Awesome Tahoe

Purchased this 2002 LS (with most of the LT features) in April 2015 with 104K on the clock. It's now December 2015 and we are approaching 123K. We have driven it on at least a half dozen trips between Dallas and Chicago, Asheville-NC and Colorado Springs. With the exception of having to replace the flex fuel module, the truck has been amazing. Extremely comfortable, and with handling reflexes that would otherwise be expected of a much smaller SUV. Absolutely love the 325 CID V8 - smooth and pulls strong all the way to 6000 rpm. It uses a quart of oil about every 6,000 miles - amazing. It has hauled anything we have had to stuff into it. June 18, 2016 Update: Just passed 132K. Have just been filling the tank and changing the oil/filter. And enjoying every mile behind the wheel. A comment on the suspension. The GM "ComfortRide" suspension is generally too soft for my liking. On normal roads it can get a little bouncy. But where the suspension really excels is on gravel or dirt roads, or pothole-filled gravel parking lots. Still, overall, I would like it to be more controlled in normal driving. Sept 30, 2016 Update: Just passed 139K miles. Still just changing the oil/filter, rotating the tires. Our most recent new task for the tireless Tahoe has been to tow a roughly 3000 pound travel trailer. Recently took in on a 3000 mile trip from Dallas to Myrtle Beach and back. We use tow-haul mode depending on the situation (hills, heavy traffic, etc.) - works as advertised. Even with the 3.73 rear end and the 325 CID V8 (yields about 1900RPM at 70MPH in 4th/OD gear), you feel the extra weight of the trailer. Still, the 325 seems to have plenty of power when needed when going up hills and passing slower traffic. Real world gas mileage continues to be 12-14 around town, 16-17 highway - without the trailer; 13-14 highway while towing the trailer.

Purchased LT 4x4 model used with 42K miles on it...now 130K miles later the only thing I've had to do is put gas and oil in this work horse and it goes! I have owned everything under the sun and typically have maintenance problems with vehicles around 100K, but the Tahoe has broken that mold and I could not be happier. Hopefully they still make them like this when I buy a newer one.

2002 Z71 Tahoe Review

Bought the Z71 and am loving every minute of it. Traded in a 4Runner and Im not sorry I did. Love the ride, and feel very safe in the vehicle, its nice to know that SUV's dont come much bigger than yours. Huge amounts of storage, and with the Z71 there's no third seat to get in your way. Its got tons of power thanks to the 5.3L V-8, it definately would beat the 4Runner in acceleration any day.

I'll miss my Tahoe. My mom and dad bought it with about 45k miles on it and gave it to me when it got to about 190k. I drove it for about 3 years until it got to 265k! I had to replace some things but at over 200k miles I felt like that was normal. Then, I got a 2009 Buick Enclave with 28k miles on it and have had to do more work to it than I ever thought about doing to the Tahoe! Great car to own.

I purchased this new in 2002, still own it in 2020 with 350,000 miles. Everything on this vehicle is easy for a DYI mechanic. Room to spare, just basic maintenance, Tires, belt, battery, bulbs the normal items. Plenty of power, very good towing, I can drive it for 10 hrs without feeling worn out. It has simply never let me down. I will drive the wheels off of it before selling it.

Awesome & Tireless Tahoe

June 6, 2020 update: 243,000. 5.3 (325 CID, “Z”) I been replacing some parts that have just plain worn out. Front wheel bearings, front and rear bump stops. Otherwise just keeping up with maintenance. Still on the original transmission, with no repairs required. Oil usage continues to be low. I run 4000-5000 miles between changes and it does not need oil between changes. May 28, 2019 Update: The tireless Tahoe now has over 211,000 miles. It has NEVER failed us, no matter how far we travel (some 15 hour travel days), over any terrain (TX to CO, through the Raton Pass in NM), oftentimes towing our small molded fiberglass travel trailer. Oil usage continues to impress, still estimating using no more than a quart every 6,000s as I change the oil and filter every 4,000-5,000 miles and I have never had to add a quart between oil changes. I finally replaced the idler pulley and the ORIGINAL 2 belt tensioner pulleys at about 205,000 because one of them was squealing pretty consistently. Otherwise, its just been normal maintenance and replacing the occasional wear-out item (like the tensioners, battery, etc.). I am also going to toss in a shout-out to the GM seat guys - probably the most comfortable leather seats ever put in a vehicle. Long drives are never painful or tiresome. Can't say enough positives about this truly well-made, comfortable, reliable vehicle. This generation Tahoe (2000-2006) is probably the best GM ever made. Update December 5, 2019 Since last review pressed the Tahoe into service towing a 3000# travel trailer 13,655 miles from western NC to Alaska and back. Seven weeks and only one hiccup, that being a failed alternator. However, cannot fault an original part that failed at about 225k miles. Otherwise, recently replaced the rear axle seals and had the ebrake adjusted. Vehicle currently has just over 235k miles and continues to run strong.

