JUNK JUNK JUNK
Had this car 1.5 years and was at the dealer over a dozen time. I tried to buy an American Car... Very bad choice. I now have a Camry and can sleep at night.

47/48 mpg is a straight up lie!
I bought a 16 Malibu hybrid to replace my Jetta tdi (scandal buyback) from the first tank I was skeptical of the posted fuel economy, my dealer had excuse after excuse( break in, cold weather, driving habits) for the poor fuel economy, I have yet to get better than 35 mpg out of a tank, lifetime average of 34.7mpg over 6300 miles. I drive 60,000 miles per year which translates to an extra $2000 in fuel costs getting only 75% of the window sticker economy of 48 mpg. I contacted gm but they would do nothing at all and said it had to be my driving habit. Given my vw is a diesel and not a hybrid, it's rated for 42mpg and since 2013 I've had very few tanks of fuel less than 50mpg (8 mpg over rating) so I'm fairly certain it's not me. 2017 malibu hybrid is rated for 6 less mpg than 2016, odd considering the power train hasn't changed, hope they start a class action against gm, I'll join in! And for anyone thinking I'm a gm hater, I'm not, I also have a 15 duramax sierra Denali, a 14 Acadia Denali, an 02 quadrasteer sierra Denali and an 06 envoy, all of which I've been very happy with. I can honestly say after this experience I'll never buy another gm product, not for the car itself, but for the way I was treated, gm may as well just said "hey, thanks for being loyal and spending almost a quarter million dollars on our vehicles in the past ten years, now bend over and accept our thank you" because that's how i interpreted it! Long story short, Stay away from the hybrid!!!! And if you buy any Malibu, invest in a travel pillow for your back, you'll need it if you drive more than a half hour!

This is the Premier line which also sums up my disappointment in the car. The under dash rattle is in harmony with the door panels that chatter. The last GM I bought was 1988 and it will be another 30 years maybe before I try one again. In our family between the two GM's, 3 jeeps, 2 dodges, 1 Ford, 3 Honda',s and 2 Hyundai's prove that cars can be made that don't rattle. It's a sexy car and semi-fun to drive, just not enjoyable to own. It is a bad copy of a good import.

My dad is Malibu Man
Over 2.5 years ago, my dad bought a new 2016 Malibu, a burgundy one he named Lucille. So far, with just over 15,000 miles, she's had maintenance and being out of alignment after contact with a curb when she was a year old. Also was part of the recalls on these Malibus. Update: Lucille now has mileage in the high 30,000's, something like 37,000 and will soon need tires, no later than this fall. To date, she's been maintenance only, same as before, excluding the out of alignment and recalls.

Death trap
Worst car I've ever owned!Purchased brand new! was okay until the 30,000 mark. Took in for car not shutting off at 35,6000. Just over bumper to bumper warranty! They replaced shifter luckily I purchased extended warenty, that's what the dealer said, really? it's been regularly maintained every 5000 miles has died on me saying engine shutting down losing power and almost killing Me! suggesting I replace gas cap two weeks later died 8 times on a 40 minute trip! Dealer does nothing! I'm getting ready of this POS as soon as possible before it kills me and my family! Will never buy a Chevy again!!!

GM never again
I leased my Malibu new in 2016. For the almost three years I had this sad excuse for a car, I experienced nothing but repairs, repairs, repairs, at least a dozen not counting several recalls. Those repairs included gear shift replacement oxygen sensor replacement, complete brake failure, piston replacement, knocking in the rear end and water leak into the trunk. Considering how much money I lost in wages due to a considerable low inventory of loaners at two GM dealerships, I would never consider this lemon as anything but one of the worst vehicles GM has ever made. I attempted to have GM buy back the car when it became such a safety hazzard due to loss of power issues, once with my four-year-old granddaughter in the car, but they wouldn't budge. However they would give me a nice break on a new downgraded Cruz. Like that was going to happen. I toughed it out until about four months from my lease expiration and then I opened the trunk and found my work supplies soaked AGAIN after it was supposedly repaired. I'd had enough and turned it in early despite the consequences. According to GMAC, I still owe a $1,300 balance (received one notice that the car had been sold and a list of unexplained charges tacked on), which they will never see even though they're knocking my great credit. Oddly enough, I've gotten several calls from GM dealerships offering to sell me another Malibu and forgiving my remaining lease "payments". No way. I have a Nissan Altima and I am quite happy. In closing, buyer beware when buying a Malibu of any kind. If you will do your research you will find there are 600 plus service bulletins on this car, many of which should be automatic recalls. GM has totally dropped the ball as far as I'm concerned

