Tall Guy in a Hyundai

I’m 6’ 3”, lots of headroom in this car. Easy to exit as the driver’s seat moves rearward when the engine in turned off and the shift lever is in Park. Driver’s seat also has adjustable lumbar support. Has adaptive headlights – front lights turn when steering wheel is turned. Trunk is large, plus the back seats fold down for additional room. The Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) uses radar signals and camera recognition. AEB has many limitations, be sure to read the Owner’s Manual for more info on this. Quite cabin on city streets. As Edmunds noted, some tire noise at freeway speeds. With the turbocharger, lots of power for entering the freeway and for passing. No heads up display, but speed is displayed in a large font in instrument cluster. Looks beautiful in quartz white pearl.

I got this car to replace my 2015 Sonata. Not sure the new style is better, I kind of liked the 2015 better, especially the rear with the plates on the trunk. But overall this is a terrific car for your money, save for a few drawbacks. The car drives well, nice quite ride and respectable handling, but ride is not as smooth as a Camry and handling not as good as an Accord, Mazda6, or as precise as a Fusion. Pros include: Slightly better ride/steering over my 2015. Better interior, smart controls (w/ non-auto climate), tuning knob, custom button. Overall is exemplary, very intuitive designed with nice big clearly labeled buttons and knobs. Touch screen is responsive, although some corners don't respond like it's supposed to. The interface is also quite easy to use. LCD Shows date (wish it would also show exterior temperature). Car doors make a satisfying thud when they close. Still a fully printed owner's manual! Cons include: Brakes still too touchy, it makes too abrupt stops. Steering is still too feather-light. Heated mirrors are no longer included in the base model - something Hyundai used to offer all these years. No CD player. I know many cars today omit them, but I really miss it. Home screen should be more customization. Would like to get rid of the AV Off message. Some settings are confusing. Ugly gauges (miss the 2015 Elantra). Only 1 USB for music & Android Auto. Bluetooth makes problems (I have a basic phone). No gap-less music player. Headlight delay is 5 min or none! Overall interior is not too pretty (2018 Accent is nicer). Can't turn off the LCD between the gauges.

As much as I want to say that my new car is great in every way... It isn't. But it's extremely GOOD and very well priced. The interior materials use hard plastics in very unfortunate places (hurts to rest elbow or side of knee on door panel!), the seat bolsters aren't big enough for slippery leather, and winter traction has been downright alarming. On the other hand, the stereo has absolutely fantastic sound, the car has a very comfortable suspension and steering, and while it is on the slow side, it's great for cruising once you're up to speed. Fuel economy has also been better than expected. The place where it really shines though, is price. It was a full $4000 less than similarly outfitted midsize sedans. While it isn't the best car I've ever owned, it's not far off, and the value-for-money is outstanding. UPDATE (2.5 years later): My initial impressions have pretty much stayed the same. My initial impressions of comfort have gotten better after a few months of tinkering with the seat adjustments. I don't really have any complaints there. Fuel economy is consistently better than expected, especially on the highway-- on long solo highway trips, I've had over 40 mpg. It's still woefully slow, but then-- it's not really for people who like driving fast. One strange thing is that some gas pumps trigger their automatic stops almost immediately with this car. Never had it happen before, and it only happens with specific pumps, so I'm guessing there's something about this car that trips it for some reason. Not really a problem though. As far as durability goes, I've had exactly 0 thing break, and literally everything has been smooth sailing. I think my final opinion is that this is NOT a car that you love. The emphasis is on creature comforts (Sound system, Android Auto, Ventilated Seats) rather than driving performance. This is NOT a car that anyone falls in love with driving. This is for someone who wants a car to get them from point A to point B in nice, boring comfort. This is not a car your children want to drive, this is the car your mother wants to drive. It's a fantastic car if you car more about getting to your destination than the journey to get there.

