Another Ford, Another Faulty Transmission

Allen, 01/07/2020
2017 Ford Focus SEL 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 6AM)

This will be my 3rd Ford in under 10 years that I have had the clutch replaced 2-3 times before 35k miles. From my previous Fiestas and now the Focus, transmission started presenting hesitation or slipping of the clutch, particularly in gears 1-3. First two cars Ford decided to recall and later warranty the transmission up to 100k. I'm out of luck with the 2017 Focus as Ford has yet to recall for the same issues all the previous years have had. Aside from never having issues with bluetooth connectivity and the Sony sound system, I would never purchase a Ford product ever again and if I hadn't gotten stuck with some negative equity in the previous vehicles due to Ford putting out a product that they knew was defective, I wouldn't have purchased two more as means of trying to get out from under a lemon.

I had a focus hatchback 2014 and had horrible clutch problems which took Ford over a year to fix. They ended up putting a new clutch in. I felt the car was a lemon and was scared to commute with it so I traded it with 64k miles on it for a 2017 Focus SE. I didn't want another Focus after the issues I had with the 2014. Well at 31k a little over a year of having the car, I had to take it in because the car would shake when shifting or slowing down plus it was dripping oil. (puddle on my garage floor). The dealer had it about a week and told me they had to replace the clutch. (Same as the 2014) So I let them know how upset I was because this is why I didn't want to buy another focus. I was assured when I purchased the "17 I would not have the problems the '14 had. WRONG! This week at 32k my car is going back into the Ford dealer to be repaired because it is now shifting before it should and is very noisy and sluggish when it does so. After having a tech in the car to see what I was talking about they said they may have to replace part of the exhaust. The car only has 32K on it. I am not happy at all. The only positive is the gas mileage. I get about 36 in the summer commuting. Which is way better then the Fusion I has in 2011 but so many more headaches. The car handles the snow amazing for a front wheel drive but only after installing snow tires. This may be my last Ford ever. Not happy with them at all. Update 2021 I still have my 2017 Focus and now that the bugs are worked out I like it. The gas mileage is amazing. I get 35 in the coldest of Wisconsin temps -30 and some. In the summer it gets almost and can get 40. Snow tires make the car handle blizzard conditions fantastic with traction control turned off. I hate traction control in snow. It has pulled threw snow I thought for sure I would be stuck in. Great car now that things are fixed. I have 100,000 plus on it. UpDate: I currently have almost 170K miles. I love this car. It still gets about 35 mpg with freeway in cold weather. -0 it gets about 32-34 mgp. It is March 2023 and I am getting 37-almost 40 on trips. I commute about 40 miles one way daily to work. I wish Ford would still make this car for commuting. I cannot find anything I want to replace it with as I look now that I am fast approaching 200K.

Clutch gone bad

Bbrown, 04/09/2019
2017 Ford Focus S 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)

Bought my 2017 Ford Focus car at Enterprise Car Sales in Milwaukee, and I test drove it was fine, 6 days later I felt the shaking and called ECS back and they told me to bring it in, they told me to take to their mechanic OB, and I did they said it was some switch, and it needed to go to the Ford Dealership, took it to them they said it was the clutch, so they are going to replace it under my warranty. So if you are considering buying a used Ford Focus do your due diligence, and Research, make sure you get a good warranty.

2017 Ford Focus SEL 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6AM)

Great little car for the money. I currently have 24000 miles on my ruby red SEL hatchback and I am very happy so far . Driving to my daughters in Virginia from New Jersey I have gotten between 43 and 47 miles per gallon . The drive is mostly highway speeds at 45 - 60 MPH, and I watch traffic lights and traffic up ahead and let off the gas a good distance before coming to the stopped traffic. I'm sure i'm saving my brake pads too. The computer is usually one and a half to 2 miles per gallon too much I use the odometer. I previously had a suburban and this car was a big change. I was surprised how good the ride and comfort were on the highway , I don't drive the car fast, I am very conservative with it . I have also driven stick shifts for years and the shifting of this transmission does not bother me at all. I give it time to shift and have no problems. For me it's a great little car ! One thing I would add is that when I come to a stop, I watch the rpm's, and wait for it to be in neutral before taking off. In traffic I don't creep forward. I wait and give the car in front of me a little distance before I move up thereby not slipping clutches. I believe this helps. I have read about a lot of people who have had many problems , perhaps I just got a good trans or perhaps problems are in my future. I hope not. ( over thirty thousand and still no problems. Still a good little car if you don't beat it up!) I have now experienced a little shuddering of the transmission.. I then took the car out on the highway and ran it from a full stop ( from the shoulder of the road of course) to 70=75 mph. I did this four times, and the shuddering stopped. This I believe cleans the glaze that can form on the clutches. It is now 27 months old with 37000 miles and the car still performs well. I am satisfied with it. It is a small car well built for the money, but it is not to be driven like a high powered sports car. I still get over 41 MPG on long trips. Again I want to stress I am easy with the vehicle. I read an article of a delivery man who attained well over 350000 miles before he needed to have his transmission rebuilt. I will be satisfied if I can top 150000 mark. We shall see! *** 7/30/2020 Now have almost 41,000 miles and still no problems at all. Gas mileage is still over 41 on long trips, but like I said before I am easy with the car. My focus is still amazingly quiet for such a small car. I haven't driven much this past year because of the virus, so I haven't made too many long trips. I give this car 5 stars. I guess I have a good one!***I now have over 51,000 miles and this little focus is just as good as the day I purchased it. No repairs, only oil changes a little sooner then the manual recommends. Recently on a trip down Routes 13 and 113 Del. Md. Va. speed limits 45-55 with cruise control, and I got (45 MPG) by the odometer reading. The computer can be 1-2 mpg off. Keeping my fingers crossed, and hoping to get 150,000 miles. Didn't do much driving this past year due to staying home and not visiting family as much. Now have 59,500 miles and still running well. Also using the cruise control at 71MPH on long runs, I can get 40 + MPG. Don't beat this little car up and it will last a long time! I now have 69,000 miles and it still gets over 40 MPG on long trips (using cruise control) and just made appt. for brakes! Only one small repair was a plastic purge valve (Emissions contol) replaced by Ford under warranty! Ford made a great little car if you don't drive it like it's a race car! If they still made it I would buy another! Thanks Ford!

Great little car.

Ford has come a long way with this little car. This is my second Focus, and I can honestly say I cant complain about it at all. I'm middle aged so I don't need all the extra power, bells, and whistles. The fuel economy is excellent. Most of my driving is highway, and I average about 40.5 mpg. , less for city driving. The ride is comfortable especially for trips less than three hours. The car handles very well, and is quite nimble when getting into parking spaces. The 1.0 liter is adequate for my needs, but it lacks the power of my previous Focus which had the 2.0 . (By the way, the 2.0 also got great mileage). I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who needs a low cost, reliable sedan.
