We are Soul People

My wife first had a 2010 Soul and traded it on a new new 2012 VW Beetle. We traded that in a year later on a 2014 Soul ! for her and one for me. We really liked those cars but are always looking at others. Traded them in on 2 Chevy Trax, the top model. Then about a year and half went back to to the Souls. One for each of us and we are not going to change. Easy in and out, more elbow room than the Trax and more storage room. Love and use the under floor storage in the back. Don't feel cramped in the seats which are very comfortable. Our trip via car to Las Vegas from Minnesota was very nice. The 200 hp engine in the ! was not taxed by the Rockies. No extreme down-shifting when going up the mountains. Carried all our luggage (and we have a lot because we are gone for 10 days and all our electronics, pills and food. The touch screen radio and navigation and climate controls are easy to use (we are 68 and 70 years old.) Gas mileage around town is consistently 24 to 25 MPG and highway runs 31 or so. Most of the Souls we see on the road or in town are driven by older people who need easy in and out and all the other features.

This car has most of the things I wanted in a vehicle all put into one. I had been searching and test drove quite a few vehicles and walked away from each disappointed about something. That was not the case with this one. The ride is smooth and the EXCLAIM is very quick. I used to drive a smaller hatchback and got tired of having essentially fall into my car. With the soul, the seats are at waist height and I quite literally just walk into my seat. Just yesterday, I took a friend out in it who owns a truck and he mentioned this very thing. He was saying he has to climb up into his truck and loves that you can just walk into the seat. I said the same thing regarding my golf (as you just read). I also got the Tech Package and I am very pleased with the sound system. It is superb. Definitely not a miss there. The audio controls actually make sense and is very easy to navigate. I test drove some cars that were just way too complicated (looking at you Honda). We don't want complicated while we're driving. I want to push 2 buttons max to get where I want and do what I want. The fuel economy is actually lower than advertised, and that's kind of a bummer. I drive mostly (that's 90%) interstate and am lucky if I break 28 overall. The A/C unit is not what I'd call amazing. There are definitely better A/C units out there. Other than that... very comfortable. Drives great. Turns on a dime (better than my Hatchback did, but the hatchback handled like a dream... cuz it's a hatchback). I am not at all disappointed and would highly recommend it. Also, Kia's warranty kind of tells a story of a company who's not afraid to offer a high warranty because they have faith in their product. Seriously, their warranty is twice as good as anyone else's. Highly recommended.

Not too big, not too small. Easy to drive and park. Responsive engine. Entertainment center is good with a small but functional touch screen. Good value for the money. Update:. We don't drive it alot. So far we are very happy. Update:. We drive mostly local and less than 8k miles. Been a great car. May 2021: Still a great car. We've driven less than 9k miles. Very convenient for commutes and local trips. Now up to 17k miles. So far so good.

