Researched for a month B4 buying Elantra GT 2016

Update 1-6-19 After another long road trip in August we decided that the Elantra GT is just too uncomfortable to drive on long trips. It broke my heart to trade her in, but since we travel a lot I really had to consider comfort as a top priority. I ended up getting Kia Sorento with the same mileage. I gave up a lot of quickness but it is a very comfortable vehicle and after our 1st 1,000 mile trip we both decided that it was the right move. Update 7-4-18 Now that I have had the car for a year and driven 20,000 miles I still love it and everything I have said previously is still true. Update 1-3-18 After 6 months I've realized that you DO kinda get used to the lowness of the seats. My girlfriend and I took another 1000 mile plus road trip, this time to Asheville, NC in December. We were both more comfortable this time with no back or body issues after about 9 hours each way. We also had the surprise experience of driving the Elantra GT in snow and on ice! They were only supposed to get 1/2 inch of snow in the Asheville area and they got an unexpected 7 inches over the weekend instead! On our trip up there we experienced dangerous white out conditions on mountain roads and the car held its own very well in those conditions. Living in central Florida I thought I'd never use the heated seats and mirrors but they both came in handy during this trip. Something took us by surprise is that there is a warning light that comes on that is not in the owner's manual. I called Hyundai and found out that there is actually a light that comes on to warn you of hazardous driving conditions! It's a little light that looks like a road with a snowflake on it. In the morning after our first night the car was covered with about 4 inches of snow and the parking lot was iced over. The car started right up (it was only about 24 degrees) and the defrosters quickly took care of the snow on the windshields. The car performed very well on the ice which I would probably have to credit to the tires along with growing up and learning to drive in the snow belt in western NY. In summary after 6 months I am still thrilled with my purchase. I love the way the car drives, especially the acceleration on the highway when you go to pass another vehicle and the handling. I like high performance driving so I drive in the sport mode at all times. After becoming used to the car the comfort level is acceptable and I don't even use the cushion I bought any more. I highly recommend this vehicle!!! Before I review the car I need to say that I am a car salesman's nightmare! I do very extensive research to find the make and model car I want to buy, do test drives to compare models, then decide which car I am going to buy. Once I have decided the make and model I do a 200 mile search to find dealers that have the car I'm looking for, call them to expertly get their bottom line price, and make sure that I know exactly what my trade is worth. After that the remaining step is to figure out which dealers are willing to sell me the car I want at the price I already know I am going to pay and figure out which one I am going to buy my car from. NOBODY ever SELLS me a car, I BUY cars. After extensive research I determined that the Elantra GT is the perfect car for me and I actually bought this one from a dealer via email. After agreeing on the deal I just had to go for a quick test drive, fill out some paperwork, and I was off with my new car. They even gave me $100 more for my trade than i was asking for. ON TO THE 2016 ELANTRA GT- My only complaint about the car is that the seats are too low! Nothing a $30 memory foam car cushion couldn't fix, but I'm 6' and my girlfriend is 5'3" and the seats are too low for both of us. I love EVERYTHING else about the car. My personal acceleration test gave me 0-60 in 8 seconds using the shift-matic and 10 seconds using the auto 6 speed. Not as fast as my old car but totally acceptable and it certainly gets out of its own way. Interstate ramps have been no problem and passing traffic is a breeze. The auto 6 speed is very smooth, the handling is great, the back of the seat is very comfortable, and there is plenty of room for all my gear. With the headrests off the back seats they fold down nicely making a huge cargo area and even with the seats up there is a generous area behind them. The 175 watt sound system is excellent and all the buttons, knobs, and gauges are in natural positions that I got used to in 2 minutes. The AC is very efficient and I love the visibility that the GT has. I am a power driver and I drive my cars very hard. I keep my vehicles for a long time (usually at least 10 years) and maintain them as they should be maintained, so I expect that this car will serve me well beyond the excellent warranty. I love the sporty look and have received many compliments on it. The second week I had the car I took an 1100 mile road trip and spent only $70 on gas. Other than the low seats I am a very happy camper!

