Poor gas milage

I purchased a 2013 sonata new last year and have been fighting with hyundia and the dealership ever sice over gas milage. Advertised is 24 to 35 with 28 combined. Best I ever got was 23 on a flat stretch of highway through ohio. Down to 10 in the hills. But according to hyundia and the dealership that is operating within specs. Would not suggest to by this at any cost

Nice Car, but Bad in the Snow

I love this car, but Hyundai seems to have chosen wheels and tires that were not designed for winter driving. I bought the car in Green Bay late in May 2013. I live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When I first started driving in the snow, I couldn't believe how poor the tire traction was. I was so bad that I didn't feel safe. After buying new all season tires (rated good on snow & ice) for the fronts, I could tell a big difference. The back original tires still would slide out on turns so I bought the rears too. Also, the wheels are beautiful, but they suck up snow like a magnet on the inside. It quickly will throw off the wheel balance. I constantly having to clean out the snow.

A Camry made with Corolla parts

Carlos, 08/28/2017
2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited 4dr Sedan (2.4L 4cyl 6A)

Bought a used ‘13 Sonata limited with 30k miles this year, first Hyundai ever out of 20 cars I’ve owned. Always shrugged Hyundai off as ugly fisher price junk, but decided to try something new after bad experiences with most of the major car brands. It’s not gorgeous, but certainly more handsome than anything domestic or Japanese thats being produced (in my price range) — if not a little less substantial where it counts (heavier doors, sound insulation, nicer quality leather, better electronics) things that make me think that Hyundai actually put some effort into the details, especially the top of the line model. I can let all of that slide, it’s a Hyundai. I enjoy driving it, but there are things that make me wish I never bought it. Engine and safety recalls aside, the biggest problems I have with the car are ones that I encounter every time I drive. The cabin is excessively noisy at freeway speed, AC is also very poor and excessively noisy while reducing engine power considerably. Ride quality is mediocre at best. Poor brakes, the height of the seatbelt anchor is way too low to where I have to pull the belt and reach awkwardly to latch it into the anchor. Seats are way too low to the floor and make entry/exit uncomfortable at best. Head space is non existent if you’re taller than 5’9”. Acceleration is acceptable but after 60 mph you might as well be Fred Flinstone. The biggest problem I have with this car that I can’t stress the most is the gas mileage. I am a cautious driver that does mostly freeway, and the best I can return is 22 mpg. (Btw, the car doesn’t average the MPG for you, you have to record it and do it yourself. The MPG gage resets after every fill up. Thanks Hyundai) For a modern mid sized 4cyl, 22 mpg is garbage, I mean, I get better mpg in my old v8 Infiniti q45 without Hyundai’s comfort quirks. The best parts about the Sonata are all electronic-related (Bluetooth, power driver seat, seat warmers, push to start) and are still rather poor. This car is meant to be nothing more than A to B transport while giving the illusion of being a better car than it actually is. I was expecting more, but I’m not completely disappointed. For the most part, it’s somewhat reliable and you can’t really ask for much more in a sub 20k used vehicle. I wanted to keep this car for a long time, but after the engine recall, I think I’ll be dumping it before (if) I hit 120k.

Worst car I've owned

Corey w, 07/25/2018

All the vehicles I've owned besides this car have been older trucks. 1990s 1980s, and none of them ever gave me as much trouble as this car has. I've had nothing but problems since getting it two years ago. Alternator, seized caliper, pulleys, lights are constantly burning out, blown motor due to recall, and now fuel injectors. I've been stuck on the side of the road more often in this car than all my other cars combined. It gets good mileage, and the heated seats are nice.. but I wouldn't recommend it.

2013 Sonata Bluetooth System

do not purchase this vehicle if you want a good working bluetooth system. Upon our third complaint I receive a letter from Hyundai saying, "it is considered normal operation for the incoming call volume to be quieter than the audio level setting and to adjust the volume on certain calls". That nice, except you cannot hear the incoming call. two other comments off their letter: We are sometimes unable to produce an automobile with the features and materials that will satisfy or appeal to all of our customers. If you prefer, you are more than welcome to contact the Highway Safety Association and report the concern to the Consumer Protection Agency.

This is the second time we have leased Sonatas. Total of four cars. We had to relace the tires of all four cars in two years. This time the dealer told us we should be rotating the tires every 7000 miles. Thanks for the too little too late help. I am in my 50s my husband is in his 60s. We have owned a lot of cars over the years and the Sonata is the first and only car that required the tires to be rotated this much. Because, they are crappy tires. Moving on to another car manufacturer. We have been buying or leasing hyundais for the past 16 years (both of us). So done with them!

