Good SUV but pulls to the right

Michael, 10/15/2010

Overall a good car. Had a previous Nissan Armada and got tired of driving a "School bus". Overall fit and finish is great. Main problem is that the car is pulling to the right. Had to bring the car in 4 times and finally after driving with the tech, they agree that it does indeed pull to the right. (why it took them 4 times to acknowledge this is beyond me) It pulled to the right from day one. Make sure you test drive your car before you buy it. There is a service bulletin out (which the dealer had no idea about and did not divulge this, I had to research this) and check your VIN number. In fact just don't buy this car if it is listed within the service bulletins VIN #.

We drove every midsize SUV there was available and it came down to the Toyota Highlander and the Honda Pilot. The Toyota drove better, more like a car, but it only seated 7 people. The Honda was closer to real 4WD (still not real but close) and seated 8...a real 8 full sized adults. Some that seated 7 really only seated 5 adults and 2 kids in the 3rd row. In the end we needed the full 8 seats and while the interior does not have much style to it, it is functional. I wish I would have waited another year as Bluetooth became a standard interior feature that was only available on the Touring in 2010. Other than that this is a great midsize SUV to own. 2016 Update: Still running great and no major issues. We had a reading light burn out but other than that no problems at all. The only downside of this vehicle in 2016 is that it is just a year or two too old to have technology like bluetooth. That being said if you want a pseudo 4-wheel drive vehicle you will have no complaints with the 2010 Honda Pilot. I say pseudo only because it does not have locking axles like say a Jeep, but the 4-wheel drive is plenty sufficient for the average driver who may occasionally need some extra traction in grass, mud, ice or snow. 2017 Update: All still good...no major issues. I haven't bothered to fix the reading/map light but no other issues to report.

A Good (Not Great) Vehicle

Bought in 2011 with 40k miles, just turned 94k. She's been fairly reliable, just oil changes/brakes/tires up to this point. I was told brakes were the weak point on Hondas. My brakes constantly warp. Interior quality is ok, seats are very sturdy and comfortable for long drives/trips. The armrests and center console have torn and bubbled, respectively. Enough with the bad though. I'm a big fan of the automatic eco mode that turns off two cylinders while cruising to maximize mileage. I average 19.5/20 mpg a tank. I like the aux outlet for the radio also. Sound system is decent for a base model. It has surprisingly held its value over the years. Big safe vehicle that I would recommend to anyone

Horrible interior quality

I've been a loyal honda consumer for years!! Although I love my pilot I am very disappointed on the quality of the interior. The center arm rest completely tore. I mean, I paid extra for leather interior, come to find out that center arm rest is absolutely not leather but a super thin plastic material. The door arm rest also has torn. Same cheap material. I don't get it. I'm not an abusive driver or car owner. I am very careful with my cars. Very disappointed.

I traded my 06 4runner in on this car. While this has what I am looking for, smoother ride, more room inside, I agree with some posts on here, quality seems cheaper than my past Honda's. Also be sure to drive this car at a highway speed around 65-75 mph. Seems that they all have a lot of wind noise around the front rear edges of the doors where the windows seal. First car I have owned in 10+ years to have this kinda of window open/air leak sound. Disappointing for a 30k+ car. Otherwise, the car pulls my boat even better than my 4runner despite less hp and torque. So far only one odd issue with dome lights but hasn't happened again.

FANTASTIC RELIABILITY & SAFETY

Pilot Owner TX, 03/14/2017
2010 Honda Pilot EX-L 4dr SUV 4WD (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

Owned for 7 years and NEVER had anything malfunction. Was rear ended by a new Ford Explorer and I was able to drive the Pilot safely away after a 60+mph impact which destroyed the Ford. I was unharmed; unfortunately the person who hit me had to be extricated and was injured. The Pilot's cabin was NOT compromised and the rear window did not break. THIS is the type of 3rd row build you want with kids in a car! I will be getting a new Pilot soon - it did nearly $14k damage to the old one and over $32k to the Ford Explorer. Someone will salvage the old Pilot as it still runs like a champ. This car NEVER had to go in for any repair whatsoever prior to getting rear-ended - nothing! I've owned a lot of vehicles but this Pilot epitomizes RELIABILITY and SAFETY. Just check iihs for safety ratings.

