DX Hatchback
I purchase this car as a daily driver. It drives great and for such a small car, the ride is pretty good. I like to drive pretty hard and so far the car has taken everything I've thrown at it with aplomb. It also gets great gas mileage, though at the expense of some performance. Acceleration is only average (especially on hills) and I find myself having to hold onto a gear during acceleration because the gears are so widely spaced, when I shift the rpms drop way out of the powerband. Overall the car drives great, and if Honda's reputation serves me right, it should for quite some time.
Hatchbacks Rule
My Civic provides basic transportation with style. I love the styling both inside and out. The automatic transmission is very smooth in its shifting. The engine provides plenty of power even when the air conditioning is running. There have been a couple minor problems though. There is a rattle when the car is idling because the bolts that hold the heat shield on part of the exhausts system have rusted badly, but this could be easily remedied. Also, the hatchback does not stay up on its own because the pistons have worn out. Overall, I would recommend a Honda Civic hatchback to anyone in the market for a small fuel-efficient car.
215,000 miles-more! just a few dings...
Went over 214,000 miles...no sign of letting up! Was offered 5k last week, but until I find something as good- why part ways? Car gets dinged up more easily than others... can't get out of its own way up hills but GREAT car!!! buy 2 of them!
GREAT CAR, FUN TO DRIVE!
This is the best deal we have ever had for a car! It has maintained its value very well, and been completely reliable. And it's a lot of fun to drive!
Civic
I bought the Civic with 144,000 miles. I now have 146,000 miles. I traded my 1999 Civic LX 4-door for this car, and it was a great decision. My '98 EX is a stick as opposed to my '99 LX auto. It has much better gas mileage and is a lot more fun to drive.
What happened Honda?
My fiancee owned the car for about two years before finally getting rid of it after the transmission went out with less than 50000 miles on it. If this had been just about any other import car the rapairs would have been covered under the powertrain warranty, but not on a Honda. The exhaust manifold had also cracked on the car about a year earlier. I have a friend with a 2000 Accord coupe that is aslo having transmission trouble. Where is that Honda quality I always hear about? I'll stick with Nissan. They build more exciting cars at a better value and I have never had aproblem with any of my Nissan vehicles.
Great Little Car, Cheap to Own
I bought my 98 EX last Sept. from my old roommate in college--he bought it new and at 79,300 miles, runs great. He maintained it very well and soon after I got it, the battery died (original), and the muffler rusted out. Other than that, no problems--AC is cold and heater is hot and everything works. I consistently get about 33 mpg highway and around 30-31 combined in my driving cycle. While it's not a sports car, it is cheap to maintain and easy to work on. The engine will outlast the rest of it.
Love this Car!!!
I absolutely love this little coupe! I bought it when I was unemployed for a year and needed something to drive that would be economical, inexpensive, and fuel effeciency. It has done all of things and more. It's comfortable, handles well, and is fun to drive. I bought my 1998 Civic with 95k miles, it now has 115k after 10months of absolutely flawless ownership. Just maintence costs and gas. I get 34mpg in mixed driving and 38mpg highway. cheap alternative no more, I'm a civic believer.
Good Basic Car
I bought this car for a 124 mile commute per day and it has served well. I got a very base model, but I'm still impressed. Off the line it's not great, but that's the price you pay for the gas mileage. Good stock stereo.
Fun, Reliable, and Efficient
Wonderful car! I got my civic as a hand-me-down. It was my first car and will be my only car for some time. Fuel economy is superb for such a sporty compact. The hatchback is a great model due to its transportation qualities. The D17Y engine isn't exactly the best in it's class, but Honda did put enough work into making it rev extremely high. Put your foot to the floor on a long stretch of road and the automatic transmission down shifts and launches you forward. The air conditioning isn't the best, however, if it is left on long enough at high power it WILL cool the entire car down. My only complaint is that if you drive the car at the top end, fuel economy suffers quite a bit.
Best Buy Ever
I just got this car and it's a blast the engine is strong and the interior design is flawless. 2dr feels like 4dr sedan plenty of room for the family.
Still Chugging along! (Has a new Home)
Still Sold and Gone I sold my Honda Civic HX in April 2023 after 25 years. 159k+ miles. Pretty sure I got my money worth. I also sold my 2010 Subaru Forester to my GF. I purchased 2022 Honda CRV. Pretty sure i paid the highest used price before they started coming back down. I did really like my Civic. My guess it was sold for parts. 158k miles, been working from home for the last year (Pandemic) still 37 mpg. I own 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 & 2010 Subaru Forester. Subaru gets most of the miles these days. Honda is fun to drive but the operator has little more effort getting in and out these day of the cockpit. 4-15-2021 154469 miles, still gets a round 37 mpg. Tune up planned for the end of the month. Illinois road salt and use has clamed two mufflers. Radiator was replaced 3 years ago. New Brake lines this last spring. Bought it brand new and feel I have gotten my moneys worth.

still magic
In '98 I bought my 5 speed, honda hatch with 4km. Today it's got 195,000km and is still a gas sipping beauty. Love driving a stick shift.
1998 Honda 2 Dr civic hatchback is getting rare.
The ratings and values were fair. It’s hard to find a good to excellent civic with low mileage. They’re very useful vehicles and get great mileage and can haul a lot of baggage. The major drawback is that they are easy to steal and should have a secondary security system to prevent the vehicle from being started and stolen.Excellent for use as a economical commuter vehicle with multiple other uses.

Won't Buy Honda next time
First of all, I purchased the vehicle when its mileage was @ 21,000. Within the first year (and at the same "fix it" visit), I had to REPLACE the Exhaust Manifold (had a crack in it) and had the A/Trans. worked on. In 2002, I experienced probs w/the Electrical System. I've purchased at least 4 car batteries since I bought the financial burden! Once again, my car hesitates/shutters, fails to start sometimes, AND appears to have a serious power drain somewhere. Last month I had the battery's charge checked (b/c my car had stalled at a stop sign!) and was told the battery was fine but that my Alternator needed to be looked at (AGAIN!). Also, I get TERRIBLE gas mileage - like 16 mpg.
Honda Civic CX
This is a very good little car, but it is not the best value in the Honda line. The CX model does not have power steering and is difficult to park.
My Honda From Hell
Almost immediately after purchasing my car, I found that the car was not shifting correctly. The crack staff at Plaza Auto Mall which changes weekly decided that I needed a transmission. That was replaced and I am still not happy with the performance of the auto. I also have a problem with the gas pedal. It is very difficult to push down and there is not a smooth follow through. There are other problems that I have with the car but it would take too long to write about.
