2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
Purchased this TRD sport in Blazing Blue Pearl in August of 2016. Highway driving I get over 24 mpg at 55-60 mph. Around this small town I am getting 19, which is much better than my 2015 Tacoma with the 4.0 V6. The truck is less comfortable and a little quieter. I have owned several Tacoma's and this one seems to have been rushed into production. The navigation works well as do all … the apps. I am very disappointed with this truck. The transmission never knows what gear it wants to be in and going up the slightest incline will cause the transmission to downshift two to three times. I have been told that Toyota fashioned it this way to improve gas mileage but the improved gas mileage doesn't make up for the way it drives. They should have stuck with the old 5 speed which was impressive but I think they rushed this one through. For the cost of the vehicle I would think twice.

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
I purchased this vehicle to replace a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport that had a 6 speed manual trans. The Tacoma was purchased with a 6 speed manual transmission for more control for driving on the beaches in Delaware to surf fish. The vehicle with only 500 miles on the odometer is getting 21 mpg. The performance, ride, handling, quality.....everything is outstanding. I guess the big plus … is that I purchased a 6 speed manual transmission, and not an automatic which many reviews complain about shifting and being sluggish. Not so with the 6 speed manual. My recommendation is buy with the manual transmission. Toyota is on the cutting edge for safety and technology. The Tacoma comes with the Qi Wireless charging pad built into the tray area in front of the floor shifter. I have a iPhone 6, so I bought a Benzalel Latitude Qi Wireless Charger Case for my iPhone 6. It works perfectly....wireless charging. If you have a Samsung you should be able to wireless charge your phone in the Tacoma without having to buy a special case. I have no issue with the seating height of the front seats being 6'1". My wife who is 5'4" loves the passenger seat height. I did get the factory Toyota Predator Running Boards installed at the dealership so that my wife could get in easier. The higher height of the truck makes for driving on the beach and crossing sand dune entry points very easy. Zoom, Zoom.
One year later, I still love my ‘17 Tacoma Sport TRD 4x4. Love the 6 speed manual transmission. Love the ride and handling. The extent of my off reading is riding the beaches of Delaware Surf Fishing. Now have 9000K on my vehicle.
Update.....December 11, 2019
My ‘17 Tacoma Sport TRD 4x4 is now 2 1/2 plus years old, and has 21,000 miles. I still love the truck. Some minor issues have been addressed and corrected under warranty. I still highly recommend the Tacoma, and still love having the 6 Speed Manual Transmission.
Terrible Taco

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
The 2017 Tacoma is Very, very, uncomfortable getting in and out of vehicle if your 6ft tall. The steering wheel cannot be adjusted to allow you to get in or out comfortably. Head room needs to be at least a couple inches taller. The muffler is loud and noisy inside the vehicle. Acceleration from a stop is sub-standard; the six speed transmission at times will cause you to accelerate … fast, other times not catch-stall then over accelerate. On the freeway with just slight hills the transmission does not know what gear it wants to be in, constantly surging and slowing. Gas mileage has gotten better with age/mileage. New I was averaging 13, now with 28000 miles on it, I average 18. I wish engine had a little more power and towing capacity were better, maybe 7000 to 7500.
Good mid size truck with too many flaws

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4dr Double Cab 5.0 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
I just got rid of my 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport crew cab I owned it for nearly three and a half years I absolutely loved it in the beginning but hated it the last year-and-a-half. My main gripes with the vehicle is there's no low-end torque when you have to merge or step on the gas the adaptive learning transmission just bogs down and there's literally no power which is definitely a … safety concern of mine because if you have to merge or go through an intersection that low end torque is virtually nonexistent. To mitigate this I have to put the truck in the first gear and step on the gas to get any kind of out of a hole punch. The dealer reflashed the transmission three times which didn't fix it. Toyota was focused more on MPGs than actual truck features and trucks need torque even mid-sized ones. The constant upshifting and downshifting going up hills was getting ridiculous the transmission is the biggest issue with this truck. If they just made it a regular 5-speed transmission to this engine it be a whole new ballgame. The other issue I had with this truck the paint is very thin and the interior plastic scratch very easy. For the pros to me it was comfortable I'm not a big guy I'm only 5 8 average build once you get up to speed it definitely has good passing ability and acceleration, it was comfortable to me it was great off-road I use mine for a lot of surf fishing never got stuck went through the snow with ease. It was very reliable put 57,000 miles on it with no mechanical issues or breakdowns. I did tow a Toyota Camry with a car dolly it did tow it very well but it was a straight stretch of road 400 miles but if there was Hills I would probably have a different opinion. It did many trips to Home Depot it hauled my fishing gear and I used it like a truck and it did not miss a Beat. Overall the truck is fantastic off road with mediocre on-road abilities due to transmission and gearing. For the price of the truck this is unacceptable. I'm glad that Tacoma does hold its value so I didn't lose anything on trading in the truck. Toyota is very reliable but I can tell you right now I would never own another one just do the transmission and gearing in this truck

Which Tacoma does Edmunds recommend?
We bought a TRD Off-Road V6 4x4 for our long-term test, and we'd do it again. With strong go-anywhere credentials thanks to its all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential and crawl control, it doesn't break the bank like the admittedly impressive TRD Pro. The cab comes equipped with the 7-inch Entune touchscreen navigation system, and a single comprehensive option package can add a tilt-and-slide moonroof, heated seats, automatic climate control, rear parking sonar, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Available in the full range of bed, cab and transmission choices, too.

Driving
3.5The Tacoma steers and handles with quiet confidence on the road, but the V6 engine and its automatic transmission don't always respond quickly to inputs. All Tacoma 4x4s benefit from Toyota's off-road design emphasis, but the TRD Off-Road is particularly capable when the pavement ends.
Comfort
3.5This new Tacoma rides smoother and quieter than the one it replaces. The climate control system is refreshingly simple and effective. The seats are accommodating, but the high floor tends to make tall drivers wish for more adjustability.
Interior
4.0Attractive interior is nicely laid out, with easily understood and effective controls. The cabin has plenty of space up front, but tall folks may disagree. Biggest shortcomings are the relatively tall step up to the cab and an odd driving posture, both side effects of the need for ground clearance.
Utility
4.0The Tacoma's composite bed has lots of smart cargo management features, and there's a decent amount of places for items in and around the cab. Its tow rating isn't quite class-leading, but it isn't far off the mark. Child seat fitment in the crew cab favors forward-facing seats and boosters.
Technology
3.5We generally like the touchscreen audio system because it has large virtual buttons and employs knobs for volume and tuning chores. Supports smartphones with a proprietary Entune app instead of the more universal Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lags behind Honda Ridgeline in advanced driver aids.