We bought new in 12/2009, so have had for 3.5 years and only have 30k miles on, so mostly city driving. Never been in the shop except for oil and tires. Tires are 60k Michelins that wore out at 28k, but Michelin prorated replacement. It is a well thought out car when compared to competitors and much better value than the competitors. Engine is adequate, but certainly not a V8. Mileage is a little below represented, but likely 10% Ethanol in Gas is largely to blame. Thanks government. Get 21 Hwy and 16 City. Very stable on Hwy and great in snow. Third row is great and large carrying capacity when both rows down. Would definitely purchase again.

This was our first Honda Pilot. We wanted a large safe vehicle for a new family. I have owned this vehicle for 6 years and it has just over 100k miles. The armrest on the door and center consoles have ripped some time ago, just as others have stated. We are not rough with our vehicle. Our CD changer no longer works and I've already had to rebuild the transmission. We had a really weird issue where the batteries kept dying and found that a relay for the air conditioning unit was getting stuck. Various mechanics and the dealer could not find this issue costing as few hundred dollars, thank goodness for the piloteer blog. The vehicle just started to develop a strange noise at the right passenger front tire. The inside of the cabin is not very quiet. The glove box won't open any more. The fake Chrome on the grill has started to peel. I'm so disappointed with my first experience with a Honda Pilot. The quality of materials is so poor . The best part is the cargo space.

I purchased my first Honda in 1985; I have purchased one every 5 years since. Once purchased, I never had to worry outside of routine maintenance. Around the year 2000 I started noticing minor issues and a decline in the fit and finish. The dealership would always pooh pooh my concerns and never find anything wrong. I purchased a 2005 Pilot 6/05 that developed major electrical problems at 100k miles. I traded it for a 2010 Pilot 3/10. I had it in the shop 3 times the first 3 weeks, 6 times the first 6 months. The blew me off with the sunroof issue. Now I have electrical problems, the drivers door won't open and close properly, the list goes on.

We bought our Honda Pilot in May 2012, and absolutely love it! It's super roomy and there is so much space in the back (3rd row seats down) that we went on a road trip with 2 little kids and still had plenty of room to put more luggage in the back. I take it out to construction jobsites and love how it drives like a truck through rough terrain, but yet it feels smooth and sturdy when I'm on the freeway. This is an SUV we are going to keep until the wheels fall off. If you have little kids, you might want to buy seat covers if you have the cloth seats, as they do tend to stain easily.

It handles like a truck and not an SUV on a uni-body chassis as claimed. It is under powered and not very responsive. I travel for work and have had other SUV's that put Pilot to shame in terms of performance. DVD navigation is already outdated, don't pay for it, use your phone and have better technology. Voice recognition is horrible. No other way to add/delete/pair phones. I rented a Toyota and it took less than 15 seconds to learn how and pair a phone. Plus it played music through BT. Sound system in this "loaded" Pilot sounds horrible. Honda will not be on our short list when it's time to replace. They've lost touch with what's important to consumers, hence Civic redesign.

I purchased my Pilot in November of 09 so it is one year old now. I have not experienced any of the problems that others have mentioned i.e. chipping paint, pulling to the right and moonroof problems. I am really happy with the way the car drives. The mileage could be better but, the mileage is what the sticker said it would be. I don't understand why so many reviewers say they are so surprised with the mileage they get? The navigation system is wonderful and I really love having the back up camera and noise sensors. There is only one thing I don't like. It has two empty places on the driver's left hand side of the dash. What are they there for? It makes it look like something is missing

Ended up trading this car in over an oil consumption issue that was causing problems to spark plugs, timing belt, etc. Would not purchase the Pilot between ‘09 and ‘13 based on my experience but otherwise loved the car.

