2019 BMW 530e issues

This is an overall great car; fun to drive and at a luxury level that most people will find appealing. The car delivers on gas performance. Over the 800 miles I’ve owned the car, half city and half highway, it’s averaging about 45 mpge. Interior build quality is excellent. I’ve had a minor issue with the truck latch not engaging. It’s at the dealer having a new latch assembly put in. That’s a little disappointing. But the biggest disappointment, no , major complaint, and it’s a big one, is the squealing from the brakes. It’s not a minor low level noise; it’s fingernails on the chalk board level. The dealership says BMWs are know for this. I say, BS. No other car on the market routinely puts out a car that has squeaking brakes. It’s been back to the dealership twice. Hopefully, it will be resolved, but to those of you thinking about buying a 530, beware, trust me, it’s something you can’t live with. It’s that bad. 2/20/2019 update: Update from my original 12/23/18 posting. The brake issue has been resolved. The dealer attempted to chamfer the brakes on one occasion and then cleaned and lubricated them on another, both with no improvement. It took making a video of the noise generated by the squealing brakes but the dealer finally agreed to replace them, probably after contacting corporate. The new brake pads and rotors are functioning, as expected, noiselessly and flawlessly, just how they should be. Thank you BMW corporate! August 2019 update: I have owned the car for 9+ months and have 7300 miles on it. My initial impressions, after resolution of the brake issue have been exceeded. The car is supremely comfortable to drive, exceptionally quiet, especially on electric mode, and incredibly efficient as far as gas consumption. I must admit, it is not only fun and engaging to drive but a joy to own. August 2020 update: I have owned the car for almost 2 full years. It has performed flawlessly. Not a hiccup. Average combined gas/electric range has consistently been 50+ mpg. My commute is a combination of half rural and half highway driving. Nothing in the car has needed service and the ride remains impeccably quiet; no rattles, loose items, just a solid feel that conveys a serene sense of comfort and reliance. A good buy. August 2021 update: Going into my third year of ownership and I can report that there have been absolutely zero issues to report. The only thing I’ve done is an oil change and a four wheel alignment. The ride quality has remained supremely comfortable and quiet. I just hit 22,000 miles, not a huge number considering the car was purchased in the fall of 2017.

Fast, smooth, roomy, understated and possessing a proper option list for a car of this class. After a year with the 540i I can say my deepest satisfaction driving this car is on the open road or loaded with family. Its powerful engine provides nearly silent thrust on demand, and its stable suspension and predictable steering effectively mask what is a big heavy car. You want nimble, buy a 3-series. You want opulence, get a 7. This 5 occupies a spot where sedan utility is dressed in its most luxurious form, exuding confidence, strength and capability. The tech is amazing; my phone connects easily, the car reads messages to me and I speak my response; the seats and lighting are wonderfully customizable and the driving aids have varying levels of sensitivity or can be turned off completely. I chose the M Sport package because I do attack twisty roads from time to time, which the car does without complaint. Again, it's no 3 series but it is more than willing to chase one down a mountain road. On the freeway It is stately and quiet, eating up miles like a baleen whale swimming through a field of krill. I chose the options for soft-close automatic doors and massaging seats, which adds another layer of icing to this excellent cake. What don't I like? The automatic headlights don't come on in foggy daylight conditions. The trunk can't be closed from inside the car. Options are expensive. What is priceless? Driving friends home after an evening out and having no one eager to leave the car when we arrive at their door. Update January 20 2020: The trunk can be closed from inside the car by lifting (and holding) the switch with the engine running. I added the M Performance Sound and Power Kit, resulting in a marked increase in giddyap and a sufficiently throaty exhaust note at startup and idle. Nearly 20K on the car and there have been only two issues: a recurring passenger restraint alert and a repeated warning of low tire pressure. Both were addressed and resolved by the dealer. I also asked for and received a software update to the media system and CarPlay, which enhanced the connection with my phone. This remains an athletic, comfortable and luxurious big sedan that I would buy again. Update July 2020: Still love the car. I drive in standard Sport mode most of the time. Perhaps due to supply issues in our new COVID world, BMW has reduced the set of options available at this time for the car. If you are ordering one, load it up. Update January 2021: Replaced my third run-flat tire due to road hazards. They aren't cheap, the space the spare tire takes up in the trunk is unacceptable. No major issues. I remain a fan of this car.