I test drove basically every hatchback on the market (with the exception of the Kia Forte 5 and Dodge Caliber) before I purchased this car. This car was at the top of my list, even after driving other popular models (Mazda 3, Suburu Impreza, VW Golf, etc.). The front seats and steering wheel are excellent for comfort, the car is stylish on the inside and smartly designed, and it also comes with a surprising number of luxury features standard, like heated seats and fog lights. Everything about the layout makes sense, and the car felt immediately intuitive to drive, like I had been driving it for years. I do have gripes with the car, but they are mostly minor. For example, the back windshield cleaner doesn't work that well, the gas mileage is poorer than I would like (but not as bad as the rating), and the radio's sound quality is definitely not good. The acceleration and braking are also definitely pretty wimpy compared to cars like the Ford Focus or Mazda 3. However, I would buy this car again, knowing what I know now.

Well now it's been three and a half years with the Hyundai and being a hard-line GM guy I must say I'm still extremely impressed the car has more pick up and go then my brother's Audi A3 turbo which is not hard to believe since it has 175 horsepower and weighs 700 lb less than his Audi so that means it can move faster and with a pair of Kelly spring radials on it it can actually corner like a dime very impressed even with basic maintenance hyundai-kia have gotten a great combination in this model as basically a junior SUV didn't think I was going to be using a hatchback much after buying almost 30 years of four door sedans but it's been a lot of fun and a lot of extra room I didn't expect can get just about everything in this car possible including a 55 inch big screen full panel furniture and other things even camping that takes some small SUVs a hard time with the car is held up very very well especially after two rear-end accidents both not my fault and a sideswipe in the past three years even a 40 mile-an-hour rear-ender only put a dent in the rear fender and dislodged a couple of bolts which is exactly what it was supposed to do the car is held up very very well the interior is very adult the exterior is very nice and since this car was designed by the by the Audi designer Peter schreyer over 5 years ago it still has held its nice looks very well can't say more great things about it you need to ride and drive in one before making an opinion but overall in almost four years of driving it and I bought it used to begin with it's been a great car very happy keep up on 30k service as recommended . and really couldn't ask for a lot more fun, power and great handling and so much power that I really have to keep my foot off of it. Really gets 30 mpg in town and 35 hwy but likes arco and chevron gas ( top tier gas google it, doesnt like Costco but arco prices sre about the same) Treat yourself to a test drive stay with 2017 and below if thinking used for a budget. If thinking hybrid then grab a Nero ( kia same as hyundia ) or same as gt hatchback style is the very nice iconic all electric or hybrid models.. Blows away prius mpg numbers or any hybrids....hyundia is just as reliable as a toyota and much more functional and why more fun to drive.. Even uses real smooth 6 gear transmission ( like a sports car, not a ' cvt-rubber band" like toyota..) and all reviewer's live the detail and pep the hyundai have...feels like a sports car not a HYBRID , but bith my GT HATCHBACK AND. The hybrid version are inpressive....check them out. From a 25 year gm guy from 3.6 v-8. to this 175 hp gt hatchback...my malibu lasted 15 years..think this will to easy. GM was never this much fun...change the factory tires though and it..moves like the wind...jay

MPG only average, maybe 25-34. This cat handles great and is a lot of fun to drive. I drive it in ECO( gas saving control) and it has plenty of power. Plenty of room to store things in the front seats. Plenty of jacks to charge tour tech stuff. Besides the average gas mileage is that interior cabin is a little noisy on the highway. But at the price I paid, it is a great value! Just right after the 60,000 mile warranty expired, the rear pulley to the hatchback door broke. After 85,000 miles still only issue was above. Car isn't the greatest to travel . Going 70 miles an hour feels like 70.

I bought this car mainly for the reliability, and the space in the trunk for hauling things. I have the style package which adds rims and fog lamps. Many other Hyundai owners have approached me on how good this car looks. I have added a bike rack to the car roof, but I am also able to fit a bike in the back with the seats folded down. The interior is basic but nice. I did not want the tech package because I like how simple the stock controls are and do not want all the driver aids like rear view park assist. If you can't back up a car this small successfully you have bigger problems. The 2.0 motor is very peppy but the automatic trans keeps the revs very low for fuel economy. I wish there was a sport button. The ECO button makes the car stay too long in a high gear and makes it sluggish. At one point i got 40 mpg on a long highway trip but in town it drops sharply to about 28 mpg. The sports suspension makes the car very flat around corners at speed. I only have two complaints is that you have to get the bare bones base model to get the excellent 6 speed manual, also the center arm rest likes to slide forward if you are using it as a support to get in and out of the car. The A pillar is too wide and blocks your view at times.

