Bought this 98 Navigator in 2003 after looking for a Minivan. Initially thought the vehicle was too classy for an SUV. However other than replacing coils it has been fantastic. Usually the early models are lacking, but I feel with Lincoln they had something to prove and put all the quality into the 1998. We still have it with 138,000 on it now and love it..

This truck is performing at high standards and looks good.I still have the factory chrome wheels. If you keep the maintenance up it will last you for years to come. Some people think that they can just ride for years and not do the maintenance. Then when parts start going bad all at once, they say bad things about the navagator.

All I can say is that I've Never had any problems at all Only thing I've had Replaced were the Brakes which at the time I thought were to early but after talking to people they said 48000 miles wasn't that bad for a car this size.

My family has loved owning this Navigator, it is wonderful for Boy Scout campouts and long distance travel. We purchased this vehicle because our family is growing (6'5", 6'4", 5'11", & 5'10") and needed more leg and headroom and this was perfect. Aside from the obviously bad mpg (on all SUV's) and slightly underpowered acceleration (for a Lincoln, great compared to "normal" SUV's), this is a great, stable SUV. We own several Lincolns and will definitely continue to buy. The newer models seem to have corrected most of the imperfections found on the '98.

After all these years (7), the Navigator still gives me a feeling of fun and excitement to drive. The doors shut with a confident sound, and the massiveness and muscle make me feel in charge. It can pull stumps and deliver me to the Ball in the same day. I love this truck.

The 1998 Navigator went into production in June 1997. Mine was made in August of 1997 so it truly is one of the first made. The vehicle is 21 years old and has a few (very few) scratches and no dings or dents. The carpets (like almost everything else) are original and look new. The vehicle is NOT made for driving around the city and if you do, you will receive very poor mileage (like 12-14 MPG). Take this girl out on the highway and you will get 21-25 MPG which for a 7700-pound vehicle is incredible. This is not a sports car and needs some time to get up to cruising speed, but when it does, it is smooth as glass. Of special note: As large as she is, the vehicle has a very small turning radius. I have owned the vehicle since 2000 and with the exception of normal maintainance, the only bad luck (NOT Lincoln's fault) is that I am on my 3rd A/C compressor. I have only had 1 tune-up, 1 brake job, 2 sets of tires and that is about it. My Navigator has 99,000 miles, always garaged, has never seen snow and hopefully, it will be with me for another 20 years! **UPDATE** 2/21 It has been a few years since my review and the girl still purrs like a kitten. I had another brake job performed (2 in 21 years!!) and went through a spat of bad A/C compressors (7 to be exact), but the Ford service center took care of replacing them at no charge.

Never had a problem...

Just parted with our navigator - time to move on to something new - but we miss it already! Never had a mechanical problem with the car. The only problem we had was with the driver's seat breaking down in the left rear corner (closest to the door), and had to have it replaced.. tho the cusion seemed to break down again (caves in/slants). We were the 2nd owners - and would buy another one in a heartbeat - but not a new one.. preowned ONLY (they're too expensive). :)

What can I say, this truck is the most comfortable SUV on the market for a big man. I'm 6'7 and fit in like a glove. I bought it used with 17k miles, I put almost 40k in two years and changed the oil (mobile 1) every 5k, air filter, and front breaks/rotors which is normal.

Hmm? New minivan or used 'gator

Wow... Whole family loves this ride. Kids talked us into it (well, not much talking was needed) after testing the Surburban, Excursion and Yukon. No contest. I don't understand why anyone would buy a new one, but the used ones are finally affordable without the risk of massive depreciation when you drive it off the lot. The gas mileage is exceptable for what you get in return, and I rated it with that in mind. A well maintained used 'gator is worth a look before you rush out to buy a new mini van or suv, especially if you are concerned about getting the max vehicle for your hard earned $.

We had purchased a used 98 navigator and so far it drives so much fun. It takes off and have a lot of power. The downsides were the labor cost of this vehicle.

This vehicle comes equipped with the best factory seats I have ever experienced. Although the fuel economy is nothing to shout about and considering the weight and being a v8 truck advertised as an suv I am not disappointed in the mileage. Good sound system. Great ac and the quiet ride is a tremendous asset.

