Poor shifting and infotainment assembly issues

Disappointed pilot owner., 03/17/2020
2019 Honda Pilot Touring 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
2 of 3 people found this review helpful

Purchased 2019 Touring model in Canada. Transmission shifting poorly and infotainment makes loud cracking noises through speakers. Bulletins in U.S. not available in Canada for poor shifting and Honda assistance is poor at best. Dealer seems to be in the dark but is trying. Infotainment issues are chronic across the 2019,2020 passport, pilot and ridgeline. The zf 9 speed has not been fine tuned enough as evidenced by continued service bulletins. Honda quality has dropped. Would not recommend purchasing until they address infotainment and 9 spd. Issues.

9 speed transmission terrible

Jen , 08/09/2020
2019 Honda Pilot Elite 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)
2 of 3 people found this review helpful

I bought the 2019 pilot elite and within 6 months I had a lot of complaints. The 9 speed transmission is terrible. It stalls and jolts anywhere in the 25-40 mph range. It literally freezes for a couple seconds and doesn’t accelerate. Sometimes it also makes a loud “thud” noise as if something has broken. The infotainment system is garbage. It freezes, turns off, drops calls or won’t even connect my phone. Now for the cooling system. The car literally cannot cool down on hot days. I can put it in my garage where it’s shaded, blast the air for 20 mins and can’t get the inside to go below about 78-80 degrees. Despite each complaint at the dealer under warranty, they have no fixes for the transmission. They simply do a reset on the infotainment system which doesn’t work or they blame it on my phones- which have been brand new and work in other cars. They also told me they reduced the air conditioning pumps from 2 to 1. I have them look at the car, they charge me for a loaner under warranty even when they need to look at it for more than a day and fix nothing because this is how the car was built. The brake light and notification comes on when nothing is around me- I have dropped the sensitivity on that to the lowest setting and it still goes off beeping at me for no reason. The entire experience has been awful and I have no desire to ever purchase a Honda again.

This is the first SUV I ever buy for myself as I am a truck guy. With my kids having outgrown the useful space in my 2007 Tacoma, I was forced to purchase something that could more comfortably carry people. Thus far, everyone is enjoying this vehicle. We are planning our summer road trip in this vehicle so that will be a true test for how well it holds up under constant use.

POOR BRAKES

patel, 10/07/2019
2019 Honda Pilot EX-L 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
2 of 4 people found this review helpful

Brakes are ridiculously slow. Brake response time is very slow even though speed is within 30 miles per hour or less. You literally have to push paddle completely down to the floor and even after that it won't stop immediately. Car stops very slow. So considering situation (driving in street and child pops up in front of car) if you have to stop suddenly you not gonna make it unless you use emergency brake of the car. Honda must fix the issue otherwise someone will lose life for sure. Also, weirdly car moved forward little bit when i just pushed start button to start the car even after brake paddle was pushed down position and touching gas paddle at all. I was bit surprised and thankfully it was in parking lot so didn't hit anyone. I am going Honda dealership to check with them if they can check and do something to make brake more responsive and tight. This is just second day of car and this crap happening. I am bit scared, disappointed and frustrated.

Do not buy the new Pilot. I own a 2019 and 2015 Touring editions and the 2015 is a much better vehicle. The 2019 is lacking comfort (driver seats is terrible), center console (the arm rest a small and cheesy), terrible road noise and worst of all when I start it, it sounds like a diesel engine. The 10 speed transmission cannot seem to find the right gear when going down hill and at times it shifts really hard. In my opinion, Honda went backwards in the new generation. There are many nicer SUV's out there like the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride and as soon it is financially feasible I am getting rid of my 2019 and still keeping my 2015.

TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS 20-30 MPH

PilotMD, 11/27/2021
2019 Honda Pilot LX 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

Looks like I am not the only one having this issue. When driving between 20-30 MPH transmission shifts roughly, does not happen all the time, but it is showing up more frequently. Honda Dealer just said could not reproduce the issue, but will recommend a transmission service at 29K miles. I feel a nightmare is about to begin, probably Honda will start charging me for services not needed till my warranty expires and the transmission replacement is on me.

