Best Vehicle I've Owned
I've always had American made cars and got my first BMW in 2014, a CPO 2011 335d which I loved. Having been truck guy and and small SUV guy going into the 335d was a big change but worth the change for several years. Lately, I started missing something to tow a boat and as the kids have grown needed a bit more leg room in the back. My wife recently bought an X2 and loves it. It got me thinking about getting back into an SUV again. The X2 is great but not quite big enough and missing the true luxury feel I have become accustomed too, it's more sporty and fun. I looked at the 2018 540i and the 2019 X5. The 540i was beautiful but a little more car than I needed. The X5 is also nice but again, it was just too much. The X5 certainly rides different than the 540i and my 335d. I've never like the X3's until I discovered the revamped it in 2018. I began to do more research and saw the M40i version and positive after positive reviews from both professionals and owners. I decided to give it a drive after considering leaving BMW for Audi,, Lexus and even a Ford Explorer. It took about 2 minutes of the test drive to become hooked on this SUV and the next day I decided to buy one. This thing is fantastic, great MPG even considering the power under the hood, its comfortable and rides almost like the 540i but not as tank like as the X5. It's perfect! Job well done to BMW. Having driven several loaners from years 2012-2016 I was not impressed with the overall quality from BMW "ultimate driving machine" even from my 2011 335d which was a true sport feel. But the engineers must have taken a hint and decided to get back to their BMW roots and have created a fantastic machine in the 2018-2019 X3. If you are in the market for a luxury SUV/Crossover just stop looking and go get one of these awesome vehicles. I can honestly say this is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Update March 2019. After having driven the vehicle for 6 months I’m still in love but I have noticed two design issues. One is the road noise is pretty significant. I’m assuming the aluminum body and run flat tires are mostly to blame but I do find it annoying on certain highways. My biggest complaint is the poorly designed ventilation system. Being in the northern US the cab does not get warm unless you have the fan on the higher side of the settings. Even so the temperature regulation is poor. The car will get very warm for no reason and then cool down. It cools down enough condensation forms on windows. I have brought it into the dealer for this issue and was told it is just a bad design and no actual mechanical issue. Other than those two things I love the ride, the look, the power and the vehicle overall.

BMW revives the Ultimate Driving Machine
I've owned several recent BMWs -- '08 335xi, '11 M3, '12 328xi, '15 428xi convertible. I've seen first-hand the transition that BMW has made away from the core principles that brought them success -- steering feel, responsive engines, and quality materials -- in an attempt to modernize and gain more market share. I'm very happy to say that the '19 BMW X3 m40i returns to its roots with a truly thrilling automobile. The steering feel is heavier, and more responsive than any BMW in the last 10 years, and it doesn't feel over-boosted or fake. The engine is amazingly quick and versatile (0-60 in just 4.6 secs), changing on the fly with a flick of the driving experience switch from Eco Pro, to Comfort, to Sport, and then Sport Plus. The exhaust note (along with great crackles and pops) is awesome in Sport/Sport Plus modes, but can be dialed back to "civil" in Comfort or Eco Pro. But after 5 minutes of feeling like you're driving an M3/M4, you remember, "wait, this is an SUV -- and I can pick up the kids from a soccer match, or grab tons of supplies from Home Depot without a problem." The versatility is fantastic. The Vernasca leather interior with contrasting stitching is top-notch, and even the dashboard is stitched to make the interior look and feel much more expensive. The Driver-Assistance packages are a must-have in today's world of distracted drivers. The full "Dynamic Digital Instrument Cluster" included in the Executive Package is gorgeous, and BMW's implementation is much more refined than Audi's Virtual Cockpit, IMO. The gesture controls and simulated 360 degree camera views border on gimmicks, but they are fun to show others and do come in handy at times. All in all, BMW has exceeded expectations with the X3 m40i, and I now consider this the best BMW that I've ever owned -- it's pretty much all of the things that you'd want in a sports car wrapped into an SUV. What a win!

Oh Yes
I have been fortunate to own some nice performance cars in my life...GT Mustang, Jaguar XKE, Porsche 930, Triumph GT6 and some other decent runners. But, overall, with all things considered, performance, fuel economy, insurance cost, interior room, handling and appearance, I would have to say my 2018 BMW X3 M40i is one of the top two. It's great. I get decent mpg around town, about 22-23 and nearly 30 on longer highway trips. It is comfortable and so far, except for,one small rattle, absolutely no problems. Try the rest buy this one.

Best car over all we have ever owned.
Only two caveats. One is gas mileage. We did not have high expectations and we’re not surprised that we got only 25 miles per gallon on a round trip trip to Colorado from Irvine California. On the same trip in our 2016 BMW 435I we got 32 miles per gallon. The lower mileage with the M40i is of course due to the fact that it has a more powerful engine, is much heavier, and is all wheel drive. The other caveat is that it came with tires that I consider to be substandard for that vehicle. If you’re driving is primarily urban/suburban, I think the M40i is overkill, and that the 30i would be a better choice.