Loving my 2018 Limited Ultimate

Mike B., 07/02/2018

So far about 4600 trouble-free miles. Very nice ride, quiet on the highway, and the extra bells and whistles with the Ultimate package come in handy. The adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist took some getting used to, but I've found I really like them. This is my first car with the "cooled" seats (they just blow cabin air though them) and with the A/C on it's very nice. Another feature I'm very happy with is the side mirror blind spot detection. The car is very comfortable and the controls are intuitive and well placed. I'm getting good mileage, but as others have mentioned, performance in the "Eco" mode is lackluster. I generally use the sport mode to get on the highway and any other times I need better performance, then switch it back to Eco for cruising. The only thing I don't like about the car is that every once in a while the key fob in my pocket will open the trunk. I guess the button must hit against something else (keys, change?) in my pocket. I think it's too sensitive. I've owned several Hyundai's (and Kia's) and must say that as time goes by the just get better and better.

Engine/harness trouble - no more Hyundai for me

Susan, 04/20/2019

I will start by saying I give 2 stars because this is an on-going problem and Hyundai is still sell this car, even after it is supposedly fixed. Very unsafe. I purchased this car brand new in August 2018. In March 2019, I received a recall notice saying I needed to visit my dealer to have the computer for the car's engine updated. I took the car to the dealer 3 days later. Five days after that, I'm driving to NY and 400+ miles away from home, my brand new car begins "limping" as I try merge onto a busy bridge. I took the car to the nearest dealer in Staten Island, NY and it is still there today. Not sure what is wrong. I understand this is a huge problem for the company where the engine or the harness in the Sonata and Santa Fe models need replacing. They think it's the harness, however, the piece has yet to arrive, so no telling. Because my trip was considered interrupted, I called Hyundai’s Customer Care 800 and received directions on what I should do next. They were empathetic, but they could not tell you what amount you would actually get reimbursed. That is up to the case manager to say and you don’t hear from that person for at least 5 days. Anyway, once he called me 5 days later, my case manager was extremely helpful and I was able take care of all the paperwork for the buy back, as well as my reimbursement funds. Prior to this problem, I was relatively happy with the car. I enjoyed the generous warranty, the high safety rating, the huge trunk space, and the beautiful look (although the grill was a bit angry-looking to me). I also loved that it had a lot of “giddy-up”. I don’t think it was as quick on the draw as my 2012 Sonata (that was a rocket!), but it was close. Lastly, I received a great deal on the purchase of this car. I was displeased with the elimination of the CD player, the Sirius service in the base SE version (I should not have to use my phone for music) and the pocket on the back of the passenger seat. Really no need to take these features from the base Sonata; that was just cheap on the part of the company. As I will no longer be a Hyundai customer, I will add that all the service I received at the Hyundai dealership in Fredericksburg, VA was exceptional. The people were always polite and courteous, the place was clean and welcoming for adults and children alike, and my car was always returned to me shiny and clean, inside and out, whenever I went for a servicing. I hope my next dealer is as thoughtful and attentive.

Great Value for Money

For the price, it is definitely a great buy - great fuel economy, interior, electronics, and safety. In other words, all the must are well satisfied. Where it falls short? Test drive the car under cold conditions and idling conditions to get the feel for sound and vibration. Make sure they are acceptable to you. I felt that Hyundai needs to work on this area more to stay on par with other leaders. An additional thing to keep in mind is the insurance cost. For places like NY, insurance cost is high for sedans. Look for adding safety features to reduce insurance cost OR try other vehicles with AWD which may save $1000 per year in insurance cost alone.