Many of the Ford engines built in 97 and 98 had a defect in the cylinder heads causing spark plugs to blow out. I have researched hundreds of cases. Ford will take no responsibility for it. Hence the owner is stuck with a $3000.00 - $5000.00 repair. I have owned Fords all my life. Never again!!!!

As I begin thining about moving up to a newer model, I hesitate to give up this solid truck with nice features and great towing capabilites. The ride is a bit on the truck side, but if you need a vehicle that can pull the boat with ease, inspire confidence on snow covered roads, and give you a comanding view of the road, this is a good choice. Fuel economy seems right in the ballpark for a vehicle of this type, averaging just over 15 mpg, but can get higher in freeway driving.

1998 Nav Still Going Strong - Smoothly

Had my grandpa up this week, and he still marvels at the look and drivability of my 98 Nav. I have enjoyed it from day 1. Of course gas prices were south of $1 when I first bought it, and I have been getting 15 MPG for as long as I have had it, so this is one of the drawbacks. When it is cleaned up, waxed, and wheels detailed, it is still quite an impressive vehicle.

Great Great Great Suv. I didn't know the truck handled that well until i bought it. definitely attracts a lot of attention. luxurious, well built, very very reliable, powerful. i just wrecked mine, and i'm shopping for another already. i can't afford an escalade, which might be slightly better, so it's Navi Navi all the way.

WE LOVE OUR NAVIGATOR- THE LOOK, THE ROOM & THE DRIVE. IT IS THE ULTIMATE AUTOMOBILE TO TRAVEL IN. I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ONE IN A HEARTBEAT. THE ONLY DOWNFALL IS THE MAINTENANCE COST - TIRES, LOW GAS MILEAGE & ANY MECHANICAL WORK.

We purchase this vehicle NEW in December 1997. This vehicle is still going strong. I have done nothing but regular maintenance during our ownership. We have over 200,000 miles. The Maaco paint (red) job has faded after 4 years. Maaco now wants about $2400 to paint it again. I paid about $1400 for their last quality paint job 5 years ago. I was happy with it. The interior seats are okay. The vehicle still is mechanically sound and runs smoothly. We looked at many of the 2022 and 2023 full size SUV's (Tahoe's, Yukons, Escalades, Navigators, and Wagoners). My wife and my grandchildren (tall 13 and 15 years of age) still easily fit in this vehicle. The dash board is cracking in several places. We still get about 10 miles a gallon in the city and 12 to 13 miles per gallon on the highway. The mechanic states, " Any item that can affect gas mileage is within tolerance". An oil leaked and oil part around the bottom of the engine was repair (about $1100) by a shop since my last review. I had the starter and starter relay since my last repair ($400). I had the back window vents power discontinued because the window vents would open and closed intermittently. This vehicle is not driven regularly. Every one or two weeks I drive it for about an hour. However, my wife would like a new vehicle because of all the new technology. I normally rent an SUV when we want to include my adult daughter and her luggage on a trip.

This is a great truck! We bought it when our first child was on the way because we thought it would be a good, safe family car. The oil light came on yesterday while driving on the highway, then the engine started making an awful sound as I was exiting, so I had it towed to the dealer. They say the engine is dead at 92,000 miles. This is a sad day for me deciding whether to buy a new engine or a new Navi.

I just bought my 98 Navigator!!! I am her third owner and she 179000 miles. Paid under 2000 for her. She was rancher truck, so her body shows scratches, and top has worn spots where hay attachments were. Over all she in credible awesome shape. She doesn’t have third row seat, I really didn’t need it. She came with huge truck tires, that took me a little getting used to when driving . Her front seats have tears, leather patches should fix those. She just had an engine overhaul replaced spark plugs, all fluids changed. Her old owners were smoker so burnt holes in carpets. Hoping save up get new carpets put in. Until then shampooed and elbow scrubbing to get smoke smell out. Everything works in her!!! I love is everything is a good distance away from me and controls are also on the steering wheel . Room, room and more room. I am impressed with her gas consumption. I can go almost week and half before refueling. Old dodge Durango I was filling up twice week. She built like a tank with steel doors and that plus for those crazy bad drivers out there. She has POWER and can be put in full 4 wheel drive by turn of switch in the panel. My son calls her “the pavement queen” !!! Can’t wait take her trip just see how she does on these mountains passes.
