Love the smooth power from the straight 6

Not sure if any where people are coming up with the low reviews or even if they actually own an X5. We’ve had ours two months and it’s a comfortable, smooth, powerful, engaging vehicle to drive. I commute about 25 miles each way and we took it on a 1500 mile round trip to pick my daughter up from school and have been very satisfied. I’m a tech guy and love all the gadgets in this car and have had no issues with CarPlay or any of the electronics so far. I was debating the M50i version and am sure I would have loved the V8 on the occasional times I would have stomped on it. Honestly the straight 6 with a 0-60 time around 5 seconds is still very satisfying for a vehicle this size and was much more affordable from an initial price and ongoing gas mileage standpoint. I’ve been averaging about 22mpg in mixed driving and saw 25 mpg on our long trip. This is our second BMW X vehicle and we wouldn’t hesitate to buy another one in the future.

Almost perfect mid-size SUV

I previously wrote how I went from a Mercedes SUV to a BMW X-5. This is a long term update of my BMW X-5. When I sit in the drivers seat, I sit in what arguably is the best and most comfortable seat I have ever been. I also sit in a cabin that is driver oriented and designed for drivers. I thoroughly enjoy driving it, so much so that when my wife was wanting a new vehicle I knew she should get a BMW not only for all of the quality but for the ride, BMW’s drive like no other brand. Back to the BMW X-5, I have been in the fully decked out Telluride, Mercedes GLE, etc and while all car companies can add bells and whistles the final question is how do they ride, handle and feel driving. The same answer comes to me every time, they don’t feel like a drivers vehicle. Given the opportunity to purchase again I would absolutely purchase the X-5 again!

Obsessed with my new X5!

New X5 redesign makes this luxury SUV opulent and a fun to drive masterpiece! This is my third consecutive X5, and fourth X5 overall...this time I bought not leased! The interior is everything I could ask for. The engine is responsive, fun, smooth but yet fierce! I bought the M sport 2020 with 22 inch tires and Harmon Kardon sound system. All other safety options I need/want come standard! I pray I can keep this car for the next decade vs the three year lease dance I’ve been playing for a while!! I love this car, embodies the “ultimate driving machine“ motto!!!

Only a little over 4,000 miles and the right wheel was making a very loud sound. Took it to the dealership and my vehicle had bad bar-rings. Also, the entire dashboard technology system went out. All of the functions disappeared, the heads up stopped working, the driver assistance (PDC) was non-functional, and there was absolutely NO volume! They said they fixed it but it was missing many more technology features. This is our 3rd X5 (2010, 2017, and now 2020). I really regret purchasing this very expensive vehicle!

I've had the M50i for a couple months now and so pleased with this purchase. Been an audi buyer for a long time however this combo of power, interior and tech won me over. The 4.4L twin-turbo is comfortable for around town driving and then when you open it up....wow! The cabin is really well done and nice touches like the LED moon roof and crystal controls make it feel special. Some good deals out there....this one is worth a strong look. Highly recommend.

Best Ride I Ever Had

I recently purchased a new BMW X5. The search was challenging as I dealt with five dealerships. In the end I got the color and interior I wanted. I took advantage of the current rebate. Although the car was very expensive everyone (friends & family) told me it would be worth it. IT WAS! I have been driving more than 50 years. Never have I experienced driving like my new X5! It is outstanding.

What a wonderful driving SUV! Traded in my 2019 x3, which was my baby, so that I could experience BMW at its finest. This beautiful piece of machinery will wrap your senses in LUXURY. Talk about rewarding yourself! The tech is a little more comprehensive from all our previous BMWs but in time should be just fine. It pretty much includes everything you want to know and things you don’t. The beast can be a little intimidating at first drive. From an x3 to this is quite a leap now. It might feel a little larger than life because the whole driving experience is elevated literally and figuratively. The 20” wheels are stunning and recognizable BMW, and the new ARCTIC GRAY a perfect unique choice. This standard of excellence is worth every penny. Don’t be intimidated by the price. Do your due diligence and you can score a great price. We bought a service loaner with 3000 mi. for $10,000. (!) under MSRP.

