Used 1999 Limited Grand
Great value SUV. Brought it used in 03,a local lady had owned it. Perfect condition and paid 2/5 of original cost, with 60k mileage. A bit boxy, stiff ride, some drive train noise comes through in the 1999 edition. Great in the Wyoming winters, outdoors, off-road. Nice highway use, but still an SUV in terms of a highway feel. We put Waag grill/tail light guards on it and it looks tough. Great package for the money!
good truck
I purchased this suv with 75,000 miles on it and I have no regrets its been very well a few minor problems gas line leak at 120,000 mi crankcase sensor bad at 125,000 trans sensor at 115,000 it runs very well

overall good vehicle
Fun to drive, extremely reliable, good looking SUV. Had problems with the brakes warping every 12000 miles.
2001 Gran Cherokee Laredo a class act
What I expect after owning a 93 Gran Cherokee Laredo. It's still the best styled of all the SUV's out there. No real complaints about the interior. The ride is a huge improvement over the 1993. AC Compressor froze with about 16,000 miles on the car, dealer replaced under warrenty with no problem. 4.0 litre 6.
Not what I expected
I purchased my Jeep last January. After owning the Jeep for 11 months I am in the process of looking for another Ford. Wheel bearings are gone, howling from either a idler pulley or alternator ($250 for a rebuilt), transmission slipping terribly when it get below 40 degrees F, fogging headlight, leaking tailgate at both the window and gate seal, squeaks and rattles. I have 91K on it now and purchased it with 71K. I have no faith in this vehicle. If you are considering one, get rid of it before 100K. Friend that works for Chrysler said allmost all Jeep Grands need a tranny rebuild then. Wish I had known, my first and last Damlier Chrysler vehicle.
Great Vehicle
A few minor problems in the beginning. But dealership handled it and haven't had any problems since. Never had a single brake problem like everyone else talks about. As a matter of fact i have only put one set of front brakes on in 88000 miles and no rear brakes yet. Handling is key in this vehicle, i would put it up against any other suv on the market for cornering, and believe me i have driven nearly everything out there in its price range.
Jwaugaman review
I have put 85,000 miles on it in 3 and a half years and not had any major problems. It has excellent power (V8) and not unreasonable gas mileage.
lemon of a dealer, lemon of a jeep
Plan on heavy expenses for maintenance (nothing was covered under the gold extended jeep warranty). before 45k miles, I replaced the AC system, brakes, battery (twice), various electrical components, power window modules, memory seat module, stereo speakers, stereo controls on steering wheel, etc. Everytime I started the vehicle, the seat would propel me into the dash - jeep couldn't find the problem, not to mention the calls for a tow truck because it wouldn't start - so I got the opportunity to spend lots of time and money in the shop. Lots of road noise with this vehicle. It may look good from the outside, but it's not worth the headaches.
Too Bad
Baught this vehicle because of the looks and comfort it is certainly in my opinion the best looking SUV on the market and, the comfort is luxurious to say the least. However,Mechanicly it is a nightmare.I just had the replace the whole rear-end at a cost of $1500.00 The rear window leaks,There is a whine in the tranny. As much as I love this vehicle its just to much of a risk for otheres to buy one.If you do, I hope you keep a mechanic withn you at all times.BTW,It had 69000 on it when I baught it.
Jeep = Junk
The gas mileage (V-8) with the exception of highway cruise (about 20 mpg) is horrid, about 13.5 mpg. The front brakes suck, have been replaced 3 times in the first 27k miles. The rest of the vehicle has faired only a bit better. Stalling, transfer case binding, drivers seat loose (was told that is normal) are current issues at 31K miles. Love to drive it, it tows a trailer very well even in high crosswinds, and it is very capable off- road. My lease ends soon, glad I don't own it.
AWESOM RIDE
IIIIIIIIII LOVE THIS RIDE HAD IT OVER A YEAR AND WILL BUY ANOTHER. RECENT ICE STORM THIS THING SAVED MY FAMILY'S LIFE. AWESOM BRAKING NOW. MECHANIC FRIEND SAID DO NOT TIGHTEN WHEELS WITH AIR WRENCH JUST TIGHTEN WITH TORQUE WRENCH...NO BRAKE PROBLEMS SINCE. THE STEREO IS SUPURB INFINITY DID GREAT. AWESOME HEATER AND FUN RIDE...LOOKS LIKE A PERFECT MIXTURE BETWEEN MACHINE AND ART...WILL BUY ANOTHER.
Love My Jeep
This SUV rides so comfortably and we always get compliments on it. Very few issues. The computerized metrics/displays are really helpful and advanced.
Love this car, Get the warranty.