Enjoyable Car Except When Dealing With Hyundai

Comfortable cabin with easy to use features for the most part. The different drive modes are nice and there is a noticeable difference in response when using Sport mode, which I prefer. Not sure why but if using Sport mode it reverts back to the default Comfort setting when the car is turned off but if using the Eco mode it will remember that setting. Navigation has proven to be less than optimal, on long trips we still rely on google maps which are better to begin with but have the added feature of real time traffic avoidance suggestions that prove to save much time. I find it odd that the map lights are a bright white (which I like) but the visor lights and rear dome lights are a dim yellow light. The remote start via Bluelink phone app is reliant on a cell link to the car so it has had about a 20% failure rate for me so while it is a nice feature I wish this vehicle also had remote start that could be triggered from the key fob. This is my first vehicle with keyless entry and start and I love that feature, never having to remove the key fob from my pocket to open doors and start the car is wonderful. Because of the push button on the door handles and the auto opening trunk I have never once used the buttons on the key fob. So overall I love the car, but the downside of the vehicle is dealing with Hyundai. I had an initial issue with the Bluelink account setup with which the dealer couldn't figure out and Hyundai was very little help. It took me 6 weeks of calling every 2-3 days to resolve the situation. I also recently scheduled service for the vehicle via the Bluelink app and the factory ordered update to the computer was not performed, it seems that the dealership either doesn't understand the information sent from Bluelink or ignores it. Either way this is a problem being that they want to charge me $100 a year for this feature after the third year. Summary, nice car but absolutely dread dealing with Hyundai. For full disclaimer I've dealt with Honda for the past 10 years and the difference in service is huge.

Great value. I call my 2018 Turbo Sport "Leila" because she is a beautiful black piece of machinery. There were other models I was interested like the sporty version of the Camry and the Tesla but for all practical reasons, the Sonata have me the best value for my $$$. The only improvement I strongly recommend is that the stereo system lacks BASS power.

Engine troubles 4 months in

I purchased a brand new 18 Sonata SEL+ on October 15th of 2018 and as of now (3-6-19) the car has been into the shop for repairs 5 times and a total of almost 40 days. It started with and engine grinding sound with the vehicle shut off and without me trying to start it or unlock doors. The car on multiple occasions has had an extended crank, where it would crank upwards of 8 times before starting. Two times the car has failed to start on the first attempt. Now it's back in for a check engine light and the dealership has told me that it needs a new engine and can't give me an estimated time frame. I'm currently working on filing for a lemon law with this issue and hopefully be out of it sooner than later as I drive 150 miles a day for work. Buyer beware!

Great car with Luxury/sport feature but annoying

This is my second Sonata. I had a 2008 Sonata that I got 300K miles before I retire her(mainly highway). When my in between needed to be replaced I went with the 2018 Sonata. This car looks and feels very luxurious. Everyone can’t believe it’s a Hyundai, it looks really sharp. The exterior and interior are very appealing. I have noticed the grinding sound some others have mentioned when accelerating. It is actuality annoying but gets drowned out once you get going. Also I have noticed a “whistling” sound at highway speeds. I am attributing this to the moonroof. I was surprised to see not have remote start on the key Fob given I opted for the high end model. Also not available is front park sensing (only rear). I am a huge fan of the smart cruise control and Auto Hold feature. Overall this is a great car with some issue that could get annoying.

Do't believe the EPA figures on this car. I've had 2 straight Sonatas, 2.4 engine. I get 16 city, 31 highway, always on ECO. THe car is comfortable, reliable and attractive. It is quiet. It gives you a lot of amenities but those darn mileage figures won't increase.

Have a 2018 sonata se and I am disappointed in how the bluetooth works. On all of my other vehicles I can use the voice command to make calls . I am being told that this does not work on the 2018 Sonata SE. I am being told that I will have to plug my phone in every time I get in and out of the car and use Android ( Samsung galaxy 8) to use the voice command button on the steering wheel. We were not informed that this was how blue tooth worked on the 2018 Sonata SE when we bought the car. Had it to the service department and were told that the Sonata was the only Hyundai model that works this way. Other than this we are satisfied with the car.

I have driven many Fords in the past, and felt that is was time to drive something that didn't look like a police car. The Hyundai Sonata fit the bill. Great gas economy, a cavernous trunk, super insulation which make the interior of the vehicle very quiet. The Sonata handles great on the road, and the vehicle is stylish.

