Bought at 160k and doing great

I bought my 01 IS at 160k and have put over 15k miles over the past year. I have taken this thing on 400 mile road trips, through snow, etc. I haven't run into any repairs. I know the timing belt is due at 180k which will run at least $500 which I'm fine with due to it's extremely reliable track record. Drives super smooth, has amazing handling with tight steering- shocking for a 15 year old car with so many miles to handle so nice. If you are thinking about getting one go for it. Smaller back seat, cup holders are lame. Update October 2016. I still have this IS. Has 190k miles now. All I have been doing is oil changes, tires, etc. Did timing belt and water pump for around $700 but no major repairs needed which is great especially at the age of this car. I have noticed the brakes on this car click and clatter but I;ve been told it is normal and safe. plan to keep it around for a while even after I buy myself a truck.

IS300 Awesome, But Can Always Be Better

If you are looking for a fun and good looking vehicle, the IS300 should do it! It attracts a lot of attention. It seems as though all eyes are on the Lexus IS300, rather than the average BMW 3-Series, Mercedes Benz C- Class or Audi A4. 2001 models do not offer the 5 spd manual, DVD or auto-dimming rear view mirrors. If you can do without that, you're set.

I bought the car brand new. It was one of the first available in Southern California. The car now has about 202,000 miles on it, with regular service by the local dealership. The car has never had a single costly repair. There are no squeaks or rattles. Even with such high mileage, I wouldn't hesitate to jump in the car and drive cross country right now. This is truly a worry free car. I've owned cars from Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Saab, Ford, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Toyota, VW and Honda. This Lexus has been the best car I've EVER owned, bar none. Like a fine Swiss watch, it runs forever. And Lexus provides the best car buying experience anywhere in this galaxy.

I liked this car when it debuted in 2001, but couldn't afford it. Some 15 years later I decided to buy one for the fun of it and I love it. I bought an one owner car and have replaced/up-graded many parts (as expected), but I love still this car. It's powerful, quite, sleek and still gets lots of looks/positive comments. It was obviously well built, because the interior/body is in excellent condition (for it's age), plus the engine is adaptable (and much desired) and I really like the rear wheel drive.

I have liked the IS since it came out and was thrilled to be able to buy one 2 years ago. In two years, I have had no complaints, just a lot of compliments and a lot of fun. I'd rather have this car used for the 20,000 I bought it for than any new car on the road for the same price. I drive my cars pretty hard, and this has been one of my favorites..have had a Prelude, Maxima, and Probe GT, but the IS spanks em all. I do use the E shift alot, makes for a more fun driving experience, especially with the traction control off... it tends to kick in early sometimes, which is fine if I'm not having a little fun with the car. Great luxo-sport car, that acts like and even looks like a coupe.

Bought In '05 with 80,000 miles. It runs great and is lots of fun to drive. I get a lot of compliments on the style of the car. I drive it daily to work and get about 18 mpg and have driven the car to South Dakota and to Florida and if I kept the speed around 75 I got about 27 mpg. I can't complain about that. If I average closer to 85 it drops to 23. I don't mind the miles since it is a Lexus.

I bought my IS300 in July of 2005 and have had it for 3 years this month. It is great I love everything about the car, nothing has broken down on me. It had 69k on it when I bought it and now its 112k and still runs effortlessly. I have done a lot of modifications on it and they have all been great upgrades. I plan on trading this one in for a 2004 or 2005 with less miles so I can keep driving it for a long time. But everything about this car is great and a great value!

a great car for me, but maybe not quite right for you.... its a car for those who want that balance of fun-to-drive with reliability... a car to go to luch with business associates then release it on windy roads on the way home... it takes a bit of getting used to- it doesnt seem to feed back, but it never goes out of control... you learn it, and can push it to great limits... awesome slalom capabilities- compare slalom speeds- their porsche like... but i dont haul people in the back seat to often... its greatest drawback. second would be gas milage... it sucks fuel when you open it up...

I got married & was looking for a sedan to replace my Honda Prelude, but I didn't want to give up the quickness and great handling. The IS 300 weighs 300 lbs. more than the Prelude but certainly doesn't drive like it. I was not afraid to buy one with over 100,000 miles because my family has owned several Lexus models. They rarely need repairs. I had to replace a cracked wheel (previous owner abuse) and found $200 for a re-manufactured one much easier to swallow than $500 from Lexus. Someone installed metal brake pads and cheap Kuhmo tires. After switching to ceramic pads and Pirrelli P Zero tires, the car is back to it's surprising potential.

