I bought my Elantra new over 5 years ago(first new car), and I'm still glad I chose the car that I did. Considering the gas efficient 1.8 liter engine in the car, I've always been surprised at how peppy it is. I have a manual transmission, and I'm sure that helps a little bit to give it a peppier feel, but compared to other economy 4 cylinder cars I've driven, I've always been pleased with how quickly my Elantra can get up to speed while maintaining 31-39MPG. For example, my girlfriend drives a 2012 Ford Focus, which is a comparable car with a slightly larger engine(2.0 liters) , and she and I both agree that my Elantra is a more responsive and peppy drive. She and I also agree that my Elantra drives smoother and feels "tighter" than other similar cars we've had over the years. We've lived in Colorado and Wisconsin, so we're very familiar with heavy snow, there have been many times that I have been able to get Elantra out of the driveway and into town, while her Ford Focus sat stuck with the tires spinning. I have the least expensive trim, but its a pretty good looking black interior. It's also relatively roomy for being a 4cyl sedan, and particularly so in the front seats for tall passengers. My father is about 6'4 and he was pleasantly surprised to have enough space in the front seat even with a full leg cast on. The trunk is biiig. After about 5.5 years of ownership and 80K miles, the powertrain is still fully covered by Hyundai's warranty. Being the only owner of my Elantra, I have had zero mechanical/electrical problems. It's never broken down, it's never had issues starting up, the check engine light has never come on, I've never had issues with emissions. The only work I've ever needed to do on it was fairly recently and more or less was routine maintenance: when the car got to about 75K miles, the front end started to sound a little bit clunky when driving on rough roads, so I replaced the sway-bar-links for less than 40 dollars and the suspension sounds like new again. **I've also found it to be easier to do maintenance on than two similar 4cyl cars that my girlfriend has had. I'll take a Saturday and do the same maintenance on both of our vehicles, and my Elantra is consistently faster to maintain. Easier access to the cabin filter, easier to remove the battery, quicker access to the oil pan and oil filter** I'm gonna try and think of anything negative I've noticed about the car over the years, it would only be fair: - It would be nice if cabin noise at freeway speeds was reduced - The stock sound system is fine, but its worth upgrading to aftermarket - It'd be nice to have a button on the trunk to be able to open it instead of only from inside the car or from the key fob - Every once in a while over the years, my key fob has accidentally popped my trunk open?? -When the car has been driven around long enough for the engine to reach operating temperature, it'll vibrate a little bit when it idles. Nothing crazy, no weird noises, but it's done it since the car was brand new. I've seen other people say the same.

Blind spots

Car has blind spots in the front and rear. In the front the side posts hid an 18 wheeler. Small rear view window with blind spots. When backing have almost hit many cars due to large rear window posts and small window. My only accident in over 30 years was backing into a parked car which was hidden the entire time by the right side rear window post. Had to get a pillow to sit on since the seat has a low driver pitch that when on a long trip my right leg would fall asleep due to the strain from the seat belt pressure.

Great value for money but not a great driver. Bought the car based on "bang-for-the-buck", perceived reliability, economy, and features. Scores on all those points (unlike others here, my dealer-maintained vehicle has had no problems at all.) Mileage is good but not what was advertised (a lot better than my '04 Mazda 3, though.) Defrosters - front and rear - are inadequate. Mirror and seat heaters are great. Only real problem is the handling. The rear end will "step out" when you hit bumps in turns (e.g. expansion joints in highway overpass). It will hop around even on straight-and-level driving over broken pavement. Overall, it's "twitchy". Wife wants it gone as a result.

Best value in any car

I bought my 2013 Hyundai Elantra 4 door sedan new in Kingston, Ontario but the car has spent most of its life in Calgary, Alberta. I decided on a GLS with a 6-speed manual. I have been amazed at the value this car offers. After 7 years and over 200,000kms, this car has cost me absolutely nothing in maintenance other than oil changes and regular service like windshield wipers and light bulbs. I replaced all 4 original pads and rotors at 80,000kms and with a lot of highway miles and manual transmission, a recent brake inspection shows my brakes with 50% remaining at 202,000kms. This car has worn well - the paint still looks like new and there is no rust anywhere on the car. The interior shows normal wear with the steering wheel and shifter showing the most wear. Otherwise, with a quick wipe down, the inside still looks like new. After 200,000kms, oil consumption is still the same as it was new, performance hasn't changed and I still get the same range on a tank of gas as I did when I bought the car new 7 years ago (average 650-700kms on 40 litres of fuel). Independent crash testing shows the Elantra to be among the best so I'm pleased with that too. Not the most powerful car out there but the 6-speed makes it a bit more fun to drive. Overall, I did not expect to have this car this long, but it just makes sense to keep it. I have spent next to nothing on maintenance and the car is reliable and inexpensive to operate. There are lots of examples of this car going several hundred thousand miles with one example going a million miles (miles not kms) so these cars have what it takes to last.

Good reliable car at a moderate price. No major issues encountered during the three year leasing period.