The 2019 is a very comfortable and reliable vehicle. It can haul lots of things, tow our camper, plow thru snow/bad weather, and give a very comfortable long drive. The Honda sensing system is amazing and keeps everyone safe and sound. I've had it five years and it's still a solid vehicle.

What’s not to like about the 2019 Honda Pilot EX-L. After all it’s a Honda plus it’s equipped with just about any convenience package that makes your life easier such as remote starter leather upholstery and modern cabin and inviting dashboard. I’ve driven so many makes and models on the past and I’m back with this All American built Honda Pilot once again.

I've never had any issues with this vehicle. I suppose if there's a downside, its the number of recalls Honda has issued on this vehicle; I think I've had 4 so far. By comparison, my previous vehicle was a Honda Odyssey; to the best of my recollection, I only had to take it in once in 13 years for a recall.

Horrible ride

Driving this Honda Pilot is miserable and we regret the purchase every time we get into the car. The car is sluggish when accelerating, it jerks when shifting gears and makes awful knocking noises. We live in a large master planned community where the speed limit is 25 mph and driving this vehicle at any speed below 40 mph is absolutely awful. We have taken the car into Brandon Honda more than once and the service technicians have driven with us so that they can verify that what we are experiencing is valid and they have validated the issues. The problem is they claim that these issues are “Characteristic for the type of transmission in the vehicle”. What we experience on a daily basis driving this Honda Pilot is NOT characteristic of ANY fully automatic vehicle. This vehicle drives as though it is a 5 speed being driven by someone that doesn’t know how to drive a 5 speed. If in fact these abnormal, unpleasant “characteristics” are just how this vehicle was built to operate, then we should have been made aware of these flaws before we purchased the vehicle since they are not what we expected when purchasing this vehicle. We are very unhappy with this vehicle and do now want to keep this vehicle

Picked it up today. Beautiful car, rides pretty smoothly, tech works ok. One caution-headrests adjust up and down, don’t move forward or back. Thinking of buying a headrest pillow, as there is a little too much room between my head and the headrest.

Got my pilot brand new from the dealership and after a month i noticed a creacking sound underneath after driving it for a month. I brought my car in the nearest dealership and they can't figure out where is the sound coming from. And to my disgrace they created another annoying sound like ticking sound in front. Really disappointed with the dealership as well as Honda quality.

We bought our Pilot Touring new in May 2019, within the first 1000 miles my wife noted popping from the speakers. The audio will completely cut out and be replaced by loud popping and crackling noises. Turning the radio off does nothing, the popping continues even with no music being played. Restarting the vehicle doesn't resolve it, and neither does a hard reset (pulling a fuse). The rear entertainment system also rarely works and will frequently turn off when we're driving and our daughter is watching a movie. Several times in the last few months, the digital gauge cluster also turns off. Most of the time it turns back on within a minute or two, but shortly after will turn back off again. This sometimes coincides with the speaker popping issue, but sometimes will just occur on its own for no good reason. On a recent relatively short drive (30 miles), the digital gauge cluster shut off 5 times, we probably spent at least half of the trip unable to see our speedometer. My wife has resorted to using a speedometer app on her phone when this occurs. Pretty pathetic having to do this with a brand new $40k car. We've had the car at our Honda dealership 3 times now to have these issues resolved, and like many others, none of the repairs have actually fixed anything. We're in the process of scheduling an appointment to take it back in yet again, although I have absolutely no confidence that they will be able to resolve anything. For $40k+ I expected a lot more out of Honda, owning this car has been nothing short of a nightmare. At this point we're counting down the days until we have the loan paid off so we can sell this POS and buy something else.

Bought it new, has 45k on it now, no problems. FYI this vehicle does call for a every 15k 4quart transmission fluid flush, no big deal just $60 in parts DIY. Family feels safe and it gets 23mpg. Thinking about buying a second one.