A magnificent design & engineering feat

I have the XDrive40i as I need all-wheel drive in the mountain winter. This car handles like a sedan, is astonishingly quiet, has brilliant power (even in my 4 liter version), has brilliant safety & driver assist features, and is a complete joy. A few thoughts for potential buyers: I regret not getting the Harmon Kardon audio system; the standard Bose is disappointing. I strongly recommend Driver's Assistance Pro Package & Luxury Seating Package (especially for long trips). To me, these are must-have. The first makes me a much safer drive on long trips. The second adds hours to the time each day I can comfortably spend behind the wheel. I also have Off-road package (because I travel on lots of rough roads getting to trailheads) & Convenience Package (wireless charging!), and Parking Assistance Package (3D view is pretty great). These are all nice to have, but not as indispensable as the first two.

Got the 2020 X5 M50i and love it. This is my 87th vehicle that I've owned (I know, it's my weakness) and if not my favorite, it's a close 2nd. It is so fun pulling up beside a Mustang GT (which I've also owned) and saying "I'll run you for titles" and watch the look on their faces as to why would a guy in an SUV say something like that?! So far only one taker....he lost but I let him keep his GT! The only drawback is the technology is complicated to use.

Great car but with critical flaws

This car is a great highway cruiser – quiet and stable – especially w/ the air suspension and acoustic windows. Love the car but 3 major flaws: 1) Wireless CarPay sucks! The wireless connection is finicky. We have 4 iphone users in the household who use this car but the X5 only connects w/ 2 of the iphones. The other 2 iphones would only connect on initial device setup, but doesn’t recognize the iphone on subsequent uses. We never have issues w/ our WIRED carplay setup – wish BMW would have a wired option similar to Audi. 2) Lack of rear leg room – for the size of the car, there very little rear legroom. Competitors seem to have 2x as much space for the same exterior length. This makes it challenging as a family transport 3) Quirky BMW over engineered technology. In addition to the wireless carplay issue, there are a host of random quirks, e.g. you can open the tailgate w/ the driver’s door button and keyfob, but you can’t close it, the mobile apps rarely works, etc. I also hope this one will be reliable as we plan to keep it long term.

Had my 2020 x5 x40i for 3 months, been Pacific BMW 3 times to reprogram wifi and cell phone communication. After the 3rd visit they fixed it, now it's out again, I will not fix it again, I realize the x5 technology is very faulty, so I'll just drive it like an old car. Unfortunately I bought it instead of leasing so I'm stuck. I traded in a 2018 audi Q5 with excellent technology, one of my biggest regrets

Pros: First look is very eye catching. My x5 40i is generally nice. Engine is sized correctly for class of vehicle. LED headlights and tail lights are nice. Back up camera is panoramic with nice grid lines for guidance. Harmon Kardon sound system sounds great with plenty of equalizer adjustment. Interior leather is nice. Stiching detail gives a nice visual treatment. Seats are comfortable. I'm 6' 200lbs and am comfortable in both front and back seats. Nice interior lights. Especially like the dash light effects. Cons: Manufacturer needs to work on quality control. I have an appointment with my dealer to take care of minor sqeaks, rattles from tailgate area.. Some door weatherstripping is detaching. The turn signal lever is very stiff. I prefer a smoother movement to the arm.. Cruise control is very clunky. Poor steering wheel layout and not very responsive to incremental adjustments. It has a tab to raise mph by one mile increments or 5 mph increments. Very difficult to successfully raise by one mph. Usually will go up by 5 mph even on a gentle toggle No spare tire included. Overall, BMW engineers made a impressive ride. Pros outweigh the Cons. Would recommend a look.

Get one before gas engines are gone!