This ain't no Camry
Had the car for a long term rental. Thoroughly unimpressed. Really sluggish acceleration. Transmission not ver responsive especially in reverse. The car wallowed like an overloaded boat even with only two people in it. Decent interior room but not much more to say on a positive note. Suffered seriously in comparison with our Camry and Sonata.

GM MAKES JUNK
DON'T buy this car with the start / stop system you will hate it, it works when it wants to. The transmission is so clunky, the car skips and lunges when you least expect. Let's not forget the dealerships are not telling you about the start/stop system, when I test drove mine it never shut off once until I got home and drove it that night(Thursday). I called the dealership they told me to bring it in Monday, then they said " What your experiencing is the start/stop system. I told them I didn't want the car, they told me too bad. I HATE this car, it's JUNK!!!!!!!!!

Thank God it was just a rental
I would rather drive my 17 year old honda than this p.o.s. the ride was so noisy and unsteady, too many blind spots, interior is very poorly designed. I seriously didn't feel safe driving the car due to its poor outward visibility, and shaking, I had to to exchange it a better designed sedan (sonata).this experience has forced me to never consider GM products for anything.you would think a brand new car would have more pep,but then again it's a chevy.

Don’t change lanes
Horrible blind spots, out of town for work had a Malibu on one trip and a Cruze on another, seems like the entire design was to see who could create the biggest blind spot. In the market for a new car, at this point I cannot consider a Chevy product

Shitty car
Such a bad car! Dont buy!! Had my car for 3 months bought used but only had 23k miles, my stabilatrak and engine light came on. Took it to the dealership and this car had a recall on it from GM where they switch the oil to synthetic oil for cracked pistons. And turns out mine had the cracked pistons, the dealership had my car for almost 2 months l. Got it back and my car felt funny and it has to go back and have the steering module replaced. Then also before this happened the back window was leaking as I went though the drive though and I took it in for them to fix it and it was fixed for a while but then started leaking again and they wouldn't do anything about it because it wasnt inder warrenty anymore! Worst car ever!!

Do not buy
My Malibu has had nothing but problems I was conned it to buy the bumper to bumper extended warranty took it to dealer ship for a trunk leak and an engine code and a water sound under the dash they told me the trunk leak was not covered under warranty and would be $200 to fix with a replacement seal for the break light the water sound was normal the the engine light was because it was cold out it was mid 40's which shouldn't be cold enough to cause a problem in my opinion I tried calling part stores to order the break light seal no parts stores had it nor had they heard of a break light seal after Google searching I found that that this has happened to hundreds of mabilu owners and no recalls have been made although a dealer only part that does not originally come on the car has been made for the issue

Get the Extended Warranty!
My Malibu is just 3 years old and already we are replacing the motor - in addition to the extensive warranty "maintenance" work we had to have done last year (~ $700 unplanned expenses)!! My dad was a mechanic so I know that regular maintenance is a MUST and we maintained the car well. Still, somehow the rings inside the cylinders failed and trashed the motor.... THREE YEARS OLD??? (I should mention here that our service guy said he'd seen them fail at 3 MONTHS and that it's not extremely unusual for this to happen)... If you do decide to purchase the Malibu for some odd reason GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. NEVER in my 50+ years have I needed one. We initially got one with this car because it was new and my dad had lost his touch as part of aging. When I reviewed the warranty details (which you get by mail a couple of weeks after buying the car), I wasn't sure that it was going to really be worth the $$. I went to the dealership to speak with the guy that sold me the warranty to ensure I was understanding the details properly - he'd been fired shortly after we bought our car for dishonest practices. That made me leary of the value of the warranty I'd purchased so I asked a guy in finance about it (this was 3 years ago so I don't remember who exactly I spoke with - just a manager in finance). HE told me the warranty was "not really useful". Odd thing for a finance guy to say - so I figured he was being straight with me & helping me save some $$..... Based on his lack of faith in the value of the extended warranty and our need to cut back financially on non-essentials, we cancelled the warranty.... Fast-forward to today - the car is under the 5 years but OVER the mileage of the standard warranty (covered up to 60,000; currently has 71,000) and the motor has to be replaced. Asked the service guy - if we'd had the extended warranty, how much would we be paying out of pocket? Answer: $0.00! Without the warranty??? GM is kind enough to spot us 50% of the cost, so it's "only" $4,202!!!

