2019 Honda Passport Elite 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)

Six years of ownership and I still really like this vehicle. There is a tremendous amount of electronic safety features that if you are coming from an older model car it can be intimidating. I have been waiting for an SUV that had over 75 cubic feet of cargo space without a third row of seats, a six cylinder, and finally this one fits the bill. It is extremely quiet and well built. The forward sensors that control a variety of electronics are positioned behind the windshield by the rear view mirror. So if your windshield gets a crack or rock, you will need to have a Honda windshield installed. It is best to purchase the extended warranty. I will say that a number of articles said that is had poor acceleration but I think it is fine. Yes, one would expect more from a six cylinder but not when you take into consideration that it weighs over 2 tons. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle. After 66 months of ownership, this is still a smile producing vehicle every time I drive it. The one annoying aspect is the amount of time the computer uses to change gears from reverse to drive.

Have had our Passport(Touring) for 2 weeks now, initially went to go buy a Pilot for my wife. Wasn't even close, nothing against the Pilot. We didn't need the 3rd row anymore so it made our decision even easier. The new look of the Passport and all the interior features along with how it handled made the difference. We traded in a Acadia Denali and was the best purchase we ever made. Honda did it right bringing the Passport back and the new look grabbed my attention as soon as I saw it on the showroom floor. We have 3 kids and still with no 3rd row, it is plenty of room for a trip down to Hilton Head, and all of my girls are older. Impressive car, take it for a spin and you will see!!!

Problems with this new passport

I bought my passport in February. Immediately I noticed some issues with the sensors. The crash mitigation system is supposedly designed to reduce rear end collisions. When I drive on a 2 lane road and a car is coming at me from the opposite direction my car will flash “BRAKE” and put on the brakes rather aggressively. Honda‘s response? We put it in the handbook, that can happen, with a shadow or a building or a hard breeze also, they are just sensitive. Additionally when it rains my car will flash “APPROACHING OBJECT” and beep incessantly. The only way to stop it is to put the car in park and/or turn off the engine. Honda‘s response? As long as we can duplicate that we will fix it. They put a water hose on it and duplicated it. They then kept my car for a week. After a week they said they don’t have a fix for it. Sorry. I told him I couldn’t drive a car like that and I needed to get out of it. They told me to come up and they would give me the greatest deal to move into a different vehicle. The sales manager said his passport that he is driving is doing the same thing. I told him you didn’t pay for it you’re just given it to drive because you’re the manager. He said it’s a Honda issue not his. I am very disappointed in Honda. I will continue to contact them about this issue. Update: After my poor experience at the dealership with the manager telling me it was Honda‘s problem and not his and offering me anything but a great deal I received a request to review the dealership. They told me they would give me a great deal to trade out of the Passport it into something else. The great deal was sticker price on another car and $6000 upside down on the passport. The upside down part I can somewhat understand but it was a horrible deal. I rated the dealership and the sales team as a one. I also rated the service department as a one. That was my experience. Very shortly after I submitted that the manager of John Eagle Honda called my phone and started screaming at me asking me why I gave him a one. I told him it was because of the way that they treated me at the dealership. Telling me that they were going to fix my car and then not. Telling me to come up that they would give me a great deal and then not. He was extremely out of line and I told him to never call my phone again. I ended up going to another dealership and trading it in on a different brand. It goes without saying that Honda will not get my business again. I sent them emails explaining that driving down the road and having my car beep and or brake when a car was passing me in an opposite lane, and beeping constantly as if there were a short in a wire every time it rained was not normal. They said that they would not fix it and I needed to stop emailing them. I probably could have pursued a lemon law case but everyone has to pick their battles in life and I decided to be rid of a car with that many problems and being upside down was a bitter pill that seemed less painful than dealing with a bunch of lawyers, which is of course what companies like this hope for.

I owned a 2017 Honda Ridgeline pickup for about a year and decided I wanted to go back to a SUV and bought a 2018 Chevy Equinox Premier 2.0 Turbo (top of the line). Seemed fine for the first few months, then became more evident of it's cheap construction. Noisy interior. It also developed an annoying vibration at low or high speeds. Dealership service couldn't or wouldn't fix. Traded it for a 2019 Honda Passport Touring AWD. Very happy with it. Solid construction, very quiet and comfortable interior, controls and instruments very intuitive, good navigation system, excellent driver safety features. I'm glad I'm back in a Honda and I'm sure I'll be keeping this one for a while. One thing Honda could do in future Passports... add a "bird's eye view/overhead view" camera. That's the one thing I miss about the Chevy Equinox. It's such a useful feature for parking. Other than that I have absolutely no complaints about my Passport.

Passport to Fun & Great Value

2019 Honda Passport EX-L 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 9A)

Purchased my 2019 Passport on December 31 at closeout pricing. I went with Edmunds recommended trim level EX-L. About the only item I wish it had was the heated steering wheel, but I didn't want to pay the extra 4-6K to go up to the Touring or Elite trim. The EX-L has everything else I wanted or needed including Honda Sensing, leather seating, power rear lift gate, large touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay. I also went with AWD for possible future light-duty off-roading and the ability to tow 5K weight as opposed to 3.5K towing on the 2WD models. I can see why Edmunds rates this their top choice for midsize SUV. This car is very quiet, powerful, comfortable, and functional. I love the huge cargo area and hidden storage under the back deck. Visibility is great and the controls are easy to find and use. Some reviewers had negative comments on the push-button shifter. Yes, it's different than a single shift lever, but I find it easy to use. The shift buttons are clearly marked, and there's little chance of accidentally ending up in the wrong gear which can happen more easily with a shift lever. Re. the ride - some reviewers didn't like it. I'm not sure what they are expecting or used to, but there is nothing wrong with the ride on the Passport. Sure you're gonna feel it going over large bumps and potholes, but the alternative is an older tuna-boat domestic vehicle with no feel for the road whatsoever. The Passport has a good solid feel and the ride is as smooth as you'd ever expect in a mid-size SUV. The engine has a "normal" mode and an "eco" mode, and the ride has a "drive" mode and a "sport" mode. You can mix and match to get 4 different feels to the power and ride. For example its powerful and firmer in "normal/sport", and more staid and conservative in "eco/normal". I've pretty much stuck with "eco/normal" for economy, but it's nice to know you can go sporty and powerful if you want. This is a great choice for a mid-size SUV. Happy shopping!