Update #6: I still really love this car & have drove it for 5.5 years. It's clean and well-maintained and I was hoping to keep it another 50,000 miles or more, but I am now having to reconsider. It has 97,500 miles and it is burning a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. I called my local Kia dealership and they said this is "acceptable" and I would have to pay out-of-pocket for an oil consumption test as I bought it used and am not covered by the original warranty. I am concerned about worsening oil consumption and, most of all, catastrophic engine failure. My car is included in the extended warranty that came from the lawsuit but I'm not sure what that really means. Other maintenance notes: the left rear wheel speed sensor has failed and it needs new rear shocks. Otherwise it is still trucking along really well. If it weren't for the oil consumption problem and my concerns about the engine I'd be very happy. I am not longer sure about keeping this car or buying another Kia, which is unfortunate as I was really happy with this car. Update #5: Great car. The only repair I've had to make that wasn't routine was the right rear speed sensor. Otherwise it's just been oil changes, tires, brakes, etc. Kia provided the two recommended complimentary software updates & also sent me a free wheel lock (due to the theft problem). My car has started to burn/leak oil so I do need to monitor and top it off between oil changes, but it has 90,000 miles so that is understandable. Other than that, it continues to run well & be reliable, and the exterior/interior holds up well and still looks nice. The electronics (stereo, backup camera, climate controls, window/mirror controls) all work fine. I still enjoy driving my trusty little SUV and hope to keep it for at least several more years. Update #4: It's January 2023 and I've now owned my Kia Soul for 4.5 years. It's a fantastic car that I still enjoy driving. No problems. Reliable, fun, functional. I'm so happy with my car and plan to keep it for years to come. Update #3: Still love my car. No issues. It runs great and gets me where I need to go. Update #2: I've had my car for almost two years now and nothing has changed. I love this car! No problems–it runs great & is very reliable. I still feel inspired to keep it clean & tidy, and get excited to drive it around. It's such a fun car–comfy & maneuverable. It is also perfect for my outdoor activities; it's easy to strap my bike rack on/off the rear hatch, and easy to load my 14' and 16' kayaks on the rooftop crossbars. Again, the only improvements I would suggest are better gas mileage and better stereo (that will auto-resume play to your bluetooth device, i.e. cell phone). But all in all I absolutely love this car and highly recommend it. UPDATE #1: I've had my car for almost a year and I still love it! It's so fun to drive–it's comfortable and handles deftly. People who ride with me are often pleasantly surprised at how roomy & comfortable it feels on the inside, including my dad who is 6'2". I use it for commuting to work and transporting my bicycle & 16' kayak with no problems. It's got just the right amount of space and no excess, with good gas mileage. Everything still works great. My only small gripe is that the bluetooth stereo doesn't auto-resume play when I restart the car. Otherwise it's perfect and I'm probably a Kia Soul owner for life. ORIGINAL REVIEW I bought my 2017 Kia Soul (+) about three weeks ago, so I'm still a new owner. It's my first one, and so far I love it. If it proves to be reliable over time, I will probably drive a Kia Soul forever. It is the perfect car for my needs: I'm single & only occasionally have passengers, so I don't need a huge car, but I'm also active and sometimes need to pack my car up with camping gear & strap my 16' kayak on top. The back seats are roomy for when I do have passengers (the car has plenty of head clearance for tall people). I live in the south so I don't need AWD. I love how easy the Soul is to maneuver (it turns on a dime) and to drive; it handles very well, to the point that I often feel comfortable enough to steer one-handed. It seems compact from the outside, but inside it feels very roomy. The backup camera is great, and I was pleasantly surprised at how wide the view is. The hatch is convenient, and with the seats down there's plenty of room for gear or a bicycle. I'm not an extravagant person, so I enjoy that this car has character and is cute, but is also utilitarian, without a ginormous touchscreen and over-the-top bells & whistles all over the dash. Another surprise: the driver seat is SUPER comfortable. I have lower back pain on longer car trips, but the seats are comfy and have great lumbar support. There are a few things I would improve: the MPG is lower than I'd like (~26 overall) and sometimes I feel as though I have to gun it a bit to get the car to accelerate appropriately. However, I knew both of these things were criticisms going in (mine is not turbo-charged) and I can live with both, easily. I will also probably upgrade the speakers eventually–I'm a music lover & audio snob, and the base-factory speakers are just adequate (but will probably suffice for plenty of people). Otherwise, I'm in love! *fingers crossed* that I have many happy years with my new Soul.

My first Kia

I have a three year lease on a 2017 Soul. I have owned the vehicle for just a few weeks now. In that time I have made the following observations. It is important to keep in mind that this is a base vehicle. I see it filling a niche was owned by the VW Bug, with technology and comfort. My 1.6 130 hp with an automatic transmission is plenty of motor for this car. The mileage is amazing and I love all the technology that tells me about my consumption and range. I find that I drive a bit slower in this vehicle for some reason. Getting in and out are important to me and this is done with ease. I wish the front seat had a few more adjustments but it is fairly comfortable. The Soul is easy to drive and the ergonomics are good. The technology is easy to understand and use for an older driver like me, love the Bluetooth.. This vehicle is easy to park and navigate well in tighter areas. The one real knock on the Soul is that its smaller windows create very dangerous blind spots. If you don't have a warning system and I don't, the passenger side has a huge driver's blind spot. The drivers side is also bad but not as bad. Overall I am delighted with my KIA Soul.

