BMW X5 35d
Outstanding torque and mileage. After 18,000 miles, the average mpg is 28.4. We have averaged 80 mph for 600 miles at over 31 mpg. No repairs, just yearly fluid changes. Very comfortable, quiet and a great all around vehicle. After 31,000 miles no issues and average mileage almost 29. We really enjoy the diesel performance and mileage over the gas equivalent. Too bad they have gone away in the US. With the diesel X5 no longer available we switched to a 2021 X5 plug-in hybrid. It did not compare well to the diesel and we traded it for another brand after six months. The extra weight of the battery and the soft ride did not feel like the ultimate driving machine. Maybe we should have tried one of the gas only powered ones.

Reliable, safe, high MPG, flawless.
This is our 2nd X5 35d. Both have been trouble free. Mileage is much better than projected. Will have to choose other brand now that BMW has dropped diesels.

More than you expect
Previously had a ML350 bluetec. The ride, handling and performance are superior on all counts. And that is not even counting better MPG. The only three area's that I find the X5 short in are backseat room, specifically legroom, slightly smaller cargo area and confusing and lacking equipment packages. My thought is that a number of options on the X5 for a luxury SUV could and should be standard. I cannot express the significant difference in handling and engine performance vs the ML 350. If you are not familiar with diesel you will be hard pressed to notice the difference against a typical gasoline engine. Certainly X5 owners with a gasoline model will notice the difference, but it is important to express that the diesel is not lacking by any means. Price aside it is a good value for the money and you will not be disappointed. Going on 8 months now and couldn't be happier.

Still loving it after 127,000 miles
I am a diesel guy. I have owned many diesel vehicles and decided to drive the X5-35d for fun...my wife and I were hooked from the moment we accelerated off the dealers lot. We have owned this vehicle now for 7 months and are getting 33 MPG average driving in the mountains of Colorado and I do not drive conservatively:) We love the handling, the safety features, and there are so many little engineered surprises in this vehicle. Our warranty is now over. We have not had any issues other than the sunroof needed to be repaired and it may have been our fault. We plan to keep this vehicle for a long time, at least 200,000 miles...unless it proves to become expensive to keep going. March 15, 2022--We are now over 90,000 miles and still loving it. Have not had any issues and still going with original brakes. Had to replace the brakes on front and rear at 96,000; pretty good for mountain driving, especially the way I drive! No other issues whatsoever. March 16, 2024, Happy to report no issues whatsoever at 127,000 miles.

Love this car
I bought this car, used, fresh off a lease, fully loaded, at a fraction of the cost. I absolutely love how comfortable this thing is - the multicontour seats with ventilation are a must in these SE TX summers. I love the ease of use of the technology and the heads up display with the directions right in front of you is a.maz.ing. Makes long road trips effortless! The gas mileage with a diesel has been phenomenal - I’ve only filled up 4 times since I picked it up in Dec20 (it’s Apr21 now) and I drive this thing everywhere. Can’t say enough good things about it!!! UPDATE: I don’t know if there’s a single thing I would change. I have 53k miles and haven’t had a single problem.

Overall Review
I purchased this vehicle from Carmax. This is both a beautiful and economical road trip vehicle with all the amenities I wanted and then some. I took the vehicle to the dealer for recall work and had to change the serpentine belt and rear brakes. So I would strongly recommend to have the vehicle immediately checked out by a BMW dealer to ensure it is fine. Excellent on long rides, especially economical with fuel, but the run flat tires are pretty rough. I can drive from Northern California to Southern California (one way) easily on 1 full tank with plenty of fuel to spare. Also I would recommend a extended warranty.

Can’t believe it is a diesel
Have been very happy with ride/comfort/options. Overall quickness and agility is impressive. Sport mode is quite fun. Only complaint is the ‘door sill’ that sticks out and gets in the way when exiting/entering vehicle.
Great date; long term commitment?
My second X5d and there is so much to like, particularly the performance/handling, the driving position, interior trim that is smart but not cushy and technology to name a few. Getting a hitch installed was a major hassle both times, and in fact I moved the equipment from one to the next on my dime. Regrettably experienced a failed fuel pump on my 2018 that apparently imploded and resulted in a major repair. Fortunately under warranty! Love the vehicle but just don't know if it is to be trusted over the long-haul.

If you like to spend time at the mechanic
Worst decision I’ve ever made was purchasing a used X5 diesel, two months in and my experience has been the worst ever with a vehicle, in two months the vehicle has cost me 4K dollars in attempted repairs and is now sitting at a dealership with major engine and drivetrain malfunctions. Do yourself a favor don’t buy a used BMW!

Diesel diesel diesel
Go Diesel, it’s by far the best engine in the class and with the right selection of packaging you’ll be very happy with it!!!! Premium seating is a must! $3,100 extra, but it’s worth every penny, I made the mistake of not getting it and totally regret it ever since.

Overpriced and poorly designed features
I've owned over 50 cars in my life. This was my first BMW and likely my last. It replaced a Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit, and for a lot more money, provided fewer features and lower build quality. The diesel powertrain is remarkable, however. Unfortunately, the powertrain, which is my vehicle's saving grace, has been discontinued. My problems include an adaptive cruise control system that does not work well and cannot be disabled and run in manual mode (unlike the Jeep), squeaks and rattles that two separate dealers have been unable to resolve, lack of compatibility with Android Auto (unlike the Jeep), automatic climate control that apparently has only a manual fan function, and other miscellaneous annoyances. Also, you would think a vehicle that claims to be the "ultimate driving machine" would not be quite so ponderous on the road, even in Sport mode. Not impressed.

Best Cars we've ever owned
The 2018 X5 35D I purchased was a demo as we didn't know BMW made the misguided decision to drop the diesel option. We ordered the previous two X5 35D's and were able to load up on all the options but unfortunately we could only find a stripped down model with 1200 miles by the time we realized BMW made the bone headed move to drop the diesel. We're going to drive this one into the ground for sure. The fuel milage and range on these are absolutely incredible with all kinds of torque as well! They still have the diesel option in Europe and the last I knew the European X5 M Series Super-SUV is a diesel model. Too bad we can't import one of those here to The US!
