Real electric range, highly refined

Steven, 02/12/2021
2021 BMW X5 xDrive45e 4dr SUV AWD (3.0L 6cyl Turbo gas/electric plug-in hybrid 8A)

The X5 45e is an outstanding compromise between the convenience, efficiency and joy of an everyday electric car and the traditional performance and range of a BMW inline 6. Pretty much all electric most days, and the integration of electric and gas is excellent - almost imperceptible when gas engine kicks in. BMW iDrive and driving assistant tech is excellent. Fit and finish outstanding. High voltage battery is big enough that this car earns same $7500 tax credit as full electric cars, making it an outstanding value over every other model X5.

Good Not Great

Updated: 2021 BMW X5 xDrive 45e I have had my X5 for about a month now, with 1200 miles of local and road trip experience. I am about 80% happy with it. I bought this to replace my wife’s 2011 Lexus RX350. I wanted something that was about the same size with a bit better performance, and a hybrid. Size: My first and lasting impression is that this is a big vehicle, despite being a “mid size” SUV. It feels big, parking with that long hood is a challenge (get the surround view cameras!!), demands a big parking space, turning radius is wide. It also sits up pretty high…I shouldn’t have gotten those 20 inch wheels to add to that. Getting in and out is a bit of a step (I’m 5’10”, so not short), and note you can’t avoid rubbing against the doorsill, even if you don’t get the running board. (Note you can lower the height manually, but it goes back up when you next drive.) And despite being 6 inches longer and 2 wider than my old Lexus, storage space is 20% less, and barely more than with my Infiniti QX50, a much smaller SUV. Specs don’t say it, but that battery seems to take up a lot of space vs the non-hybrid X5. Having said all that, it does have lots of passenger room, and storage is still good. Interior: Very plush. Certainly not the softest leather in the world…but I suppose it will wear well. Nice phone charger and lots of USB’s available. And buttons for direct access to the most used features….heat, radios, etc. Storage is ok, although it would be nice to have an official sun glass space, and the glove compartment door really cramps that space in there, so nothing wide will fit. But good seating space, and the contour seats I ordered are great, once you’ve figured out what all those seat buttons do. Electronics: Very extensive capabilities. I got the Premium pack, Driver’s Assistance, and Parking. But it is a challenge to learn them all….and I’m an engineering who likes this stuff. OK, when you learn it all, it is ok to operate and tells you what you need to know, and the displays are beautiful. But to get there, this is the first time I’ve had to really read the manual, and that in itself is a major challenge….very few diagrams and labels to work with, so I had to spend some time with the BMW expert at my dealer to get even the basics. While it is somewhat customizable, I still haven’t gotten it the way I prefer, and some things just aren’t available….like a Favorites list for my contacts. I have ended up doing a lot with the voice commands, which work pretty well. Gesture control is useless and I shut it off. Apple Car Play (fee?) and Android are included, but I don’t use them….bluetooth performance with my phone is fine. The driver’s display has several configurations, all of which have lots of information competing for your attention…..none of it is really bigger to stand out. Is that mileage number shown for gas, hybrid, combined????? What’s that symbol mean??? And the heads-up display is nice, unless you wear sunglasses in which case it is pretty invisible. Colors/Looks: I hope you like black! BMW apparently thinks you’ll like one of their fully four choices of black/dark gray. Ok, there are also 2 whiles, one blue, and one green. Huh. No silver?? Other than white, everything is quite dark, so dirt shows up. Otherwise, it looks “ok”, but probably could do with a refresh. Driving: OK, this is why you buy a BMW. This thing is a pleasure to drive, especially on the highway. It is powerful (even in the mountains), smooth (ok, bumps can be a bit jarring, but not bad), handles well (responsive, and no big swaying on turns), and very quiet. And all those safety packages work great! Yes, the lane keeping can be aggressive, so I’ve turned that off for local driving. MPG: This is my first EV and I have been delighted with it. I get about 40 miles on electric, so better than the 30 mile spec. That is enough for most of my daily driving, but in some weeks I go beyond that and have been hitting about 50 mpg combined. Local driving with no battery seems to be in the 15-18 mpg range. On my recent 500 mile road trip through the mountains, I got about 35 mpg combined. (I used the adaptive mode in combination with the nav system to ration out the batteries for maximum efficiency.) Charging: BMW supplies a mobile charger that works with 110V Level 1 charging and takes about 24 hours to fully charge the vehicle. Not adequate for an overnight charge at all. I had to install 240V in my garage for Level 2 charging that gets the job done in about 6 hours…ok, not the 3-5 the spec says, but fine for overnight. Conclusion: As I said, I’m about 80% happy with my X5. My biggest issue is that it is just bigger than I expected, especially when parking it. But it is plush and drives well, and the EV performance is excellent. Update: OK I have had my X5 for 9 months now and have completed a 3,000 mile road trip. The impressions listed above are all still about the same. I will reinforce that the highway driving is really excellent, with or without the battery power, and the driving aids are also very nice....really reduce stress on a long drive. Two disappointments to add. 1) The nav system is annoying. It is a task to load a destination address, especially if in a different town or state...voice doesn't work well for a long address for sure. And the system often doesn't find addresses that are newish construction....I frequently end up in Goggle Maps on my phone in that case. (OK I could be using Android Auto more, but I really don't like it for most things.) 2) The EV charge status is all over the place. On a good day I can charge it to indicate it has 40 miles stored, but other days it will top out at 25 or so. Temperature doesn't seem to be the issue, although its charging level when I plugged in the charger does seem to impact how much more it will add. And the miles indicated may or may not be what I actually get when I drive it, especially if the indication is well below 30 miles. BMW service had no explanation. I really like the hybrid functionality, but it needs some work yet.