Engine failure at 69,000 miles. Plenty of documented evidence from other owners to support this claim. Please read about engine failure in the 2.0/2.4 Hyundai/Kia product line if you're a 2.0 Soul owner.

You get a lot for your money: Lots of leg room and head room, lots of quality and lots of compliments, but compared to the cargo space of my old Honda Element, it is lacking. The car handles great and the 2 liter engine has enough power, although there's a lot of downshifting in cruise control. Sits high to see the road ahead and a back-up camera to help park in tight spaces. Overall, I love this car and would recommend it highly.

I'm a Soul Man; and YOU will be too!!

I work for a major car rental firm, have previously driven the Soul+ many occasions, and worked for car dealers for five years. I have drive HUNDREDS of cars, many weekly to and from the airport destinations. There is no car I more highly recommend to clients than the Kia Soul for overall VALUE for your dollar, comfortable seats, massive storage cabin, and versatile capability. Millions of owners agree, which is why Kia Soul has earned the public support to make Soul the #1 selling Kia vehicle. The 2018 Kia Soul ranked #1 in Compact Cars. It has earned respect and accolades every year and ever since it first hit the market. Consumer Reports states it is ne of the few to be known as the most reliable vehicle on the road today. It is affordable, fun to drive, and popular with all age groups. Insurance safety score is based on the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash test ratings and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety ratings safety ratings have declared the Soul one of the safest vehicles on four wheels. The one single thing about the Soul that I like is that it brings pleasure to so many. I have often chatted with owners to find them delighted with their vehicle and willing to share their recommended joy.

I now own two Kia Souls - The first one (2013) was so impressive in build quality I bought a second upon reading the 2017 reviews. When Car and Driver and Road and Track give a 4.5 out of 5 stars - one pays attention. The 2017 I own Is simply amazing in build quality, ride handling and amenities ...... No comparison out there especially considering price.

Good value, decent mileage

I get decent mileage but the MPG estimate on the dash consistently over-estimates by 5-10% (versus actual miles driven at each fill-up). The Bluetooth button on the 2017 model is actually a Siri button, so if you don't have an iPhone, it does absolutely nothing. Hands-free on an Android is limited to only answering an incoming call or calling the last phone number in your history.

This is a really great car for the price point. Remember that this is an entry level economy car. Keeping that criteria in mind and you will not find a better value considering the 10 year warranty. No other manufacturer is standing by that long to keep your car running tops. The one issue I have found is that the fuel mileage is not as good as it should be for a 1.6L 4cyl. Mine is the 6 speed automatic and I average 27-30 mpg with a mix of driving. If you drive really easy and with great care, you can get the average up to 30-33 mpg. That is a lot less than is shown on the sticker. I can still say that it is very nice car for running around town and will hold quite a bit of storage when the seats are folded down. No regrets on this little car so far. I have 40k on it and it is still going great.

Pleasantly surprised with this little hatch back suv. Traded in my 2004 Dodge Ram ( which I’ll miss but not the fuel mpg ) for the 2017 Kia soul with everything in it. panoramic sunroof. heated seats, heated steering wheel, navigation back, up camera, Harmon Kardon sound( Awesome). this little thing is quick and torquey with its turbo! and spacious ( I’m 6,2 and fit extremely comfortable in it. It’s also great on fuel ( not sure why others complain about fuel economy try fueling a Dodge Ram. Lol) long story short, I find the Kia Soul fun, exciting to drive and cool. Kia has done a wonderful job. Plus I can still get a hitch and light trailer and haul my motorcycles when I need to. Tiny car with big SOUL POWER!!!!

