The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

I reviewed this car right after i bought it when i was in love with it. After a year and a half of ownership, i have realized the good and bad of this car. Replaced alternator, transmission at around 56,000 miles. Constant power window problems. Have had engine light issues for the last 5 months. My car was a flood car, but that doesn't explain issues like interior door handles snapping without warning. Bottom line: If you only have 13,000 to spend, Elantra is a good choice. If you can afford better, definitely get something else. I intend on moving up to a Camry or Accord soon.

I have a 2000 Elantra with about 60000 miles on it so far and it has worked out great. It's a decent little car which could be considered phenomenal for the price. The only problems I've had were with the power windows which have all needed repairs at some point. It doesn't compare with the pricer automobiles and it wasn't designed to. bottom line, if it fits your budget, you should definitely go test one out. Personally, I like the pre-2k1 body style though as opposed to the new ones.

Love my lil car. In the 5 years or ownership this car has been back to the dealer once for a recall. Otherwise no other problems.

I bought the Elantra in Oct 2001 after driving all the compact sedans. With the spoiler and sunroof, it was BY FAR the best looking, best warrenty, and had the best price. Over 3 years, I had one problem with the driver side window, but the dealer fixed it in 30 min. Great gas mileage, low insurance, more horsepower . . . the only drawback is that the resale value is low.

I bought this on 09/99 for the past 4 years i dont have any problem with this vehicle.I think this could be due to the fact i am religiously doing manufacturer recommended services and 3k oil change.

The Hyundai warranty was what drew me to this vehicle. I wanted to have a car that started every time I put the key in. That I have a moonroof and a cd player and power everything is also great. While other people have $300- $400 car payments mine was just $167 a month! Did have a stereo problem, but they just took out the old one and put in a new one (covered by warranty!)

I had a pleasant experience with this car. Not enough power though. The sound system is badly designed but it is not an essential part of a car I guess... for me at least. It get realatively good mileage on the highways. Wished it kept its value better.

Bought my car new. In 3 1/2 years, I racked up 110,000 miles. Only problem I had so far was with one spark plug cable going bad, causing the engine to run rough. It caused me $60 to repair. Other than this, I spent money on regular maintenance such as oil&filter change (3-4K miles), one set of tires, and spark plugs.

I started out driving an 85 Accord, but after it was totaled in a wreck with a drunk driver, I got my Elantra. I love it! The cassette player broke, but the speakers are great. I love the compact size, you can squeeze through tight spaces and park almost anywhere. The gear selector safety lock is a pain sometimes. This car has a lot of power for a four cylinder. I was impressed. Handles very well, very easy to drive. The fuel economy isn't bad, but thought it might be a little better for a four cylinder. The trunk is also suprisingly spacious. This is a great car for a high school student.

When I was shopping for a car I was looking for a 2nd hand beater. Something simple to get me back & forth to work. I wanted something inexpensive and after much looking I found the Elantra at a local stealership. Wow! Where do I begin? Dollar for dollar you cannot beat what this lil car has to offer. First of all these cars only come in one trim that means you get EVERYTHING! Power windows, locks, AC, am/fm radio, etc... Even the powerplant is not dissapointing. The 2.0L DOHC provides plenty of zip for this car. The fit and finish is very good. Hyundai has definitely learned from their mistakes and done a complete 180. I highly recommend this car!

I really enjoy my Elantra and would recommend it to anyone. I am good about maintaining it at the dealer, and in return it has been good to me - one mechanical breakdown in almost 5 years and 90k miles - which was covered under the warranty.

I bought this used with 36,000 miles on it. I've had it a year, and couldn't be happier with the value I got. I call it my little eBeater (got it on eBay). Handles New England winters. Llove the sunroof, room for both kids, and best of all - it was cheap enough that there was no payments.

OK, You might not agree with me but this has been one of the most dependable cars I ever had. Yes I've had plenty, starting with a '55 Ford and I might add I've never purchased a Ford since. I changed the brakes at 45,000 and that's the most I have ever gone on brake pads. The only down side was I replace the battery at 30,000 and the tires. I don't like the current looks of the new models so that would keep me away from purchasing one at least until they make some external design changes.

I bought this car used in the fall of 2004, with about 50K miles on it. I've been driving it almost everyday since and have never had a single problem! It runs really well and didn't have any problems starting up in Chicago winter weather. Fuel economy is decent too. While it isn't particularly luxurious or anything, it's still a great car especially when you consider its price.

Excellent experience both in city driving and nine round trips Ohio to Florida and one Ohio to Colorado. Car gets good gas mileage, uses no oil between changes, shifts smoothly (5speed), has good vision, gets good tire wear, handles well at both low and high speeds, stops straight, provides excellent driver comfort with lumbar support seat. Still have original brakes at 55000 miles, orginal exhaust system after five Ohio winters (salt, ice, snow, slush), original batter, and no rust at all. The car has been totally reliable. It has never had a operational problem.

Got this last year for commuting. Holds me and the kids just fine, 32mpg hwy, 27 around town. It's fun having a moonroof. Not much getup and go, but at my age, it gotup and went.....so this is a good cheap commuter car. Don't drive it like you stole it, it isn't a sports car.

Purchased as Program Car with 25000 miles. Has been run both in city and hwy regularly. No problems with it at all. Just normal maintenance of oil changes, tires etc. Has over 100000 miles now and no sign of any problems. Gets good gas milage and great commuter car. Handles well in traffic. Highly pleased with price vs value.

I bought this car with about 65,000 miles on it, and now have 110,000. If I'd written this review before the 95K mark, it would have been a glowing review. However, since then just about everything has come apart-- the transmission (and I'm not one to push a car and don't live in the city), the power window, horn, check engine light, oxygen sensor, wiring etc. This is one of those cars that falls apart at 100K, and you're unlikely to find one with lower miles these days. The Elantra was essentially redesigned the *next* year, so the newer models may well be worth looking at.

I was the 2nd owner, and had it for miles 77K through 114K. During that time, I replaced: front rotors, cracked exhaust manifold (free recall fix), plugs and wires, window regulator, o2 sensor, washer pump, horn, wiring, transmission (OUCH!). The previous owner had replaced the mass air flow sensor and throttle positions sensor. The entire exhaust rusted out too-- salt is tough up here though. Still, that's a lot of repairs for ~30K! And I did the timing belt stuff and tires, which is routine-- but it hurts to do all that and then have the tranny go.

I bought my Elantra in '99 when my car (an '89 Corsica I would LOVE to have back) died unexpectedly on a road trip. As a recent college grad (with a degree in teaching no less) I was strapped for cash. I needed an affordable car with a great warranty. I must admit, for the money, the car has performed well. However, the options are limited and the car shifts horribly, lurching forward often at high speeds. In it's defense, I have put a lot of miles on the car (80000 in less than 4 years); however, I have maintained service as well. The bottom line: if it's all you can afford, go for it. If you can afford something else, you'll probably be happier!

Insurance is very high!! Good quality for a low cost car, warranty was the major selling factor for me. It is a little too small for my family now, have to move up to a SUV or mini van.

112,000 Miles and Counting

I bought this car in Nov. of 1999, lured by the low price and warrenty. My experience with cars in the past have been horrible, and I was hoping for a bit of luck this time. Turns out that I found it. I have averaged about 32,000 per year on the car, and I have not experienced any major problems to date. I was sorley afraid that all of the major components would break down as soon as I hit 100,000 miles, but it has not happened yet. If all of the cars built for this year perform as mine has, I would recommend it to anyone.
