Fun and Frugal

From the beginning, this car was just right -- sporty for a family car, yet comfortable and easy on gas. It always impressed me as nimble on the coast and in the mountains, and twice kept me out of accidents by handling "at the speed of thought" -- once in traffic, once at night, avoiding a deer. Now my son's car, it just keeps on being reliable.

My family bought a Geo Prizm in March '93, special ordered and drove it until 2005. It was gonna be my car once I got my license, but the bottom was too rusted out. We got 178,615 miles and the car was still mechanically sound, except for the rotors. It was completely reliable, unless there was some problem with it, like starter or alternator. All it ever needed was maintenance, except when the clutches burned after my dad had it in 2 instead of D when it was a year old. Ours was Polynesian Green and it was a beauty as a young car, before the rust. It was soooo good we got a 2nd Prizm in '02 and 3 years later my dad got a 2nd '02, after our Geo left the road. More about them in the '02 Chevy Prizm reviews.

I bought this car when I was in graduate school and for 140,000 miles and 10 years, it's been consistently reliable. Every year I waited for problems to give me a good excuse to buy a new car, but it keeps on going! Repairs have been extremely minimal, and only regular maintenance required.

My parents have spent approx. $800 on repairs for this car. Acceleration, horsepower is poor. Something is draining the battery on the car. This car has stalled in my school parking and a major road during rush hour. DO NOT BUY A GEO PRISM, BUY THE COROLLA, IT IS CHEAPER IN THE END.

187,000 and still going strong!!

The car still looks great! Everyone says how small it is but my husband, son, an I fit with all the stuff we bring to grandmas' houses (2.5 or 5 hours) no problem. I would say the 187,000 miles are half highway and half city. I replace the tires and brakes every few years. The manifold has cracked a few times, the radio went out several years ago, and the heater just blows warm air now, but otherwise no major repairs or replacements. If they still made them, I would buy another in a heartbeat!
