Competing with the best small luxury sport sedans from Europe, the 2022 Lexus IS 350 doesn't look, feel or drive like it's based on the car's last redesign that happened way back in 2014. That's largely due to a major update for the 2021 model year when Lexus restyled the exterior, tightened up the handling, made the infotainment system easier to use, and upgraded the safety features.

There are still some legacy elements that belie the car's age. One of them is its 311-horsepower V6 engine, which is underpowered compared to most of the upgraded six-cylinder engines found on rival sedans. BMW's M340i version of the 3 Series, for instance, makes 382 hp plus considerably more torque. But on the whole there's a lot to like about the 2022 IS 350. Performance

How does the IS 350 drive? The Lexus IS 350 F Sport is a fun and nimble sport sedan that's let down by an underpowered engine. In Edmunds' testing, our rear-wheel-drive test car accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. That's well off the pace of the class leaders, even the base four-cylinder variants. On the upside, this naturally aspirated V6 is silky smooth and builds power evenly from idle to redline. The transmission shifts gears a lot, but at least it's quick and smooth doing it.

The IS' steering, brakes and overall handling are much more impressive than the engine. This luxury sedan is athletic and nimble, with responsive steering and a suspension that's firm enough to keep the car planted without feeling so stiff that midcorner bumps unsettle it. Our test vehicle included the optional adaptive suspension and limited-slip differential, both must-have options if you want to maximize the sportiness of your IS 350.

Comfort

How comfortable is the IS 350? The IS 350's optional adaptive suspension is well tuned. You feel the road, but it won't beat you up. Comfort is bolstered further by the seats. Adjustment is limited, but the basic shape is so good that you settle in quickly. The climate control as well as the heated and ventilated seats all work well to keep you comfortable, though the temperature adjustment slider is more cumbersome than necessary. It's quiet too, though the F Sport's optional summer tires produce a bit more noise than we expect from a Lexus.

Interior

How’s the interior? The interior might look similar to last year's model, but there have been a handful of updates, most notably to the infotainment system. The much-maligned touchpad is still present, but you can avoid it completely by using the touchscreen. The user interface is generally the same, but it's much easier to navigate through the on-screen menus. Thankfully, Lexus has left the physical controls for the climate and media systems intact.

That carryover interior has some downsides. The driving position is excellent, with decent all-around visibility and easy-to-reach controls, but the back seat remains one of the smallest in the class. Getting in and out is a squeeze as well for adults, and passengers approaching 6 feet tall will feel cramped.

Technology

How’s the tech? The infotainment system now uses a touchscreen interface, so controlling features such as the audio, navigation or standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is relatively simple. The IS features voice commands, too, though they're limited compared to some rival systems.

The IS comes with a suite of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is standard too. That's a good lineup of features, but their operation lacks the polish of the class leaders. For example, the adaptive cruise is slow to respond and leaves large gaps between you and the car in front.

Storage

How’s the storage? The IS 350's 10.8-cubic-foot trunk is near the bottom of the class for volume, though the space is wide and tall, making it more usable than the cargo areas in some rival sedans with superior on-paper specs. The rear seats fold in a 60/40 split, so you can expand the space further if you don't need the rear seats. Storage inside the cabin is really lacking. There's no good place to set your phone or sunglasses aside from under the armrest.

The tight rear seat hurts when it comes to car seats too. There's not much space to move around when you anchor a seat in, and larger rear-facing seats will likely force front passengers to scoot forward.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The rear-wheel-drive Lexus IS 350 F Sport, which is what we tested, gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That's better than most rivals with six-cylinder engines. The IS 350's rating drops to 22 mpg with all-wheel drive.

Is the IS 350 a good value? The Lexus IS 350 offers a lot of features at a relatively affordable price. There are a few buttons and controls inside that feel a bit cut-rate, but most of the car is solidly constructed. It's slower than most of the competition, but the V6-powered IS 350 is significantly less costly than other six-cylinder small luxury sedans.

Lexus' warranty and ownership experience are slightly above average too. Lexus includes a four-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, and the powertrain gets a small improvement with six years/70,000 miles of coverage. If you do get stuck, the IS 350 comes with four years of roadside assistance. The first year of maintenance is also included.