Very Happy with our 8 passenger Touring AWD

OVERVIEW: Upgraded from a 2011 Pilot EX 8 Passenger which was great for our family. Never let us down and never gave us any problems. Just did regular maintenance and would have probably gone 300k miles. Found this used 2019 Pilot Touring with AWD, and 8 Passenger seating. It was in great condition. Exterior and interior colors were exactly what we wanted. Purchased it with aobut 74,500 miles on it, newish tires, roof rack rails (great for mounting a backback). No accidents and clean carfax. Overall, I'm super glad we got it. We hope we get 200k miles or more out of this Pilot just like we got on the old one The drivetrain is smooth and provides enough power to move us when all 8 seats are used. Lots of comfort and tech features came with this one. DRIVING: Very smooth transmission shifts. No gear hunting issues with the transmission like those reported on the earlier models, especially on the 2016. Feels more luxurious than sport which for us and the family, it's great. Plenty of power but you don't get one of these to race, you buy it for its utility, room, and to be a family hauler. You can use the paddle shifters in Sport mode. Not understanding why that's even a thing for an SUV but maybe for midlife crises. Maybe if it was a Range Rover with a supercharger but not on this thing but hey, if it makes you feel young and wild. Good on you. Comes with 4 AWD drive modes - Normal, Snow, Mud, and Sand. We'll be using snow for sure. COMFORT: It's super quiet inside compared to the 2011 model. Not as much road or wind noise like our old Pilot. The steering and suspension handles the road nicely, especially on our crappy California pothole-filled roadways. Lots of room. Nice leather seating with ample leg room. Feels a little bigger than our 2011 Pilot. Kids confirmed it feels a little bigger. Almost like the 2005 Toyota Sequoia we used to have. Front and middle row heated seats are great! Kids and I were happy about that. Adjustable armrests for front driver and passenger give good support. Plenty of leg room in 2nd row. Small adults and large kids in the 3rd row will be fine. Feels roomier than the 2011. Lots of cup holders. Seats are easy to move and adjust. Single push buttons to move the middle seats forward to get in and out of the 3rd row seats! Very nice. Easy to flatten them as well to give you room to haul stuff. Rear door sunshades are included in this trim as well. Not sure if we'll use them since the tint that came with the Pilot is pretty dark. Sunroof with tilt comes with this model, too. Entertainment and Technology: The entertainment system is really nice. 8in touch screen with Apple CarPlay (Android Auto as well) is excellent. Love how GPS displays on the screen while having the ability to have other apps open on the phone. 10 Speakers sound great. The multiple information dashboard can be customized. Looks sleek. Tachometer is useless and can be hidden. The screen is big, bright, colorful and I set mine to show the tripometer information - miles driven, MPG, and range. You have other options - Nav, AWD torque distribution, entertainment info, etc. Outside temp, ECON mode, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-Keep Assist System, safety systems, and other indicators are on-screen. Rear entertainment system has yet to be tested but it can play Blu-Ray discs and has an HDMI port and AC plug for another input source. Comes with 2 wireless headsets and a remote control as well. So far, we found 4 USB charging ports. Are there more? We'll see. There are lighter ports available as well in case you need more power. Can't wait to figure out CabinTalk when we go on a road trip. You can communicate both ways with the rear passengers using the internal mics, speakers, and Rear entertainment headsets. The motorized rear tailgate with hands-free kick motion open and close is nice to have as well. Keyless entry system with auto-unlock and walkaway auto-locking features are included as well. Remote start is also included with the Touring trim. Another feature that I've never had other than on rental cars. LOL. Safety: Bright LED headlights and well-designed daytime running lights. Auto high-beam LED headlights were a nice surprise. The Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane-Keep Assist are freakily awesome. I've never had a car with that kind of feature so if you're laughing, BE QUIET! Keep your hands on the wheel though because it's not perfect. The camera and sensors can get confused. But they're good to have for safety and driving assist, especially on long rides on open highways. Blindspot monitoring, rear cross-traffic sensing, and parking sensors are included and help in those situations. I always disable the collision mitigation feature due to potential problems with the system potentially braking at wrong and dangerous times. There is a class action lawsuit for CR-V and Accord owners about this. It's the same Honda Sensing system. I have no problems with manually disabling it and it can be changed while driving if I forget. CONCLUSION: I am very happy with the purchase. Love the way it drives. Love the technology features. Plenty of room. Comfortable. Apple CarPlay. RES. I always buy used cars and although I was a little concerned with some of the negative reviews regading the modern tech and transmission, I think this was great upgrade and I have not noticed any issues so far. I always get a warranty either from the dealer or the financing company just in case because you never know. I got my financing company's this time. It covers the same stuff as Honda's up to 75,000 additional miles or for 60 months. Good for my peace of mind. I've had to use it on my son's old Lexus, and saved us tons of money.