2nd X5...won't be our last

We had a 2015 X5 x35i w/ M Sport Package and enjoyed it for all 106,000 miles that we put on it. Never had any trouble with it and it put a smile on my face every time I drove it. I'd planned to keep it for a very long time - and felt confident that we could have. The problem was that we went to the dealership and saw the '21 X5 and I was blown away by how much it's changed from the previous generation. This new X5 is unbelievable. In an act of unnecessary gluttony, we swapped our '15 X5 in there and then for the '21 and are very happy with the new one. The software/electronics are as good as it gets. The 40i engine we bought is a blast to drive. It's substantially more powerful than the 35i engine in the previous generation. It's more roomy, and in my opinion, I think it's a nice, subtle appearance (although I loved how the previous model looked, as well). Very happy with this car. I can add that in the 106k miles we put on the previous X5, the car never developed any rattles or shakes that we've experienced with age/miles in cars from other manufacturers. This car stayed rock-solid the entire time, and I'm not sensing any reason to believe the '21 will be any different.

3 weeks into ownership. We got off on the wrong foot due a poor dealer experience (BMW of Asheville). BMW employs "geniuses" to deliver the car and set up the very complicated infotainment system. Problem was our "genius" did really know the hybrid model that well and set up things incorrectly and give us lots of bad info. Overall love the ride and handling, so the car is great. The charger that comes with the car is junk. THE MAJOR FLAW. It takes forever to charge. The slow charging is because BMW chose a lower voltage onboard charger, apparently a holdover part from an earlier model. It really distracts from the plug-in possibilities of the car. With the included home charger and an empty battery it take 17+ hours to fully charge the battery for only 30 miles of range. Even on a Level 2 charger it takes 5+ hours, because it is limited to 16 amps (most as electric vehicles can take 48 or even 60 amps. Since most charging station cost by the minute, around me they cost $0.30 a minute. So a full charge would cost over $90 or about $3.00 per mile. Also since the X5 45e can only handle 16amps, don't spend a fortune buying the faster, higher amp chargers. Nothing will make it charge faster. On electric only, it has surprisingly good pick up for such a heavy vehicle. My wife is able to go to work and back on only electric power. The switch between electric and gas is smooth .. truthfully I don't even notice. On delivery had only 1 non-set up related issue. The rear sensors don't work and it is currently scheduled for service.