The car is fun to drive and no major problems. The service at the dealership is excellent but very expensive. I just spent $300 for service at 12000 miles. My daughter has a Cavalier with over 60,000 miles that we haven't spent $300 on with oil changes! The Chevy is a better car dollar for dollar! Also had to spend $$ for snow tires on the Lexus. The Chevy goes through anything.

I bought my IS 300 in June and have been driving it as my daily driver for 7 months now. So far the car has lived up to or exceeded all of my expectations. It's not going to out perform some of the new sports cars (G35, 330, etc.) but the IS 300 has what a lot of those cars lack. The Lexus name. Not saying I drive a Lexus I'm better than you but the Lexus name that says this car was quality built, reasonably priced and fun to drive. The 2JZ-GE engine is under powered compared to a lot of today's sports sedans but it is easily modified to be an unstoppable street machine. I highly recommend this car. You will not be disappointed.

I bought the IS300 after driving the BMW325i, Mecedes 240, and Audi A4. The Lexus had the best styling and most standard features, and on Road testing the best raod manners and supple yet firm suspension. The only thing I would like to see improved about this car is more power though the standing start take off was enough to shock my BMW driving friends ! I have never enjoyed drivin as much as in my IS.

Only 1 trip to the dealer for a plastic piece falling off under the car. The main problem I have had with this car, is that the transmission acts confused sometimes. Sometimes when you press the gas, nothing happens for a second! It's like the engine/transmission programming is wacked or something. I read a couple magazines that mention this also. WAKE UP LEXUS! Also, this car shared too many parts with the Corolla, just look at the steering wheel. Performance is not great, it's definitely no M3 by any means. For the price/performance, I'm going to look at one of the new Acuras, they are incredible. it go. But it has been a good car.

Not as tight as a BMW, but that's not the kind of car I wanted. Having owned Lexus' before, a few amenities are missing that I would have liked (programmed seats, arm rest) but I definitely live without and am happy. 15 months after the purchase and I'm amazed how much I like the car. Definitely a cross between a sports car and a luxury car,

Ended up leasing the IS and have had it 3 years and 33000 miles. Still on original tires and brakes. I have had it up to 148 MPH. Exterior and interior are stylish, the instrument cluster makes the interior. The low profiles cause the car to pull to the right every now and then. When stepping on the gas it will sometimes hesitate, has less low end power than expected. Once you hit about 110mph it kicks into O\D, simply incredible at high speeds. Handles beutifully, will pull 90 deg turns at 30+ mph with little back end swing around. Nice car, but planning on stepping up to the bmw 540i or a gs400.

No regrets other than not holding out for the manual transmission. with no upgrades 0-60 is 6.35 on mine, which edges out my friends stick M3 from 1999 by about a second. The best part is, it goes way faster than the Beemer, 165 MPH and the doors start opening up with vacuum pressure so i didnt try to go any faster. The A/C is automatic contrary to the editors beliefs and if anything feels like a corolla its the little twitchy German crap buttons on the M that require you to carry a set of pencils to press accurately.

So far this car have replaced driver side power window motor because when I pull the up position the window go up but it go back right away bring back to dealer for warranty repair. Last month I have to bring the car in to check front brake because when I go on freeway over 55mph and try top step on the brake a little and the steering have lot of vibration. Bring back to the dealer and they have to replace the front brake pad and rotor.

Being rear drive and very light this is the worst car I have ever had for snow/wet road driving. Even with the standard 16" tires the car would not move away from the curb in the first snowfall. I put Blizzaks on it and it is somewhat better but this vehicle is not recommended for northern climates. the TRACS system also sucks. It makes starting out on wet pavement 'chunky'. It also seems to have a hesitation on acceleration at times.