My girlfriend purchased a Pilot. We looked at all of its competitors in class, and the Pilot was the undeniable standout. We took it to Colorado and put it through the paces - EXCELLENT comfort, good views, handles superbly offroad (we went on some really craggy/bumpy rock roads ... steep too). The rear-diff lock is a definite plus (and helpful in steep spots). The Pilot is incredibly comfortable, exceptionally roomy. She got the EX-L, and its comfort and ride are awesome. Only negative is that the steering is heavier than some might like, but that makes it really solid at highway speed. The backup mirror is VERY useful. It eats gas (we got 23 mpg between Tucson and Telluride).

This thing is generally bulletproof if you are on the maintenance. The maintenance minder system is for crap on the oil life. If you let the oil changes go to what the minder says you'll fry your motor, or at least have expensive repairs. When the cylinder banks are disengaging/engaging for ECO mode (which is seemingly all the time) and your oil is towards the end of it's useful life you will see failure in the rings and then your cylinder(s). To combat, we use full synthetic and change when the minder says 50% life left. It's not really 4WD, it's AWD and you have an option to lock out. It's plenty capable if it needs to be but it's nothing like it's "competitor" the 4 Runner. My biggest complaint is the cabin noise, it's awful, had Cooper's, No BFG, going to Michelin next. Bearings check out, suspension parts all replaced (which is a really simple DIY), still loud. Oh well. Middle seat slides which is cool, 70/30 split. 3rd row is fine for small people. Plenty of videos on how to make simple repairs. It's really as simple as timing job every 100k and the normal stuff that wears out. Has some quirky things that some are covered by Honda and some are cheap (less than $10) fixes. Whoever was making the map lights for this generation of Pilot must have been sleeping at the wheel. They all fail, the sunroof auto-open function is included in this piece, it's just pure junk. I do feel it looks better than the minivan light they put on the road for the most recent model, similar to when Nissan ruined the Pathfinder, the prior generation was just better, as is this one.

If you want to be left on the side of the road waiting for a tow, purchase this SUV. The first time the engine misfired and broke down the truck was 3 months old. We thought nothing of it, but the 2nd time it was 3 years old so we investigated and found out about the class actions suite. (Google Honda Pilot class action suite misfire) Nothing like being on a road trip to the north for Christmas fully packed with a baby and a small child and breaking down in rural PA. After the truck was repaired and Christmas was over I drove it straight to a Ford dealer and traded it for new Explorer. I will never purchase another Honda.

We are repeat Pilot owners of a 2004 and a new 2010 Pilot. We really like the new body design and this time we went with the higher end model with leather, rear entertainment and a sunroof. I had the car in for an air leak in the sunroof which gets worse at speeds over 55 MPH. Dealership service team said this is normal and I disagree.

I have the Pilot EX-L w/RES. I don't have any children, but I like to do a lot of whitewater trips and I bought the Pilot because I can sleep in it, carry a lot of people for shuttle and carry a lot of boats. I have equipped it with a Thule rack that fits onto the already beefy luggage rack bars. I'm thinking the RES will come in handy on boring car trips. I've had it for 8 months and am loving the comfort and having just weathered 2 big snow storms, I can attest it is a beast in the snow, considering it doesn't have true 4wd. Mileage sucks, mostly because of my daily commute being stuck in stop and go traffic. When I get out on the open road, I have gotten 22 mpg.

My wife and I were trying to decide between the 2010 Pilot Touring and the Buick Enclave EXL. The Enclave is nicer to look at than the Pilot but a bit too expensive (EXL w/o Nav or DVD $39k). The Pilot Touring model with Nav, DVD, Bluetooth, and HFL cost us $36k so we went with the more cost effective option. We are very glad we made this decision because it rides beautifully and the 3 kids absolutely love the new toy! It gets about the same gas mileage as our old 2000 Odyssey so we're not too concerned. I'll be adding the after- market chrome running boards and chrome mesh grill next week to make it prettier. If you're gonna buy a Pilot, the Touring model is the way to go!