2021 BMW X5 Quality Review

I like the responsiveness and quick acceleration of the in-line 6 Cylinder Twin Turbo. This is a fun SUV to drive with a lot of horsepower (You know you’re in a BMW). It handles well for an SUV with very little trouble in the turns. The technology is great but takes a little time to learn - Checkered Flag BMW in Virginia Beach, VA. has "BMW Genius" personnel on staff to assist you with getting to know your vehicle, even after the sale. I would highly recommend the Heads-Up Display (HUD) System, All Wheel Drive, Paint Protect, Windshield, Tire Protection and Upgraded Leather Interior Package's. This is a great vehicle and a lot of fun to drive! I would recommend the Hybrid model to anyone looking for fuel economy as this vehicle likes/requires premium fuel only and can really burn fuel if you’re not easy on the gas pedal. I average about 16 to 18 miles per gallon combined city & highway driving (But I like the speed and performance so I’m willing to give up some fuel economy). On a long highway trip if your easy with it, you can average 28 – 30 MPG.

This vehicle is amazing. Combining luxury and sport. The flexibility of being able to switch from all-electric, to all-gasoline, to hybrid -- provides ultimate confidence and reliability. The switch between each of the preceding modes is extremely and remarkably seamless. All-electric for driving in the city. Hybrid mode to reach the 50mpg on longer trips. All-gasoline to get that classic feel along with an extended range. Excellent vehicle. A bit pricy after adding the options, but is priced competitively among peer luxury PHEVs in its class.

We purchased a BMW X5 M50i on December 24, 2020 and to is March 15, 2021 and this car has been is the dealer for more than 4 times for electronic issues. BMW is not cooperating with us and kept on asking for more time to fix that lemon. They refused to give us our money back. We now have to get an attorney to get BMW to listen to us. This is really POOR customer service!!!!

The BMW X5 M50 provides a level of high performance that having traded a C7 Corvette also a fantastic it fits what I call a best all year around high performance car regardless of weather conditions with the standard all season tires The M brakes stop at a fantastic rate . The acceleration is there wet or in extreme cold . I ess tired of only perfect warm weather to be driving a Automobile that gives it’s all regardless of road conditions. The BMW X5M50i has almost 10 inches of road clearance so mild off-road is ok and easy . Yet the handling is very good and the steering feel superb . The interior can’t be beat . Top quality with multiple ways to get what you want . Use either voice command, iDrive spin knob, touch or a direct button to get various things to turn on . Seat comfort didn’t get better. After driving many cars and Corvettes the BMW fulfills your wants and commands. It simply never complains nor say it can’t go there . Best All Around Transportation you can put yourself in and safety transport your family and friends in too.

I purchased this BMW new in 12/2020; it's 3/2021 and I've already had three repairs. One is a common known defect - the window regulator. My passenger side front window regulator failed the first week I had the car. BMW finally switched out one from my (new) loaner because there was a months long wait for a factory part. Then about a month later, I got a tire pressure monitor failure warning. Took the car in to be repaired. Two days ago, got the warning again (Different wheel? No idea.). I have fewer than 2,500 miles on this car, and three repairs already. Wish I had stuck with my original choice of Mercedes GLE.

Breathtaking balance of power and grace, but in the first 30 days the electronics had an issue that requires a dealer appointment & loaner. Vehicle producers need to remember they have higher reliability standards than FANG companies and should consider scaling back features to enhance the reliability of what they do include.