Reduced rating because of engine defect Extremely comfortable front seats. Slight road tire noise over rough pavement. Has actually improved with time. Pickup good but slight hesitation and vibration on transmission shifting about 40-to 50 mph. Has also improved, less noticeable. Dealership says it is normal but it still is somewhat annoying. Did not experience on other car makes Car looks great . Light grey interior looks luxurious as well as exterior. Looks like a car twice the price. Android auto uses only Google maps No built in navigation. price paid was 17600 (excluding sales tax and registration fees) plus 419 doc fees Above price includes $3000 rebate. Overall great car But downgraded due to an inherent defect in base engine. Poorly manufactured connecting rod bearings may fail prematurely. Hyundai has offered a lifetime warranty but does not soothe my concerns of taking a long trip and having an engine fail. They added software to car computer to monitor premature engine knock which would slow car down and warn driver. Does not fix the problem

Why must I accelerate in Sports mode?

I write this every time Edmunds asks. The answer is not going to change (why would it?) While this is truly the most beautiful and comfortable car I've ever owned, it's acceleration is dangerously unreliable and Hyundai refuses to recognize a problem that's noted all over the internet. The initial problem was an intermittent hesitation upon acceleration. I could go a month without this happening and then pulling out into a busy 2 lane road, get a long hesitation before the response. The service mechanics at the dealership said the computer diagnostic showed everything was 100%. About five years ago I returned my Sonata to the dealer when there was a recall. It seemed to address the problem for about a year. When the hesitation came back the Hyundai technicians told me it was because the battery was low on my key fob - Yes they actually told me this! Recently, they said to put it in Sports Mode when I pull out onto a busy road to prevent hesitation. It's a freakin' middle of the road Hyundai! I have done that and even on occasion still get hesitation. But what an archaic way to drive a car in the 21st century. I really want to dump this Korean car and go back to my Toyotas, but right now, with computer chip shortages is not a good time to buy a new car. I got a Lemon. But Lemon Laws are too tedious and time consuming to pursue, and I can't afford to buy a comparable car in 2024.

We are starting into year 3 on this car (19000 miles) We have had no issues with the car at all. My wife drives this car most of the time and has had only good things to say about it. The car fits her needs fine. The interior is handsome and has held up. It looks new esp the driver's seat which gets the most use. My wife uses the ECO mode for all her driving while I use the sport mode when I drive it. We have no regrets on buying this car and we will likely look hard at the 2020 or 2021 Sonata because of our experience with this one. This is an 18 month review. This car continues to impress. It has all the whistles and bells and they all perform flawlessly. I am surprised at how many people continue to denigrate Hyundai. As I mentioned initially, this car is my wife’s and she came from years of owning Toyota cars. She was unsure about going to Hyundai but she is now a true believer. It is a solid and enjoyable family sedan. This is the one year update on this car. Other than the few things noted on my 6 month update (no storage area in the back of the driver's seat, no coat hanger on passenger side rear) this car has been great. It will not be mistaken for a luxury vehicle but it is doing a great job of providing safe and comfortable driving. The interior looks brand new, with no signs of wear. I have been happily surprised by this car. If someone is looking for a solid reliable family sedan this must be on list to try. We have had no maintenance issues at all. All of the technology works fine and is easy to learn and use. Road noise continues to be a bit loud but to be honest it may be the tires on the car. Hyundai has done a great job on this car. We have just purchased a new Sonata Limited with Ultimate Package for my wife. This is her first non Toyota car ever, after having 10 Toyotas in the past. We started out looking at the new Camry then the Altima and the Accord. Her first inclination was to go with the Camry but as we talked with the dealer and put together an offer she found several things about it that turned her off. The Hyandai dealer was close at hand so we began to look closely at the Sonata. We were able to put together a deal with a comparably equipped Sonata at thousands less than the Camry. We have just had the car delivered so it will be sometime before I can put together a more comprehensive review. The initial quality and delivery were excellent, but time and miles will tell if it holds up. My wife is not an aggressive driver, nor a car enthusiast, she views cars as merely an appliances. We hope the car provides her with reliability and comfort. Stay tuned for updates/