Drives like a sports car, but benefits of SUV
Traded my 2018 Audi S4 in for this a few weeks ago. I needed more space, higher clearance (I live in DC and roads are awful), and a relatively smaller SUV for city. At the same time, I did not want to sacrifice performance. And the M40i certainly delivers all of that! It is an incredible mix of fun and practicality.

60 days of ownership - car so unreliable
2 days after delivery new car had software failures resulting in 9 days in the shop, two weeks later car is back in the shop for a faulty tire, resulting in a replacement tire, took 7 days.. Tonight while driving on the highway (snow storm to top it off) the drive train failed and car broke down on the highway.. car has 1,100 miles!

You get what you pay for - thankfully!
This is a very expensive vehicle, but it appears to be alone in its class. Quality of finish, materials, thoughtfulness of design, sheer performance, and great handling all complement the stylish exterior. While test driving a bunch of SUVs and wagons, decided to try BMW in the hopes of being treated better than we were a decade ago. Drove to Topeka Kansas dealership, after a brief email exchange, they had pre-staged three cars, an X3 M40i, an X3 xdrive 4 cylinder and a VW Golf R. We started in the 40i, and only test drove the others out of a sense of duty! Manager suggested we take a break for lunch, take any one of the cars with us, and come back when we were ready. WOW -- they obviously believe their car sells itself, and they are right. We bought the car we test drove - equipped almost like we had special ordered it. Unbelievable acceleration, very good handling for a 2 ton SUV, wonderful interior appointment and finish, more knobs and buttons than we know what to do with. In fact, BMW offers an Encore - bring your new BMW back to the dealership and they assign a BMW associate to go over all of the features of the car, at a time of your convenience. Our encore took nearly 3 hours, and included a tour of the service area, the parts desk, and answering all of our questions about the x3. Stumped our encore associate, and BMWUSA who she rang up on her tablet, only when we asked how to repeat play a music track - they could not figure that one out! Fabulous, but expensive, vehicle, great customer service - highly recommend this car, and Topeka BMW-VW.

never again BMW
I made the big mistake of leasing a brand new BMW x3. The software is a disaster. The car randomly performs electronic functions. After 10 days in the shop, the advisor called to relay a question from BMW: do I have any emojis in my contacts. Really? Well first of all, who knows? But second of all, that is what you are pinning these problems on? Totally pathetic. They had to reboot everything several times and then i finally got the car back and guess what? At 14K the radiator flaps failed! what ever that is. The car does drive well, but I hate the herky jerky shut down and start up at stop lights. Have to press that button every time I get in. Car feels like a task master of buttons to push and dials to turn. The ventilation stinks. It needs constant adjustment. The auto function does not work properly. The bottom line is that I will never buy another BMW and I am trying to get them to take the car back.

Nice car. Poor steering. Terrible tires.
Run flat tires are horrible. Loud. Bumpy. Replace them with Pilot Super Sport non run flats and it like you have a new, and vastly improved, vehicle. Electric steering has no feel and is nowhere near as precise as a good hydraulic system. Interior is great. Power is great. Overall build quality is very good. Update after 8 months of driving. Love the interior. Seats are amazing. Ride sucks. Loud. Bumpy. Rough. Probably a result of the run-flats. I may replace them before they wear out just to get a decent ride. Every BMW I have had since 2007, except an M235i convertible, has had the run-flats, and usually I replace them right away, but this time I thought I would try to at least get some use out of them. Bad decision. They are horrible. Only saving grace is my wife loves the power and the interior.
Take it to the track or grocery store
This crossover is incredibly fast 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. It is so much fun to drive. You have to keep telling yourself this is a small SUV. Fit and finish are to German standards. So far everything is working wonderfully at 6,000 miles. Seats are very comfortable with numerous settings. Mileage is around 23 mpg but that is mostly around town. Premium fuel is required but pretty much any vehicle in this performance class would require it.

First 10k miles on our ‘19 BMW X3 M40i
We tend to keep most of our cars well over 100k miles. This one should be no different. We purchased this vehicle to both downsize and upscale from a Toyota we had owned for 12 years. This BMW is my fourth, and has largely not disappointed. Very fast, amazingly agile for an SUV, and appointed with amazing technology. High points are class-leading acceleration, great visibility, useful tech for situational awareness, spacious back seat for two(three is pushing it). Low points are gas mileage (22mpg overall on premium gas) and stiff ride(but this is the high performance sport version). Only issue we’ve had was rattling rear exhaust pipe cover. I recommend it with the understated metallic gray exterior with cognac leather interior: stunning.