Believe it or not,our Yukon had 160000 miles when I bought it for my wife on Mothers Day 09. Except for a water pump replacement, which was a snap to do myself, we have had no sign of trouble with this Black Beauty. Great ride. Very comfortable. A little hard on fuel but we don't complain. 12 mpg on average. It was as new inside and out when we bought it and still is as new. A wonderful Vehicle. Only one problem. The transmission went out initially at 75k miles, then again with 97k miles on it (luckily under the 36k warranty). Now with 106k miles on it the flex fuel sensor has gone out, and guess what? It is a dealer only part (quote for $800.00 from dealer to fix) You can buy on-line from GM for about $300.00 vs $500.00 at the dealer (love the markup) All in all I will never own anything from Government Motors again, worst reliability of any vehicle I have ever owned. Which is saying something as I have owned an old IH Scout which lasted longer and caused me less head aches.

Even though I don't have anything or anyone to haul around, I love having the room if I need it. Actually, I did once deliver a new stove and it fit in the back with the seat folded down. Not great gas mileage - but I'm glad I have the power to get on the highway with no problems.

I've been bitten by the piston slap GM engine at less than 25k miles. The dealership is hesitant to do anything other than give me the "carbon-top runaround." I'd be wary to ever own another GM product. The warranty isn't worth the paper it was written on. At this point the dealers refuse to look at the truck when I tell them that the engine is making noise. Sadly, my next vehicle purchase (Jan 05) will be affected by this unfortunate situation.

After driving a 97 Nissan Pathfinder for 5 years, I though ride quality couldn't be improved on another SUV. I was wrong. This car rides like a well mannered Cadillac. 5.3 V8 is a must. Has a nice throaty V8 rumble when you punch it. low road noise compared to my wifes new Ford Exploder which we hate. Very little cargo room when 3rd row seat isn't folded up. Fuel economy totally stinks, especially if you like to utilize the big V8 (which I do.) Turning radius is absolutely fantastic, light years better than my Pathfinder or the Exploder even though they are much smaller. I feel very safe carrying my 9 month old. I couldn't ask for a better family car!

We bought our 2002 Tahoe with 99K on it. It was super clean. Within the first 3 months we replaced the rack and pinon steering, and the front A/C condensor. One year later we replaced the back A/C condensor. Then it began to die while driving, let it cool off and it would do it again, all b4 125K. I think I got a lemon because everybody else gets 200K from them. I loved our Tahoe and I am going to buy another one, if I get burned again it will be the last one I buy, but I really dont expect that to happen.

Recently upgraded from my 1998 Tahoe LT to this one. Big mistake, in under 4k mi. the power-steering pump shaft broke (making my return trip from the lake the best upper body workout of my life). After 3 days waiting for a new PS pump, got it back and now I am blowing interior light and sunroof fuses every 15 minutes for no apparent reason. Transmission clunks loudly when I pull my small boat, and still having trouble with climate control system (A/C goes on for no reason, and no it was not set on auto)! If possible I will unload this albatross and buy 1999 Landcruiser with 45k Mi.

We have the 4.8L which is adequate. The size, space & comfort are excellent. Incredible options for the base 4Wd vehichle including AWD. 50/50 3rd row is superior to essentially all competition for ease of folding/removal & functionality (most are a 1-piece bench). Superior look, quality feel & ride vs. the competition.