I drive about 60 miles a day on L.A. freeways, and do alot of 4 wheeling on the weekends, and have not been disapointed or let down yet. However, know that this car has some faults that will probably need to be fixed. When the front rotors warp (which will be soon) spend the extra $50 on aftermarket crossed-drilled rotors, and some good pads. They will save you money in the end. Change your fluids like you should (engine oil, X-Case, Tranny, and Diffs) and those shouldn't give you any problems. The extended warranty is fairly inexpensive piece of mind. I can't wait to see what it can do with some decent tires.
1999 Jeep
We have had very few problems. Did do the brakes twice but other then that Jeep has been a great vehichle. My wife uses it for around town and with kids. Change oil & general maintenance every 3000 miles. I think this is important and explains lack of problems. I would buy another one.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4X4
Bought this 4X4 Jeep in 2005 with 55,000 miles. Loved it when I bought it but started having problems about 6 months later. Had to replace output speed sensor, water pump, security sensor, door lock actuators, door checks, cvt boots, radiator sensor all under 75,000 miles. Gas mileage is terrible for a 6 cylinder averaging about 13 mpg. AC is ice cold and heat works very well and quick. Loved the outside temperature gauge with compass, average mpg, and fuel range. Very comfortable and roomy and fun to drive. Just sold it with 85,000 miles. Good fun vehicle if you have a warranty and don't have to worry about these problems.
Get a clue
Great styling vehicle. Rides nice with the unibody construction. Chrysler has NO CLUE how to make brakes. After 10,000 miles all down hill. Dilligently, washed my vehicle every week, however tree sap still ate through my clearcoat. Paint is like butter.
Terrible Reliability
I take emaculate care of my vehicles. Regular oil changes, service inspections, etc. The vehicle is used on-road between work and home. Here are the problems 1 Window Motors 2. Fuel Pump 3. Air Conditioner 4. Transmission Slipage 5. Radiator Problems 6. Numerous Recalls It's nice they fixed most under warranty, but who wants to deal with issue after issue? The pain of dropping it off and picking it up. I just traded my Jeep (40000miles) for a Toyota Sequoia and don't regret the decision at all. Bottom line, purchasing this vehicle is a risk. Do you think you'll be lucky?
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited
Car now has almost 60,000 miles. No problems except toe-in/out requires monitoring and adjustments every 20,000 miles or so.Gas mileage on a 1000 mile trip decent, 22 mpg. city driving 17 mpg. Color being stone white doesn't show road dirt, easy to clean. Very comfortable seats.Visabilty very good.
EXCELLENT
VEHICLE HAS BEEN EXTREMELY RELIABLE TRACTION IS SUPERIOR COMFORT SUPERIOR SOUND SYSTEM - INFINITY GOLD IS SUPERB 10 CD HOLDER HAS WORKED SUPERBLY I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS SUV TO FRIENDS. I LOOK FORWARD TO OWNING THIS VEHICLE FOR 10 YEARS. VEHICLE IS SERVICED LOCALLY BY WARNOCK IN EAST HANOVER, NEW JERSEY.
You mean rotors are suposed to be round?
Had this Jeep since new, now with 28,000mi. Front rotors replaced at 7,000mi and again at 25,000mi. Called Chrysler and they refunded me my money for the 2nd brake job. Turns out they WILL REPLACE THE CALIPERS ON ALL CARS WITH THIS ROTOR ISSUE! Call them and they will authorize for your car to have new calipers, pads and rotors installed FREE! Just hold onto the receipt you have from the brake job.
Everything is great except powertrain
This has really been an excellent car, except for the recent transmission problems Im having now. This SUV drives smoother, has better interior, and more power than even some of the V8's in its class (Ford, Nissan, Toyota, etc). But the transmissions are notorious for going bad soon after 50K (Im one of the unlucky ones). It slips when shifting between 2nd gear and drive...it either hesitates between gears, or wont shift out of 2nd until the rpm's are way high. The new tranny is costing me $3000. If you notice any weird sounds or shifting behavior...dont delay...take it in asap.
A 1999 jeep grand cherokee owner review
everything about the 99 jeep grand cherokee is great accept for the gas mileage.
Jeep
My husband and I have enjoyed this Jeep, but we're glad the lease is up. We tried to sell this vehicle and got *no* hits (probably because it was devalued by the dealerships with all the 0% APR). No real probs, but it did stall in the middle of a hip-high river once, while an old chevy and even a Suzuki Samuri made it through no prob. We had to be towed over 12 miles. Through the desert. Pushing down on the gas to pass, a half-second wait for power??
Will buy another!
