The 2023 Cadillac XT6 is a sharp-looking midsize three-row SUV. Helpful technology features and a comfortable cabin impart good initial impressions. But once you start stacking the XT6 up against the competition, it begins to lose its luster. On top of that, it seems a bit overpriced.

Overview

The biggest of its XT-branded crossover SUVs, the 2023 Cadillac XT6 sits just below the truck-based Escalade in the brand's lineup. This is a family-oriented three-row luxury SUV that competes against models such as Acura MDX, Audi Q7, Lincoln Aviator and Volvo XC90.

For the 2023 XT6, Cadillac has added more standard features to the midlevel and top trims, with navigation and ventilated front seats now standard on Premium Luxury and Sport models. Unchanged for 2023 are the powertrain options. Those two trims still come with a more powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine, while the entry-level Luxury trim uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. All-wheel drive is available on every XT6 model.
We appreciate the XT6's comfortable cabin and its easy-to-use technology suite. While it may be missing out on flair compared to some of its closest rivals (and the Escalade), the XT6 is a well-rounded option for buyers. See our Expert Rating below for our test team's detailed evaluation of the XT6's performance, utility and more.

Average
7.3
out of 10
We drove the 2023 Cadillac XT6 on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
7/10
How does the XT6 drive? We tested the XT6 with its 3.6-liter V6 engine. At our test track, the XT6 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, which is sufficient for a vehicle of this size but a fair bit behind the segment leaders. Oddly, the all-wheel-drive system doesn't engage automatically, so you have to switch it on manually when you think you need it.
Other disappointing driving traits include torque steer — that's when the steering wheel pulls to one side when you mash the gas — if you don't engage AWD and tricky low-speed drivability because of an overly sensitive gas pedal. Also, the front chin spoiler, which helps with aerodynamics, scrapes on some driveways — a sign that you'll want to avoid off-roading.

Comfort
7.5/10
How comfortable is the XT6? The fairly comfortable front seats have effective heating and cooling functions but lack some adjustability. For example, lumbar support is only two-way adjustable, and there's no thigh cushion extension for those long of leg. The reclinable second-row captain's chairs are relatively comfy but nothing special. As for ride comfort, our test XT6 Sport did a good job of softening hard road impacts but didn't control well the residual up-and-down body motions that followed. This trait could be a problem for motion-sensitive rear passengers.
The automatic climate control system works well and responds immediately to your temperature demands, though the primary controls are split between physical buttons and the touchscreen, which is never really optimal. However, the cabin is pretty well insulated from sound. The XT6 isn't as quiet as an Audi Q7, but it's quieter than many luxury SUVs.

Interior
7.5/10
How’s the interior? Cadillac decided to add a rotary controller to complement its touchscreen interface at a time when most other automakers are getting rid of them. We applaud this decision, but some of the remaining touch-sensitive controls are still finicky to use.
Getting in and out of the XT6 is a breeze thanks to squared-off door openings and the low stepover height. Even crawling into the third row is pretty easy if you get the second-row captain's chairs. Once you're in, there's a pretty good amount of room in all rows. Visibility is good all around and is aided by low-mounted side mirrors and an optional surround-view parking camera system.

Technology
8/10
How’s the tech? The available Bose audio system has enough output to let you really bump up your tunes with decent sound clarity. Unlike some weaker competitor systems, this one sounds loud at even half the volume. The native navigation responds to natural language and is fairly easy to use. For those who prefer their smartphones, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and there is no shortage of charging options. (We counted six USBs plus a wireless phone charger in our test XT6.)
We generally like the XT6's driving aids. Adaptive cruise works well, but the lane keeping system is more of a prevention aid than an active centering aid. Don't bother getting the expensive night vision option because it doesn't work very well.

Storage
7/10
How’s the storage? Power flat-folding third-row seats are always nice to have, especially if they work quickly, as they do in the XT6. There are controls both at the cargo hatch and the rear passenger door, which is convenient. The cargo area's liftover height is a bit high, and storage behind the third-row seats, at 12.6 cubic feet, is below average. Max cargo capacity is a more appropriate-for-the-class 78.7 cubic feet.
Small-item storage in the cabin is also average. Others in the class offer more clever solutions. We had trouble finding space for sunglasses, for instance. And the upper tray under the armrest is a bit cumbersome to remove, especially if you have the USB cables plugged in. For family duty, the XT6 offers sufficient space in the second row to fit a large rear-facing car seat behind the driver.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10
How’s the fuel economy? The XT6 with the V6 and all-wheel drive, which is what we tested, gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg combined, which is about where most of the competition falls. We achieved an average of 22.6 mpg on our mixed-driving evaluation route, which is in line with our expectations and seems to indicate that the XT6 will match its window sticker targets.
Value
7/10
Is the XT6 a good value? The XT6 from a value standpoint is sadly less than the sum of its parts. The interior cabin materials are actually quite nice, but the execution of how those materials are put together is lacking. This cabin doesn't quite meet the level of sophistication of other competitors at this price, or even competitors that are thousands of dollars cheaper. Cadillac's MSRP seems too high for what you get here. Many competitors have more to offer, whether it's lower cost or better luxury.
Cadillac offers a better powertrain warranty than the Europeans, and its roadside assistance coverage is better than most other brands. It also offers one year of free scheduled maintenance, which is a plus.

