Truck with True Grit
I have a 1998 4x4 5.7 v8 extended cab despite the options given on the top of the page. It's got 68k on it, and I really do beat it up. Its been from Northern Illinois to Alabama where I go to school and the ride is that of a new tahoe. I've only had to replace one of the two cat converters, and a fan belt. Its candy apple red, and man, its a great looking truck. I take it on the dirt roads in South Dakota and it just never fails.
Still Truckin'!
I can't kill it! It runs and runs and runs! And it still looks great. I haven't had a significant repair in several years. In my last review (2006), I was happy, but more so now. 130,000 miles on the odometer, which would be significantly more had I not had other vehicles I drive to work. Friends compliment me on its appearance, and I have had offers to buy it. Bullet Proof Reliability is the slogan that belongs to this truck!

1998 Chevy Ext. Cab 3rd door SWB Z-71
I like this truck a whole lot, the 5.7 liter Vortec engine gives plenty of power, the 4L60E Automatic transmission works flawlessly, mine has the push button selector for the 4x4...I'm not to fond of that, but it does work okay. My truck has leather interior, which I like;)Ice cold A/C, good heater, the truck handles like a performance sedan, and handles the heave loads and towing like a real truck should. What more can I say? It is a good truck! Very dependable, I would recommend it to anyone!
GM got it right on this one
Bought with 38k miles on it, now have 190k with origional engine and major parts. Had to replace normal stuff like alternator, water pump, starter and things that wore out. Known problems with these are a short list. Intake manifold leak, usually around 120k miles or so. Once fixed it is great. Fuel pumps, weak, on my 3rd one. The Vortec higher fuel pressure puts a stress on the GM pumps and when they go, can be real pricey. Radiator cracked at plastic side tank. 5.7 Vortec engine is the greatest, real good power, and with the bed loaded I still get 17mpg highway which I don't consider bad for a truck of this size. Holding value better then any car or truck I have owned.
210000 and still going STRONG
I have had this truck for almost 10 years and afraid soon I will have to get another. I am hoping to go to 250,000 before that happens. Purchased it with 65,000 and never had any transmission problems with every other year trans flushes. I work out of this truck and it is put to the Test daily. The Fuel Pump has went out around 100,000 miles this is common. cost $600.00 replaced water pump about same time but that is it nothing else. 10 years and only $800 in repairs. If Chevy made truck like this still they would not be in trouble today.
Chevy Strong
Purchased the pickup a few months back. Has the 5.7 Vortec V8 350 (Monster of torque) Has 102,000 miles and could be sold as brand new. Would trust this vehicle to drive across country and back. Fuel could last a little longer but getting about 16mpg in town which is not bad for a heavy pickup. Everything has held up from paint/clear coat to 0 rust and mechanics. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone needing a powerful yet smooth ride.
The reason I'm sticking to Chevy
This truck is amazing, The only major maintenance that has been done in the 190000 miles it has on it are a replaced transmission due to hot rodding the truck with a superchips tuner and two power steering pumps. The guy who owned it before took pretty good care of it except when he got the superchips tuner and decided to hot rod. I bought it with about 20,000 on the new trany and it;s been a great vehicle for me. I did hot rod it a little bit with the tuner when I first got it. The truck performs as good at 120 as it does at 80. Never had an engine problems and plan on driving it until it dies the n replacing the engine and driving it more.
Luv this truck
Had a few nuisance reliability problems early on (water pump, alternator, radio), but once I had these components replaced with quality replacements I have had few problems. No major repair bills other than the fuel pump (which was probably due to my neglect in changing the fuel filter according the repair shop. Currently the truck has over 200,000 miles and shows no sign of letting up.
I am glad I bought it
I bought this truck new and the price scared me to death. However, I have had no major problem at all. Still looks great! Drives great! The paint shines up fantastic. Now that it is paid for I love it even more. 4wd is awesome & easy, power is fantastic and third door nice. Quiet also. I would definitely buy this truck again! Vortec engine is dependable and the ride of this truck is very nice.
Outstanding Truck.
This truck is over worked and tough. I have hauled a 6 ton float trailer with a 6000 lbs pull truck on it and it still works great. Lots of power and with the load still drives excellent. Would recommend this truck to any one. Great on fuel and very nice to drive.
One of the Best
I have 137000 miles on this truck and it runs great. The tranny died at 113k, but other than that this truck has had no problems whatsoever. It burns no oil, starts right up, and has held up really well. I'll get another 100k out of it no problem. I average 18 mpg on highway, and 12 in the city.I drove 13000 miles in seven weeks on a cross country trip about a year ago in it going as fast as the governor let me (98mph) and it did great. Very comfortable seats for such a long trip. It's a shame they don't build the new ones like this.
First Year
After always driving new trucks (Fords and a Nissan), I tried used - bought this GM. Wow! A truck that is not full of frills, bells, whistles that aren't needed. It is a true truck for the guy who really uses a truck. I haul large items frequently and pull a trailer. I also take it on long distance interstate trips. It is an incredibly solid and reliable truck so far, and has plenty of room for the family. My mechanic swears that with good regular maintenance, I can easily get 250000 miles out of the motor. Bought it with 69000 - it now has 81500. I never thought I'd like a GM, but now I love 'em!