That engine though....
Traded in an ‘18 Q5 Prestige for a used ‘19 X3 M40i. The Audi was our first experience with a boosted 4cylinder, and while it had plenty of power, it had some odd lag (either due to turbo or transmission, or maybe both). Worse was the sound. The Q5 overall was a fine car, with new tech and neat dash, but it just didn’t excite. And the more we lived with the “new” one, the more we realized how much we liked our previous 2010 Q5 (but not all the repair costs). Test drove the SQ5, V60, XC90 and others to find something better, but nothing seemed like a great replacement. Started looking at ‘18 and ‘19 executive trim x3 m40is and realized they were now in my price range - 45-50k. And then I drove one. Since my own car is a ‘15 435i, the tech in the x3 was comfortable and updated. But the selling point was the engine and transmission compared to the Q5 (and even the sq5). The power is very linear and always there when you need it. The car was just as quiet and comfortable as the Q5, and in my mind the tech in the x3 was better (not the dash, but the hud and infotainment I’ve better (user preference though). And the car just looks better. Different enough from the last model to be new (unlike the Q5 where our cargo mat from the previous one still fit perfectly). Within a week of my first test drive, I found one with the interior and exterior that my wife likes and made the switch! A few quibbles: there’s an odd, low pitched hum with the ac that changes with engine rpm - seems to be somewhat common and maybe “normal” according to forums. It also seems a bit “floaty”, without a good on-center feel on the highway at speed, but that could be due to the all season tires I bought to replace the run flats that were on it (so I will take the hit for that - but they do increase the overall ride comfort, which to me is at least as good as the Q5, if not better). Last is the downshifting under braking... I noticed this on another new bmw when I took my car in for service, and the same is true on the x3. It makes a nice, smooth linear stop more difficult, but feels great when braking while driving more “spirited”. My car is a manual, so I don’t know how long this downshifting has been present on bmws. There’s also the ASS - but I can’t decide if it is worse or better than the q5’s. I haven’t noticed it too much, so it can’t be awful. Oh yeah, it’s kinda loud for her when it starts up. I have to agree with her on that. In the end, though, the b58 engine sold it for me. My wife is still getting used to the switch (she has been in Audi’s for 15 years now so the technology is an adjustment), but she says she likes the wireless CarPlay a lot. She also likes the interior much better (oyster versus black in Q5). If you can make the jump to this engine, go for it!

Great engine and exhaust sounds, ride is crap.
I leased this vehicle, the engine is superb the exhaust burps and farts in sport mode, killer sound. The interior and fit and trim are excellent, all-in-all a typical sweet bimmer, except for ride quality, (I've owned 3 M vehicles, (3)X-5Ms all had a stiffer suspension), however this thing even with adjustable suspension will beat you up, it would benefit greatly from air suspension. I'm very disappointed.

There’s a Tiger in my Garage (BMW X3 M 40i)
I still get excited to drive this Beautiful Tiger. He’s a Gorgeous animal to look at….Wow….turn it on….crack, pop, back it out of the garage, and it’s purring….just waiting and ready to go….then Wow!…what an amazing experience to drive this beast. I loved it the minute I test drove it, and I still love it exactly the same today. I take it around town mostly….take grandkids places….yes, this old granny loves a great car…short trips…..this car is great…but the ride is not a comfort luxury feel for long trips, but it sure is fun for what I need. So far it’s needed an electronic reset and a new battery. I’m hoping for a few more fun years in this Tiger! UPDATE: I will have it a year this month. I still love it. The service light came in last month. Needed a adjustment in a “flap” and the windshield wipers replaced….still runs great…gas mileage is good…perfect car for me. My hubby loves driving it…

I prefer this over the new X5
I resisted the new X5 to get this and I don't regret it. It's a well-designed small SUV with just enough room. In the first few weeks, I had wood in the back, a bathroom vanity, a countertop and quite a few other long items that would never have fit in the M235i convertible I gave up to get this. If you need practicality but don't want to settle on performance, this is it. It is faster than my M235i convertible, which was no slouch. The interior is great. Get the digital dash and executive package if you're going to get this. You won't regret it.

I have both the S30i (wife drives) and M40i (mine)
The normal engine gets you nice power, and it is fuel efficient and quiet. My wife has the "luxury line" with all the options and she loves it. As for me, the M40i is exactly what it is supposed to be- an urban bully in sheeps clothing. I have the 21 inch rims, and if you love to drive, this is a great vehicle. Yes, road noise, road feel, etc- bring it on, I love that- and the engine is just bliss. The thing is all the rocket you need. No need for the M in the X3, the M40 is plenty. UPDATE: After 2.5 years, we are buying BOTH out of the leases. Best BMW's we've ever had. Period.

It's great but.........
I took delivery of my special ordered 2019 x3 40i this past April and now have about 3500 miles on the clock. While I have not had any problems at all there are some things that need to be said. The sport exhaust needs to go. I'm not a 20 something trying to impress my friends by being loud and obnoxious. Sport brakes bring a big break dust problem and that's not very sporty. Head up display is something I could easily do without and resent having to pay for it. The final insult is the giant hole above me called a panoramic sunroof. This monstrosity is just waiting to rattle or leak some time in the future. Now be aware that most of my complaints are because these items are part of the "package" that you must buy in order to get the m40i motor. On the upside this car runs and drives so beautifully I try to ignore my gripes and 21.4 mpg around town is very good given the available power.