Blown engine at 69,000 miles

Please read this.., 11/01/2020
2017 Kia Soul + 4dr Wagon (2.0L 4cyl 6A)
17 of 20 people found this review helpful

Until October of 2020 the only complaint I had was it was bad to hydroplane. That changed within an hour. Driving along I hear a ticking sound. No lights came on, no pressure problems. We pull over to check things out and no oil.. we religiously do oil changes and there was no need to question the souls quality. We put in oil and half an hour later our car went from being worth around $11,000 to $500. The best part is, the warranty was for 60,000 miles. The mileage it had was just over 69,000 miles. Come to find out this is common..! Apparently there is manufacturing debris (FOD) that gets caught in the oil line and clogs so by the time you hear anything it’s too late. Your engine has been starved. Long story short (hefty loan still owed, bank approvals, no options) I’m stuck with another Kia I do not trust. Please do your research before committing to pouring your hard earned money into a Kia Soul. I’m currently worried about any Kia at this point.

I drove a brand new Mini Countryman All4 S - fully loaded - a courtesy vehicle for my Mini Cooper Convertible. Shortly after I test drove the Kia Soul and thought the Kia was equal in so many ways to a car that listed for almost double the price! The quality of the Kia is outstanding and if the reports of reliability are true, the anticipated repairs and headaches will be minimal. The passive/active safety features are amazing. Blind spot detection, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control are all first rate and easy to use. Instrumentation is clean and logical - easy to use and not intimidating. Apple Car Play is fabulous! The full front to back sunroof is a joy. Ride comfort is solid, incredibly quiet and road feel is perfect. LED lighting provides clarity better than I've ever experienced. Performance is adequate and in sport mode better than average. Gas mileage is a bit disappointing for a car of this size and the range could be better (small tank). Overall, this is a great value and a quirky look that's fun. Definitely a design you either love or hate.

Nice car. Decent acceleration with the 2.0, which doesnt consume oil. Panoramic sunroof, infinity audio, and heated/cooled seats are really nice for entry level car, especially when getting the options on a used car. Better fuel economy than expected, especially when driving 35-50 mph. Cons include noise at interstate speeds, ride a little rough on bumps, speakers could be fuller at bass end, and high depreciation rate. As an aside, I was unimpressed with a 2020 soul with turbo on test drive. Didn't like the auto trans. Also didn't like that power rating for the 2.0 engine dropped significantly for 2020. Would buy another Soul in future, if used, low miles, pre 2020, and in warranty. 10/22/2020 Update Still running strong. Had to replace two wheel sensors under warranty. Faulty sensor did once cause vehicle to slow to a crawl in a turn, which was alarming. Otherwise, am still happy.

Like it, but don't love it

I have had this car for two weeks. I mostly like it, but it is frustrating in two respects. First of all, all the reviews complaining about gas mileage are true. I was expecting it, but I am a bit shocked by how bad it is compared to the EPA estimates of 25/27/30. I'm not getting anything close to that. I got gas this afternoon (7/11/20) and for the previous tank I had gotten 22.47 miles per gallon in mixed driving. My commute is about 60% interstate, though adding in other driving around town, it probably works out to 50/50 interstate and city driving. While that is frustrating to me, it's much better than the ~15.5 I was getting in the 2003 Honda Pilot I had previously. The second thing that bugs me is the get up and go is a bit lacking. I realize it's a 4 cylinder, so I'm not expecting something amazing. But there are times coming from a red light or stop sign that it doesn't seem to shift gears and get going. Most of the time it's not bad, sometimes it lags badly though. Also, living in the hills of north Georgia is a bit annoying, it can lag a bit going up hills. In general it drives well. Seems to be pretty quiet. The interior is nothing special, but I it's decent. Still looks new even though it's 3 1/2 years old. I like the stereo, and I'm loving finally having a rearview camera. The cargo area is small, especially compared to the Pilot that I had, which of course was about two feet longer. I like the cool tray under the cargo area and above the spare tire well. Divided into thirds, probably six inches deep. That's a pretty cool idea, good for keeping things such as window cleaner, Rain-X, etc. Overall I enjoy the car. It's nothing fancy, and the gas mileage is a bit ridiculous for a small car like this, but overall it's a good car. Definitely a good car for someone with limited funds. Update: 14 Jan 21-- I'm still liking the car, but the gas mileage still drives me nuts. I get under 22 mpg on some tanks. However on long highway trips I get around 29, so not too bad. One other annoying thing that the panic button is entirely too easy to push when it's in my pocket. It shouldn't be that easy to press when I lean the wrong way. But overall, I still like the car.