First impression from this sleek sports sedan is something I would never get from any other car. Great exterior design, flashy speedometer/tachometer, sporty shift nob and pedals help you cope with the size of available space. All options suit well with the outfit, just pick whatever suit you best. Service is excellent, acceptable maintenance cost, not as bad as BMW, but not as good as Toyota. Last time I went by the dealer, 2002 special edition looks so good I want to beat myself for not waiting for it. Bottomline: Best car for the price, find the right dealer that will give you services. Grab the key, and let's have some fun. -^_^-

18 months/15,000 miles; NO rattles or squeaks. Only problem: Driver's side door pin popped out a couple of times...the dealer replaced the hinge. No more trouble. The back seat is cramped, but since I rarely have passengers, it isn't an issue for me. I was looking for reliability and driving fun...within my budget. I found it. Even though the new car smell is gone, I am still taking the long way wherever I go. I just hate to stop driving it. It is a thirsty little beast, but it's hard to muster up any concern about it. The mileage for stop and go driving has been 19.6 miles a gallon. Nothing prettier than my fresh-washed, blue IS300...she still turns heads.

cons: interior materials are poor quality. My steering wheel leather started cracking after a couple months. THe oem tires were terrible and blew up on me. one blew up after a couple thousand miles. Another one blew up later on. The tire recall didn't help either since they killed the new tires which I bought to replace my old tires. My center console plastic started fading. pros: very solid car. great handling. bottom line: don't expect to be reimbursed for any parts that are built below standard. Be prepared to shell out quite a bit of money to fix little things like interior parts, paint chips, tires, and so on.

I bought this car in 2001 brand new and it has been an awesome car. It is fast and sporty while still having the luxury. It is a car that gets looks all over town and people remarking how nice it looks. The fuel economy is good for it being a sports car, but it does drink more than I expected. The engine is great, one that Toyota has been using for the past 20 years in other models like the Supra. I would highly recommend this car, it is a car that has class and will still run great in ten years due to the high quality Lexus has put into it.

With 29,000 miles on in 10 months, this is very reliable, drives like a sports car, & gets 22 mpg. Routine maint.is kind of high, but cust. ser. is the best around. Front seats are great, but the back is best left to children. The trunk is decent, but then I didn't buy this car for it's cargo capacity. I got it 'cause it's fast, handles great & looks awesome. I wish I had spent the extra few grand and bought a new 2002 with a 5-speed. I recommend this to anyone looking for a sports sedan that handles, is fast, gets good fuel mileage, & won't be in the shop all the time like a BMW.

I bought the IS used four months ago and must say I am completely satisfied. I moved up from a Miata and feared I might be sacrificing some of the superior hadling of the roadster in exchange for some additional interior/cargo space. I was wrong! The IS 300 handles wonderfully with the 17" wheels. The torque of the inline 6 is unbelievable. Dealer service has been excellent. The downside to the 2001, is the lack of a front armrest and no folding backseat.

I purchased my IS300 used with 22K miles, about 6 months ago and so far I've havent had any problems with it. I used to drive a Honda Prelude with massive modifications so the IS cannot compare to that car. Off the line the IS is slooooow but the V6 will catch up to any other car. I really wish it had a center arm rest, that would help alot. Also bigger cup holders. Forget about getting Big Gulps from 7- 11. I considered a BMW 3 series but read awful ratings about it. Im glad I chose the IS300 over the 3-series. Fin!

I've owned my is300 for about one year, and I have to say I continue to be impressed with both the cars' performance ability and its quality. This is a terrific handling car with very good grip and steeribilty thru the tightest of corners;it's powerful and smooth inline 6(same engine as newer Supra) is a joy both for its great performance and every day driving characteristics.

Great vehicle! Fun car in the mountains and an even better ride zipping through rush-hour traffic

This is my third lexus; had an ES300 then went to the GS400 -- AWESOME!!, and now stepped down to the IS300 because I wanted a stiffer, smaller car. It's been EXCELLENT and with it's track record, i'd recommend nothing else in the price range (except for an older GS -- i love them.)

This is a really super car for a 1st year. The swade-ish leather interior is a good feature because it is never too hot or too cold. It is fun to drive and handles real well (except for traction control...which I always turn off). The only downsides are bad fuel mileage, no center armrest to speak of, and no telescopic steering.

I was pleasantly surprised at the handling and yet comfortable quietness of this car. Quality built. Only complaint is the low profile tires which costs twice as much for half the miles, but a great look.