Wildcard
7/10
We dig the XT6's styling overall and that it's instantly recognizable as a Cadillac. The interior design is also cohesive and works with the underlying design, but it doesn't feel as upscale as others, especially at this price. Where this XT6 mostly loses us is the driving experience. At times we thought to engage the all-wheel-drive system full time just to get rid of the torque-steer issue, but that would come at the cost of fuel efficiency. That probably detracts the most from the luxury experience.
2023 Cadillac XT6 trim level differences
The 2023 Cadillac XT6 is available in three trim levels: Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport. The Luxury trim comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (237 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque). All other XT6s get a 3.6-liter V6 (310 hp, 271 lb-ft). Both engines come with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on the Luxury and Premium Luxury, and all-wheel drive is an option. The Sport comes standard with a performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system. Feature highlights include:
Which XT6 trim does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend the Premium Luxury trim because it packs the more powerful V6 engine and a nice array of standard features, made better by the new standard equipment for 2023. Niceties like ventilated front seats, navigation and a power liftgate are all part of the package.

GREAT SUV!

2021 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
This truck is great. Super quiet, comfortable and roomy. I’m 6’3”, and have plenty of leg and head room. Second row easily fits bulky rear facing car seats without compromising front seat leg room. Door openings are huge and open all the way, so getting in and out is easy, and getting car seats in/out is easy. Seats are big and comfortable, the ride is very smooth, and very quiet. V6 … motor has plenty of power. Infotainment system is great. Modern, but simple to use. Similar to bmw idrive, but I find it easier to use. Wireless Apple CarPlay is awesome, and works flawlessly. We shopped x5, q7, gle, xc90, and mdx. Cadillac is the clear winner if you value comfort, and space. We originally were gonna get another bmw, an x5, but after driving the xt6, it was no contest. The cadillacs overall ride and the room won us over. Interior material quality is great too, I read a lot of car website reviews saying otherwise, but they are totally wrong. If you want a luxury suv that puts the most value on comfort, space, quietness, and a smooth ride- this is the suv to get. The v6 motor is great too, it’s very smooth and has plenty of power.
Surprisingly roadworthy performance

2022 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
Simpler design for Cadillac compared to others but well proportioned make this an elegant design overall and easy on the eyes. Driving dynamics exceeded my expectations for Cadillac. Feels more like BMW on the road. Does not feel or look plastic or cheap in anyway. Interior may not be top of class but well executed and hits all the marks for luxury SUV. V6 has plenty of power and quicker … than most in class. Power is smooth and seamless with 9 speed tranny. 0-60 in just over 6 seconds puts a smile on your face-Wow. This SUV deserves a second look in the premium luxury version. Auto critics way to harsh I think, because the design is simpler than what is usually expected from Cadillac. Once you drive it you'll think differently. This one is a winner. The blue with cirrus white interior is best of the bunch. Lots of tech and creature comforts Cadillac is known for-a big plus.

2022 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
I like the comfort and style of the interior. I have the premium luxury trim level. Great sound with the Bose 14 speaker system. I added the technoology package which has nice added features. The ride is smooth and i dont mind the manual adjustment from 2wd to AWD or sport mode. I like that the touch screen is built into the dash and not exposed like most vehicles today.
Very Impressive

2022 Cadillac XT6 Premium Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 9A)
Honestly, I don’t know who is reviewing the XT6 because it is a very nice vehicle! The exterior is truly stunning from all angles. Very pronounced masculine look, five star crash safety rating for every impact. Once inside it takes a very classic view of luxury, opulent without going overboard. Details a perfectly executed, similar to our old 7 series but better than an X5. If … you’re going to look at an ICE luxury SUV take this out for a drive. From my view it’s clear the reviewers didn’t actually take the XT6 out for a drive. The handling and maneuverability is awesome. I don’t like driving big vehicles but this drives like a crisp compact, it’s a joy to drive.