Great SUV with a few quirks

The 2010 Pilot is a pretty good vehicle overall with just a few minor quirks. I will say first that I find the official Edmunds review on this car to be a bit harsh. Even with almost 150,000 miles I find mine to be a solid, good performing vehicle. Acceleration is pretty good (albeit with one person inside - I haven't had five passengers plus a boat behind me - just to be fair). Braking isn't anything special but I never feel unsafe or doubt this vehicle's ability to stop. It handles like it's as big as it is, no getting around that. Even with the miles it has it rides very well. I like the almost 23 mpg on the highway too. As soon as you hit cruising speed it shuts down several cylinders and saves you gas, unless you're going like 80, then it requires all 6. Cargo capacity is cavernous, and I love the rear glass that opens separately. I plan to stick a kayak in the back later this year! I like the white 3D gauges too - I know they are a bit controversial, depending on who you ask. My complaints are relatively few. I do think the interior materials could be improved a bit. The dash materials are a bit hard with some bad gaps. If it were an entry level Kia I wouldn't say anything, but for a vehicle that approached $40k new it's a bit of a turn off. The green trim around the radio looks nice in pictures on Edmunds, but it's starting to crack and fall off on my Pilot. I also don't particularly like where the gear selector is. I smack my hand on it a lot if I'm not careful. The sound system is decent, but I have the DVD package, and therefore the upgraded audio with additional speakers, and thought it might be just a bit better. The transmission in in my vehicle also shifts a bit rough, especially into overdrive at highway speeds. I plan to investigate that further soon and will update if needed. In my case I bought my car with a great warranty, even at its age, but definitely check this out if you're looking at one. This car is my secondary, kayak hauler, beater, foul weather, trip to the lumber store vehicle, not necessarily my daily driver, or so I thought. I actually drive it more than I intended to, because I enjoy it that much. If you're looking for an older SUV this is a great choice overall. I'll also say that I enjoy the boxy styling, unlike the newer Pilots and most other crossovers these days. Definitely put this one on your list!

Love, love love this truck. It was my first SUV and it was the perfect fit for my family. Plenty of room for a growing family and perfect for vacations. A couple of problems here and there, but I was able to get close to 215,000 miles in 8 years out of this vehicle. I believe I could have gotten a little more mileage from the truck but it was starting to need repairs and I thought it was best to trade it in.

The Pilot is built like vault. Feels very stable and solid on the road especially highway. Compared it to a Toyota Highlander but finally chose pilot as it is wider and lot more comfortable for ALL 8 occupants. Also note that the curb weight is 500 lbs higher than that of highlander giving it a slightly lower mileage but more solid feel.

After a lot of research narrowed it down to Highlander and Pilot. Test drove each 2 times and concluded that Highlander is actually a 4 seater with lots of cargo space and in that case my present Camry was already doing that job. So we went for Pilot knowing that it is a gas hungry vehicle compared to highlander or other SUV's of similar class. Chose 4x2 as I don't do much of activities demanding 4x4. Ride is smooth much like an SUV/Truck than a car which I felt in highlander.

I bought this 2010 Pilot new and it seemed to be the best car I have ever owned. It runs very well and I love the size and features it came with. A few years of owning it I received a letter from Honda that stated its supplier used dissimilar metals in the rivets. This will cause the tailgate to rust prematurely so they added a 7 year warranty. Sure enough my tailgate had rust bubbling through the paint just after reading the TSB at a place that a car shouldn't even rust. I had it repaired and it looked great. Just after the warranty expired the rust came back FAST. I called Honda and they will do nothing about it now. They "fixed" it to last just past the warranty and now I am stuck with a rusty tailgate due to Honda's cheap discount .01 rivets. I thought they had a lifelong customer but their customer service changed my mind. Update. Rust really coming though. Looks like the old Hondas from the late 70’s.

Great interior room and cargo capacity. 3 rows of seating or a monster cargo hold. Overall reliability has been very good, issues with the radio, premature tire wear and brakes.

I bought a 2010 Pilot on 3/2010. The first problem I had was the TPMS light was on the entire time. The sales person said to drive it and it was go off and if it is still on come back and we'll fix it. So we drove it for one day and took it back the following week. They looked into and said its the sensor. So they replaced it and then we picked it up again and it came back on. It was so fustrating. So then we took it back again and they keep my car for 2 weeks. This time it wasn't the sensor. It was the wire that was installed incorrectly. My boyfriend took a picture and showed me. They had to take the whole dash board off to rewire everything.