had a 2012 soul and traded in for a 2017 model. Not many changes between the years, except 2017 does not come with a cd player standard. Still no spare tire. new car has the nitrogen filled tires. I like the car for the handling, and overall comfort. but its overpriced.

Do you think a 3 yr old vehicle should need 4 wheel brake pads and rotors replaced at less than 19000 miles??? I don’t but apparently Kia thinks this is normal. I purchased this car new thinking that Kia had overcome its reputation for poor quality. I have now learned the hard way that this is not true.

2017 kia soul 65,000 mile engine needs replaced. Only 4 yrs old, well maintained. With no warning engine stalls, I was on freeway. Now after research, I find this happens a lot and no recall has been issued. So plan on buying another engine yourself. 10/26/2021

Absolutely loved my soul. One of the best running cars I have ever had until it stopped running. At 66,000 miles the engine destroyed itself with absolutely no warning and left me stranded 60 miles from home. Unfortunately due to this I will never purchase another Kia vehicle.

A Soul + at a Soul ! price

2017 Kia Soul ! 4dr Wagon (1.6L 4cyl Turbo 7AM)

I've always liked the Kia Souls but never got one because I felt they were under powered. Enter the 2017 Kia Soul ! and its 1.6L turbo engine. The engine isn't the problem with this car. The problem is that it is only available on the Exclaim model and the Exclaim has added and subtracted a few things. They've added a red strip that goes around the bottom of the exterior and gave the interior Leather/cloth seats with orange stitching. They didn't make the Soul a race car by any means, they just added an engine that gave it enough power not to feel like you had to floor it everywhere you went. So why would they make it like a kids toy and add stupid little things like that? On to the list of things that are gone. The front cooled seats are no longer an option and the heated front seats are still there but now only have 2 heat settings instead of 3. Those items are still available on the Soul +. So instead of getting the Soul ! that used to be the top trim level you're getting a Soul ! that isn't even fully loaded. Still, it is a great car Kia just needs to figure out their color schemes and option availability.

Have had my car since 2017. Taken it on a 4000 round trip, and drive about 150 miles per day. The seats are pretty comfy, I’m over 6’5 and have almost no complaints. I have a 2 year old and his car seat does fit snug, but that is expected for any car that isn’t an SUV. Handles like an SUV but has some sport to it. Fuel usage is my biggest issue. Go anything over 60 mph and expect for mpg to drop drastically. You really have to baby the gas peddle to get anywhere near 30. I also drive an Altima and get 35 mpg, for comparison. Safety features are not the best, but if you want just a car without all the extras you shouldn’t mind. Love mine and hoping to trade it in for a new 2020.

I recently bought a lightly used 2017 Soul EX Tech, which is the fully loaded Canadian model (but without the turbo engine). I also looked at small SUVs like the Toyota Rav4, the Honda HR-V, Kia Sportage, BMW X1 & the Mini Countryman. The Soul is more compact on the outside the any of these, but still feels as roomy on the inside. The panoramic sunroof is a really nice feature - especially in the winter - making the car feel bright & spacious, even in the back seats. Full range of electronic options: heated steering wheel, heated & cooled front seats, heated rear seats, Harmon Kardon stereo system, large GPS/ multi-function screen, blind spot monitoring, lane assist etc. The BMW & Mini did not have have some of these in a car costing $10,000 - $15,000 more. Performance is adequate, seating is firm, but comfortable, visibility is superb, gas mileage not great, but acceptable, cargo space is good for such a small vehicle. Recommended for anyone looking for a versatile, well-equipped, functional, roomy & distinctive small vehicle.