I like the utility of a small hatchback. I shopped many different models. The Elantra GT was the best overall value. The most standard features and performance for he price. The Elantra GT has great performance, cargo room, and styling. The 173hp standard engine is more powerful than the standard engine in most other small cars. The handling is very quick and precise. ABS disc brakes at all four wheels is another nice standard feature. Fold down the rear seats and you have 51 cu ft of cargo space. Nice. If you are shopping for a small hatchback, compare this to the others.

Currently our family leases four Hyundais (Sonata Turbo, 2 Elantras and an Elantra GT) with the GT being the newest edition to the stable. We were a bit concerned that the GT would be too small (especially in the cargo area) but have been pleasantly surprised at the car's versatility. With slightly more horsepower than the standard Elantras, the GT is quite peppy around town and on the highway. The driver visibility is great and everyone in the family has enjoyed their turn putting the car through its paces. The fuel economy, as expected, is slightly less than a standard Elantra. Other than that we would certainly give the vehicle high marks for the first month that we have had it.

If you are looking for a nice commuter vehicle this is really a good choice. The ride is smooth and the 2.0L 173 Horsepower Engine is the same engine used for the 2.0L Turbo-Charged 245 Horsepower Engine used in the 2015+ Sonata. So minus the boost from the turbo, the engine is respectfully peppy, in particular when used in the sport shifting mode, keeping the engine in its maximum torque range, (3500 to 4500 RPM). It makes a very nice jump on to the highway. The digital steering control allows you to switch the steering feel mode from Normal> Comfort> Sport. Its a nice touch, in particular for a little fun on the curvy back-roads in my county. The sound system is quite good for the stock stereo system. It really doesn't need much more than it has. I would only add that some slightly better quality speakers would indeed make a difference. I say this because I spend much time in this vehicle and have a tendency to bring a laptop and watch movies with a patch-cord jacked into the AUX Outlet, to plumb sound through the vehicle's sound system. Needless to say action films tend to tax the speakers a little bit, so mine might be visiting my local stereo shop for a minor upgrade in that department. For this aspect I have to be realistic. Understand the Elantra GT is not based on the same body as the sedan. The vehicle is actually physically shorter by nearly a foot in length. So the back seats in this vehicle are OK for young kids, but teens or adults, forget it! I have fairly long legs, so the seat on the driver's side is nearly all the way back. However, if you are like my wife and I, and have no children, then this aspect really doesn't matter. The cargo area is great, I have no issues this this department. The rear seats in the hatchback have a double fold procedure to make the rear cargo area extremely large. For myself as a Firearm Instructor this is particularly important when I need to load my range equipment into this vehicle. The vehicle in total is very roomy, plenty of head-room and front leg room. If you are looking for a great vehicle, this is quiet a nice car for the price. I have the Option Package #2, which is the "Style Package". This comes with the 17 Inch Alloy Rims, Fog-Lights, 6 Speed Automatic/Sport Shift Transmission and Power Driver's Seat. There are many other bells and whistles with the GT Hatchback Model that does not come on the Sedan until you get into the other option packages.

28 mpg in town driving using Shell or Mobil regular. 38-42 mpg on highway trips. Had to replace 3 tires within 25 k miles. Warrenty took care of front wheel bearings replacement at 54 k miles. You will feel the bumps, but it handles well.

This car is the jack of all traits. I'm never asking more of it. I bought it with XXX,X33 miles on it. Right now I have X44,000 on it. Had it almost two year. Not one issue. Never asking for power. So fun to drive. I have all the features except the automatic transmission. The panorama sunroof is breathtaking. The leather is high grade. The sound system is better than most I've heard. I'm a pretty active 22 year old has great room for my friends and my items. Hyundai made the perfect car! Thank you!!!!

