Where's the catch?

It is hard to find a true bargain in life. Most of the times, things you thought would be bargains are in fact, slightly rubbish. Therefore, when something seems to be a bargain, there is usually a catch. The new Mazda 3 is a rare thing : it is a bargain. Well, there are a few things wrong with this car. Visibility is, at best, ''rather poor'', to put it gently. Cargo space is also a bit limited for the segment. And I am strugling to find more things wrong with this car. Anyway, the poor visibility is almost a non issue when you start looking at this car. It truly is amazing looking. It is not ''good looking for the segment'', it looks amazing in its own right. And the best thing is that the interior is just as good. It looks italian and feels like german built quality, which is kind of best of both worlds. Anyway, about the cargo space, if you are looking at that kind of car, you clearly are not shopping for a minivan, aren't you? What about reliability? I have a 2.0l manual GX hatchback, and nothing went wrong. It's also fairly simple mechanicaly, since it has a naturally aspirated carry over engine and should be rather reliable in the future as well. The suspension is effective but actually fairly simple, and there is a lot of working room in the engine bay. That means that owner maintenance is fairly accessible (looking at you, VW). Oh, and the manual transmission is sublime. The clutch is very well weighted and the shifts are precise and quick. What does set it appart is mainly the way it drives. It drives amazingly well. It manages to be comfortable and sporty at the same time. It is incredibly quiet at highway speeds for a car of this class as well. The seats are also very comfortable. So where is the catch? It drives even better than a german car, looks as good as an italian car, but here is the cherry on top of the cake : it was built by the Japanese. It's also practical and very well priced. That is the good thing about this car : there is no catch.

Worth the price of admission

This car exceeds my expectations and I’m a car fanatic who values details. Mazda tried hard on this car and you can tell. It drives largely like my A3 Quattro I leased, though it won’t implode after 45k miles and bend every rim it has. Further, it costs much less and every surface is finished properly. The Bose is downright impressive. Seat comfort is high (memory an added bonus). Infotainment is logical and easy to use, and the car is quiet even up to speeds of 80 mph except for some concrete surfaces. The ride is controlled and well damped, though bad roads will send some slams through but what do you expect with low profile 18”s. And for the way it handles, which is excellent, the trade off and stability are worth it. Seriously short list this car. I think only the Accord (NOT civic) can match or beat the cohesiveness of this design. Not to mention the 3 is far more beautiful than any Honda ever. Last worthy mentions: headlights are great and I enjoy the active bending (though not required) and the heads up includes Nav directions and blind spot info. Pretty spiffy! The adaptive cruise and lane departure are sometimes abrupt but make sense in line with the sporty drive it yourself Mazda ethos. Conclusions: For the price you can’t beat it. Most people don’t need accord size, so why not do more with less. A premium product at a mainstream price. Took the time to write this because Mazda should be recognized for how special their products are.

