An Insight to the Insight

The eco-drive feature has really helped me break some of my bad driving habits, e.g., fast starts and hard breaking. The instrument displays and driving feedback are very readable. The reduction in power in the eco- drive did not significantly reduce performance for me.

I took a look at a 2007 Prius, but it didn't feel like a traditional car like this one. The styling, handling, and overall driving experience is great on the Insight. I did have to get used to the fraction of a second hesitation when you start from a full stop. And there is a very small shudder as the engine turns off when you stop. But these have only been minor annoyances that I don't even notice anymore. I am going to the gas station a lot less these days, and the price is well within the range of your average new compact car.

I considered buying a Prius given the deals currently available. But, after driving an Insight I bought it the same day. Not to say that the Prius isn't a good bargain at the moment, I just found the Insight to be a better overall car. Yes... a little smaller, mileage not quite as good. On the other hand, more comfortable driving position and much more fun to drive. Took it on a 700 mile trip this past weekend. Quite comfortable for myself, my wife and one 8 year old. Put it in sports mode for the Long Island Expressway and you're good to go!

Terrific car! Get 42mpg in our town that has stoplights on every corner! Engine shutdown feature was designed for this type of fuel mileage-robbing situations. On a recent 675 mile trip at 70 mph, we got 46 mpg. Yeah, the Prius does better, but for about $ 4000 more comparably equipped. My wife loves this car! Our dealership gave us an excellent deal, even discounting off sticker in May, one month after model introduction and giving us book value on our trade-in. We are very pleased with our first Honda!

Insight Is Better Than The Naysayers Say

Researched 2010 Insight heavily. Test drove several times here in Colorado. Test drove Civic. Replacing my 97 Civic HX wasn't easy but the Insight exceeds my expectations. Styling is superb and high end. Comfort is excellent for average height like myself. MPG already coming in high 40s, low 50s. Drove in snow second day of ownership today and handled great. Cons by many people are not typical of a superbly designed hybrid, so don't expect big power. Plastic? Nothing wrong with the interior plastic, it is light and saves on weight. I do agree mats should come standard, but overall the Insight EX is a beautiful vehicle, my 3rd Honda. I will keep for many years!

The 2010 Insight is a practical compact car that also happens to be a fun and engaging hybrid to drive. My first week with the Insight has been pleasant and rewarding with regard to the overall driving experience. Most of all - it meets my needs and fits within my budget. Exterior fit and finish is on par with its Honda kin - crisp lines and flowing forms that line up impeccably. Inside one will find a great deal of plastic, although it is mostly agreeable and retains the same level of refinement found outside. While I have yet to drive it without Eco-Assist enabled, my real world fuel economy is coming in at just over 50mpg with helpful coaching from the Multi-Information display.

I had tried to make deals on infiniti g37, infiniti ex-35 VW CC, Audi A-4, but dealers were not willing to negotiate realistically. So, I gave up my 2005 g35 at lease end last January and shared a car with my wife. Test drove the insight in April and it felt good and I did not have to spend upwards of $33,000. The insight is excellent in local driving and I am averaging about 42 mpg after one month of ownership. It is peppy enough for local driving, but make no mistake, this car does not have enough pick up between 45-70 mph if you are on the highway frequently. The seats are very firm and the controls and driving positions are good. Auto shut off can be a problem when it is very hot outside.

I'm talking about most of those car experts who rated this car poorly based on ride and power. I've used this car both around town (NYC) and on the highway. Considering its motor and transmission, it never left me waiting for the power to kick in. The assist needle will jump anytime you call for extra power. The ride is quiet and I'm able to hold conversations at 70mph without yelling, unlike my Mazda3. The suspension does a great job of absorbing bumps and potholes. It takes turns with minimal body lean. Don't attempt anything sporty in this car, though. Very little engine noise when you're up to speed, though you can hear it in the cabin during acceleration.

I drove a 2010 Prius before I purchased this car. The Prius is bigger and does not handle as well. Also, noise seemed to be more intrusive. I have consistently achieved mileage above 40 without trying. The car structure is tight and strong giving a very secure feeling as you drive. To sum it up, the various components of this car work well together leading you to the realization that a great deal of thought and engineering went into the design of this car.

