 into this car. The car I traded in for this was also a 626 and I drove it until it had 160,000 w/o doing ANY major work. Mazda's quality has sure gone downhill!

Condition Declines Rapidly After 50k

My Mazda 626, like many others, required a new, $2000 transmission at about 80,000 miles. I have always kept the vehicle well maintained and was saddened to watch the over all condition and quality of the car decline reapidly after about 50k miles. The new transmission was the icing on the cake. I also had to replace the instrument panel, several valves, and a faulty exhaust system. Mazda North America is unresponsive to its customers. I give Mazda a D for quality.

I bought my 1995 Mazda LX 626 in 1997 when it had 11000 miles on it. I still have it and now it has 160000 miles. Although I have heard of others having transmissions problems with automatic I must have gotten lucky as I have had 0 problems with the trasmission. I have always had it serviced regularly: timing belts, slick50, fluids, etc. Both front axles have had to be replaced but that is the largest repair to date. I do have a lifter clicking noise. I have had it for a year or so now. I get the heavier weight oil put in on an oil change and the noise will go away until I get close to the next oil change.

My wife has driven this car since we bought it as a demonstrator from the dealer. Overall it is a very agile, but strains a little bit on long hills. However, we had one major problem. The automatic transmission failed at only 30,000 miles. It was replaced under warranty (following a 3-day dispute about when the warranty officially expired). The replacement transmission developed a slow leak after a year in service. Other than that it has worked OK, so far. The car is at 60,000 miles. The air conditioning has gone out and we're worried the transmission will go out again, so we're considering a replacement while it still has some trade-in value.

I bought this car used in 1998 and have driven it hard ever since. It just keeps going. The odometer just flipped to 200,000 this week and I'm thinking of getting her a paint job. I've been pretty good about routine maintenance-- and that's all I've ever really had to put into this vehicle--plugs, wires, brakes, oil. The standard transmission makes up for the 4 cylinder engine. The best part is that I've got no payments and it's dirt cheap to insure.

This is a great car with over 30mpg. Bought it in 1995 and now has over a 150K and still hums perfectly. Stay away from the automatic transmissions; if you did your research when you bought it you would know it has problems. Bought new in 1995 and the only problem with it has been the antenna motor and some paint peeling last year. Only money spent has been on normal REGULAR maintenance and new tires. This car still has the original clutch. Pro's are reliability, comfort and mpg. Con's are cup holders, seat belt frays, antenna motor. I wouldn't trade or sell this car for the world.

I have 115k miles on my 95 626 LX. We have replaced wear and tear items repeatedly, but engine keeps on going. Tranny went out at 99k and EasyCare honored the warranty and gave us a new tranny no questions asked. We were floored, but happy. My radiator cracked this week, and the belts are ready for replacement, but I am having the repairs done. Until the timing belt pops, or the tranny stays on the highway without me, I'll keep on driving her. She does what she is supposed to, and she's paid for.

When I purchased the 626 from Don Rosen Mazda, it was considered a pre-owned certified car. However, there was a new transmission, broken glass in the door, the window would not go up, and there were various dents in the car. Consequently, I have to bring the car back 8 times. When I asked about all this, they said they lost the paperwork. Shortly after that the dealership was closed down and now they are selling BMW'S and minni's. The transmission just broke down and it is costing me $2300. What action can I take?

My grandparents bought this car brand new in 1995, after driving it for 18 years, they gave it to my father when his car broke down. After that, my father gave it to my sister and I. For a 24 year old car, having regular maintenance for 18 years, and then being driven several hours every day for 3 years with no maintenance. I'm surprised this car is still running. So far, the only major problem has been that my sister and had some broken belts (fixed before completely broken) and two dead cylinders. Other than that, this car has worked flawlessly. Great mileage, comfortable, the fancy swinging climate control. Honestly, if you can find one and need a good first car that's fairly easy to work on, this will do it, especially for the low (generally <1000) price tag on the used market. I'm not saying this is the best car by any stretch, its not the fanciest, fastest, or most comfortable. But it will do it and it will do it well enough.

I bought this used car in sept 06, June 07 the transmission needed replacement! The previous owner had replaced the transmission Nov 05, one of the reasons why I bought this car despite the negative reviews it received! It was a great car to drive and didn't give problems until the transmission caved less than a year of my driving it. I bought it at 180,000 miles and now it's stopped running at 185740 miles! What a waste!