I must start out by saying 5 years ago you would’ve never caught me giving Hyundai a second look. I went just to look at the brand new Kona. Just to look. Wasn’t too impressed with it. So the dealer asked me to drive the sonata. I thought why not. I am so glad I did. I fell in love with this car. The response is unreal for a 2.0 turbo. The handling is amazing. And the amenities are abound. I’m a tall guy. The seats are not as great as my Nissan but it’s still comfortable. Though I have never had cooling seats. Amazing! Only had the car 3 weeks. So I haven’t had to deal with the service yet or winter driving. So I will update that when it comes. But the car so far is amazing. Hyundai, you have made a believer out of me.

My 2018 Sonata SEL the value of the Decad

My 84 year old mother is on her third Hyundai Sonata and just raves about it, so when I decided to replace my Jaguar I thought why not go practical. I purchased a new bright red 2018 Sonata SEL for $18,664 plus fees which was a significant mark down from the $24,990 sticker price. The fit and finish is great, the interior is simple and comfortable. It has all the bells and whistles including Sirius radio, back up camera, heated seats, full power and more. I will definitely buy another, but this may last long as I need. My friend was buying an Acura....and I said, "why?"

Hyundai makes great improvements on 2018 Sonata

Feature rich at a very affordable price. Technology package only 1000.00 extra, and adds many additional features beyond the already standard blind spot detection and cross traffic alert. New 7" display screen and Apple CarPlay standard. Subtle styling tweaks improve the staid appearance of the 2015 which I traded in for a 2018. Too early to comment on reliability, but my 2015 had no problems in the 3 years and 66000 miles I drove it.

Sunroof Exploding for no reason

I have been a big advocate of Hyundai for many years, my sisters, parents and friends have all joined the family since I purchased my first Hyundai in 2015. I now have a 2018 Sonata which I purchased brand new from ABC Hyundai Las Vegas, I recently moved back to California May of 2019 and have been getting my car serviced at Dublin Hyundai for a few months now. Beside the overpriced recommended services, my last visit was not a positive one. I recently had an incident that occurred while driving on the HWY 680 heading to San Jose, CA. I literally were driving ( granted my sunroof was not open) because I was on a conference call for work, it was about 2:15pm and the freeway was pretty clear with no vehicles around me. I was in the fast lane driving to my little brother’s basketball game. Then as I was coming down the hill, I heard an explosion. I looked around my car, checked my rear-view mirror and didn't see anything and then I looked up a realized my sunroof was shattered because glass started falling all over me ( granted I'm driving on the freeway going about 70mph) I closed the shade of sunroof when I realized the glass was chattered to prevent additional glass from falling into my car and on me. In shock I pulled over on the side of the freeway trying to fathom what happen. I call then called my insurance company who advised to contact Hyundai because with their experience this has been a problem, is a manufacture issue that has not been resolved. I called Hyundai, spoke with the representative who confirmed the sunroof glass would be covered by the bumper to bumper warranty. I schedule the appointment for the next day at 0830 hrs, spoke with the service department, told them what happen. granted when I arrived to the dealership I inform the service department when the incident occurred my sunroof was not open nor vented because I was on a conference call, the only reason it was vented when I arrived was due to me seeing if the motor was still working, not damaged and because I too took pictures of the damage myself. I spend the entire morning there until about 1240 for the dealership to show me a bogus picture of a rock impacting my window. The services rep stated to me " you can't control what objects that are flying around you" I re-iterated, there were no other cars around me. I guess god decided to drop a rock from the sky to shatter a closed sunroof glass right? which the spot of impact they're claiming is not true because I took pictures prior to showing up and now all of a sudden I had a mark of impact on their pictures ( I’m not an idiot) . I'm a pretty honest person and my insurance (USAA) would cover this damage, but I know for a fact this was not my fault, nor would I take the time to complete a complaint blog. I'm so disappointed in Hyundai, as they proceeded to present me with a $1699 bill for repairs, I declined repairs because I don't want to give them any more money at this point. I really LOVE my Sonata but at this point its principle... Once I complete my home purchase in the next couple of weeks, I will be dumping this car and will no longer be a customer. let alone forward this post on my social media, tell as may people I can not to purchase Hyundai again. The hard part was that I was being very patient, understanding that they had to do their investigation, but at this point its principle.