Have had a 550, 3hybrid, 650, 2019 X5 and now 2021 X5. My current x5 is my favorite of them all. Just a really well balanced driving car. The engine and drive train are great. Perfect amount of power and just unbelievably seamless transmission. The Infotainment system needs only minor practice, the hot keys are great, and the touch screen is super intuitive. Just love everything about the car. Highly adjustable with noticable differences in how the car acts based on settings. Liked the mercedes interior a bit better overall, but this car just beats that GLE 53 AMG by a hair overall to me, I Leased a 2019 x5 and loved it. Ended up buying a 2021 coming out of that lease. Never thought I would buy a car that I had just been in for three years via a lease, but liked this car THAT much. Considered the GLE AMG 53, and it was tempting. But the computer chip "market adjustment" completely ruled it out (they were asking more than sticker for their cars). And still just gave the x5 the slight edge anyway. Its been a great. Would strongly recommend to anyone. Lots of room, perfectly balanced performance, perfect amount of tech. Blew the audi Q7 and Q8 away. only real competitor is the MB.

Absolutely love my new BMW X5! I went from a Kia Telluride to the X5. Yes, the X5 is smaller but so worth it. Just love the way it drives. It just feels safe, heavy, well made car from the first time I drove it. The only complain I have is due to the Chip shortage from Covid. It doesn't have the wireless charger, Harman Karden stereo that it should have with the packages it has. I am bad about hoping around every couple years buying a new car. After this I don't think I will go back to anything other than BMW.

Coming from a Tesla, I thought I was “settling” for a hybrid, as I am averse to pumping gas. I have been pleasantly impressed with every aspect of this vehicle. The main reason for five stars: I purchased this car and drove it home from another state last Thursday going 75 the whole way. I arrived home with a half tank (but averaged 32 mpg.. not bad for a 2200 kg beast) The EV mode is better than I imagined it to be and one charge is more than adequate to get me back and forth to work and do any grocery shopping without using a DROP of gas. From the adjustable hydraulic ride height to the massaging seats.. the build quality is near perfection. Oh, and after all the driving, including a 0-60 @4.8 second launch, I still have 144 miles fuel remaining. Par excellence! Bravo BMW!

Swaying while driving

We purchased a 2021 X5 x40i M performance package in September 2020. There is intermediate swaying while driving. Does not sway all the time. We have taken it to the dealership numerous times. They say the oversize wheels that are on the M performance package will sway on certain roads. I have two issues with this answer. A vehicle of this caliber should not have issues with road conditions. Secondly I drive the same route numerous times and it does not sway in the same spots if it was the road. Sometimes it does not even sway. This is my wife’s daily driver and she does not feel safe. We have been in contact with the dealership and Bmw North America. The only conclusion they have come up with is to switch out the tires and put smaller 19 inch tires. We have issues with the swap because we paid extra for the performance package to have the look that he has. The other issue is it is a lease and we will be penalized for returning a vehicle with improper will wheels. I would like to see if there are any other people with the same package having the same issues.

I love the 2021 BMW X5! I went from a confortable Chevrolet Suburban to the X5. Yes, the X5 is smaller, but it's worth it. I just love the way it drives, it feels safe, heavy, well done from the first time I drove it, a beautiful design, I think the best front, back, the sides and interior. The only complaint I have is the shortage of chips because of the world situation they have created, and I do not like on this model did not bring the option to deactivate the star / stop bottom. For the rest, the almost perfect car.

Car is less that 9000 miles - lost power on a bridge and I was forced to pull over in a dangerous situation. It had to be towed due to a fault in the drive train and all we have been told is two of the 8 batteries left the factory faulty. BMW cannot figure out the issue 4 days later and I will never buy a BMW again.

I'm in my honeymoon period with the X5 4.5e but we've already driven it 1800 miles! Luxury Seating Pkg is fabulous and I never imagined how great it would be to have massaging seats!! It made our 1400 Mile drive so easy! We rarely even felt fatigued! And having 37 miles of "free driving" every morning with the batteries feels like I'm cheating! My first tank of gas (after getting home) got 44 mpg! My husband has a Tesla but I prefer the flexibility of this HYBRID. Since we already had his wall charger, we bought a simple converter piece (Lectron-Tesla to J1722) so we can both use his wall charger-no electrician needed! Loving the park assist 360° cameras too.