I bought my jeep brand new in 1998 with less than 50 miles on it. Today 5/31/2010 I just hit 160,000 miles. I have never had a bit of problems with my Grand Cherokee. The A/C still blows ice cold. i live on a no winter maintained road and I have never been stuck anywhere. It takes the snow in a stride and has never let me or my family down. I don't like the 05-10 Generation grand Cherokee I feel as mine is better built. My Grand Cherokee is fully loaded with options except the 4.7 v8 but I find the 4.0 more than adequate and pulls a boat up the boat launch with no effort. I really like the 2011 maybe it's time for a trade in. I still trust my jeep to go anywhere I want it to.
no more jeeps
since i bought my jeep i have had too many problems, brakes, steering noise, ghost bump, stalling, i have had 2 previous jeeps and this was the first one with these major problems, my 1997 JGC had brake problems, i now own a 2001 pathfinder. it just took one test drive around the block and i soon realized what real quality meant
i like the suv but
so far i only have 16000 miles on my jeep. But others have told me transmissions are not reliable.
High maintenance
The Jeep turned out to be very high maintenance. My first brake job was at 7500 miles, next at 11,750, next at 24,500 and on and on. The brake job at 51,500 cost over $500. The transmission was replaced at 11,750. At 61,600 I had to replace the transfer case output and input seals. Also another brake job at that time. Now at 66,000 miles the transfer case shifter shaft seal is leaking and to fix will cost $450. Also the rear differential bearings are making noise and must be replaced ($950) and if you let it go too long you will damage the rear axles ($$$). It is beginning to feel like the brakes need work again.
Look else where
In the first 18 months I had to have new wheel bearings, new battery, rear window motors went out, transmission went out. From month 18 to present I had to have new bearings again in the rear, transmission probblems due to dealership service dept. mistake. I WILL NEVER BUT ANOTHER JEEP. This is the first U.S. car I've owned in 19 years. My next car will be a BMW 330ci
jeep G. cherokee
had to replace rotors 3x dealer didn't want to pay any as I was at 12,500 mi. first time and said only covered up to 12K. Spent about 1300$ of my own money to fix brakes and only last about 3 months then need to recut and replace pads or rotors.
Jeep Cherokee Larado
We are very happy with our Jeep. It is the best vehicle we have ever owned outside of our Nissan Maxima. We love the Jeep equally for its quality and beauty.
Jeeps got to love them
This is the most powerful Jeep I have owned to date. I have owned a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Country also. I still own the 95 as an extra car. It is pushing 99,000 miles and is still in mint condition. The 99 Jeep shows great improvement over previous models. Plus it is so much faster and more powerful then also all the other SUVs I have driven(excluding the BMW X5 4.4i and 4.6i).
This Jeep is a terrible vehicle
When we purchased the vehicle, we expected the reliability that is sort of associated with Jeeps. What we got instead is the garbage associated with Chrysler. In 51000 miles, we have gone through 4 sets of rotors, three sets of brake pads, 2 seat heaters, a rear differential rebuild, and a whole laundry list of minor items that have broken (power mirrors, power seats, covers on seat belts, etc..) The dealer knows about the brake problems, Chrysler will not admit there is a problem. I am glad we did not purchase the Quadra-Drive which had even more problems in this year also. Basically I cannot in good conscience recommend this vehicle to anybody.
1999 jeep family vehicle
We, my wife and I, bought the vehicle used. Had 32000 mi. the brakes were checked and described as ok.... after 11000 mi we encountered problems, and the dealer we purchased it from stated it needed a complete brake job. we stated that when we purchased it , the check system stated they were ok? the dealership would not stand behind there own check system, and we purchased the best warrenty program to a tune of $2000 and of course the warrenty program doesn't replace brakes. So I had to pay something like $450 for a brake job... We also had the rear end differential relaced due to noise..warrenty covered this problem..
1,2,3 Heave the Anchor
Cons: It's quite painfully clear that Jeep has under-engineered their drive train and braking system. The vehicle simple looks and is marketed as being tough but can't walk the walk. The truck is built "Good Enough" to make it through a lease period which seems to be the mantra of the American Auto companies. My next vehicle, which will be shortly, will be a Japanese vehicle. The brand Jeep conjures up images of a tough American icon built to last with second to none off road capabilities, which is a farce.
`99 Grand 4X4 Great Truck
This Jeep pulls a 23 ft salt water fishing boat to the gulf and east coast twice a year. It has always performed extremely well. Plenty of torgue for towing and very reliable. The GoodYear Wranglers that came on it sucked and even w/rotation wore out at 32000 miles (or so). I'll buy another Jeep when ready. This is Jeep number 5. My first was a 4.0 litre Comanche pickup, then two Cherokee 4X4s and two Grands. You can have your wanna be Japanese SUVs I'll take the one I rely on for power at a reasonable price - Jeep!
