If you have kids, or are a do-it-yourselfer you will find this vehicle is meets your needs. Plenty of room, the back seats fold down to allow 12-foot lumber to be loaded. Groceries are no problem and I can even put four gas cans to fill up at the gas station. Ride is incredible, very smooth, quiet, and handling is exceptional. The turning radius is not great but is manageable. The Flex looks like a wagon that it is but is great at so many things I have it give it a five-star overall rating. If you plan to travel with kids make sure you get the DVD player for the back seat. The kids can watch movies or even play video games. Safety features are very good although I wish my model had the adaptive cruise control that is on my 2017 Ford Fusion. I can't say enough about this little wagon that can! Update 02/27/2019: I still own the vehicle but haven't driven it much since I also own a Ford Fusion Hybrid. The Flex is much easier to get in and out of and it is one of the best riding vehicles I have ever owned. When I purchase my next Flex (never certain when Ford will stop producing) I want the technology upgrade that my Ford Fusion has: the updated SYNC system, lane departure, adaptive cruise control, adaptive headlights, heated steering wheel and front-end collision warning. As I get older I find these technologies really help. Because of its versatility, good gas mileage, and exceptional driving and riding comfort (even the rear seats are cozy and comfortable), I still highly recommend this car. I do not use the third row seats and instead use that area for storage. Update 8/27/2019. I purchased a new 2019 Limited Flex and it has most of the safety features I had on my Fusion. The only safety feature it lacks is the front-end collision warning, which I really miss. This feature is especially handy when I am parking in a retailer's parking lot. It prevents me from getting too close to the vehicle in front of me but not so far away the back of my Flex is sticking out. 08/30/2020 Update: I moved to a smaller place with a smaller garage so I traded in my Flex. I miss the roominess, comfort, and ease of entrance and exit. I keep bumping my head on my new, smaller vehicle. I also miss the ability to carry supplies from the hardware and big box stores for my unending renovations to my home. I highly recommend the Flex, you will not regret your purchase.

2021 UPDATE: 150,000 miles and it’s still a good ride! We passed this onto our teenage daughter. BTW, her driving course labels the Ford Flex as one of their top 4 cars for new drivers. We have had a few repairs at this point, including a leak in the fuel intake valve and a steering and air conditioning issue. There was a recall issue related to the rear suspension toe link that we had to get repaired. These all hit within 6 months for a total of about $1500 in total, inclusive of standard maintenance. Still highly recommend this tank! 2018 UPDATE: 124,000 miles and still going strong! 2017 UPDATE: My husband now uses this car as his company car and we put a ton of miles on it in the last year. We travelled to Disney last week and discovered a dead battery one morning when trying to start up the car. We realized this was the original battery at well over 100k miles! Jumped it to get home and got a new battery, even though the mechanic said we could possibly clean it up from the corrosion and keep it going for awhile. Other than that, which is better than expected wear, we have had no issues with this car. If you want the space of a minivan without the stigma and are not into a gas guzzling SUV, this is the vehicle for you! We have three large dogs and two kids, so when we need to take the entire family, fuzzy butts and all, on a long trip, we don't have much of an option. The quote, "We are either a minivan family or a Flex family", was the seller for my husband who hates the idea of driving a minivan but also happens to be 6'7". He can sit in the second row and still have leg room. He was sold on that alone, but the retro look of the boxy wagon, while widely appealing to me, was not on his short list of replacements for the minivan. Now, don't get me wrong, you will lose space in this option over a minivan with sto and go seating, but it is the best option we have found that doesn't make my husband feel like a total domestic loser. I loved both, the minivan with it's sliding doors and massive interior, and the flex with the appealing exterior (IMHO). I liked the minivan better from the capacity, but for an everyday car, the Flex is a much better option. The ride is comfortable and getting 7 people in the car when the in-laws come to visit keeps us from having to spill into two cars to get anywhere. As for the missing interior space, well, the roof rack and tow hitch were a must after trying to take the kids and the dogs on a 10 hour drive. We were going to trade in our current Flex and purchase another one with those options, but opted to add on a hitch from U-Haul, which was much cheaper, although the hitch placement is too low and we routinely scrape bottom with a load on it over humps. I would opt for a dealer-installed version which cuts out part of the plastic bumper and sits higher on the frame.

Flex: Not Great to Look At But Su perior to Drive

This is not a sports car or even a high powered performance vehicle. What the Flex is, is a reliable, comfortable-riding, quiet, vehicle that has plenty of storage space while still allowing rear-seat passengers comfort and quietness. Rear-seat passengers can control their own temperature just like both front-seat passengers can do. I sold my 2014 Flex, got a two-year lease on a Ford Fusion, and purchased a 2019 Flex Limited, now my third Flex I've owned. The AWD works flawlessly and yet I still average 20 mpg overall. This is one of the most under-appreciated vehicles Ford produces. I love it and would recommend this vehicle if you are looking for a great family vehicle with a lot of nice features at a fair price. This is an update to a previous review. I still love the vehicle and especially love the storage space. I even used it to carry home 3/4 inch sheetrock and 8-foot lumber from Lowe's. Highly recommend this vehicle if you don't mind having a "boxy" looking car. One of the advanced technology that is impressive is the "heads up" display in the lower left quadrant of the windshield when the collision avoidance is activated. The only problem with that system is that it goes off if a car is turning in front of you and you pass on the left or if you are on the Thruway and cars in front of you take an exit and you pass on the left. I wish this system worked in a parking lot by signaling when you are getting close to the car in front of you. Still drives and rides wonderfully. Because my wife and I downsized and moved into a village we had to trade in the Flex for an Escape. The Escape is nowhere near the ride comfort of the Flex but it does fit into our smaller garage. This is an update and I still recommend the Ford Flex; in fact, I miss mine very much. 7/21/21 This is an update of my Escape. I would not purchase another Escape and plan to go to the Ford Edge which is still small enough to fit in my garage yet rides more comfortably and provides larger storage. The Escape is just too small and uncomfortable for me. 01/21/2023 I traded in my Escape, but because of limited supply I purchased a 2022 Ford Explorer. I love the size and the features the car comes with. There were some features it doesn't have and I wish it did. It rides comfortably but is a little noisy. Fit and finish are good, and the electronics are wonderful. I've owned it about six months and it is good so far.

This is one of the best cars we've ever owned. I love the drivers cockpit. Very comfortable and gives you a positive, commanding feel as you drive it. Has the basic PRNDL or the Sport Mode of shifting. Sport mode is a blast! This is a beautiful car that handles superbly. Very eye catching appearance. Great sound system with Sirius XM, CD and AM/FM. It has the voice control system. Very handy. Sync system for your mobile device. By a long shot....the most technically advanced vehicle I've ever owned.

The flex is very practical for a family of five with three of them little boys. It is a good alternative to a van. They had to replace the motherboard in the front computer panel the first 6 months I had it. The entire dash would black out in the middle of the interstate (scary!). We also had to have the back two windows replaced because the engineering of the back lift gate puts too much pressure on the windows resulting in pressure cracks. Now, the back up camera has stopped work and it the screen says "go to dealer for repair". Everything was covered under the warranty, which was a blessing because these issues would add up to pretty significant costs if out of pocket. The heater/air is wonderful. Ford's Sync system is one of the best out there IMO. The acceleration is terrible. You have to really watch before you pull out into traffic or onto the interstate on ramp as there is not initial power to get you going quickly. We believe that the Flex should have a larger engine to accommodate the size and weight of the vehicle. The captain chairs in the back with easy access to the third row was very convenient with pretty good storage space using all three rows.