Traded in our 08 Accord in Nov. 09 for our 10 Pilot LX. First thing we did was go to ebay & bought (4) Touring wheels (Brand new). Then we bought the running light kit from a Honda dealer in Ohio. I then bought a custom grill kit from CarID in Ca. and two chrome pipe extensions. We also bought the faux chrome strips that go in the door guards. After taking off that goofy looking grill, installing the awesome billet grill (2 pc. upper & lower) installing the running lights and exhaust extensions and door chrome this LX is awesome. The good part.... I saved $4500 by doing it myself. Absolutely love the big roomy SUV.... have driven it to Florida and back and to Ohio and back. # 1 car

Best SUV in its class for the $

We researched every SUV in this segment and hands down for the $$ the Honda Pilot EX-L w/ DVD is the best product. I do not agree with the Edmunds review or some of the others I have seen. For prospective buyers, I would test drive and come to your own conclusions. We got this vehicle for invoice $32814 (MSRP 36155) and they threw in the front door window tint and pin stripe. I paid $261 to get the trailer harness wiring installed.

Before purchasing a 2010 Honda Pilot, I would urge a sense of caution!! I purchased mine in Aug 2009. Within 2 weeks I wished I hadn't. There is a terrible dash reflection on the driver's side window that if the sun is in the right position obliterates the side view mirror. To check the oil is just plain poor design. The access to the dipstick cable really is dismal. You can't even see the port to reinsert the "stick" so you need to have your fingers go directly to the port to guide the "stick" to assure that it goes in and avoids getting any outside grime into the oil. To get oil in the fill port-really poor. If you're on the road without a funnel you'll get a 1/2 qt in for every qt.

I purchased this vehicle for my wife. So far she loves it very much. We don't see the problem of pulling to right. Although I can feel this is a solidly built vehicle, some cheap interior parts do ruffle on bumpy road. The road noise is pronounced. For short person (my wife is 5'3''), the blind spot is big.

It is a solid car with quite interior and all amenities that you would find in most cars in its class. It drives very nicely. I tested every SUV in the class and the Pilot was the best. Meets all of our needs. I like the boxy look because it stands out with all of the curvy homogeneous looking SUVs and crossovers. About the fuel economy. This vehicle weighs 4500 lbs, carries 8 people + baggage. On a per person basis, the fuel economy is very good. When it comes to total value = handling, space, power, features, total cost of ownership this SUV is unbeatable.

This is a large comfortable vehicle that rolls like a vault at highway speed yet is nimble in town, a joy to drive with people, amazing, very large items will fit inside with 2ond & 3rd tier seats down..as my work platform taking calls the large cockpit functions well with many storage spaces and flat areas to take notes..drive- train and suspension are Honda benchmark quality and I'm really hooked on the appearance now..did the 60/2.9% finance and TMV pricing..difficult to beat over time.

This is my 3rd Honda Pilot and I wouldn't even think of buying any other brand. I've never had any major work done on my other two and that makes this vehicle a major winner. More than just reliable. It handles wonderful, feel safe on the road and loaded with lots of extra goodies. If you're looking for luxury with a lot of safety and reliability, this is the vehicle for you.

If you haven't been inside the new Pilot, then I suggest you give it a try. This thing is in a different ballpark than the pre 2009 designed Pilot. Here's the thing with the Pilot. We looked at a ton of crossovers, we have 3 smallish kids and when you're looking for room, utility, comfort, a truck feel with a car-like drive, this is it. Take the Mazda CX-9 for example. We climbed all over it but, in the end it was a car pretending to be a utility vehicle. Same with the Ford Flex. The Pilot feels like a truck but drives like a car. When we sat in the Pilot it felt huge. We traded in our Honda Odyssey and feel at home in the Pilot. I'm thrilled with it so far.

We purchased this vehicle to replace our 2004 Ford Explorer. We looked at the Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9. Our criteria was 4WD, third row seat, class 3 trailer hitch, good resale value, quality and gas mileage at least in the low 20's. As soon as I sat in the Honda I felt right at home. The controls, storage spaces, seats, everything just felt better. We've driven it on one trip and have put about 1.5K mile on it. The gas mileage is as advertised. No regrets.