I you want a dependable car the SEL Sonata is a great car. Quite Ride. Plenty of room. Plenty of trunk space. Mine has leather seats this was in the deal when I bought it, has 8200 miles. This is my third Sonata. This car has many features that are standard. I had a Sonata 2016 limited which was great with everything u would want on a car. Kind of miss the limited with everything on it, but we did not use a lot of the features. Like the 2018 design. Try the Sonata, u will love it.

This car is not for everyone. If you want a comfortable vehicle with a solid suspension most reviewers of the Sonata would agree this is why they buy the car. The downside of this car I say is its lackluster engine its not a speed demon so your not going to be racing anyone. The cabin is very solid in its layout and you cant beat the android auto play its a steal . There is some tire noise but its nothing to grip about , its a very quite vehicle at freeway speeds and comfortable as well.

Has everything that is necessary for safe and comfortable driving. Moved up from a 2009 Sonata with 274,000 miles. Anticipate continued reliability from Hyundai. One of the most commented on items is the amount of leg room in the back seat. Car overall rides very smoothly, with adequate acceleration for normal driving. Gas mileage varies between 31 and 37 in eco mode depending on city or highway driving. A little over whelmed by all the safety features. Two dislikes of the car is the distance it slows down automatically when coming up on a car in front of you. I have set this down considerably, but dislike the feature. This can be turned off. Other problem is difficulty putting in a car seat in the back. If you use a car seat for a child, suggest you check your seat in the car. It takes me 2 to 3 times longer to take it in or out from our old Sonata or our SUV. Other than that, highly recommend the car. Easy to drive, great turning radius and comfortable. Only had it 3 months so cannot comment on reliability yet only have 9,000 miles on it and only service was an oil change at 7,500. Have had the car for 21 months with 50,000 miles. No problems at this point Still rides well, Had to install new tires, change oil etc. just normal maintenance. Do not use all of the features, but that is a choice of mine, not a problem with the vehicle. Enjoy driving it. Has made several long trips. No major problems at 92k. Over the years have wished we had gotten some additional amenities. Gas mileage still between 28 to 34 mpg depending on weather and city or highway driving. At 94,000 miles oil consumption increased dramatically. Eventually reaching 1 quart every thousand miles. After another 15,000 miles dealing with Hyundai and the dealership, they replaced the motor under warranty.

Very Bumpy Ride

This car is ok as most things go. But its main drawback is that it's a very rough ride. You feel every little bump in the road. Anything more than a little bump hits you hard in your seat, and shakes the car a lot, plus the drivers door creaks. It's almost like there's no shock absorbers on the car. I bought it after reading about how smooth the ride is, but the car has a very rough ride. It's hard to know from just a short test drive with the dealer. Everything else about the car is good, but with the terrible ride, I really wish I spent the extra money for a Camry or Accord. As a side note, the gas mileage isn't as good as advertised, either.

2018 Sonata Limited w/ Ultimate Package

Ryan D Tatum, 10/24/2018
2018 Hyundai Sonata Limited 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 6A)

I'm 6'1" and I have lots of room and lots of seat adjustments to accommodate my frame. I've got 6K+ miles on the car and I have enjoyed every last one of those miles. Tires are a bit noisy but that will be taken care of when I replace them with better tires. All the amenities of this car makes it a very good purchase. My last Sonata (2011) was still going strong after 170K hard miles, I'm sure this one will do the same. Only drawbacks are, does not have dual exhausts like the 2015, no light in the glove box (which is pretty stupid), no handle in the trunk (2015 has a handle to use to close the truck (keeps hand prints from being on the outside of the trunk)), like the rear design of the 2015 better than the 2018. That being said, the positives are so numerous I can't name them all but here are a few. Cool and heated seats, smart cruise control, rear collision sensor, front collision sensors, lane keep assist, LED headlights that move (when turning), duel climate controls, digital/analog dash combo, 8" LCD GPS NAV/Infotainment screen, and so much more. This makes 6 Sonata's in the family (2 x 2011 GLS, 1 x 2013 GLS, 2 x 2015s Limited, 1 x 2018 Limited ) and we have enjoyed all of them.