Update August 2022: The X5 is 1.5 years old now, and not only has it been an amazing vehicle, but it also has not had anything go wrong whatsoever. We take it to our cabin most spring and summer weekends which is a 1 mile rustic, bumpy and twisty road down to the ocean and its not any worse for it. That engine is everything I thought it was going to be and more - such smooth power delivery, and the confidence that the vehicle will do what you want it to, which is great when merging onto busy onramps etc. The AC is excellent in the hot summer, and even with all seasons, the AWD system drives like the road is dry. Anything I don't like or would change: it would be nice if the rear seat reclined, and would appreciate more choices for ambient lighting colors. Lastly, the start/stop disable button is right above the engine power button so I am in the habit of turning it off everytime I start the car, it would be nice to disable it permanently. Original review:Finally writing a review on our 2020 BMW X5 40i, with various options including air suspension, laser high-beams, soft close doors, and extended leather. Finished in Arctic Grey, it is the best looking SUV (I know thats subjective). We tried out the Audi Q7/Q8 (engine rated the same power but felt noticeably less powerful), Mercedes GLE (the 4 cylinder engine, while adequate, is unacceptable. When I commented on how the engine was so revved for normal driving, the salesman repositioned it as the engine is making use of the full RPM range. No, its just way to tiny of an engine). The interior of the X5 has a very modern, updated BMW familiar look, with a slight bit art deco to it. While I slightly prefer the Audi interior aesthetics, the BMW storage, physical buttons and comfort reign supreme. The vehicle is currently just under a year old, and has no no issues or problems. But here is the big news: the main reason we got this car is the engine: it is sublime. So smooth, powerful, connected, responsive. And the sound! Absolutely love it - it is one of the best gas engines ever made, and before everyone switches to electric, we knew we had to get one and don't regret it for a second. Trying to be fully informative here, want to list any negatives: there is a learning curve to the tech but you will catch on, the brakes could have a bit more feel to them, the second row is slightly less legroom then we wanted, and I wish the instrument cluster had the option to configure to circular dials (I am old fashioned like that), to mimic the traditional BMW look. If you are considering a vehicle in this class, you will not regret your purchase.

Recently leased a new BMW X5. Beware!! the stereo is beyond sub par. Sound is tinny, lacks clarity, forget turning up the volume. It sounds like an old AM transistor radio. I am amazed that the Company installed an audiophile's nightmare in such an expensive product. Actually thinking of dumping the car over this.

Expected Better from a $70,000 Prestige Vehicle

Vehicle required remote software update with approx 2,000 miles. Update resulted in total vehicle shutdown requiring it be dragged out of garage and hauled approx 80 miles to dealer. Vehicle out of service for 3 days waiting to have system reset. Dealer priority??? Remote for gate only programmed after several months of multiple attempts. Worked for a short time when within 2 ft of gate then quit. Works on garage opener. Spend extended time on phone with BMW to program to no avail. Followed reprogramming instructions in owners manual, how to videos, on line instructions, and homelink instructions. None work. Poor response to tailgate toe activation. Over responsive with lane keep. Backup lights provide extremely poor illumination in the dark. Better keep a flashlight handy. Owners manual is overly complicated and hard to understand. Lacks clarity for operation of complicated technology. Increased disappointment in purchase with every use. Miss my Mercedes.

Before you purchase/lease this vehicle, beware that its tires DO NOT LAST. I've had 2017 model and gentle low mileage city driving was enough for 3 of them to be replaced within 15K miles. At end of lease - 30K miles, I was charged for yet another two. Given the price, it's a huge flaw to vehicle and it alone should tell you it shouldn't be bought...

The Good - really solid and stable drive, turbo really enables good acceleration for a vehicle that size, decent interior The Bad - toe kick for the lift gate just does not work. BMW might want to license the technology from a Ford Escape :) The Ugly - Bluetooth just sucks for a $70k priced SUV. It work sometimes, sometimes it take a day off or just calls in sick. Bluetooth has been around for a couple decades and they still can't get it right.

I have been shopping for a 2020 X5 for several weeks now, to great disappointment. The vehicle itself is great....drives GREAT, lot's of features, good entertainment system and easy to use, excellent safety features, comfortable, quite. All excellent. Now the BUT. Of the 10 color choices, 3 are barely different blacks, 2 are VERY dark grays, and 2 are barely different whites, and the rest are pretty ugly imo. And the interiors are either black, white or some pretty odd alternatives. No silver exterior, not light gray interior.... Note silver is by far the most popular color for luxury vehicles, according to KBB, and in the top 2 for all vehicles (after white). BMW, what are you thinking!!! Mercedes or Audi, here I come.