Bought my Insight today for my college daughters and we took it straight from dealer to Santa Barbara for a 120 miles spin. We all loved it. All professional reviews are too harsh on Insight comparing with Prius. Insight has 10 times better driving position; better road feel; all the gadgets youngsters want (13 buttons on steering wheel plus pair of shifter paddles). Coupled with good price, this is a better choice. About accusing Insight copying Prius style, I remember this. Before Prius, there was this big ugly Pontiac. Before that, there was little cute Honda CRX. This style is for small cars. Insight has low and narrow profile to make it much nicer looking. And lots of fun.

Superb transportation

To me, this car exceeds advertised expectations which is unique in today's world. 95% of my driving is in the city and I easily get in excess of 45 mpg. I am surprised after reading some of the more recent reviews, that no one seems to mention the paddle shifters. This is a real innovation in my opinion. Not only does Honda allow you to drive in the most economic mode possible, but when you need some extra acceleration (such as an on-ramp to an interstate), you can REALLY make this car go. It feels just like driving a stick shift without the need for a clutch. Naturally, this will not get you the best mileage, but for those situations when you need some added boost, it is there.

An excellent economy car overall. Many of the observations made by others are true: The motor is buzzy at high RPM. ECON mode turns it into a total slug. Forget using this mode if you live in a hilly area. I do, and I leave it turned off and shift into Sport mode almost exclusively. Even so, I'm still averaging 39 MPG. A worthy sacrifice for improved pep. Handling is good for a car with tires that skinny. The styling is pleasing and it draws positive attention from onlookers. There's a lot of hard plastic in the interior. Some slightly softer surfaces might have been nice. Predictable Honda road noise, but hey, it's a $19k car, not a Lexus. Overall, I'm very pleased.

Currently averaging 45.3 miles per gallon, and on various trips averaged 55 to 60 mpg (95% of my driving has been on econ mode). The car was carefully put together and made affordable for a 25 year old like me. Missing some luxury and quality, but happy with the simplicity that the car brings. I am 6'2" and have plenty of head room, and distance between me and the steering wheel. Could get a little tight in the back for someone my size, but it is manageable. The technological features are useful. If you are patient and smart on the road, then you will maximize the efficiency of this car, and also find time to play with the sporty features.

Changing my driving style

I am 5000 miles into ownership. My MPG started at 43 and has improved with each fillup. My last tank was 51 MPG. I run tire pressure 2 pounds below the max pressure and trade a hard ride for MPG. The instruments are always in your face about your driving style and gives feeedback on your every move. I drive 65 miles a day in rolling hills and with mixed hwy/local roads. I run the AC only at cruising speed and let the cruse control take over when possible. I rate this car high for performance because I view fuel economy as its primary performance attribute. I never have a problem with entering and merging onto the highway, and typically run speed limit +5 to 10 w/AC on 90% of the time.

After about 6 months of driving the Insight on my 40 mile daily commute I'm very pleased with car's style and performance. After 8k miles I've gotten 53 (indicated) and 50 (measured) MPG as my lifetime to date fuel economy. I keep my tire pressure at 40 psi and drive fairly conservatively and the car has really rewarded me with impressive fuel economy. I'm currently using about half the gas I was using with my previous ride which was a '01 Focus ZX3. Aside from fuel economy I think the car is the most attractive high mileage car on the market. It has a sleek, futuristic look and comes with great looking wheels for an entry level hybrid. BTW, I'm 5'-10" and I fit in the back seat just fine.

When I went to buy a new car, I was looking for fuel efficient and economical. I tried the Prius, but didn't love the way it handled and couldn't handle how expensive it was, even used, especially if you want some additional features. I was very pleased when I drove the new Honda Insight. The handling is great. It is comfortable. Extra features (I got the EX) don't add that much to the price. So far I look forward to driving my car every day. And I am getting over 50MPG (I drive entirely in city), versus the 41 average that is advertised. I no longer rush to get where I am going- instead I enjoy playing the game of how to get better MPGs.