Very Upset with my 2016 Malibu
I purchased my car brand new with 0 miles and I have been having nothing but ISSUES! My rear window leaks real bad when it’s going through a car wash or if it rains it smells like something is wet. I’ve had my back light replaced 3 times because the Chevy dealership states that’s what the issue is AND ITS CLEAR THATS NOT IT! I’ve been nothing but patience every visit and have spent over $500 every time and now that my car has been in the shop for a week waiting on the GMC strike to be over so they can get the part I get a call saying they want me to pay $100 to get it replaced even though I just paid $500 almost 4 months ago SMH worse investment EVER! Once I get my car back I’m going to trade it in because I know whatever they will do this visit STILL WONT FIX THE ISSUE.

Typical GM
Engine light has been on half of the cars life. Dealer can’t figure out the what causes the code. Lost power going onto express way. And everything that breaks just happens to be past the warranty. So it comes out of my pocket. Fit and finish is terrible inside and out. Drivers seat broke, Bluetooth works when it wants to. Windows not lined up right so they leak and make a whistle sound going down the road. Save yourself the headache and get a Toyota or Ford.

Worst Car I Ever Owned
In essence, this is an overpriced beautiful piece of crap. It's got beautiful "packaging" but there is nothing inside. Let me count the ways in which this vehicle failed me. 1. Refused to shut off. Shift to Park problem. I was forced to drive with it like this for 8 months before dealer could replicate the problem. Sometimes I would have to turn the car off and on 13 times before the car would finally acknowledge it was off. This was very stressful especially if you want to park in a crowded parking garage or bring the car on the ferry. Good luck. The car might not shut off and you will be in a jam. 2. Infotainment System went out when car was still under warranty. This means the backup camera no longer worked plus I had no GPS or music. 3. Bad Sightlines: You actually need the backup camera in order to back up safely in this thing. 4. Shift to Park Problem resurfaced.. Once again, I was dealing with a car that might not shut off. I knew I had to get rid of it when this problem resurfaced. A bit of research reveals that Chevy simply replaces the faulty sensor with the same ill-performing sensor, thus, insuring that this problem will keep happening and it will cost YOU to keep fixing it. 5. Pedal Accelerator Sensor went out. Car refused to go more than 25 mph. On a steep hill, it dropped to 19 mph. The car bucked and shuddered all the way to my house. This is an extremely dangerous problem. Thankfully, I was on a back road when it happened and not on a major highway. 6. The trunk and exterior seal developed a leak which I have since discovered is very common in these vehicles. Last summer, the windows steamed up when the car was sitting in my driveway due to excessive moisture caused by lack of airtight seal. When I opened the trunk, it was damp and smelled like mildew. 7. Bucket seats are extremely uncomfortable. When I first purchased the car, they didn't bother me but over time, I noticed I was in pain whenever I drove the car. I finally had to put a pillow in the driver's seat to alleviate the discomfort. My car was still under warranty. It only had 54,000 miles on it and I dumped the piece of crap. I am now in the process of buying a used Acura. I learned my lesson. Stay away from Chevy and all GMC vehicles. If the car is faulty, the corporation will do nothing to address the problem in a real way and will keep throwing the same flawed part back into your vehicle. At some point, your warranty will be over but your problems will continue . . .AT YOUR EXPENSE. Chevy Corporate and GMC do NOTHING to help their customers! They refuse to issue recalls for these known defects and force customers to drive with very unsafe conditions. As a result, I will never own another GMC vehicle again.