Nice truck
Plenty of power. This truck has 4:10 rear end gear ratio so it pulls trailers easily. And it rides nice too. This is the first truck I have owned that my wife doesn't mind driving.
Most reliable truck ever!!
I bought my 98 Cheyenne ex cab in 99 with 7K miles on it and im still driving it basically daily today in 2018.. It still has the original engine and trans and runs as strong as ever!! Ive replaced the fuel pump 3 times in 19 years and the water pump once at 70K.. This has definitely been the most reliable and dependable vehicle ive ever owned.. 300K shouldnt be a problem

Love this style
I got this truck in on a trade for my old Suburban. I have always loved the style of these trucks and the way the look with a lift kit and the way they sound with an exhaust. I put around 3900 miles on this truck every week i also haul wood and scrap steel the abuse this truck can handle is amazing. I keep the exterior of this truck looking clean and neat. with the right care I expect to run this truck untill it dies. NEVER been stuck in the snow and i have 235-85-16 on the truck with aggressive tread. this Truck is the second one of this style that i have owned the first was a 1993 and i would not change either for the world
Still Ticking
Second owner of this truck when I bought it in 1999. At 265000 miles, it is incredibly reliable. Recent snowstorms required me to pull much newer 2wds out of snowbanks and a couple of Tahoes. I expect to get 300K miles out of the V-6 and will get a new VORTEC at that time. Original tranny, electrics, 4wd, transfer case, and air conditioning. Major parts changed are clutch, fuel pump, and water pump. Normal maintenance otherwise; unbelievable. Getting ready to recover driver's seat and tow my boat this summer. GREAT Truck!!
350 5sp
Bought the truck, and Ill never get rid of it, as the tags show its a 5.7 ltr with a 5 speed manual. The only transmision for a truck. To much power is never enough, Havent found any thing I couldnt tow with-in reason. Great looks and design, is as solid as the day I bought her. No mods to performance yet, but with 170,000 miles on her why should I. I also Did a dealer inspection at 150,000 miles and the engine and transmission are quote "not even broke in" unquote.
disappointed with Chev
I had a 1988 chev and was real happy with it. Bought a used 98 last yr with a 5 litre, auto, 2 wheel dr,and it has cost me plenty. The trani went for a $3,000 touch, rear pinon bearing, manifold gasket, drive shaft seal, thermostat, heater coupler, rad, fuel pump humms like a 747 ready to take off, it's been replaced once already, truck wonders on the road, no pulling power, interior lights work sometimes, frnt seats rattle and move while locked in place, rear seat does the same, squeeky 3rd dr, crappy tire jack design, try changing a tire at 30 below! I'm already looking for a different truck. Really disappointed in Chev.
Great truck
Great dependable vehicle. Third door would be nice, third door on drivers side would be even better. 17 mpg city/22 highway.
Truck
Great truck. Great value.
Very Good Truck
I bought this with 95K on the odometer. I have put 14K on it in 6 months, without a single penny of repair! It also impressed me this year with some of the heavier than expected snow. It never lost traction, or got me stuck. Seems to be a very reliable truck overall.
Very nice truck!
I bought this truck a year ago with 45,000 miles on it and it has been one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. It has the original equiment tires on it and they still have 50% of the tread on them (Firestone Steeltex AT). I get 17 miles to gallon on the road and 14- 15 mpg around town. No squeaks, rattles or other annoying issues. I did put a new set of shocks on it when i got it but that is it. It is a pleasure to drive and own.
I LOVE THIS TRUCK!
I bought this truck from a neighbor when it had 45,000 miles on it and it has been great! it has a towing package on it and i get 13-15 mpg in town and 18 on the road. i really like the vortec 5.7 engine lots of power. it is a roomy quiet truck that is a joy to drive in traffic or on the road.
Reliable. powerful, but heavy.
I got my 98 z71 with only 34k miles on it a few years ago. It's very well built. Easier to work on than other vehicles. Throw a lift and some tires on it and you're ready
Best 9yr old I know
My father bought this truck brand new in '98. I got it in 2000 and I've been driving it since. Great truck, no major problems. The salt air along the coast has taken a toll on the bumpers but other than that cosmetically it's clean. Recently had a dealership mechanic look at it, he couldn't believe it had 170,000 mi on it and told me the engine sounds better than the new trucks they sell.
My favorite vehicle ever
My truck is an excellent ride. Plenty of power with the 5.7l V-8, although gas mileage is not very good. I can pull/haul anything with virtually no power lag. It is good in the snow, just make sure you have sand bags and good tires. There is plenty of room on the interior. My truck has always started and run beautifully. She has 97k miles right now, but she still is a beauty! Make sure to care for your paint. Wash, wax, polish, detail, detail, detail. I always get compliments on my truck because I keep her clean. She has her scratches and dings, but she looks brand new parked by herself.