Economical. That's what the car is. It give great mileage and driving is smooth and easy. Though like the other reviews, power and acceleration needs improvement. Going up on an incline is pretty hard. It takes a while for the car to speed up. Though, I may say this "deficiency" had made me a "more lawful" driver. I got the EX with Navi and I would have to say that adding extra to get the top of the line of this model is worth it rather than spending the same amount on other standard hybrid models. I would also like to add that I had my seat covers changed to leather for no additional cost. I know this feature is not offered but my dealership did so as requested. ;)

The Hallelujah Hybrid

The Honda Insight makes you want to shout "hallelujah!" Finally, a hybrid with vigor! No one will confuse this car with the sporty Civic Si, but neither will you feel left in the dust at every stoplight in normal traffic. The Insight is responsive, fun to drive, and easy on the eyes. The interior is competitive in the price range. Seats could be upgraded some, though, with more adjustment for both driver and front passenger. Expect to beat the EPA ratings...my first 500 miles (about 65% highway and 35% city) yielded a nice 46.5 mpg, even with a strong quartering wind for the last 125 miles that knocked about a mile per gallon off the trip's average.

I chose the insight since I couldnt see myself in a prius. I drove an 2007 BMW M5 that gave me mechanical problems and bad gas. I was looking for greatest gas mileage plus prestige that only came with a hybrid like prius- Insight was just the car. In CA-it was great since it's warm. No need for heating. Drove to seattle for $80 in gas. Now, I am averaging 34-36MPG- not happy with these #'s. I have to remind myself I bought it for the distinction, otherwise I should have spend less on a civic.

I was driving Chevy Suburban daily for the last several years. With a recent job change, I was spending close to $500 in gas every month. That had to stop. After reading reviews on Prius and Insight, it was pretty clear that I needed Insight. Bought EX model in the middle of June 2010, and I have no regret at all and love driving it. My weekly gas bill is mere $20. Even with my monthly lease payment, I am spending less money every month. The quality is great, and the console is well thought out.

I've driven this car for 2k miles and love it. I have a family of 4 and took this car on our trip to New Orleans and it handled fine. I have a 4 and a 5 yr old and we all fit comfortably in the car with luggage for a weekend trip. Consistently get 41 mpg and I drive the hell out of it. Road noise was comparable to the 2001 Maxima I traded in. I can hear engine noise when I hit an incline on the interstate going 80 mph. The car's exterior is styled better than the Prius. Overall, the car is fun to drive. It reminds me of my Acura Integra I had in college. Also reminds me of the Honda CRX.

The Insight looks great (nicer than the Prius in my opinion), generally drives well, and gets excellent fuel mileage at a cheap price. I've only been driving it for 300 miles (roughly 40%/60% city/highway) and it has already topped 42 mpg and is still climbing. It's an extremely quiet car unless you floor it (and even then...); I'm not sure why noise is such a common complaint. Overall, I am very satisfied. However, there are a number of annoyances: Auto-stop. Stop and go for any period of time will make you wish you could turn it off. You can't. Accelerating from 0 to 10 is *very* jerky. Above 10 mph it's fine. Again, awful in stop and go traffic. The hatch creates a rear blind spot.

All I can say is I love this car. The ride is like a much bigger, more expensive car. I keep reading about the lack of power, but I can't say that I would buy a hybrid if I was looking for power. The MPG's for me are much more than it was rated. Even if I go 75 on the interstate, I still never ever got under 47 MPG. I average 50 MPG. Love the auto A/C and the auto volume control. The only thing I am not sure about are the shifter pedals on the steering wheel. I know what they do, but I have yet to use them... All in all I LOVE my Insight.

I really like my Insight - I've been averaging about 47 MPG combined, which is better than I was expecting. Ride and handling are what I'd expect for this type and class of car. If you inflate the tires to 38 or 40 psi, ride, MPGs, and handling improve greatly. USB audio capability is great, plenty of room for luggage, groceries, stroller, etc. I've owned two Infiniti G35s over the years (one sedan and one coupe), and this car is far from them in performance and handling - but, for a hybrid, this car is great!