Great Vehicle But Has Major Flaw

After less than 7 months of ownership I noticed the cabin of the vehicle would begin to smell of vinegar. It was apparent that the odor was coming from the A/C vents. As time passed the problem got worse. The stench can become overwhelming. The issue got so bad that at times I would feel ill as a result of these fumes. My wife brought our 2021 BMW X5 to the dealership to address this issue. They explained that it is a mold issue and that they would make the necessary repairs. The vehicle is under the manufacturer's warranty yet my wife was presented with a bill for services. She explained that we have a warranty and they refused to cover said repairs. They also failed to provide us an estimate in advance for said repairs. If they were going to do non-warranty work on the vehicle I would have expected a written estimate in advance of said repair. Do your research, this is an ongoing issue with multiple models and there is a possible class action lawsuit in the works if not already underway.

Love everything about the car but after 15 months we are getting rid of it because the Sensatec fake leather seats are like sitting on a board. Horribly uncomfortable for any ride over 90 minutes. Unbearable.

For the first four months of owning this car, I primarily commuted to work 5 miles each way with only a few highway trips and got approximately 150 mpg. In four months, I used 2/3 of the tank. I finally got worried about the gas going stale and purposefully used the ICE. The switch to the ICE is seamless and power and handling IMO are faultless. It doesn't drive like a heavy SUV. My only complaint is the loss of cargo space from the battery pack. Interior is comfortable for a family of four and a dog. Love this car and highly recommend.

This car is the perfect car if your daily commute is around 25/30 miles. And it is still a real Bmw, great design, impeccable comfort, fun to drive and with impressive technology included

NOT the Ultimate Driving Machine

First time BMW owner. Owned the car for 8 months, but just sold it. For the price point of the vehicle, the interior materials feel cheap. The Sensatrac interior felt more like vinyl instead of imitation leather. It was hot even with the A/C on. After several months a creaking/tapping sound was prevalent when driving. Dealer fixed it by lubricating door seals, the fix did not last long. Android Auto would constantly drop off, so you need to disconnect and reconnect the phone. Dealer said that it was a common issue with no fix. Road noise is terrible inside the vehicle, unlike other luxury cars I have ridden in. The air suspension would not stay on the level the driver sets it on. Vehicle has a noticeable sound when it transfers from Electrical to Hybrid mode. Now the positive, it is a fun car to drive under Sport mode and I was able to get approximately 650-825 miles per tank when using electric and Hybrid mode. Sport mode, expect to fill up the gas tak at around 350 miles.

The BMW X5 is an amazing vehicle with many great features. It drives as smooth as a sedan and it will even massage your back while you drive. You don't have to take your hands of the wheel or your eyes of the road to set up your navigation, just tell it where you want to go. The finishes are beautifully done.

Best SUV I’ve owned, I’ve had many like Range Rover and Levante. One bad thing, the manufacturer had miss badged the car as an XDrive all wheel drive. It’s not. It’s a rear wheel drive and they won’t correct their mistake. It handles great.

The X5 is a pleasure to drive

The X5 is a pleasure to drive, especially on the highway. It is powerful (take it to the mountains where it shines), handles very well, and is very quiet especially with new 21" Perrelli tires. The sound system (Exec package) with gesture control is awesome. We do regular maintenance and have no issue. One recall was addressed in a timely manner by the dealer. My only dislike is the tailgate button location. It is easy to accidentally hit when loading cargo. Would recommend if you are looking for quality and performance over economy.

Just bought this car from BMW of Monrovia and so far I love this car. I have a 535i M Sport and the X5 rides smoother and handles just as well. Does not feel like I’m driving an SUV.

In eco mode i get about 28mpg. In sport it performs perfectly. X drive system is flawless, infotainment system is very easy to use. Struggles to tow, stereo is crummy, BMW service is a c+ at best.
