I purchased this car from private owner at tax time for $900. Previous owner had already replaced the water pump before I got it, but had had no problems with the car other than that. (the key to it is DO NOT drive the car while it is overheating, that's why most people had problems with the Quad 4 motor) Since I have owned it, I have put a starter on it ($85 from auto zone lifetime warranty), tune up with air filter(less than $20), Front brake pads ($20), replaced all the speakers to match after market Pioneer XM/CD deck ($75 from Walmart for Rockford Fosgate) Car is not perfect BUT it gets from point A to point B quickly, with good handling, and get 32 MPG doing it.

This year grand am had problems with the head gasket. Didn't find out until 162000 miles lucky i guess. No repair facility will touch the dohc quad 4 engine. All in all if yours is still running GET RID OF IT.

I am a GM fan. I purchased this car with 95,000 well maintained miles. On the positive, engine started every time in sub-zero weather. Otherwise, I never owned a car that has cost me so much in repairs. I have replaced, A/C compressor due to bad clutch, but now evaporator leaks. Steering rack blew a seal, intake maniford gasket replaced, heater core replaced, 2 motor mounts replaced, exhaust system, power window motor and recently, replacement of belt tensioner of which pulley froze. All these repairs within 15,000 miles and a year and a half. I've owned many GM vehicles and expect maintainence repairs, but will never buy or recommend another Grand Am.

I bought my grandam at the same time my mom bought her masda protoge and since then i can see difference in the two .My grandam has had a head gasket job ($1000),stuck shifter ($70),several electronic sensors averaging $600 dollars excluding labour charges, failed ABS system($400), overheating ($200),no heater (Something is wrong with the heater core)....the list is endless. My advise ..DO NOT GET A USED GRANDAM..andif you have a trouble free one get rid of it before 100K besause thet is where the trouble begins

I really enjoyed this car when I bought it used in '98. It is nice looking and comfortable. It drove very nicely with the V6 engine. But within the past several years, I have replaced window motors, door locks, alternator, intake gasket, timing belt, fuel injectors, and several other small things. I just had the transmission repaired! This car is a money pit!