Wildcard

The IS 350 F Sport has a distinct Japanese flair that helps it stand out in a crowd. The grille is still divisive, but we think it works well with the other design updates to the car's front and rear. The F Sport’s styling does enough to give the IS 350 some purpose without looking gaudy or overwrought. The interior, too, features a design that you won't find on anything coming out of Germany.

The design is backed by a generally fun-to-drive nature. Yes, it's slower than most rivals, but the IS 350 is pretty enjoyable on a winding road where raw horsepower is less of a factor.

2022 Lexus IS 350 F SPORT 4dr Sedan AWD (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

My arctic white 2022 Lexus IS35 0AWD – Miles, arrived 3 months ago with 6 miles on it and is garaged since then. It had not seen snow or rain. Upon arrival, coat of Ardex Nano sealant and Ardex Topaz was applied to the body and wheels. On the outside, all windows were treated with Chemical Guys InstaWax Carnauba shine spray. All tires got moisturizing treatment with Ardex New Concept … and same was applied to all interior plastics and engine bay covers. I am car enthusiast and enjoying pampering my cars. I also believe that keeping cars in pristine shapes adds to the experience of ownership. I have to say that I truly love the simplicity of AWD and V6 that is matched with conservative 6 speed automatic. I purposely wanted the car that does not use super charging and obscene amount of gears in transmission. I learned that the same engine and transmission (with some slight modification) is used in Toyota Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, as well as others. That speaks volume about potential future reliability and success of design. From the get go – this is not a sport car and should not be treated as such! Many reviewers complains about lackluster acceleration and understeering on race tracks. To give you some background - I used to own Lexus UX250h, Acura TL, Audi Q3, BMW M340iX and Dodge Challenger V8 6.4L ScatPack, as well as Lexus NX (still have it as a family car). 90% of my driving is in the city – to and from work to the average of 20 miles a day. All my cars are being garaged. I am strictly following, stated in the manual, proper break-in for engine, transmission and brakes. Car does not see higher than 2000 RPM, aggressive cornering, or heavy brake usage. I start slow, working with transmission. I did not exceed 60MPH speed yet. As of today, I have 389 miles on IS and average fuel consumption at 24MPG. It is impressive, especially considering that Lexus predicts 19MPG in their tests in the city. Having car in the 60F garage, helps the initial engine warm up increasing MPG. I really enjoy how smooth the transmission operates and how well it is integrated with the motor unit. Driving in the city is simply enjoyable and relaxing. Driver seat is super comfortable and supportive. The AWD “hump” does not bother me at all and I use it to support my leg. I am 6’ and 220Ib and have no problem getting in and out of the car. I have enough headroom and legroom to enjoy extensive driving. Cabin is very well damped and isolated from the road noise. Nothing inside rattles or make strange noises (Acura). I like the fact that car has CD player – not many people realize that satellite radio is heavily compressed (MP3 – like) and does not really show the sounds system potential. Load your favorite album on CD and prepare to be surprised. I really wish I got Mark Levinson sound system upgrade but it was not available at the time of purchase. I am an audiophile. Ride is not very soft but not too stiff – honestly, I think it suits my taste perfectly. I am not very concern with room in the back because nobody drives there – this is my car to work. Yes, it is tight there but I would never recommend IS as a family car. For this we have 2021 NX300. I would say Lexus IS is a conservative, very reliable and proven design that speaks to small crowd of people. It is simply divine looking and I would not trade it for any European design. Nothing about IS will wow you initially like let’s say BMW M340i – but once you begin to use it, you will learn to love it. It’s a gentle giant with attitude - that’s why we named him Miles, after trumpeter Miles Davis. I have professionally tinted windows with 20% Xpel XR Plus film that rejects 98% heat and 99%UV. This provides privacy and protection from harmful UV light as well as it keeps interior cool (when used together with WeatherTech windshield sunshade). This is the car to buy and keep. 20 years from now, if well, maintained, it will still look great. Toyota service prices for Lexus. You don’t have to spend $300 for oil change (Audi, BMW) and deal with major reliability issues down the road (all Europeans). Oil Change for IS is $135 at Local Lexus dealer. All cars these days steer towards technology while Lexus takes more conservative approach. This car is for those customers who appreciate that fact.

2022 Lexus IS 350 F SPORT 4dr Sedan AWD (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

This car is a beast, yet, comfortable as can be. The interior is impeccable, fantastic handling, the backseat is roomy for small sport sedan and the 350 F isn’t bad on gas at all. Every time we go out to drive it feels like an event.
