Used 2005 Ford Escape XLS AWD 4dr SUV (2.3L 4cyl 4A) Consumer Reviews
One Month Review
I've had my Escape for just over one month (~3,000 miles). I have been very pleased with its handliing (AWD and we have had 4-5 snow falls since I've purchased). I went with the 4 cylinder because I do not tow stuff and will use this vehicle for a daily 50 mile (round-trip) commute. Fuel economy started at about 18 miles/gallon and after the break in period (couple of tank fulls) I am averaging 20 - 21 miles/gallon. I have an '95 ranger with the 4-cylinder and 250,000 miles, so I expect similar longevity with the updated 4-cylinder. The updated 4-cylinder has a lot of passing power, though with substantial noise when floored. Came with the Blast package electric lock package.
Great alternative to a Jeep
I purchased the Escape becuase of it's AWD and new 2.3L-auto combo- and I am very happy with the performance of the Escape on wet roads- no wheel slipping or skidding - hope winter driving is just as much fun. I work for Chrysler and decided to save the $8,000 difference for a Jeep- I don't need a "trail rated" 15 mpg SUV. Can't be beat for $18,000 and change after the $2000 rebate (lowered to $1500 in November)

so far so good
Not that much of a downgrade (roomwise) from my Explorer Sport. Handles good, blast package worth the money for the sound system. Not tons of power but knew that was an issue before buying (better on gas). Average 20-21 mpg with 24 being the best with just over 3000 miles on vehicle.
Pretty Good Little SUV
This vehicle handles very well in the snow and in the everyday around town driving. However it is VERY VERY VERY sluggish on the highway or going up hills. Also the cruise control is not very good (you will either go 5 mph under or 5 mph over where you have the cruise control set). If you are looking for a vehicle to commute in, TRY THE 6 cylinder or another vehicle all together! If you are looking for a cheap, reliable SUV to get around town in, this is the one for you.
not for off road
i took my Escape to the ranch and the road was, as usual, muddy and thick. It performed great, but it seemed to slow down further when I took it out to test it with water... it almost failed me. It slowed down dramatically and it just about let me down. It still works; I rely on it on road with little bit of a puddle ... it still scares me to take against nature's worst.