Very happy to own this car, upgraded from 2010 528i, can’t stop taking it out for driving, very luxurious interior, nice touch screen, a bit confused with touch screen controls with Apple CarPlay mixed-in at beginning (not able to make a one-push call from steering column call button, but must use touch screen to make a call?), seats are very comfortable giving plenty of support to back, very slight body roll, soft and quiet ride, steering is direct and precise, acceleration is fast, transmission is buttery smooth, gas mileage is good for such a big car, mixed driving city and hwy at 25mpg, would like to have more storage space at door panel, overall, very pleased to own this car. Still in love affair with this 5er after more than a year.

After 5 months...

I almost skipped this edition (G30) of the 5-series, because I wasn't thrilled with the conservative design. After 5 months of driving this, I'm blown away..the ride quality with the 540i is just...perfect, especially compared to the bulky previous generation (F10). The build quality is spot-on, the ergonomics are ideal, and the design aesthetic actually emerges more over time. Bravo, BMW.

Seat tearing at bolster.

The seat coming apart at the bolster and BMW will not replace. I’m still under warranty and have 29,000 miles on this car. The service manager at Sandy Sansing BMW in Pensacola Florida told me that I’m sitting in my seat wrong and entering and exiting my car wrong. My salesperson is saying that it the seat and should be replaced. I’ve had two BMW 5 series vehicles and this didn’t happen in my last car. I won’t do business with BMW again unless they fix my seat. Be aware that your seat may rip and ask your salesperson to demonstrate the proper way to get in and out of your car. My salesperson never did that for me nor is it in the owners manual.

The 530e xdrive is an exceptional car....it looks great, and drives very well. It does take awhile to learn the rather overly complex technology, and some features, like apple play, remain quirky. The car is very quiet and comfortable, and very luxuriously appointed. Besides the somewhat finicky technology, the battery life is disappointingly short. While it might be possible to achieve 20 miles of pure electric driving if you are going downhill all the way, its more typical to see 12-15 miles of real world driving before the battery charge runs out and you go back to hybrid driving. Given the 2-3 hour charging time, thats not very generous. If you are a hard core BMW driver who just wants a lot of power and great handling, this may be the right choice. After all, this is a mid size luxury sedan, not a sports vehicle. maybe the M version would be a better choice. Dealer support has been superb, especially with the four year maintenance package. And, as BMW drivers aren’t very excited about a green car, this sedan sells for a very competitive price at about two years. Well worth considering if you would like a mid size green luxury car that is great fun to drive, and achieves very nice mileage. UPDATE: My 530i is a joy…its beautiful, handles incredibly well, has almost every feature imaginable, and it just plain fun to drive anywhere. It can take awhile to learn the technology of the car, which is pretty complex. Lots of stuff is not intuitive….but, once you get used to endless bells and whistles, the car is simply superb!! The distance on battery only could be a bit longer…I have the xdrive, and its hard to get more than 12-15 miles before the ICE kicks in…but, even with the limited battery range, my mileage is around 40 mpg ongoing. That is really amazing for such a beautiful machine.

A Gentle Beast

Ordered a 2019 M550i and received it the week before Christmas 2018. I had never even test drove one, but was trading in a 2013 535i, which I adored. I did not think I could go wrong. I was right. I am in love. From the very moment I drove off the dealership lot I knew it was something special. I call it the gentle beast because it is so powerful and yet so smooth and controlled/refined. When it starts it makes a beautiful and powerful engine note. As you drive it there is a muted engine rumble that sounds so great, yet it is not invasive. It never interferes with music or conversation. It's coming up on 2 months of ownership and I have absolutely nothing to complain about. One other thing about the M550i when compared to similar offerings from Audi or Mercedes...BMW offers you all the interior colors (and exterior) that let you really customize what you want. The other 2 German makers limit your interior colors and trims. The interiors they offer are very very sport- oriented The inside of the M550i is plush and luxurious looking AND feeling. The 20 way power seats........heavenly. So many people have commented on the comfort of the seats. I could go on and on. If you're in the market, I suggest giving it a look. Gentle Beast. Bayerische Motoren Werke...... oh yeah.