I have owned other SUV's, but the Tahoe is definitely delivers a lot more for the money. Overall the Tahoe has been reliable and fun to operate. The interior manufacturing quality and design is somewhat less than what I would expect from a $38,000 SUV. A few trim details have come loose and had to be repaired by the dealer. Door hinge spot-welds have come loose also requiring a trip back to the dealer. The interior could be improved without have to upgrade to the full leather package. Overall... very satisfied.

My wife and I were looking for a bigger Suv than the current Lexus RX 300 we had. We headed over to the Cadillac Dealer and checked out the Escalades. Now I'm not going to lie, I love this truck. But I didnt love the $900 lease payment we would have had. Leaving the dealer we drove by the Chevrolet dealer and figured we'd go check out a Tahoe. The rest is history. This SUV, in my opinion is an incredible vehicle at any price. Never mind the fact that a fully loaded Tahoe will run you about 12k less than a no option Escalade. We Put on 20 wheels, billet Grill, exhaust, and removed all the emblems...and this thing looks REALLY GOOD! Now go get one!

This is a 2001 model, purchased new 5/01. Dealer sales and service practices are excellent. No problems with the vehicle after 10 months. We use it on trips out of town 6 or 7 times a year. Other than that it is a daily commuter vehicle for a short drive to work. I have towed a small motorcycle trailer and it tows perfectly. We traded a '96 Yukon and this vehicle is just the next generation and more useful as the Yukon was nly a 2 door GT.

240,000 mi and counting no problems mechanically, or electronically. However, GM discontinued analog Onstar in 2004, which stinks!! but other than that this vehicle masters in reliability. Zero problems, and no stranded or unsatisfied drivers. My Tahoe proves that GM can meet if not beat foreign automakers in reliability, and i hope it's seen more, and more people will buy GM, and mot Foreign. Despite SUV still looks, drives, and rides great. I have 1000% confidence that this Tahoe will no problem rolling over to 3 if not 500,000 miles. Domestics are as reliable as the Foreign automakers advertise, only I've got the physical evidence to prove the above statement. I love this tahoe!!

Prior to buying the Tahoe, I drove every competing model (Ford/Toyota/Dodge). Hands down I liked the Tahoe the best (ride, comfort, ameneties, price, etc.). So far, I love it! Everything else I looked at was over-priced for the total value I was getting in return and the Chevy was just too good compared to the others to pass up. Funny thing, I've never owned and American car/truck before and this Chevy Tahoe impresses the heck out of me every time I sit in it. Just awesome!

I bought my 2002 Chevy Tahoe LT brand new and took great care of it. I hoped to drive it for another 15 years; however, my wife, while parked in traffic was rear ended by a 2017 Dodge Ram moving at 60 MPH. I'm pretty certain that if my bride wasn't in the Tahoe the Lord would have taken her home. With only 145,000 miles I only had three repairs: 2 water pumps, 1 at 105,000 and another at 137,00 miles the third repair was the A/C. I highly recommend the Tahoe to anyone looking for reliability and safety.

Great power, smooth ride and lots of space! I have also been getting good gas mileage (18-20.5 mpg). However, I am dissapointed in the interior. The fabric on the cushions of my seats was not sewn well at all. Also, after riding in a Toyota Sequoia, I realize how small and relatively uncomfortable the Tahoe back seat is. Also, despite its weight and wide tires (265/70 R16), it gets blown around in the wind. When you have a substantial side-wind, you get a lot of leaks in the door and along the floor. One more thing, the bench seat option doesn't have a good range of adjustments for the seats. Short drivers might have a hard time. I'm 6'1" and I keep the seat as high as it will go.

Amazing that people complain about gas mileage on a large SUV that pulls almost 9,000lbs. I've had my Tahoe for 6 years and will never sell it (I've never kept a car longer than 5 years). ZERO repairs, only maint. The ONLY thing that REALLY bothers me is my Onstar was ANALOG and was canceled a couple years ago by GM with no opportunity to upgrade, even if I paid for it. It WAS one of my favorite features. The most surprising characteristic...the ride! It rides like a car on the highway, very smooth. Power is awesome, and since I avg. 75 on CA freeways, mileage is normal. The AUTO 4wd is superb, trany strong, and the Vortec engines are bulletproof. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

The autoride is really awful. The dealer said it would imporve stability but it makes the SUV handle like a drunken cow. It is terrible to drive in the highway and almost impossible to keep on the road. It feels like one of those old Caddilacs with Jello shocks with the tire air pressure at 6 pounds. We have a small boat and it feels like a 19 foot boat in 5 foot seas. It wiggles and wobbles and sways around where you need dramamine. Awful. Other than that and the gas mileage it is a great truck, or would be without the autoride.