It is an a tough SUV
Have had problems but it is a great suv. GREAT POWER!!!!!! comfortable and stylish. Problems-brakes,rear bearings, and starting. it is 1000 times better then my buddy's explorer. but no bmw.
Good looking jeep, Exc. design & perform
Exc. design & performance
Good once it's fixed
I have the usual brake shimmy and a little drivetrain noise but other than that, after 63000 miles it's working well after 7000 dollars worth of waranty repair. If Jeep can get this one right the first time, it's an awesome purchase. Don't count on MOPAR to get it right the first time though. They just don't have the track record.
Don't Buy this Jeep or any Jeep
I will never buy a Daimler-Chrysler product!!!!!! Since we bought this Jeep we have had numerous problems with the power windows until they were fixed by the dealer and finally stopped working for good. I spoke with a number of people who have had the same problems with the window plus more. If you want to buy a dependable car or suv look elsewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't buy these products from JEEP!!!
Still lovin' it
I bought my JGC used, and to be honest it wasnt my first choice (i wanted a pathfinder). Very happy i ended up with it though. Its more comfortable, had all the features i wanted, and the 4wd on it will kick anyones butt. Even my dad's landrover! I have driven it through 4 feet of snow with no slipping. 7,000 miles after buying it the front differential broke, but i blame that on carmax for not checking the fluid, not Jeep. Since then my passenger side window stoped working, but my warranty covered that too.
Spectacular
I purchase my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in 2005 I love it it has been very reliable I can not complain, only things that really needed to be done was normal maintenance brakes, alternator etc etc. The a/c died last summer but that is to be expected for an older vehicle with over 280000 kms. I am 4 Jeep all the way!!!
Love my Jeep
If you're looking to get into a Jeep, the new (1999 and up) body style is sharp, and these vehicles are GREAT in bad weather. I use mine to haul computer parts, car parts, and even X- Mas Trees. The first year I had it I actually tried to do snow donuts, no luck. Get the I-6 engine, VERY reliable, will run forever!
nice ride
I have had my Jeep for about a year now and although i have seen people on here dog them, i have been nothing but happy. I have almost 60000.00 on the jeep and still havent had to replace the brakes. The stereo is nice. My wife loves the heated leather seats. V8 has some good low end power. I had my friend look at the brakes and he says they look good.
1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
We have owned this vehicle just over 1 year. It has only had a few minor problems which were quite inexpensive to repair. Handles very well in the snow and ice. Wish fuel economy was better but still is quite good in comparison to other similar sized SUV. Would buy another one when the time comes.
My 1999 Jeep grand Cherokee's story
We bought this Jeep as a tow vehicle for a 20' runabout. I can't complain because there has been no problems in the last 10,000 mile. From all the reviews I've read,it seem these jeeps are either a hit or a failure with nothing in the middle. Perhaps Chrysler should take note and increase quality control or extend warrenties to 10 years.
Dont buy a jeep
When i bought the jeep, i was pretty stupid and fell in love with the looks. one of the dumbest things i have done. I have taken the jeep in over 15 times and still i have problems. the quality is so bad that you must have alot of money in the bank just to fix the repairs. such as the ball joints, transmistion, speakers and breaks. I will never buy an american made car again. look at somthing else!
Stay away from the 1999 JGC
The power train is great. Everything else stinks. The first week I had it, I had it in the shop 4 times. Service is poor and in the 3 years I have had it, I have had it in the shop 30 times. Anything from the brakes (twice) to the sunroof. Do not buy. The problems were fixed in 2000, but I would not take that chance again.
Jeep = Worst Junk Car
It is such a junk car!!! Since I bought it, I have kept getting back to dealer for repairing, radio noise, gas tank leak, window noise, power window not working, power seat not moving, door can not be unlocked, engine check light on, so on........If any one wants a reliable car, never look at the Jeep!!!! Take the lesson from me! But you like the fancy functions and don't care to visit Jeep car dealer for fixing "small problems" once a month, go ahead for it.
Thw worst vehicle $30K can buy you
From the day I got this vehicle, it has been one thing or another. It just seemed like everything was falling apart inside-out. Considering I traded in a Honda Accord to get this Jeep, made me feel like a loser even more. Current list of problems - broken transfer case, break system failure, suspensions need replacement, steering wheel alignment, power windows dont work. As you may have guessed, all of this starter happening right after the warranty expired.
JGC Brakes break my heart
With 80K miles on my '99 JGC I'm now looking at my 5th front end brake job. Warped rotors have been turned, turned again, and replaced with after-market rotors. Still going bad after just a few thousand miles. Otherwise, it's been a fun vehicle - plenty of class and comfort. Just wish my brakes didn't break my heart.