It is an overall awesome car - probably the best car I have owned/driven in the past 30 plus years. Just rated in a Lexus ES300 and purchased the 530e and have about 900 miles on it. The Mediterranean Blue Metallic color is impressive- almost peacock blue; and very well matched with a cognac leather interior. The car drives superb - it accelerates and corners extremely well. And so far has given about 45 mpg in combined driving (after charging every night). The headlights and wipers are perfect - the headlights turn in the direction of the steering, and the automatic wipers are quite sensitive. I cannot be happier with this car - great handling, comfortable ride and very responsive and smart technology. Great value for the money, in my opinion.

41/2 Stars 530E needs Better Battery Millage

The Car drives great and is Very comfortable, Love the heads-up display and the very accessible and user-friendly design inside the car. I added chrome to the fins and trunk which richens its look. The electric drive battery should be longer, I get 13 miles (all electric) on a charge, which is good for local driving...25-30 miles or more would be ideal and better for 1 way travel to work, where I could recharge at work for full return without having to use gas. That would make everyday work week ideal. Overall, the car runs great, and I have no problems with it!

My BMW 540i is a safety beast! I wanted and got every safety feature that BMW currently has available. I got the Sandstone Blue which is gorgeous. It is so easy to use the instruments. If the front seats are all the way back (you must be over 6'2") the back seat passenger has enough room not to feel cramped. When the seats are more reasonable, it is luxorous. I just feel Safe. I had to get out of a situation and without putting it in Sport mode, I excellerated out of the traffic cluster. The price is NOT the best, but for my safety and my families, how can you put a price on either.

Decided to go hybrid to get significantly better gas mileage. Assumed I would be sacrificing power and driving pleasure. I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of torque, lots of comfort and features. Easy to lose track of speed in highway. Have been 40+ miles per gallon. UPDATE: Went from 535ix to 530xe. I was nervous about going from a 6 to a 4 cyl engine.. I was pleasantly surprised and the assist you get from the electrical motor makes you completely forget about the difference in HP. The 40+ miles per gallon for my usage habit is also a pleasant surprise. This is my 4th BMW and there will be a 5th; when I am done with this one I will be looking for another BMW Plug in Hybrid (X5-50e).

I sold my beloved 2011 Lexus LS460 with sports package and bought a leased return 2019 530 Sports Line, and I’m loving it. With the tank filled up, trip computer showed 808 miles range. It wasn’t lying! I drove to OC CA and back to Las Vegas and still had 1/4 tank of gas left, good for 144 miles, according to the trip computer. The Lexus was like a beautiful yatch, and the bummer felt like a racing boat. It’s only a few inches shorter, but fells so much more nimble and sportier. The twin turbo four is optimum engine choice for this class of car, especially with today’s gas price. I could have got the 530e, but come on, twin turbo and hybrid from BMW? It’s a disaster waiting to happen! 😅

Buyers beware! I purchased a pre-owned 2019 530e series and at first I was happy with it. This all came to an end when I started to have issues with what I keep saying is the transmission. This is not my first rodeo having a vehicle with Transmission issues so I know what to look out for and how the drive feels. When I say I have reported the ongoing issue with my car jerking and feeling like it’s about to shut off while driving more than 10 x’s it’s the amount of times I have proof of. However, all the times I’ve taken it in to the BMW service department, I was first told that there weren’t any codes so they couldn’t identify any issues. Then the times they’ve tried to fix it, the issue seems to get worse. I paid $45K for a lemon. By now I’m over owning a BMW and want BMW to take ownership and replace or buy back my car. If it weren’t for the warranty covering all the band aid repairs, I’d probably be bankrupt by now. Please do not buy a hybrid as my experience has been everything but good.