Don't Buy This Car - You'll Regret It!
My 2014 Odyssey was hit in the rear pretty bad a week ago. His name is Reggie, poor Reggie. It is in the body shop getting repaired. I have this 2016 Malibu Eco LTZ as a rental for two weeks from Hertz. To be fair, overall it is a nice car. Handles nicely like a German car - like our 2000 Jetta when it was new. The styling is nice, the technology is nice, the ride is sporty and fun to drive, the handling is sporty and fun to drive. HOWEVER, all the nice features fall apart because it is designed to completely stop and turn off when you come to a complete stop in order to save gas. It is a HORRIBLE and extremely ANNOYING feature!!!! Our Honda van has an eco mode that saves gas but it does not involve turning completely off at every single stop light. The eco mode of our van does not turn off to save gas but engages when the car is MOVING. This Malibu is a nightmare to drive because of this aggravating feature. We have begun making a game of it to keep from getting mad. If you turn the Air conditioning on (comfort mode not eco mode), the engine sorta turns off less. If you shift into Neutral as you stop at a stoplight, it keeps running. If you press on the gas lightly as you have your foot firmly down on the brake at a complete stop, it does not shut off. Even more of a JOKE, at a long stop light, the car will just UNEXPECTEDLY turns back on on its own if you are at a long long light. What a JOKE about saving gas! Thankfully, it is only a rental and I can turn it back into Hertz in two weeks. We have named the car Obama, as the president and his eco nut friends are probably very proud of themselves for inspiring such a junky car feature to save gas - eco nuts! Don’t buy this car if you are a car enthusiast or a enjoy driving like us, the shut off feature will drive you nuts unless you make it a game.

UNRELIABLE!!!!
Please reconsider ever buying a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, or probably any Malibu for that matter. My 2016 Malibu does NOT start. One day it just stopped starting, you have to try multiple times. The dash sometimes works and sometimes does not. The lights will flicker or the control panel for A/C and heat won't work at all. Chevrolet is NOT the same as it used to be. I may need to stop being a Chevy fan. Single Mom with a non-running car that I can't find the solution to fix or even trade in.

Lower back isses and tall, Stay AWAY!!
On this model do not get it. The manual seats have this funky ratcheting lever that raises the seat. I'm 6'2" tall and now my head hits the roof as I enter and leave the car besides my lower back is killing me due to non-existent lumbar support. The goofy auto stop feature sometimes kicks on and feels like someone just hit the rear bumper. Needs some major work. Already complained the very next business day to get the Tuff F.U. from the dealer and sales department. They don't care at all, but now since they do when my feet go numb because of their crappy seat and causes an accident, they will be held liable!

If you need a reliable vehicle don't buy, has less than 30,000 miles on it and a lot of computer problems, engine knocking, auto stop stutters between on off at a stop light like it's not sure what to do. It's at the dealership right now for the second time this month. I've owned this car a month bought certified pre owned. if you want something you can sit in and impress your neighbors by keeping up with the Jonas's and not leave your driveway get it.

Highly Recommend the new Malibu
My wife has owned this car for over three years; it has 57K trouble free miles on it. It gets incredible gas mileage 37mpg and drives wonderful. Minor complaints are the below average stereo system and the infotainment sometimes fails to pick up phone calls properly as well. After driving just about all the cars in it's class, I think the steering is by far superior. What a great value!

Awful car
Got this car with around 7 miles on it in July of 2016. In summer of 2018 I began to notice moisture and a pungent mildew odor inside the vehicle. Turns out, the back glass was leaking profusely and it saturated the trunk and headliner. Dealership had the car for over a month and replaced the headliner. Turns out, it’s a GM “bulletin” (basically a mild recall). Airbag light then came on after picking it up. Fast forward to January 2019 and the car shuts off while idling and had to be towed back to the dealership (56xxx miles). It’s been there roughly three weeks and dealership still does not know the extent of the damage. They’re speculating that the water entry (in the rear glass area) potentially damaged some wiring. Very small gas tank and the drivers seat is horribly uncomfortable. Oh, and the front windshield is now leaking. General Motors garbage!