I bought the plus model and I got to say it’s a great little car. However, I really wanted some of the other features I was looking for which it didn’t have. Also the gas mileage is bad for its class but overall it’s a good car to have. Everywhere I go I get great feedback for mines. So I can’t be mad really. Just wish the gas would be a little bit better.

Was a great vehicle, fun to drive, until I hit about 80,000 and the engine catastrophically failed for no apparent reason. Highly don’t recommend unless you want to be stranded without a vehicle. I would give it and Kia 0 stars if I could. They don’t deserve 1. Please research before you buy a Kia or a Hyundai. This isn’t a one off thing. Thousands of people are in the same boat as I am.

I've had my 2017 Kia Soul+ for five years now. I bought it used from a rental car agency with 30k, now it's got almost 95k. The engine uses about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. Kia says anything under one quart per 1000 miles is "normal." It's unacceptable, but at this point I'm inclined to watch the oil & drive this thing until it breaks. I'd never buy another Kia, the engines are nowhere near Honda or Toyota levels of build & quality.

I liked my 2017 (new) Soul but it had a bad smell which the service department could not remedy. They would just spray deodorizer on the car and soon it would stink again. They had theories...maybe a dead rat had got inside? But were too busy to remedy the problem and I got rid of the vehicle after only a few months. This was in Santa Rosa CA.

The Soul is pandering to the tastes of a too young crowd. A great many people buying Souls are middle aged and older of which I am one. As an older buyer I want more color choices both interior and exterior, the option of leather seats in brown and saddle tan, all exterior paints metallic, option of a disc player. I don't like "packages", I want to choose every option. Because I live in snow country, I want all wheel drive. The all black interiors are a turn off for me....they show every speck of lint and dirt. What I love about the Soul is the name, the exterior looks, visibility, safety features, available options in the Plus model. I'm at the age where I want a bit of luxury. One more thing, I don't like my cars to sit too low to the ground. I didn't buy the Soul because the dealership was trying to sell me a car that had been sitting on the lot for over a year at the brand new price and that was never going to happen. The insurance was also higher than I wanted to pay but I realize it was because it was a new vehicle with all those electronic features that I would never use. Power seats are a must as well as heated. There are many things and options for a Soul plus that I really love but ultimately it was the cost that was the undoing of the deal for me. I ended up buying a Buick Encore Premium '13 year. I love the luxury features and the brown and tan leather interior combined with the metallic black exterior paint. The cabin is quieter.

I recently bought a 2017 KIA Soul and am so happy with it. I was surprised how much room is in it especially in the back when the seats are down. I am always moving things and this will fit lots of things in the back. I really enjoy zipping around town in my KIA. It rides smoothly and I feel like I am driving a race car. The radio sounds great and the seats are comfortable. My son likes the look of it too. I will definitely be recommending this car to my friends and family!

Avoid: it burns oil; breaks down; runs badly. Although Kia knows this they have disallowed by claims, ones fulfilled at a Kia garage, on the class action suit which covers a wide range of problematic Kia cars. Run, don’t walk, to another dealer!

I am writing about a 2017 Soul. It is in the shop again for the second transmission failure. It has 45,000 miles on it and is seven years old. The paint started falling off about two months ago and the dealer told me oh well, cheap paint. They also told me that the 10 year 100,000 warranty is a fraud it is in fact 5 year 50,000. Even though my car only has 45,000 miles on it the warranty is no good after five years. Very disappointed. Up to now I have loved the car.