Upscale Design, Styling, Features - Econobox Price

2019 Mazda 3 Select 4dr Sedan (2.5L 4cyl 6A)

Initial thoughts on 2019 4th gen Mazda3 -- Ergonomic multi-function display & controls; superb instrument cluster display; front seating comfort with fast simple manual adjustment; upscale interior fit & finish (black vinyl); key-less walk-away locking & push-button start; modest, but very usable trunk space; and quiet, comfortable highway cruising all make this 2019 Mazda3 Sedan Select the high-value leader in the ever-dwindling compact sedan sector. The new-to-2019 torsion beam rear suspension degrades the nimble handling of previous generation's independent suspension. The 2.5L normally-aspirated 4-cylinder should contribute to low maintenance and long life compared with the small turbocharged engines of most competitors. But, 186 Hp / 186 lb-ft is not enough grunt for this 3,100 lb gross weight car -- don't expect a lot of zip especially with the 6-speed automatic transmission in economy mode (use the Sport switch on the center console to change out of the default econo setting). My wife, the primary driver, finds the 186 hp engine mated to the 6-speed AT more than adequate and is averaging 35 mpg in mixed highway/city use. I much prefer the performance of this Mazda traditional automatic transmission to the "rubber band" feel of CVTs found on most economy compact cars. And, while the jury is still out, I suspect that CVTs will not nearly match the longevity of traditional automatic transmissions. Rear seating is tight -- tighter than that of our smaller 1990 Honda Accord that we traded for this Mazda3 -- carrying adults in the Mazda's rear seat is an emergency procedure. There are a couple of other niggles: The Mazda remote key fob is larger than and not as well-executed as that of the Honda Civic; the electric steering is responsive, but excessively light with minimal feedback -- again, my wife has no complaint; the "Mazda Connect Owner's Manual" covering the infotainment system that is referenced in the primary Owner's Manual is not available in hard copy, only on the dashboard center display (while the battery is rapidly depleting, the idling Mazda3 is burning up our precious carbon fuels, or while the distracted driver-cum-reader meanders through traffic); the printed primary "Owner's Manual" runs hundreds of pages half of which are safety cautions and warnings from Mazda USA's legal team -- e.g., prohibitions against allowing children to play in the trunk compartment or warnings against jumping from moving cars with detail on why these are not good ideas. Despite these niggles, the 2019 Mazda3 is a very complete package with design, fit & finish, and strong underlying automobile technology that far exceeds it's price point. The purchase from DFW area Hiley Mazda in Hurst (Rich Longworth) was swift, smooth, and very accommodating.

Awesome Car

I did extensive research on this and its competition, as I needed something that would be comfortable and fun to drive. I came from a BMW X1, which had a number of mechanical issues along with some electrical ones too. Once my lease expired, I did not hesitate to get this car after having test driven the competition. + The feature content is astounding and puts its competition and luxury makers to shame - love the HID display, active safety features (blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, etc.) + One-touch illuminated windows that actually go all the way down + Readable navigation (I bought the SD card) I'm actually not a huge fan of Apple Car Play - I think it is over-rated. Plus the SD navigation shows in the HID when driving + Comfortable interior with exceptional design and attention to detail - especially the seats and dash + Fun to zip through the canyons and traffic + Great visibility Wish List Ambient lighting with color choices 8 speed automatic (more gears) Economy mode in addition to sport mode Auto-stop when at a light More power.... without loss of efficiency

Fun Half Baked Car

The car drives amazing, it has an athletic feel about it. I thought the car had plenty of power and the engine was smooth for the most part. When driving the car, you can tell the engineers spent time making the engine and transmission work well together. I thought the exterior of the car was stylish and the interior was pleasing to my eye. The seats are comfortable. I went from a “luxury” car and I would say they rivaled those seats. The Bose sound system sounded amazing to me, it was one of my favorite things. I don’t normally care for Bose car audio. The car sadly had numerous issues. The piano black plastic around the shifter would scratch ridiculously easy. The lens cover for the instrument cluster also had problems with scratching. My red leather seats faded in general, and the wear points practically turned to an off-white color. The black rims developed a light milky haze and tended to develop rock chips easily. The HUD developed a metallic vibration noise that was fixed by the dealership and developed again within a couple hundred miles. Numerous rattles developed in the dash of the car that seemed to be temperature dependent. There were consistent rattles in the door cards and the pillars where the seat belts mount to the car. I also had issues with the weather stripping tearing around the doors because of their design. The windshield would develop so much condensation that the car was virtually undrivable. I have never seen a car so prone to condensation on the windshield. I have had many cars over my 20 years of driving. The front doors also have issues with sticking closed and has never been resolved by the dealer. When I purchased my car the variable cylinder management (VCM) was undetectable. The car was recalled for a flash to change the way the VCM worked making it very noticeable. In certain instances, the engine would develop a vibration when the VCM kicked in. I think slight inclines and the VCM activation caused the engine to convulse. On rare occasions when engaging the cruise control the RPMS would fluctuate by 500 or so RPMS, causing the car to shudder to the point that the steering wheel would develop a visible vibration. I really loved the personality of the car. I thought it was a fun car. I really wished the car would have worked out. I couldn’t handle the symphony of problems, so I sold the car back to the dealership. I would have bought another Mazda in a heartbeat if this car wasn’t so half baked. I’m not overly picky, this car was a total sh*t show. I am used to car issues, my two other cars are Volkswagens.