The MPG is better than EPAed in most of my driving conditions. The feedback the the car provides really helps to max the mpg. Fast starts like I used to do in the Del Sol does eat into the mpg. But fast starts in any car do the same. I achieve over 50 twice and 48 mpg over 170 mi hwy trip with cruse set to 67. Handling is wonderful!

The 2010 Insight is a decent compromise for the money. It is a good second or commuter-only car, provided your other car can carry all of the people and junk in your life. Despite having 4 doors, it is really a 2 seater car with room for 5 year old children occasionally. Most of the complaints (modest acceleration, engine noise, small back seat, blind spots, road noise, A/C shuts off at stoplights, short seat cushions, etc.) are true, but not unexpected for a small, inexpensive commuter hybrid. If you want a solid little commuter with its associated compromises, it is a solid choice.

I traded in a 1994 Toyota 4 runner with 227,000 mile on it in the cash for clunkers deal. I was getting about 13-15 MPG on the 4 runner and my first tank on the Insight got 41. That was driving around town and now I get about 45-47. I think the car looks good and I love the Clear blue sky metallic paint. It lacks off the line power but I got that out of my system with my Porsche 911. The car has plenty of power to get on the freeway and smoothly gets up to 65-70 MPH. The handling is nice and sportier than I thought it would be. It is comfortable and very quiet.

My daily commute into Houston is 90 miles. It is great to be able to make that trip using only two gallons of gas! I now have driven almost 10,000 miles, and have averaged 45 mpg so far. I have only taken two trips out of town, and its mileage then was slightly better, around 47 mpg. It is quite comfortable and handles very well, much better than the Prius I was about to buy. My wife urged me to at least test drive an Insight, and that's all it took to change my mind. She likes the car too, but I have the long commute and drive it most of the time. What I find odd is that when I get into heavy freeway traffic, going 50-65 mph, the mpg's actually go up. I'm very impressed overall.

I bought Insight for short-distance commute to be green and gas economical. Satisfied with gas mileage, style, and general performance. I mistakenly used Ecomode in hot summer, and it turned off the air conditioner. I changed the mode back to normal, and it worked well. Extremely economical and driver- friendly. I used to drive a Ford Explore and really enjoyed it. But Insight is worth sacrificing the road- ego. Insight has higher ground clearance than Toyota Prius. Prius always hits the front bumper when getting on and off the driveway. For the same amenities, I paid $5,000 less than a Prius. Also, Toyota dealers were hard to deal with when Toyota was hot. They played tricks and price games.

Consistent 40 mpg in the city. Leaving the econ button on helps dramatically with mileage. A/C is cold cold cold. When you put the back seats down there is a lot of room. Only real issue is that it's not very torquey, imagine that, and it's somewhat sensitive to road contour. Handles well otherwise though. Brakes are great.

Bought this car an hour after test driving Honda Civic. Found Insight almost as peppy but with a slightly softer ride. Car is so bright inside, you feel like you have a sunroof. No complaints about acceleration: you just have kick down hard on the gas pedal as the manual recommends. Driving position and road feedback are exceptional. My two main complaints are that the sound system in LX model is a lot tinnier than in my 2008 Hyundai Sonata and the headlights aren't bright enough.

Best Car I Ever Bought!

I've owned this car for over a year, now. Get's better MPG than I expected. Have never gotten below 40MPG. Car looks good when I first bought it, other cars would irritate me by getting in front of me and slowing down, then switching lanes until I realized they were checking out my car. I have no complaints thus far. I only wonder how long the battery will last. I really love this car!

Read a ton of stuff before I ran out and got one. Paid invoice and am getting $3,000 back from work. I got a $22,000 car for $17,000. I love it. I've seen many comparisons to the Prius. I skipped the Prius because it was so expensive. People who complain it's not quick miss the point. I am amazed at the technology it comes with. Traction control? Climate control? LED lights? Paddle shifters? I am getting close to 50 mpg. Typical (excellent) fit / finish for a Honda.