Worst vehicle I ever owned. Steering intermediate shaft needs lubed every 3000 miles. Engine knocks when first started. I get maybe,12 MPG. Seats are the worst I ever had the misfortune to sit in. If ninety % use their vehicle for transport of the driver only, why don't these idiot engineers design a vehicle that a person over 5'2" can get comfortable in. I mean does it make sense to cram a person in a cocoon shaped drivers compartment with their feet stuck in one position, the floor curved, so their feet are never on a flat surface, a steering wheel that will not adjust fwd and aft, seats that only adjust the bottom half, arm rest that stick in the air when top half is reclined.

My Tahoe has been great, I love the size, but I have a few suggestions. It's been a great, reliable car. But I will not get another until they fix these things. I am looking at an Infinity QX56.

GM employees don't care about quality.

From the designers and engineers to the management, sales and marketing people, and the people building the Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade, Yukon and Denali, it's clear that GM is "Like a Crock." These reviews are limited to 700 words, so I can't explain all the faults. Suffice it to say, I've had enough trouble to invoke the lemon law only to find my truck was "average."

Love my Tahoe!! I pull a 20' boat occasionally, and it's a breeze! I'm a big guy (6'4") and I love the roominess. It's also a very comfortable ride, great amenities (all power seats, windows, etc., etc.), pretty good sound system, push-button 4WD. I've garaged it and otherwise tried to maintain it well w/regular service. It has been extremely dependable and very utilitarian (hey, it's a sport "utility" vehicle, right)? If you are in the market for a used but dependable, well-performing, roomy SUV (understanding you won't get Prius mileage, to say the least) and can find one well-maintained, go for it!!

Our Z71 takes the rugged farm we enjoy with ease, holds two 100lb. dogs with ease and after a good cleaning can hold it's own with any SUV out on the market! We are very selective in our SUV choices and the Z71 model caught our attention!

This I think is more reliable than any car i have had or driven. People think the Japanese make the most reliable cars but they don't. This truck has never let me or my family down rain or shine.

2002 4WD 5.3L LT w/ Autoride suspension Loaded w/ all the bells & whistles except the sunroof which I don't really care for. This is my 1st big rig and it's surpassed my expectation. Exterior styling is conservative but looks good. Gas mileage is good for an engine this size. Autoride is a big plus when come to towing. I replaced the orginal tires & wheels after the 1st 2 wks owning it and now it looks better than ever. So far no problem.

i recently purchased my new tahoe after having to trade my z71 pickup in... huge difference in room power and comfort...after paying $28 and some change p/ttt i got a great deal....all the leg room for front and rear passangers is a major selling point when i bought it....plus the bigger engine provides enough passing power at high way speeds

Autoride Alert

Beware. Do NOT get the Autoride option on this vehicle. I have had mine to the dealership three times because the vehicle is extremely unstable. It feels like the vehicle is in a constant crosswind and the driver has to fight to keep it on the road. My wife is afraid to drive it. Any road irregularity and it bobs, wiggles and undulates while trying to wander right or left. The autoride system is constantly trying to keep the vehicle level or adjust to the road but it ends up causing gyrations that frighten me. Instead of being relaxed after driving it I am stressed and on edge. Autoride in my opinion is unsafe and a hazard. DO NOT get the autoride

I found a way to save some money. First ask the dealer to throw in the scotch guard for the seats. Then when they ask about the extended warrenty. Have them go talk to the manager to lower the price since the extended warranties include the scotch guard program. Saved me $400.00 and I bought the extended warrenty. I love this vehicle. Im still breaking her in so I could have a few more to say but thank you Chevy for the rebates and intrest rates! Killer truck