Unreliable and low resale value
Bought this car brand new an had nothing but problems. I have put 27k miles on it in 3 years and have had major mechanical issues. Turbo and pistons went out twice which was a $6000 repair each time (luckily warranty covered it) lots of random little things failing like the trunk seal leaked, shifter wouldn’t recognize the car was in park so it wouldn’t turn off, door trim falling off, also loud on the road and uncomfortable to drive. The resale value is also terrible. Lost over 50% of value in the first 3 years despite getting a good deal on the car.

Above average
I really like the Chevy Malibu, and would have easily rated the vehicle 4+ stars except for the issues that I had with the vehicle. First maybe the old adage about not purchasing the first year of a new model. I find the 2016 Malibu Premier to be a beautiful vehicle, with all the trim is really an excellent value. My issues were that the third brake light leaked so had to replace two headliners, gear shift had an issue where it didn't recognize that it was in park, valve cover had to be replaced for some unknown reason. Aside from those issues, the car is overall a nice buy.

Run
Unsafe! Didn’t have car for two months before serious problems started arising. While on the highway the engine light popped on and a message popped up stating that engine speed was reducing. It didn’t gradually happen it happened immediately! I was almost rear ended because of this. General Motors knows of Of this issue and has yet to fix it! I have to get the entire gas pedal replaced. The gas pedal should last the life of the vehicle. We use to buy Chevys all the time sad to say this will be my last Chevy.
Great commuter, mpg’s, and space
Went to the dealer to look at a Chevy Cruze, as I needed a fuel efficient vehicle for my long commute. I ended up test driving a Malibu as well that they had on the lot. I was impressed by the roominess, and with Ya having a new baby I’m glad I did end up getting the malibu. Lots more room, the trunk room is great. Any one that comes for a ride fits comfortably, front or back. My car is the 1.5 Turbo model. It’s isn’t a very fast car, but definitely has ample enough power for my commute. It’s quicker than you would expect, though. Fuel mileage is excellent. In cruise control without the a/c on I can get 40 mpg on my mostly highway commute. 35 mpg with the a/c on or in winter time. Apple CarPlay being equipped on my base model LS is a very welcome addition, and works great. My car now has 90,000 miles. In that time the suspension still feels as solid as it did new, and I recently checked the brakes and they still have a lot of life left on them. I did have a gas pedal sensor go bad at 50,000 miles, but it was covered under warranty. Also had a problem with the third brake light leaking, but that was also covered and fixed. Finally it did have an oil pan leak, also covered by the warranty. Other than those covered repairs it has been a very reliable car. A pleasure to drive, and much better than the previous year Malibu’s which I didn’t care for at all. Update: 110,000 miles now. No other problems, still drives like a new car.

What a nightmare
Since the day I purchased my vehicle I have had major engine & computer issues. What they do is they temporarily repair it and it happens again. They repair it again in a while later it happens again and then when the same issue keeps happening they refuse to do anything about it and eventually your warranty ends. My car says shift to park even though it is in park. The entire car stays lit up. My car also tells me I don’t have my remote even though I do. Pistons had to be replaced three different times. Three separate times my computer in my car completely stopped in the middle of an intersection and would not even turn the hazards on. I can go on and on . My sunroof has leaked several times. My car does not even have 50,000 miles on it it is parked in a garage and I babysit. They basically keep fixing it without ever really getting rid of the problem until the warranty expires and you are left with a car that doesn’t work.

Amazing at first but turned DANGEROUS
My 16 Malibu has been an amazing car. Always dependable, never any issues. We recently started having an issue where we would get a "reduced engine power" message and we suddenly would drop down in speed dramatically. I'm talking from 75 to 40 to 25 in a matter of minutes. On the highway. In traffic..... This is a known issue on this year and model but GM has done nothing about it. I also want to point out another potentially deadly issue. The trunk. There is no manual way to release the trunk latch from the outside of the battery is dead. I know they have the trunk pills but if someone were incapacitated in the trunk and someone was trying to get them out, they wouldn't be able to. There's no button to let the back seats down from the inside of the car as they are in the trunk, there is no manual push button like they had in the 2012 model, and there is no manual key option on the lid.