Ive always liked hyundai since it has a great warranty. I got a 2018 sonata about 8 months ago it now has a little over 13k miles. The biggest issue here its that it failed on me apparently there is a recall for a nock sensor that may damage the engine and I was one of the lucky ones. Car looses poweer out of nowhere and you are forces to drive at about 50mph. I had to tow the car 90 miles since I didnt wanna cause any more damage to it, dealer said they will fix it but now it leaves me wondering how realiable this car would be in the future I planned on owning it for at least 8 years. I may have to trade it in sooner than I thought. This was a major dissapoinment hopefully they can get it together.

Great warranty! Purchased new, have just over 5,000 miles in a year. No problems thus far. Dislike that the doors will swing closed when not fully opened with the slightest breeze. This sucks when you are half way out and the door slams into your knees. Seems like the doors have to be in the fully opened position to prevent this and even this is not a 100% guarantee. Do not like the fact that you need to remove a guard with about 8 - 10 screws to change the oil and filter. If you keep it off then the pulleys and belts are subject to road spray and the like. Do not like the fact that the automatic transmission is sealed and you cannot check the fluid level. This is not just a Hyundai problem however. Dash display could be easier to navigate. Also the tire pressure monitor will not display unless the vehicle is in motion. I DO like the fact that each tire pressure is displayed on the screen however, you don't have to guess which tire is low like in some vehicles. Interior plastics seem a little cheap but all in all this is the second Sonata that I have owned and I traded in a Toyota Camry for this car. I like the Sonata much better! After driving for a year and a half, I get a notice to come in for an engine software update. This update is supposed to sense engine vibration and put the car in safe mode before you blow the engine, some Sonatas have had engine problems since 2011. There have been problems after this software update as people have had to have wiring harnesses changed out etc. I was going to wait until they got the wrinkles out of the software but I started having downshifting problems recently. The car would lurch forward when slowing to a stop from second to first gear as if someone had stepped hard on the brakes. This did not happen at every stop but enough to let you know that something was wrong and annoy you as well. Hyundai has a TSB technical service bulletin about the transmission problem but no recall. I brought the vehicle in and had both the engine and transmission software updates in June 2019 at 9,500 miles. All has been great since, no problems with the engine and the transmission shifts much smoother. I still like the car and hope nothing else happens.

I have had my 2018 Sonata Sport 2.0T for about 8 months now and have 14,500 miles on it. For the most part I LOVE this car. It’s fast, comfortable, spacious, and good on gas. I plan on keeping this car for a very long time so I hope the reliability holds up. With that being said, my car has been at the dealership for the past 3 weeks. It has made a “grinding” or “vibration” sound from the engine since about 2,000 miles. It doesn’t do it all the time but when it does, it bothers me. It only does it between 1500-2000 rpm under light acceleration or reving the engine in park. Every time I would take it in for an oil change it would not make the noise. But finally after 3 weeks the dealership finally got it to make the noise and they believe it is the turbo shields rubbing against each other. So if anyone else has this issue, have the dealership check that. Hopefully my car will be as good as new when I pick it up Friday. South Charlotte Hyundai has been amazing, from the buying experience to the service department. They have provided me a loaner car to drive while mine has been in the shop. Definitely give this car a test drive if your looking for a sporty sedan with power.