I don't own an X5. I just checked one out while car shopping. $80,000 for a loaded luxury SUV and the back seat does not recline. Really??? You feel like you are sitting up against the wall because the seat back is so upright and can't recline.. like SUV's that cost less than half this vehicle do. Not only that, the seat bottom is hard and flat, reminding me of the seat you would get in the rear of a cheap Toyota RAV4. It's a luxury vehicle. The front seats are super comfortable and have a zillion adjustments. But rear passengers are treated like the forgotten step children. No excuse. If you routinely have rear passengers, I would take this into into account. Right after, I sat in the rear of a Grand Cherokee costing half of what an X5 does, but the rear seat is 10X more comfortable!

The car handles great! The acceleration of the vehicle is what sold me. The drive is comfortable, not too firm but you can still feel the road. Not Lexus/Mercedes level comfortable. You still feel the bumps but it won't jolt you out of your seat type. The technology of the car is impressive, even if you don't get the executive package.

I have zero complaints. The nfc key card is a nice option along with so many others. If people are leaving bad reviews I doubt you forked out the 70k to buy one

Love the added 523hp with this model and the overall power and sound from the engine is amazing! The power is complemented by the many luxurious packages and add-ons e.g., Bowers and Wilkins, heated and massaging seats and the laser lights! All that comes at a cost though as gas can run up a bill - overall its worth it! So go for it!

Fantastic SUV/sav

I've owned our X5 since 2020 and it's a beautiful SAV, great handling, fast, gets good gas mileage, I highly recommend it. I was going to get the V8 but you really don't need it, it's an SUV the V6 works great, just fast enough to beat most SUV's on the road, on the highway it's well composed, quiet, excellent passing speed, the transmission works flawlessly. My only complaint is the back seat, I wish it could recline, but that's only available on the third row option.

Great SUV _If Not the Greatest

This is my second X5 and it is by far one of the best CAR/SUV I have ever driven. Benz, Lexus, Audi and Nissan make some of the best performance vehicles out there, but they do not come close to BWM. I am a forever fan.

Glitches and problems

My 2014 X6 was approaching 150,000 miles and felt it was time to move on. I personally loved my X6 but quantity since Covid isn't there at my price point. I decided to purchase a 2020 X5 (one owner lease) because it looked sporty and had lots of cargo room. It began glitching with things like automatic door lock randomly not working along with tailgate and then the screen going blank. My car was saying a software update was needed but my dealership said it couldn't do that because the software was not capable of receiving it yet? They claimed it may be due to apple car play or blue tooth so I removed them and tried again. Still glitchy. Said they would need to force feed the update in the service department. Still glitchy. Now check engine light throwing code for ventilation air flow to engine. Oh, and did I mention key fob will only really work when I hold the key. I can't have it in my belt bag like I did with my old X6 because it doesn't respond or at least doesn't respond half of the time. This whole experience has been incredibly frustrating and time consuming. I hate this car and wish I never purchased it. I have a lemon.

Get Driver Assist Package!

Wayne Hamilton, 05/23/2024

I’ve had my 2020 M50 with 46k miles for about 2 weeks now including a 6 hr road trip. Driver assist package is a game changer for heavy traffic and/or road trips. Vehicle basically drives itself when driver assist is engaged….steers, controls speed and distance from traffic, and even changes lanes when you put on turn signal. Works well in heavy rain…at night…80 plus mph or stop and go traffic. Performance and handling is very impressive. Gas mileage is quite bad as expected…about 16mpg

I like the X5 40i better than my trade-in 750i

My 2016 750i had a smoother ride...miss that & wish I ordered air suspension for the X5...and a bigger engine...barely miss that because the X5's base engine is plenty powerful. Surprisingly, the X5 handles better than the 750i sedan, esp. around corners! The seat's phenomenally comfortable and the Harmon Kardon sounds far better in the X5 space than in the 750i's smaller interior. Loving it!

Great car, the worst sound system

Mitch, 12/13/2022

Looking back to even a 1998 Volvo, 2006 BMW 525XI, 2013 ACURA MDX, nothing is even half as bad as the sound system in this car. It's not even 1/10th the quality of an Acura MDX from 2013. Pretty sad and won't ever be buying BMW again in the future due to it. Clearly cutting corners and terrible.