I bought my 13' sonata based off the great reviews people have been leaving. It has a great design and a good price compared to competitors. However, after 3 months of ownership less then 3500 miles my car has broken down 3 times now. The first time I went to go start my car and it wouldn't start. For 3 hours myself and others tried restarting the car but it never started. Finally a tow truck came and towed to dealer. Dealer told me that night they couldn't duplicate the problem. So basically oh well take your car home, it's fine now. I'm sure he car magically fixed itself, right? Wrong! Died again 2 days later. After being there 2 weeks it comes home. Now a week later my ac isn't working!

Great car by far! i have owned around 14 cars or so. By far this one is the best one that i have ever had.Drives amazing, looks beautiful and sound system is great! And of course is pretty fast. Turbo kicks in very good. The only bad thing Gas mileage, the material which the interior was built feels pretty cheap but looks very nice.Did have a Recall but Dealership fixed it with no problems. Has push start and other great things. The amazing thing is that Hyundai's vehicles have warranty for 100,000 miles or 10 years so if anything would to happen they will fix it. I currently finished my lease and traded it back in.But i am working on getting another one either that or a 4 door genesis.

Very good overall but two areas that need improvement. One, the passenger seat sits too low and cannot be raised. Two, the steering tends to wander and requires constant correction as compared to other cars I've owned - i.e., Saab and Audi.

Engine Shake and Misses

Worst choice in vehicle i could have made. The car has a shake and engine miss at idle that feels like it will fall out of the car. At idle when stopped at a light the engine has a lope and as you takeoff it shakes and vibrates until you take off. Dealer has blown off all my complaints but acknowledged they test it at idle it park, and they felt what i felt but it doesnt set a code in computer so they cant tell whats wrong. I guess im supposed to just live with it. Hyundai suggested i take it to another dealer which i can guess will go over real well.

I bought this car on May 31st and we can't be happier. The Hyundai dealer was very professional and a pleasure to work with. The Sonata offers very solid construction, great look, fun to drive, strong warranty, and fantastic gas mileage. Incredible value! We initially considered an Accord or Camry, but thankfully didn't waste our time.

I have owned many cars and this one by far is the worst. Its bad on gas, burns oil and the steering is seriously messed up. I keep hearing how this manufacturer has come a long way, which makes me question how thats being measured. I Returned the first week of owning it. If you never driven any other car in the past 20 years this might be the car for you.

I bought a 2013, used in October 2015. I have had steering issues, the paint is flying off the car, and I keep getting mice in my vehicle. My car does not sit, I drive it 90.2 miles per day and, the mice just keep coming. A week ago, I paid $110 to get a dead mouse removed from my heater motor. Took the car in for an oil change and signs of another mouse already in the cabin filter. This past summer, in the heat, I had a really bad odor in my car, found a dead mouse in the glove compartment. I have asked the dealership how to keep the mice out and they have no idea. My biggest fear is one eating the wiring harness. This issue is not covered under the extend, bumper to bumper warranty I paid $1800 for, it's considered maintenance issues. Before this car I had an Elantra, which I drove to 200,000 + miles, never an issue. This was my first Sonata and my last!!

Engine Shaking and Vibrating - Becareful..!

I bought a my first Hyundai ever.....2013 Sonata 2.4 GLS with 9,700 miles, after a couple days (( 85 miles )) I noticed and Shaking, Vibrating sensation that comes from the engine. This is very irritating and disturbing since Hyundai is suppose to be coming up with better quality, sad to say but this gives me much to worry about since it can only get worse as I add miles to the car. I never had this issue with cars., so I'll be taking back to the dealer for service. After finding about this issue I wish I would have bought from Toyota, or Nissan. Very discouraging. If you do decide to buy this car make sure that you get their Top Service Warranty.

Bought a new 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4L 4-cyl, 6-speed Automatic. Got black exterior with chrome accents. Under $22,000 delivered with Hyundai’s President’s Day incentives (which was about $6,000 off MSRP). Need to drive from around Gettysburg, PA to Virginia twice a week for work. Need a car that is good on the Interstate, stop & go traffic, and curved roads along the Potomac River. The Sonata has more precise steering and more power than my 2007 Camry LE. The 2007Camry has more of a luxury ride. Both average 30 mpg. 2013 Camry doesn't have luxury feel like my 2007. 2013 Altima has quality problems. 2013 Ford Fusion needs 305 hp Mustang V6 and better discounts. Sonata wins!

It;s a very comfortable car, great seats, nice leather, and for a car that's as quick as this is, it gets very good mileage. I got black on black and so far could not be happier. If you live in Orange County CA, and you are considering this car, you might want to try Tustin Hyundai, my salesman Elliot Rouff could not have been more helpful and the sales mgr Frank Joubran gave me a lease that was considerably less than what other dealerships were offering without any haggling. All together they made it an easy transaction.