Not a good tow vehicle!
I bought this 1998 Chevy K1500 with a 5.0/5 speed, to tow a 22' sailboat. It does not have enough torque at a low enough RPM. I even have to downshift from 5th to 3rd going uphill, with no load. Horsepower is lacking also. I also have a 1998 Chevy Metro which is capable of faster acceleration than the truck, when both are empty. I added tie down points to the floor of the bed, because GM evidently didn't think anyone would actually try to haul anything with this "truck". I hauled an empty boat trailer weighing 1500# and this truck only got 11mpg on the highway! I would never buy another one like it. I am seriously considering buying back my S10, to haul my boat- it had torque!
Great truck
Pleasure to drive. 3rd door is a good feature. Ride and quality very good. Gas mileage okay at 15 for a 4wd. Very reliable, no problems.
1998 Chevy K1500 Z-71
Other than a noisy fuel pump, the truck has been extremely reliable. Several dealers have said replacing the fuel pump would not quiet it down as it is inside factory specs. With a 5.7 V-8, the mileage at first was 13 city, 18 highway,I installed a K&N air filter & put a Tornado in the intake and I started getting 16-20 MPG. Incredible increase in H.P. & torque.
Good Truck
At 116k, she's still running strong. Interior is easy to clean, dash board is really cheap and squeaks from time to time, 3rd door is noisy, rear windows are noisy, very reliable overall. Planning to keep this truck well past 400k on the original engine. 1/4 of the way there.
Mike
Excellent vehicle. Powerful engine. Has tow pckg, never towed to date. Pewter/Silver exterior w/black accents and tinted windows. Very classy looking. Burgundt interior. Very comfortable ride, Silverado. Bed liner. CD player, cruise, electric locks, mirrors, etc.
GREAT SO FAR BUT, GETTIG SCARED
I purchased this truck with 90,000 miles on it. I now have 138,000 and have started having minor problems. I,ve replaced the water inlet connector on the motor(according to my mechanic this should be a recall item because all chevy's are having this problem),the water pump, intake gasket,& the altenator.
1998 - EXT - SB - C1500
Solid - That simple Over 5 years only lost the water pump. No other maintenance.
no title
only pronlems i had were power steering pump went after 4 yrs and master cylinder went this yr
Solid dependable workhorse
Solid workhorse. The Silverado package is the way to go if you go used on these. Had it 3 years, only had to replace the waterpump and front brakes. 350 if a proven platform that GM improved yet again with the introduction is Sequential fuel injection. Tows a big bass boat with no problems. Can't wait to get back from overseas to drive it, in storage now.
I Love it
Like the power of the 5.7L, enough but not too much
Great 98
This has been a great truck, my first truck a SWB 2WD 1989, I traded it on on this 1998 K1500 EXT CAB 4WD. I have not put the 159,000 that I put on my 1989 in the 9.5 years that I owned it, but so far this truck has been rock solid.
big red toy
I've come to love my truck very much. Having no problems w/ anything mechanical or electical. Fetures on the truck suite my needs just fine. It preforms very well on and off road, in all types of situations including, deep mud and hevy snow.
Don't Ever Want to Let It Go!
This truck is my baby and it's like that old faithful dog. I would sink more money into this truck to keep it and keep it running than I probably should. Everything has been great with this truck until 2004. The ABS speed sensor has gone bad in the RF wheel and gives a very bad vibration when braking under 5mph. It is now sitting in the driveway awaiting a new clutch and fuel pump. I put bigger tires on it and never have any problems in 4WD. I pull trailers and haul everything imaginable. It's pulls and hauls like a princess, without effort. The mileage, 18-20 on the highway and a very smooth ride are great. Withstood a 50mph collision with a 12pt buck and nary more than a scratch.
Solid Truck
I have had great luck with the truck. No mechanical or electrical problems. I intend to keep it 18-20 more years and if and when I do have problems, most of the equipment is accessible
too many trouble with Compuetr on board
Bought this truck used Im very like it much with evrything but except computer control on board ,34000 mile give me hard time on the road because computer and lucky I bought Extend warranty onthe truck so 1500 for repair ,so when it hit 39000 mile again it happen about computer this time $1800 . 1998 Silverado Ext Cab
This has been the most reliable vehicle that I have owned. Gets about 15 mpg in town. Comfortable with plenty of interior space.

most expensive truck ever
I had to take out a second mortage for all the repairs on this truck!! 115500 miles and already a new transmission, water pump, fuel pump, ball joints, abs sensors,What a piece of junk!! Should have got a Ford!
Good But Not Great
Overall this has been a good vehicle. The brakes are the main complaint. I usually get about 30,000 miles per set on the front. The rear linings are fine. The brakes have never felt that strong. The alternator failed at about 75,000 miles. The rear brake cylinders failed at 94,000 miles at a cost of $450.00 as well as the pitman and idler arms, another $400.00. For the most part I have enjoyed the truck. It has a comfortable ride and enough horsepower to handle most jobs. This truck would be ideal if not for the problems listed above.