We've had our Elantra GT for about a week and are delighted with our experience. While the car appears small on the outside, it is roomy and airy on the inside. Some of the other cars we looked out felt cramped by comparison. From the first moment we sat in this car, we felt there was something right about ithis car compared to the other small cars we had looked at. The controls and seating position fell natural, the build quality is outstanding, and the head and shoulder room are abundant. The back seat also has plenty of headroom, something we found missing in other cars we looked at. On the road, the car has plenty of acceleration , handles well, and is fun to drive. _______ Update on car after two years and 23,000 miles. The car still feels very solid with no squeaks or rattles. The only thing that is showing any wear are the floor mats. Everything else looks almost new. The engine has plenty of power but the transmission hesitates a little before engaging passing gear. Other than this, the transmission is very smooth, something we really like about this car. Fuel economy ranges from about 20 mpg in stop and go traffic to 36 mpg on the freeway. We tried driving in the economy mode and found we picked up a mile or two extra miles per gallon, but the car felt sluggish in this mode. We prefer normal driving mode and are willing to sacrifice a little fuel economy for added performance. When it comes to hauling stuff, the Elantra GT acts like a small SUV. By folding the rear seat flat, we managed to fit a boxed, 55” TV from COSTCO into the luggage compartment. One of the things we like about this car is that it holds a lot of stuff without being a big car on the outside. When the rear seat is folded up and carrying passengers, two adults can fit back there comfortably, and a third person can be squeezed in for a short trip. Rear headroom is fine, but rear legroom is a little jammed unless the front seats are pulled up a little. For long trips, we find the Elantra GT comfortable but not luxurious. We have the Style package which includes sport tuned suspension and 17 inch wheels, leaving the ride a little firm for luxury but compliant enough for comfort. The seats and controls are great for the long haul. The OEM Hankook tires were replaced with Michelin tires which reduced road noise significantly while improving ride quality and handling. Overall, the Elantra GT strikes a good balance between handling and comfort making for an enjoyable driving experience on twisty, mountain roads. We found the OEM headlamps and foglamps a little dim for our purposes so we replaced the bulbs with LED’s and this change has vastly improved illumination for nighttime driving. We also found rear vision a little limited for parking so we added a rear backup camera. While there are a number of good cars that compete with the Elantra GT we found none that beat this car in overall balance for quality, performance, utility, style, and value. Our car came with a standard five year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a 10 year 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty to boot. Something Mazda, VW, Ford, Toyota, Honda and Subaru didn’t offer. Not only is Hyundai a quality product, they have the best warranty in the business to prove it. ............ Update 10-23-2020. We’ve had the Elantra GT for over five years with no problems. The paint looks new and the interior is holding up very well.

A. Traded my Sonata Turbo for the 2016 Elantra GT which is good looking with a nice engine/gearbox combination. Tech package with Nav works well, enjoying it! Leather heated and ventilated seats are awesome! Just put 1000 miles on it and am really happy. Quick, easy to park and economical.. so far so good! B. 7100 miles with no problems. Beginning to wish it had the "Paddle Shift" like the Sonata. Using the "auto shift" in manual mode is just ok. The car handles well and everything works. I noticed that the car pulls stronger as the revs climb toward red line, nice! Beginning to really enjoy the handling too. C. 12500 miles with no problems. Made it through the winter without any fuss, all the gadgets make this car easy to live with. The HD radio is great. D. No changes, still happy, the car is running well, I enjoy using the manual shiftronic sometimes. Just had it in for scheduled oil change and tire rotation - everything checked out well. E. 30000 miles and all is well. Car is performing as expected. Really liked the ventilated seats this past summer and am surprised at how well the a/c copes when it is hot. Also like how the engine makes a valve adjustment when traveling up hills.., feels like there is another gear in there. Still happy! Traded the Elantra GT (great car) for a new 2019 Sonata Plug in Hybrid SE in January..

The Three Year Update-The Little Car That Couldn't

Car is now three years old -- gas mileage is still abysmal. How can such a small car get such awful gas mileage? None of my previous small or mid sized vehicles got such bad mileage. The longer I drive it the worse it gets. Handling is terrible and the hamsters that power the engine don't like attaining merging speeds in any kind of time that one would deem reasonable. Thought about changing wheels out but dealer said it would void the warranty. Stuck with the car for a while now with buyers remorse. This is my third and last Hyundai. Car is a year old, and I have braking problems on freeway on and off ramps - dealers thought "you are driving too fast," fix...driving 15-20 mph on exits/entrances, irking all the drivers piling up behind me to avoid hitting the brakes bc braking on a tight right causes car to skip and shimmy. HORRIBLE gas mileage, such a little car should do way way better. Noisy interior...have to crank up volume to hear hands free conversations bc of interior noise. DANGEROUS oem tires, with less than 10k miles, within two months two sidewall failures. Of course Hyundai takes no responsibility and sidewall failure is not the responsibility of the tire manufacture either. Lose either way. Not to mention to replace with decent tires is $600 - 800 dollars, not worth it on this little budget car's 17" rims, except it is necessary for safety. Upside, you have a dangerous, gas guzzling, cute as heck car....