This warranty is a joke. It is not more than a selling tool. The quality of the car is poor. I spent more money repairing Sonata 2009, V6 than at Honda 2002. At 64000 miles the alternator had to be replaced as result if front valve oil leak. Contacted Hyundai who refused to pay for the cost of the repair. Trust me do not buy Hyundai made cars. The warranty is useless. Quality of the car is not good, oil leakage seems to be a problem with the Sonatas.

I traded off a fully loaded 2011 GMC Terrian for this car and have owned it since May 31, 2012 and enjoy driving and riding in the car. I own the limited edition without the turbo and very impressed with the horsepower under the hood. After reading some of the other reviews of how the car is sluggish, paint coming off the car, makes me wonder who is writing the reviews. After going from a V6 in the GMC to this car, I was impressed with the power. The interior of the limited is comfortable and spacious and has plenty of leg room. The car rides quietly without any road noise. Good car for the money!

The harshest ride I've ever experienced from a sedan. Either the suspension is too tight or the Kumho tires are too hard? or both? If you've even owned a small pick-up and experienced the rear end bounce from being too lite, that's what I feel in the Sonata. I've put 100 pounds of sand in the trunk, deflated the tires to 28 psi, and bought a memory foam seat cushion, and still feel the rear end hop. My only hope is to live with it until January (new tax year) and dump it. At about 100 miles the center console started to rattle.

I leased this vehicle 16 months ago. The main reason to buy this vehicle is for better MPG. However, it is pretty disappointing to see low MPG (I get 22/28) average of 24 or less. They reported 24/35, and average is 28 MPG. Issues: I had to replace the blue tooth and speaker system twice and speakers are noisy, however it is covered under warranty. I have changed 4 tires already. They wore out fast and not sure why. MPG is biggest concern - I have asked for mileage inspection test twice, both the dealers gave wrong numbers, however, I am not sure how to prove them wrong. Overall it is not comfortable to drive Customer service - average Financial services - More than worst.

We bought this car used with 19000 miles on it. It’s my wife’s car and she loves it, plenty of power( 2013 was the only year with 200 ponies and a 6 speed select shift transmission standard ) and the gas mileage is mid 30s to 40 even if you drive it with a light foot and keep it under 80! It’s a 2013 limited in shimmering white pearl coat with black leather and a moon roof and is a stunning car. We’ve had the car for 4 years( purchased 10- 14- 2014 ) and have a little over 35000 miles on it and it drives like new. It sits a lot because wife has a work at home job and doesn’t drive it much but even after sitting a month or so in a climate controlled garage it starts right up and runs great. It has many great features, heated front and rear seats and dual climate control, auto dim rear view mirror, front and rear heat- a/c and plenty of room inside. The cons: if your very tall ( 6ft 1 inch ) it’s a little difficult to get in and out of car and the dealers service sucks, but that’s not the cars fault. We are going to have to sell it as we need a heavy truck to pull our airstream RV and I’m having reservations about selling a great car. The only thing I recommend is using amsoil full synthetic motor oil and change auto transmission fluid and replace with amsoil ATF at 30,000 miles as fluid was brown ( Hyundai does not recommend changing fluid but that’s a personal call ) but transmission was shifting fine. I don’t know about the other folks getting bad mileage but mine is great and this car will haul butt if you stand on the accelerator pedal. If you decide to buy one used, get it from a private owner, not a dealer and have it checked out, also make sure it has service history for oil changes and maintenance records. These are great cars and not everyone takes expert care of their cars, that’s why there are so many different opinions about these Hyundai’s.