We liked our insight so much that my wife bought one for herself. We both get more than the EPA mileage estimate. The car is fun and easy to drive. We can fit four adults easily and there has been no complaint of lack of headroom in the rear. We look forward to the hybrid fit as we would like to have a small SUV that gets great gas mileage.

Great car, so far

I've only had it a few days, so I'm sure I'll come back to this review. I'm averaging about 47MPG with city driving in Florida with the AC blasting. In "eco" mode, the car is slow. That is how it is supposed to be. However, in "sport" mode, it has enough pickup to get moving quite well. The auto shutoff takes a little getting used to but can be turned off by not using "eco" mode. The ride is smooth and quiet and the car is well-made like most Hondas. The USB interface for iPods is great as well as the fuel economy screens and the plethora of information it supplies to you to improve your driving. I strongly suggest the EX for Cruise Control.

I came, I saw, and I clunked. This was a CFC transaction. I couldn't be more pleased with the ride and the features. I considered a Prius, but local dealers had no inventory. My dealer threw in floormats and wheel locks. I'm a big guy and pleased with the head and leg room. The displays with performance information are excellent. I am averaging 46.6 MPG, but I expect to improve as I climb the learning curve.

Insight after 5000 miles

The car does nothing to clue you in that you are driving a hybrid except shut down when you stop and return excellent mpg. I have gotten from 40 to 62 mpg on trips and of course the cold start, short trips get the lowest and the under 55 mph longer trips get the best. If you go 70 mph on the highway you will get better mpg with the econ mode off. As for the paddle shifters I have not made use of them except on a trip through the Great Smoky mountains. I would downshift to keep the car from running away on the long downward grades, otherwise I would have worn the brakes out because the regenerative braking was not working because the battery was charged to the max due to the downward grade.

Simply outstanding Green Machine. Fuel economy (45 mph average) is 47 with heat/AC on, and over 50 with heat/AC off! Good acceleration and excellent response. Couldn't be happier. Why pay more for a Prius and get less?

Good Car for City Commuting

Well I got inspired and traded in my 2008 CRV for an Insight. I have an average commute of 40 mile per day total with about 4 miles of city driving. I live in San Antonio and my last 5 miles of my commute is stop and go traffic. Anybody who drives 281 North in the evening will know stop and go should really be stop and stop traffic. I have 1400 miles on the car and am averaging all around 45.2 MPG. I will admit I do miss the CRV, but I am a city driver only and with the exception of going back and forth to work I do not do that much additional driving... bottom line. I like the car. Even though gas is down right now we all know when this economy get back on track will be looking ^$ gas.

Perfect car for commuter and/or run-about-towners. Handling makes up for lack of acceleration and 45+mpg makes up for everything else. Very up-market exterior styling blows away Prius plus one can stop the car when one wants!

Insights to the Insight

I've had my Insight EX for ten months and still find it fun to drive, easy on gas, generally well-designed and (annoyingly) still regularly mistaken by friends, colleagues and the general public for a Prius. I've put 5500 miles on it and averaged just under 44 mpg. (I live on the hilly end of town, make multiple short trips every week, and live in a cold climate (it never got above freezing all February) so have many factors lowering realized mpg. I have gotten as high as 48.5 mpg for 300+ mile trips on the interstate. I test drove the 2010 Prius as well as the Civic hybrid. Both are fine cars, but the Insight was best for me.

Had Civic Hybrid and Prius

My previous car was a 2007 Civic Hybrid and so the Insight was an easy transition. Our second car is a 2008 Prius which is our preferred people hauler. The Insight is much more responsive in acceleration and handling. The front seats are very supportive and the car has a firm, European feel in the steering and suspension. The engine is quiet except under hard acceleration where it gets a bit buzzy. The build quality is superb inside and out --it just feels solid. I mainly drive stop-and-go Los Angeles streets and average 44+ mpg. The Insight is hands-down more fun-to-drive than our Prius but the Toyota is capable of higher fuel efficiency. The Insight is Honda's best hybrid effort so far.