I bought my 2018 Sonata Eco with 30k miles, it now has 108k and is running like a champ. It pulls very strong with the turbo, handles tight, good interior layout and features, Apple CarPlay with 7” screen, smooth ride, and it’s a nice looking ride. I do 90% of my miles on the highway, and feel no road fatigue after hours of driving. I’ve only done normal maintenance, and have had no issues, rattles, etc. and routinely get combined city/hwy gas mileage of 35-40 mpg. My only issue, which turned out not to be an issue, is from a stop sometimes the transmission has a slight chatter when taking off, similar to when you don’t release the clutch just right on a standard transmission car. The Hyundai dealer said this was pretty much the way that 7-speed dual clutch auto worked, and it hasn’t been an issue. No power seats or sunroof - 2 less things to go wrong. Highly recommended!

I have owned the car since Feb. 2018. It has 67000 miles on the odometer. Performance is OK for an old guy like me. Sport mode is very peppy around town. ECO is great for the highway. Most of the time I leave it in comfort mode and am satisfied. I bought it for the safety and driver assist features that a comparable Toyota priced $10,000 more for the same package.I admit I have been saved from a few collisions over the years. My habit is to walk behind the car before I drive it, so I had to turn off the auto trunk opener because it is timed at 3 seconds and I guess I don't move fast enough. There is some road noise on the highway, but not unbearable. I had one episode of the engine going into "safety" mode while I was driving cross country and I was able to get it fixed within a day at a dealership. I learned that a class action suit was settled by Hyundai in that the engine is guaranteed for life and they will replace the engine once if it fails. The new engine would then have the standard warranty. I don't believe I could get a better engine warranty so I am keeping this thing until it dies or I do.

2018 Needs new engine - 5400 miles

So i guess I have the lemon. got oil change at 5100 miles, and the dealer did a flash update on the ECM. got near work and the check engine light came on. Took it back to the dealer they said nothing wrong, the code didnt below to my year. next day same thing. Took to a different dealer, the said the rod bearings are faulty, and it will need a new engine. Hyundai it going to buy it back I think, which is the right thing to do. This is the same problem that plagues the 2011-2014 Sonatas and the Santa FE's. There is a recall on those, and some other years are to follow I believe. Disappointing for sure, but they are going to work it out with me. The car is great otherwise, and no complaints on the other features. If you have any issues with yours or any car you own, be sure to report it to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). It is easy, and available online. They will also notify you of recalls, or safety issues. Without doing that, regardless of how small the problem is, there is no checks and balances to protect the consumer. You could help yourself and others to get their vehicles repaired in the event of manufacturer related issues.

Things like Panoramic sun roof, trunk lock, cheapo tail lights, thinner seat belt material, missing rear seat pouch, missing USB compartment door. This should have been a stripped down version. On a positive note, the car has good power, handles well and is in general good looking. The one thing that upset me most was the inability to lock the trunk. Yes it closes. If you give the fob to a valet, he would have access to the trunk. If you park you car and someone breaks a window for entry, the can't open the trunk by pressing the trunk switch. Your valuables will not be protected. How stupid is this? For this reason I'm sorry I leased this car. I won't buy or lease another Sonata.

Awesome car! I love the interior and exterior. I went with the machine gray. It has the power to get up and go, but no fuel economy even when in ECO mode. Always remember you have to pay to play.

Breaks started squeaking periodically just days after purchase. Now constantly squeaking. Need to get it serviced already!

Been handed the keys to the spare car visiting family for a few months: the Sonata SEL. Been driving it a decent amount: Pros: Mostly comfortable, smooth riding, good visibility, nice ride. Base engine is adequate. Gas mileage is pretty good. Cons: The car feels like an appliance (albeit a solid one). There no excitement or sportiness going on here. It could use a 25hp bump. Overall a nice roomy car that drives well for its purpose. I actually enjoy driving it. But if you're looking for something sportier or fun to drive, this would not be it.

Great! After three years, no problems but only 6,200 miles. We're in our early 80's and only ride around town and not much since COVID . At our age, we're so glad to have the great safety features!