Just bought a 2010 Pilot at Boch in Norwood, EX-l w/res; the purchase experience what one of the best I have had I would recommend if you're in the mkt go there. As for the car, it's for my wife and she is very happy that we bought it. I think the interior is not reflective of the price paid (too much plastic) and I agree with the sluggish comments on the engine it sound have more pep! The tire pressure light already went on, called the dealer they said to come in to service so they can review, great. I will make sure to give an update in 6 months or so. good luck

Good ride, very roomy inside, great cargo capacity with seats down. Alternators: replaced 2 or 3 times now, I've lost count, last time under 12 month repair warranty (6 months then died again). Problems with actuators: Rear view mirror actuators, AC mode actuator, Rear AC mode actuator. Mileage not very good either, but the thing is huge, so not expecting too much.

I test drove 4 SUVs before I decided to buy the Pilot. The SUVs I test drove were -MB GLK350 -MB ML350,Toyota Land Cruiser, Honda Pilot The reason for me to choose the Pilot were Honda built quality/reliability. Everything I wanted is all inclusive (ex.BT, Nav, rear DVD, etc.). Size and functionality of large SUV. -Drives and rides like a 4-door sedan. Compared to other SUVs, Honda gave me a better deal.

i bought pilot over highlander only because of my concern over the untested toyota's syncro transmission. Pilot has some troubling flaws. lots of highway wind noise, grinding/pulsating in anti lock brakes at right front upon turning (dealer says normal), gas makes loud sloshing sound when tank full (is that why the tank was not full at test ride), upgraded radio has volume limited and mine pulled to the right off the lot which dealer blamed on curvature of the road. But have owned hondas in the past, and looking to own this car long term. time will tell if i made a good investment.

Just the right size. Bigger than our old 2000 Explorer. Rides MUCH smoother and 10 times quieter and more refined. Steers perfectly straight, has very steady wheel, so don't be put off by all that pulls right talk! 24 mpg on hwy, 18 in city, 20.5 mixed. Not bad for 4000lb SUV - it is a Honda, but not a Civic or Accord, so be realistic. Super quiet, comfortable, handles great, good power. This SUV deserves a very close look if you are in the market.

Overall, very satisfied. Primarily used by my wife who drives 1/2 mile to work one way. Mileage is bad but with wife's short commute, this isn't that critical. Engine compartment fuse box cover was missing and only discovered after getting vehicle home. This necessitated a trip back to dealer. Ride on highway not bad at all for a "truck". Acceleration and braking seem fine. Additional room from the 2007 Pilot we turned in at lease-end is a plus. Bothersome that the roof rack is a $400.00 extra. Other than that, no complaints.

For those folks who think this vehicle "floats" away while trying to steer, or pulling to the side , my advise is don't drink and drive. Honda I believe uses a technology called power on demand responsive steering. So get used to it. My old pilot has 125,000 miles and I just got another one last week. After 125,000 miles my old car still runs just as good as the brand spanking new one. So that should tell you about the quality.

Our Family purchased our 2010 Honda Pilot in late 2009 thinking we were getting the best option out there as the car was new and pretty advanced for the time. Though design was always questionable we bought it to see what will happen. Within he first couple years we were naive enough to think it was a good car. It was perfect until 3 years after owning it we were in a rear end incident and it protected us but one of us had a fracture in the neck bone. I do believe this could've been avoided if the car had bigger rear headrests and more structural support. The car after repaired continued to have continuous issues. Some of them are not even resolved today (fan jamming in A/C. ) the car is simply unreliable and it is cheap. For our top of the line model it was $40,000 and for hat I do not want to see cheap plastic and seats with no support . I would've rather bought a 2 row SUV that would've been nicer. So please stay away from this car. Looks can be deceiving. I don't want you to look at it everyday when you need to go somewhere and just keep on thinking about the day you will get rid of it. I have had a horrible experience with Honda and Acura , I am done with them altogether. Thanks for listening.