2019 Honda Pilot Elite AWD, maintenance is very reasonable; probably one of the cheapest in its field. HP and acceleration is very good for its class. 3rd row seating is good for 6' and under may have to slide 2nd row seats up.

I really am enjoying this SUV. It has exceeded my expectations so far, and I would highly recommend it. I have driven it all across the USA, and it has given me no problems. I slept in the back quite comfortably, and I am 6' 4". It is such a comfortable ride, with all of the best features and bells and whistles.

I bought this car in July of 2019. The same year the infotainment started mis-functioning. The screen goes blank while I was driving. I took it to Honda dealers more than 5 times with the same issue never got fixed. Recently the transmission oil started leaking, luckily the car is still under warranty.

Bought a 2019 Pilot EX-L in October 2018. 14 months and 21000 miles later and have had zero problems. Decent gas mileage for a SUV. Very comfortable on long trips. A couple of nitpicks. Needs a compass; shouldn't be forced to buy the navigation system to have a simple compass (probably a 25 cent micro chip). A mid-cycle refresh and no electric parking brake; c'mon Honda. Passenger's armrest needs to be adjustable; I can't use it when I'm the passenger. I get many compliments for the Dark Forest Pearl paint. I have seen a Passport in this same color but never another Pilot.

Bought car brand new off lot and at 23k, the car is still moving along no problems. The transmission is smooth and we are in love with the comfort and handling. Felt it was great price for the options we have.

Lift won’t open when battery is dead

I volunteer for a dog rescue which includes taking various dogs to and from vet appointments. This is now happened to me twice. Because I usually have multiple dogs I need to sit in the parking lot and wait for the vet tech to come and get one at a time. Because I did not want to run the car I turned it off at some point and then hit the button just to turn on the system but not the car. Within 30 minutes I turned it completely off and tried to start the car but the battery was dead. It’s nearly impossible to jump the car because of the covers over the battery you can’t get the jumper cables to the negative prong. What’s worse is when the battery dies the back hatch of the SUV will not open. Of course this is where you store your jumper cables. What’s really concerning is how dangerous it is since it’s 100° in San Antonio today and I was unable to open the hatch to get multiple rescue dogs out of the heat. Why Honda would design an SUV that the back hatch will not open when the battery is dead it’s just stupidity on their part. Highly recommend that you never crate your dog in the back of the Honda SUV because you would never be able to get to the crate to get them out of a situation I have found myself in twice. I bought a Honda pilot with three rows specifically to have room to take rescue dogs to and from appointments. How do I know that the hatch open when a battery is dead I never would’ve bought it. Beware dog owners

The rear drivers door sticks out close to a 1/2 inch at the top right allowing a ton of road noise. The stereo has a loud crackling sound at mid level on up. And both usb and charging covers on the dash are missing. Honda's quality control is not what it used to be. So far Honda has not gotten back to me regarding all issue. Again, LOOK REAL CLOSE before buying.

Do not buy 2019 Pilot

We had a 2017 honda pilot bought new, and it had the worst huck a buck in the transmission around 22-26 mph, then I replaced it with a new 2019 pilot, for the first 8,000 miles it was great and we thought ok, were good. Then the issues with the transmission started, same thing as the 2017. But whats strange is it is worse on some days then others. The other day my wife was going through a intersection and accelerated up to 22 mph but then had to take her foot off the gas, then went to reaccelerate and the car just sat there for a sec or so. Good thing she didn't need to get out the way. There is nothing honda can do, the transmission was designed to learn as you drive but depending how you drive, if there are multiple people driving the car, essential the car gets confused about where the shift points need to be. Supposedly you can by a part that by passes part of how the transmission works, but that seems ridiculous on a almost $50k vehicle. Anyway getting rid of it this year and will never buy another honda.