Great until 90K Miles
I haven’t had any problems out of my 2016 Malibu LT until I hit 90k miles. I noticed an oil leak Thursday evening and Friday morning I took it to the dealer. It was the head gasket and they wanted $4400 to fix. I was able to get the car repaired for half that price but I am not sure if I should trade it in or keep it now.
Great until 90K miles
Other than the annoying shift to park and mandatory recall work, I didn't have any problems with my car until the odometer struck 90K miles. One day i was backing out of the garage and notice a good amount of oil on the floor. The next morning I took it to Chevy and they advised that I had a gasket head leak and wanted $4000 to fix it. I was able to get the car fixed at a local mechanic for half the price. Debating if I should keep the car or trade it in.
189,000 miles and counting
Car has been a great daily driver as well as a long trip vehicle. I drive from South Dakota to Denver often and always get a round trip mpg of 33-36 and thats fighting against Wyoming winds. The car performs well for what it is intended to do.

My Old Lady is rocking it.
This car is my favorite by far. At nearly 180 thousand miles, she has held up well. I have kept up with maintainance and have used the higher grade gasoline the whole time. My only issue has been the paint on the hood and top of vehicle. I missed out on the paint recall, otherwise a great car.

GM can do better than this, but won't!
Bought this lemon December 2018 with 61k miles. Headlights were useless, brought back next business day, dealer tried to say I'd wrecked the car (I hadn't). Took three attempts and threats of legal action to get it even sort of fixed (I had to adjust the housings and install LED upgrades). In less than a year of ownership, I found piston blow-by, transmission problems and CV axle noise. The infotainment refused to pair to my phone and the 12V socket lost power when the driver's door was opened. Traded it for a Toyota and I haven't looked back since. If you're looking at a GM product with any EcoTec besides the 2.5L - RUN! These things are JUNK! GM screwed up canceling the OHV 2.2, 3.1, 3.3, 3.4 and 3.8! Even my elderly father has dumped GM for Toyota.
Best Vehicle in this Class!!!
I bought my car brand new in 2016 and love it!! The style is what caught my eye, but overall it is a reliable and well built car. I was rear-ended August, 2019 and because of the rear impact bar, my rear passenger walked away from the accident. The truck was dented pretty bad, but that impact bar prevented the truck from ended up in the rear seat. It has great pick-up speed, handling and gas mileage. There a features that this car offers other cars do not have, WiFi, auto-lock (when I walk away the doors auto lock), rear camera (standard), On-Star, Android Auto and so much more. When I had to have a rental car, I was missing my baby so bad. If you have children, the WiFi comes in handy whether you are running errands or taking a long ride. I also drive Uber and Lyft, so offering WiFi to my passengers always gets me a 5 star rating. It also allows you to talk and surf the net without interruption and that is so key when driving for Uber or Lyft, my navigation or apps are never interrupted. I believe that this is one of the best cars in it's class and the rating is too low. Vehicle analyst that provide reports on the vehicle sometimes can be biased because they want the foreign car makers to be on top and that is why they hold their value more so than American made cars. I have driven other cars and the Malibu is in a high class when it comes to safety, style, power, gas mileage and reliability. I have 58K on my 2016 and have not had any issues outside of replacing the battery. I am looking forward to the new upgrades to the vehicle and when it is time for me to get another vehicle, it will be another GM!!!

Surprisingly packs a mean punch!
Currently own a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu lt 1.5T and it’s amazing from the interior to exterior but most importantly they say the acceleration drags it doesn’t. The numbers are not accurate I can get from 0-60 in 6seconds easy I live right off a highway where speed limit is 75mph so you have to pull out on the highway with a lead foot and I do! so far I’m at 55k and it’s still completely flawless. Top speed is unknown but personally have reached 128mph. Pretty sure with the correct speed rated tires this car could compete with other high end sport sedans and top speeds of luxury exotic sports cars.