Let me start at the beginning, On June 11,2018 I was driving and my car stalled. So I waited 4 hours before getting roadside assistance. I eventually had my car towed to Ourisman Hyundai in Bowie, MD where I purchased it. In the meantime I did some research to see if my car had any recalls, well it did. On Tuesday June 12, 2018 I did end up receiving a call from a young lady named Shavon at Ourisman Hyundai she wanted to know why it was towed there and wanted to know what was wrong with my car. So I told her that it stalled and would not cut on, I also explained to her that I never received any letters regarding recalls on my car. She called me later on that day and told me that it was my engine and there was a recall on the engine. Ok the reason why I am really sending this email is because of lack of concern and lack of communication, I was inconvenienced I was out of a vehicle for a whole week and I do not work close to where I live. I did ask about getting a loaner in the meantime, Shavon told me that the did not have an loaners available and they would arrange for me to get a rent from Enterprise, the cost was $37.00 a day they would cover the $30.00 and I would just have to pay the $7.00 a day. I understand that everything has to be process but I am still making payments on my vehicle plus car insurance on a my car that is not in my possession right now. After a whole week of having to call them to find out what was going on with my car, I received a call on Monday stating that they had finally made arrangements to pick up a rental at Enterprise 16300 Heritage Blvd in Bowie, MD. I had to get it transferred to a closer Enterprise because it was too far, so they end up transferring it to Enterprise in Glen Burnie, MD. So I ended up picking up the vehicle, so yesterday after having to call to see what was going on with my car Shavon calls me after the fact, "Ms. Williams, I have good news your engine is here", I said I called and I was told that already. I went further and stated to her that I am really enjoying my rental and I might switch car companies altogether. She said what did you get, I told her that Enterprise gave me a Nissan Altima. Ourisman Hyundai in Bowie should communicate better with the customers or provide loaners from the lot, out of all the vehicle that they have that are not selling, it is not like I am trying to keep it. I already am making high car payments on a vehicle that has issues. This is not how to do business and I do not treat my family, my patients anyway the way I have been treated or inconvenienced. I am in the process of contacting my lawyer.

I have been in the auto industry for 30 years... from Toyota to Porsche.... This car is TOPS for the money. Fun to drive... Great fuel economy! (better than posted) From Dallas to Tucson on a tank and a half. Comfortable on long road trips! Don't wait for re-fuel to take a break.... TOO LONG! Hyundai's customer service has been exceptional. Buy gas and drive.... and after a year and a half I'm still ecstatic. I'm used to a new car every 4000 miles... so this one is GREAT! After reading some reviews, I think the ball was dropped on the Dealer end.

I am extremely maintaining my 2013 sonata so that it would go beyond 300,000 kms like my previous cars, but on its 220,000 kms it starts to burn oil about 250ml for every 1000 kms. I went to the dealer asking if warranty still covers engine failure after 200,000 kms (their warranty extension coverage), they said "no more coverage". So, lets see, when this car engine dies. For info about my engine maintenance: 1) Use 5w30/10w30 synthetic 2) change oil between 4,000 kms to 5,000 kms 3) used genuine oil filter or Mann Filter W811/80. 4) change air filter 12,000 kms.

Navigation system is working but not dependable. Engine quit after 80,000 miles. Warranty replaced it as well as steering and transmission leakage. Other minor recall notices: taillight, glass roof, seatbelts, steering, transmission, etc. You can go to mapnsoft.com and do the navigation yourself for $169.....its cheaper to buy a hand held portable GPS system. Over all 13 recalls

Bought a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with 55,000 miles on it. After the first three months the air conditioning broke, had to have the compressor replaced. Three months after that the radio and entire blue tooth system stopped working. I had the car until I sold it a couple years ago (2021) at 88,000 miles. It drove me from A to B, that's about it.

I bought a new 2013 Sonata due mostly to its price and warranty. I've only had the car for a few weeks and I am still forming an opinion about it.

The '13 Sonata rang in nearly $2,000 below similar Camry and Accord offerings and after 4,000 miles it's a solid thumbs up. Interior materials are upscale with soft-touch surfaces where expected. Although windows are short, the cockpit seems airy enough and visibility remains good fore and aft. Controls are simple, well-placed, easy to operate, legible and have good tactile feel. Most guages are fine, however the speedo shows numerals only in 20 mph increments and the infotainment display is disconcertingly hard to read day and night with fuzzy images on a dim blue background...simliar to a thermostat. All seats are comfortable, and there is plenty of room in back with a spacious trunk.

Bought new about a week ago. So far, the biggest disappointment is the sound from the stereo. CD's, Radio, Sirius all sound less thanb acceptable. There is a general muddyness that is going to result in having to invest in an aftermarket stereo. Other negative is the "ride" is somewhat bumpier than I am used to with my '09 Accord and '06 Camry. You really feel every bump. Hoping that "breaking in the suspension and tires will help for Positives are: layout of dials, controls. Nice the parking brake lever is not in center of console. The car performs well on turns, pick-up if fantastic (I do not use the "eco" mode). And the car is very sporty looking (I got it in black with spoiler)

I've only had the car about two months, so this review may change. But so far I've been very happy with my 2013 Sonata. Got used with just under 65000 miles on it, still drives great. No major repairs on the CarFax, and nothing bothering me so far. Others have mentioned the steering--I don't have that problem. Granted, my car has a cushy life--I drive about 4,000 miles a year, almost all city. This car is great for a commuting car, very spacious and easy to clean. My one problem with my car is the driver's side door doesn't stay open AT ALL when I'm parked on a slope. Even on the barest hint of a hill and the door tries to close on me. That's more a wear-and-tear thing, than a design flaw, I think.
