Bought my Maxima new 4 years ago. I'm pretty tall and this was one of only a few cars with moon roof where I sat comfortably. Found out the alignment was bad after 25,000 miles. Replaced the Goodyear Eagle tires with Michelin's and significantly reduced road noise. No other real maintenance issues other than warranty repair on a bad air bag sensor.

While the initial experience with the dealership has never been forgotten, the car has been very good to me. Good acceleration, and fun to drive. 52,000 miles and have changed tyres and oil... and nothing else (no brake pads, belts, O2 sensors, coils etc). The car does get a workout though. Owning a Nissan I keep up with www.Nissan.com, and this website tells you a lot about the company. I have not been tempted to buy a new model; my 1999 model will last me a long time I believe.

What happened to Nissan and Quality

This is my second 4th Gen Nissan Maxima. Fun to drive in a 5 speed, a true wolf in sheep's clothing. I sold my 95 for a fully loaded 99. Since November 06, I've replaced the ignition coils ($600), alternator ($200), brake calipers ($200), a new clutch ($800), starter ($250) and NOW, gearbox/tranny work (proven factory defect) ($1000) - all in the last 6 months. The coils, tranny, and starter should at least last 10 years or the life of the vehicle. Similiar so should the alternator. This vehicle is NOT reasonably durable.

I've been driving this car for 30k miles per year for 5years and I have only done the brakes twice and have replaced the clutch at 80k. It's really and ideal car for the type of driving that I do, and it still looks good when it's cleaned up. I'll sell this to my niece next fall and she willquite likely get another 50k out of it before any major maintanence is required.

I bought this because I got a good deal on it. It has been a great car overall. I have had only a few problems that seem to be common for this car. I had the Oxygen sensor go out at 40,000 mi., tires prematurely needing replaced at 25,000 mi., and my cd player is dead. Not bad compared to most cars. I just got spoiled with my Toyota that I had previously.