Microsoft Outlook is not supported in the USA. This is an issue for me as I do a lot of work from the car. It is supported in Europe so, I can only assume that BMW didn't want to pay a licensing fee to Microsoft for the USA. Silly me, I thought southern CA was a big market for BMW. I am also very disappointed in the "preconditioning" of the climate controls. They tell you that you can set the climate controls from your cellphone app but, you must have some power available in the hybrid battery or have the car plugged in. Turns out that you must have at least 30% power available. The car can only go about 13 miles of electric drive on a full charge so, how much power should I have left after my 40 mile commute? Yep, maybe a few percent if I am lucky. But wait, I can set the car for "Battery Control", a feature that will hold a percentage of electric power in reserve. The problem with that is that it cannot be set as a default, I have to set the Battery Control to hold back 30+ percent of hybrid power every time I get into the car. Not exactly convenient. in addition, I am giving up about a third of my electric power for air conditioning or heating the car instead of it helping me save fuel. This is really not well thought out. I'm now getting malfunction codes so, it's back to the dealer next week. I'm also feeling a shudder when the car transitions to gas from electric. I had a Ford fusion that handled that aspect of the drive so much better. And BTW, I get 34mpg in my daily, 80 mile round trip commute (in traffic). This is with a full charge of electrons every morning. Did I mention Turbo Lag? How do you have Turbo Lag with an electric motor supplementing the drive train? I've now had this thing 24 months and 41,000 miles, I really don't like or trust this car. It's in the shop for the second time in 3 weeks. The dash cluster went out a few weeks ago, now there are wiring harness and waste gate issues. I'm getting out before my warranty expires.

First, let me say I loved my 2016 550i - it had every M upgrade available. The only drawback was a bit severe ride. However, the handling, power, etc were exceptional. The car was a little heavy for its size, but luxurious and fun all at the same time. I've only had the 2019 M550i xDrive for 600+ miles. During that time I don't think I've had it out of Sport Plus driving mode more than 50 miles. It is more responsive, better handling and feels faster by a goodly amount! The AWD is simply amazing. Point it in any direction - forward, around curves, corners whatever and it tracks like its on RAILS! Huge calipers stop it just as well as the twin turbos propel it forward. A perfect car! My only complaint - offset by the new Massage feature - is that the seats have gotten a bit 'stiff'. The 2016 felt more 'plush' but it didn't have both cooling and heating.

I purchased my 2019 540I in June. The power and handling is amazing. I had a 2017 Mercedes E 300 which only barely had adequate power. The ride is very comfortable. I have had issues with the back up camera. It works about 75% of the time. The dealer cannot find anything wrong with it. Even after I showed them a video of it not working. There is a message on the dashboard that says Emergency call system malfunction. This blocks out all other information from being displayed including the odometer. The dealer said this is a battery that is back ordered in Germany. They have no idea how long it will take until they will get it. I am trading this car in by the end of the year. I will probably get another Mercedes with a bigger engine.

I drove a 530i for 17 years and the 2019 530e doesn't measure up. The battery drains rapidly in town, is better on the freeway. It takes 5 - 8 hours to charge. Noisy when accelerating. Side mirrors block view. Prettiest car out there (Cashmere Silver Metallic color). I'm trading it in as soon as I can. At first opportunity I traded it in.

Hotrendous hybrid start/stop shudder

Yes the 2020 hybrid will have a $5800 federal tax rebate but that is insufficient to endure the 4 cylinder engine shudder everytime it transitions. The rest of the car is typical BMW. Buy a Volvo hybrid which has imperceptable transitions. Avoid the 530e until BMW gets it right.

I purchased my vehicle with 25,000 miles. It is such a beautiful car and far exceeded my expectations. It has a quiet and yet powerful ride. My only complaint is the basic stereo. It sounds fair at best which is so disproportionate to all the other aspects of the car. I would buy it again.

Terrible Tires

We leased this car new and have had a terrible time with the tires. 4 flat tires in 4 years! At $400 each, this car just isn't work the money or the hassle. All BMW's now have run flat tires which can't be patched so we plan to switch to another luxury brand as soon as we can get out of our lease.

I like the ride, the power, the comfort for an all day drive. I don’t like the cost to own once the warranty runs out. And I don’t like that the digital part of the drivers display (Speedo and tach) is having issues and I’m having to pay.

Seat adjustments much less comforting than expected. Bach aches 18 days in. Fuel economy not particularly good.