I love the backup camera and the navigation on the car. Great size car for downsizing without losing cabin space and storage.

I'm happy with my car so far I have it since new. Got enough power, roomy inside, Good value for the money you pay. My only concern is oil consumption, I reported to the dealer. They started to do oil consumption fallow up check it up every 1,000 km and after two or three oil change they determined it was normal. I guess the car consume 1/2 liter every 6,000 km. For me it's no normal so I have to keep an eye to the oil level.

Best car we ever had

Bought the car a year old as a dealer demo - had about 2,000 km on it. We had always bought larger vehicles to carry our 4 children but now that they've all left home we took a chance with a smaller car. Is very comfy on long drives, lots of room, good mileage and very reliable. Only complaint is the amount of plastic used in the fenders which crack easily (hitting a curb or snowbank). Overall a very good car and well worth the money.

Rather sad, but I felt it needed to be said. If it weren't for this vehicle, I would've lost a loved one. This car kept them safe, while they only got a minor scrape. The car did it's job to protect them and for that, I swear by Hyundais 100%.

This car Was amazing!! Until it hit the hundred thousand miles right when the warranty on the car expires. It starts catching problems. One of the big problems that it’s having is that this is my 3rd oil change In 2 months I read other places that a lot of other Hyundai users are having the same problems. The oil in the car is burning really fast. I got it checked out 4 times!! And nothing is wrong no oil leaks or anything. Sadly I would have to trade it in soon. As I can’t afford to get 2 oil changes every month to keep her running.

Ive had this car 10 days,, when you stop and put it in P it rolls. not far, but enough to make you stare at it, hoping you're seeing things..?? Called dealership, they said bring it in..oh sure. While I was driving today, the service engine light came on?? Wtf? Called again, they didn't make an appt , nor when I emailed the CEO. of DolanAuto , he hasn't emailed me back. I think I have their number now, take your money. literally, they sold me a 2k warrenty I didn't even know I purchaced until 3 days later?? How did they do that?? Thank god I cancelled it,( I think) Paying of car today too. I use my car for work, Im in and out of it all the time.. I make deliveries. It's important that the car STAYS in P! So, im disappointed, and my salesman didn't show me anything about bluetooth, the "folders" what it does, what do things mean. I guess im readin g the owners manual which is fine, was going to anyway.. Need that service light checked tho, and the worst part, I dont want to go into that dealership! I kinda told them how I felt when they "stole" 2k from me, and im still waiting to get my $!!! The car, tho, I do like it, I think!?

Make sure to ask question and test the vehicle

Starting with the USB port does not charge Iphones. In less then 3000 miles had to replace 2 front tires in my Elantra GT due too the tires being so low and not able to handle medium size potholes. If you live in a state with no pothole you will be fine but here in the Northeast after blowing the tire you will paranoid thinking if I am going to be left on the road again. The AM/FM reception is very poor. Gas mileage average at the moment is about 20 MPG.Also ask if you have a problem with the vehicle how long it will take to look at the vehicle( my dealer about 2 weeks ). 3d not available on the navigation system.

Gives a feel of a race car. Has a steering option that makes it tight on the road. Very nice.

Has a couple of ports for charging. Lots of room for storing glasses, lotions , flashlights near driver. Ride is pretty god for a relatively small and moderately priced vehicle. A bit of road noise ,from the tires, but just crank up the satellite radio that comes standard . Not the greatest of mpg, but you probably already know that. Pretty peppy if you take off the eco drive.

I love my '16 Elantra GT. I have the technology package and sports package on mine, so the tail lights are LED and the interior is leather with Navigation. I'm in love with this car. The panoramic moon roof is fantastic, it's such a cool little car! Love the look of it too!
